《The Infection (RWBY x Abused Male Reader)》10. The Discovery

"Have you guys noticed some people acting... weird" Questioned Y/n as he looked around and saw several students with blank unassuming eyes going about their daily tasks as if they were puppets with their strings being pulled. It just seemed... unnatural.
"Yeah, I thought I was going crazy, people just seem so strange recently." Yang looked around and noticed a student walking around in circles. Definitely weird.
*chh* could team RWBY and WOLF report to the headmaster's office immediately *chh*
"Have anyone seen Weiss recently?" Ruby asked with a hint of concern in her voice.
"Not since her late-night training session with Winter." Y/n replied, he too sounding slightly concerned.
"I suppose we'll have to go Ozpins without her then."
The team of three humans and a Faunus walked to Ozpins office and knocked on the door.
"Enter."
The team entered to see Ozpin with three cups of coffee on his desk and hollow, sunken eyes with black markings beneath them. This man was tired.
"It has come to my attention that something at Beacon has gone amiss, what it is I am unable to say, but I'm sure you have noticed some... peculiarities."
"Like how some students are acting strangely and are doing things at odd hours in the night?" Said Blake, her heightened Faunus senses had smelled something unfamiliar in the air around Beacon, something sinister.
"Precisely miss Belladonna. I have summoned you here today as I believe none of you have been affected by the strange phenomena."
"Thank you, sir, but what about Weiss?"
"I believe she has been endangered by her sister. I sent Glynda to investigate the oddities but when she returned she acted differently, I fear she was inflicted with the... infection."
The group couldn't imagine their friend being changed by the virus, much less they're feared teacher.
"I assume you have a proposition Ozpin?" Y/n said, eager to find the solution to the problem.
"Of course, I believe more can be discovered about the infection, travel to the emerald forest and retrieve an ancient text that is said to contain the details of every disease on this planet."

"At once, Sir."
"Considering the situation I believe it would be fruitful to place you all in team WOLF with Y/n as the leader."
Y/n was momentarily startled by Ozpins suggestion. He hadn't expected to actually lead anyone in his team. It was a great burden to be responsible for the wellbeing of his teammates. Y/n was unsure if he was up to the task.
Ozpin sensed his hesitancy.
"I can assure you I wouldn't have made this decision if I was unsure of your skill, Y/n."
This seemed to reassure Y/n who nodded at his newly formed team. He was ready.
"We shall leave immediately Sir."
"Godspeed."
"Hey Weiss, how are you?" Asked Coco as the heiress walked into team CFVY's dorm. The only occupants being Coco and Fox.
"Fine, thanks."
"Cool... did you need anything?"
"Yes, actually."
Weiss pulled out a metal box from a bag she was carrying.
"I need help opening this, I figured Yatsuhashi would be here but..."
"You don't need a man when you have me."
"Hey!" Yelled fox who was sitting on his bed.
"Yeah yeah, you can help."
Weiss put the box on the floor.
Coco cracked her knuckles.
The fashionable student examined the box and saw a keyhole on its side.
"Hey fox, can't you lockpick?"
"Yup."
The other student grabbed his tools and crouched by the box. He inserted two complex looking silver bits into the keyhole and began rummaging around.
"This is an easy one," Fox said as he heard the lock click open.
"I wonder what's inside?" Said Coco as the box opened up.
The two students peeked their heads inside.
"What the hel-" Said Coco as she and Fox dropped to the floor unconscious.
"That gas was really a knockout," Weiss said to herself before mentally cringing. Puns were Yangs thing.
She crouched by the fallen pair and placed worms on the ground. She swiftly left before she could see the results, there were dozens of dorms in Beacon, after all.
"Is the drop point clear?"
"Affirmative."
"Then go go go!" Y/n said to his team as they hopped off the airship and looked for hostiles in the immediate vicinity.

