《Evolve》19 - Give Her Idea Bag

"Okay," Zoey drags out, as she finishes the backpack design Chase asked for. "What do you think?" she turns the bag to us and we can see the various medals and patches on it, along with a giant snake.

"Awesome!" Chase says, while everyone else admires her talents. "You sure this is my same backpack?"

"Of course," she shrugs.

He laughs, "oh yeah, there's the bullet hole." We all look at him in concern and shock. "Kidding."

"Zoey, these are so cool!" Vicky tells her. "When are you gonna do mine?"

"And mine?" Another girl asks, and I'm keen to talk with Zoey about charging, since this is clearly a good business model.

"Soon, I promise," she tells them.

Nicole comes next to me, "you know what, Zo? You should sell these."

I grin, "see, it's a great idea, Nicole agrees."

"That is a really good idea," Chase says, and the other girls chime in, not protesting despite wanting the bags.

"I don't know," Zoey hesitates.

Nicole says, "seriously, if these were in a store, people would totally buy 'em!" Everyone agrees, again, shouting in an attempt to convince Zoey.

"You really think so?" The blonde asks, smiling.

"I'd buy one, except, you know, I already got this one for free, so it'd be pretty silly for me to buy another one when I already, um- This is free, right?" Chase says, holding his bag.

"I'll think about it," Zoey teases, and the girls laugh.

"And, I already suggested it, before he, you know, got that one for free," I joke, gesturing to Chase's bag. "So, you should totally sell them, Zo."

She looks like she's considering it, when an older girl pushes through the crowd. "Excuse me, hi, sorry to eavesdrop. I was just putting up these flyers for the senior bake sale. Um, Zoey, right?"

"Uhuh."

"Did you really make these backpacks?" The girl asks.

The blonde smiles, "yeah!"

"How talented is she?" Nicole asks, voice higher than usual with the excitement.

"Extremely," the girl says, drily. "Hey, you mind if I take a couple pics for the school paper?"

"Go ahead," Zoey says, and I make sure I'm out of the way as she positions the bags.

"Great," the girl says, camera ready. "This is so cool, really great job."

"Hey, uh, do you want to take a pic with the backpack on me?" Chase asks, jumping in next to Zoey.

The girl looks bored by him, "yeah, not really."

Chase turns bashful, "yeah, I, I didn't want to." He walks away, and I follow. I laugh silently.

"And we thought Logan was an attention-hog!"

"Oh shush," he jokes. I turn back briefly to see if the girl is done taking pictures and worry that the backpacks being in the paper could cause Zoey trouble. I brush it off, and follow Chase to his room, so I can hangout with Logan.

A few days later, I'm walking from class with Logan, and talking about how boring I think my backpack is now that I've seen Nicole and Chase's. We come across a hoard of people and a stall selling something.

"Backpacks by Stacy," Logan says, reading off the stall.

"Wait, huh?" I get a closer look and see that the person behind the stall is the same girl who had taken pictures of Zoey's bags. "She said she was from the school paper!" I tell him, "she totally just stole Zoey's idea!"

"So, are we still watching Sleepless in Seattle?" Logan asks, beginning to walk again. I pull him back.

"No! We have to tell Zoey and stop this," I begin getting my phone out of my bag, and start typing a frantic message.

"You mean that Zoey?" I look where he's pointing and see that Zoey and Nicole are nearer to the booth, now that some of the crowd has left. I pull him with me as I force our way through the dispersing teens. "Hey!"

"Zoey, Nicole! Do you know what's happening," I ask, and the girls shake their heads.

Suddenly, Michael and Chase show up, and we shuffle out of the way, to let them enter our huddle. The former speaks first, "hey, Zoey."

"What's going on?" Chase asks. "What?"

"That!" Nicole says, sharply, while gesturing to the stall.

"Hey, I though you said you didn't want to sell your backpacks," Chase says, and I groan.

"I did," Zoey tells him. "I mean, I didn't. I mean, I did say that I didn't want to sell 'em."

"Wait, so, those aren't your backpacks?" Michael asks.

"No," I say, "they're Stacy's backpacks. You know, backpacks by Stacy."

"Yeah, Michael," Logan laughs, and I roll my eyes at him. "Hey, I'm backing you up," he tells me.

"Thanks," I say, flatly, but smile at him anyway.

"That mean chick Stacy stole Zoey's idea!" Nicole tells the boys, and I glare at the older girl, who's earning so much money that it isn't fair.

"Oh, hey, remember! They'll be more backpacks by Stacy in next week!" We see that everyone is leaving the stall, and I try to squash my envy. "Tell your friends!"

We go over to her, the confrontation about to happen. Zoey leads it, since the backpacks were her idea, "um, hi?" Stacy looks up at us.

"Hi, is there a problem?" She asks, playing dumb.

Nicole snaps, "yeah there's a problem! You stole Zoey's backpack idea!"

"I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Yeah you do," Zoey scoffs.

I clench my fists, "you have pictures of her bags on your camera!"

"Would you like to buy one of my backpacks?" She asks, brushing us all off, and I glare at her.

"Dude, we know that these were Zoey's idea!" Chase tells her.

She smiles falsely, "I'm sorry, we're closed. Come back another day."

"You're not closed," Nicole points out.

"Yeah, you're just a table!" Michael says, "you can't close a table!" Stacy flips the sign over. It now reads 'closed'. "She closed the table." Logan pats Michael.

"Let's get outta here," Zoey says, and we follow her away from the manipulative teen.

"Thank you, come again," Stacy calls after us, and I almost run back over, but Logan forces me away.

Logan and I end up watching our film, as planned, and I decide to put the Stacy thing out of my mind, since it doesn't really matter anyway. That is, I put it out of my mind until I receive a text from Zoey the next morning.

Meeting her outside the school shop, I see that she's selling a whole new style of backpacks. "Hey, Harper, try this!" The blonde offers me a backpack, and I try it on, pressing a little button which turns it on. I begin to get a massage from it.

"Woah, Zoey!" She grins, selling the backpacks to the first few customers on their way over. I put my bag back into the mix and help out, selling as many as I can while Nicole fills me in on the plan to interrupt the meeting Stacy has with the store manager.

"Excuse me, what's going on here?" I turn to see the manager in question, a sign that the plan is working.

"Oh, I'm just selling my backpacks," Zoey tells him, and I smile, handing off an orange backpack, and putting the cash away.

"Backpacks by Zoey," Nicole adds, popping in, her own bag in hand.

Chase wanders over, "hey, uh, Zoey, this feels awesome!" I grin, knowing how good the massage tools are.

"What does he mean, feels awesome?" The store guy asks, and Nicole eagerly helps him out.

"Well, see, Zoey's backpacks have some cool new features."

Stacy is clearly panicking, "sir, we were about to make a deal!"

He holds a hand up to the older girl, "wait. What do you mean by features?"

Chase demonstrates, "oh, you see, you just turn this knob, and it massages your back." He closes his eyes and enjoys the feeling. "Oh, yeah! Oh that's nice. That is tremendous!" We laugh at him as he walks off.

"You want to try one?" Zoey offers, grabbing a backpack from the stall. Nicole helps the man put it on and turns the knob.

"Oh. Oh. This feels good!" He says, and we cheer.

"Sir, our meeting!" Stacy reminds him, desperately.

"And that's not all!" I say.

"If you really wanna relax, turn the other knob," Nicole tells him, prompting him to do so. Music begins playing from the speakers.

"Oh, my god, it's a radio too?"

"Yes, sir," Zoey tells him. "And you can plug an MP3 player into it."

"So you can listen to music without having to stick headphones in your ear," Michael says, wearing his backpack backwards.

I hear wheels on the ground, and turn to see Logan skateboarding over. "Hey, Harp, these backpacks are great for listening to music while boarding!" He stops next to me, and I smile at him to let him know he did good, before watching the man, closely.

"Great," the man says. "Fantastic idea!"

"You're right! Just look around, people love 'em!" Chase tells him, and Stacy's face falls. She knows we've won this.

"Excuse me," a customer says, "I wanna buy a backpack by Zoey!"

"But, you already have a backpack by Stacy," Stacy says, holding her own backpack out as an example.

"Yeah, it's lame," the customer says, and tosses her old backpack into a trash can, while Zoey gets her a new one, from the stall. "I love this one!"

"Orange is totally in, right now!" I tell her, since the color has been selling like crazy.

"And it vibrates and plays music?" She asks.

"That's right," Zoey says.

The girl smiles, "I want it!"

The store man looks at us," uh, you're Zoey, right?"

"That's me."

"Listen, you want to make a deal, so we can sell your backpacks at the PCA bookstore?"

"Excuse me!" Stacy says, looking angrily at him, mad that she's been replaced.

"Come on, Zoey, we have a lot to talk about," the man says, and Zoey follows him.

"Sir, wait! What about my backpacks?" I glare at Stacy, who still won't let it go.

"Oh, uh, there's one in the trash over there," Zoey tells her, and then continues walking.

"Maybe you should join it," I say, and I leave too, taking Logan to Sushi Rox for lunch.

That evening, we go to see Zoey's speech in the lounge, about the backpack stuff. "Okay, I know there's been a lot of questions about my backpack deal with the bookstore," she begins.

"No, not a lot of questions," Nicole says.

"Just one," Chase tells her, "how much you gonna make?" I laugh at his directness.

"Yeah, how much cash we talking here?" Dana asks.

"We're dying to know!" I add, eyeing the sheet next to her carefully.

Everyone begins to speculate, and she laughs at our enthusiasm. "Hey! Hey!" She whistles, and everyone stops. "Just so you know, I didn't take any money-"

"What?" I shout, before clamping a hand over my mouth. "Sorry," I mumble, through my fingers, a deep blush taking over my face.

"Okay, um, what Harper means, is that, that's a bad deal," Chase tells her.

"No! Instead of the money I asked for something cool, something we could all use. You ready?"

We all chatter again, as I watch the sheet, knowing now that something cool is under it. She pulls it away, revealing a super cool jukebox, which appears to be functional.

"Okay, you really had me worried but I was wrong! This is amazing!" I tell her, admiring the lights.

"Look at that thing," Dana says.

"I know," Zoey says, clearly glad we like it, and excited to be sharing it.

"Well, quit yapping and juke it up!" Chase tells her, and she loads up a song.

"Isn't it cool?" She says, as the music begins.

"Nice," Chase agrees.

"It's beautiful," I say, beginning to sway to the song.

"Beyond cool," Nicole says. Chase goes over to Zoey, while the brunette and I dance. When I look over, the tall boy and blonde are gone, and Michael has taken their place. I shrug it off, and begin dancing harder.

I throw my arms in the air, "so cool!"