"Clear."
"Good, our objective is north through the forest. Start walking."
The team nodded and started walking into the forest in single file, this was a very dangerous area so the militaristic levels of caution were warranted.
The team slowly edged their way through the jungle, finding Grimm every few minutes that they had to fight off.
By the time they reached the location Ozpin had told them about they were exhausted. The constant fighting had drained them of energy, but they had finally made it.
They were at an entrance to a cave. The team walked inside and saw the walls lined with torches, the walls soon became less cavelike and more manmade. After 10 minutes of walking the cave had had slowly transformed into a long hallway, at the end of which lied an open book on a raised pedestal. Y/n cautioned the others to stay back in case of traps and he walked toward the book with caution, every step slow and methodical.
Y/n eventually turned the book to see the front cover.
Ebers Papyrus by Hippocrates
Strange name for a book thought Y/n.
He looked through the first page and saw the section of the book he was looking for, he scrolled to the section and read as quickly as his eyes would allow.
He found the description of what disease he thought his classmates were infected with.
I have not found anything else like this in my travels, I have yet to give it a proper name considering the sheer abnormality of the disease. I believe it is spread through small Grimm worms entering the body and infecting the mind, the worms are very rare and display no notable distinction from their non-Grimm counterpart excluding from the skin colour. Those infected by the worm display abnormal activities and so are easy to spot if you know what you are looking for. After a brief period, the infected will be unable to interact in a socially acceptable level. By this point, they will wander to the nearest Grimm horde and become one of them. I fear if the worms became more numerous then a widespread infection would be inevitable, One can only shudder to imagine such a thing.
Y/n looked through the rest of the page until he found what he was looking for, the cure.
While difficult, the infected are able to be cured. It requires a skilled chemist and rare chemicals only found in the laboratories of Atlas and Beacon academy. Only the best for Ozpin. The mixture is created as follows...
If the book was centuries-old then how did it mention Ozpin? Y/n shook his head, there were more important things to worry about.
Y/n quickly scanned the page and memorised the antidote, he tried lifting the book up but it was connected to a wire. Shit. A large stone boulder crashed down from the ceiling, pulverising the book and almost Y/n if his reflexes had been slower.
"Run!" He yelled at his comrades further down the hallway as the boulder started rolling thunderously, nipping at his heels.
the team made a mad sprint to the exit as the stone boulder was following them.
The three girls ran out and turned around to see Y/n struggling to outrun the boulder, he wasn't going to make it. Ruby used her semblance and sped back in, grabbed Y/n, and sped back out just as the boulder hit the entrance of the cave, to large to breakthrough.
"Ruby, you could have died."
"Keyword being "could have".
"Thanks."
The girls walked back to the airship, panting and talking about how crazy that had been, Y/n stayed back for a few seconds, a strange feeling in his chest. He realised it was a new emotion, the one that all the songs were about and the one people said was the best thing ever.
Love.
Y/n ran to catch up with the team, he saw Ruby look back and smile at him, for the first time he could remember he smiled, a genuine smile of happiness. That was a first.
The team walked back to the airship relatively quickly, they had already cleared all the Grimm on the way to the cave.
They hopped in the airship and headed to Beacon.
"Man, we would be dead if we had acted any bolder, that situation really didn't rock."
"Yang."
"Yeah, Y/n?"
"Shut up."

But when they encounter the mysterious Shiakar Paradigm Society, a clash of paradigms ensues. Although both groups are aiming to make humanity stand stronger, their ideals and methods could not be further apart. Between the trio's optimistic yet naive ideals, and the SPS's tried-and-true surgical methods, determining the answer which methods can better humanity is a struggle that both parties must resolve in their own ways... Welcome to the 7th revision of my 10+ years ongoing novel trilogy. This revision took out some flawed plot concepts to re-introduce a more down-to-earth, film noir-like ambience, where a battle of wits is what will determine the outcome. It also added instead more in-depth expansion into the lives and mindsets of the characters, especially the heroes (a missing factor in older versions). Third-view limited storytelling was also introduced more prominently over my favoured third-view omnipotent, with each chapters concentrating as much as possible on a single character's point of view instead of head-hopping. So I shall begin uploading the chapters as I finish them; they're edited as much as I can, but there'll most likely be some typos and mistakes. As always, I welcome your comments and critiques, and I hope you enjoy reading that story as much as I did creating it! A parting poem to introduce the story (translated from its original French version): Credit: Les Mots, Mylene Farmer & Seal Firmly, the sky writhes When a mouth begets a death There, I will give my life to hear you To tell you the most tender words When all becomes all alone I'll break my life for a song And to lives that stoop to notice mine I know I will say goodbye But a fraction of this life I would give anything, anytime The universe has its mysteries Words are our lives You could kill a life with words Soul, how would it feel? If our lives are so fragile Words are mysteries Words of feelings Words of love, a temple If one swept the world away One could touch the universe I will tell you how the sun rose high We could with a word become one And for all those words that hurts us There are those that touches us Which illuminates, touches the infinity Even if nothingness exists For a fraction on this life We will give anything, anytime The universe has its mysteries Words are our lives We could kill a life with words Soul, how would it feel? If our lives are so fragile Words are mysteries Words of feelings Words of love, a temple
