《Evolve》18 - Bag to the Start

"Okay, you're having a slumber party, and your best friend dares you to call the boy you have a crush on. What do you do?" Chase asks, and Michael thinks it over. I grin at their behaviour. They're reading the magazines in the store, instead of doing real shopping.

"That depends, how cute is the boy?" He jokes.

We all laugh, while Chase check the copy of Teen Girl for any indication of the boy's cuteness. Zoey comes over, holding a huge tray of Blix. She's visibly confused by the guys reading a girl magazine.

"Okay, why are you guys reading Teen Girl magazine?"

"To learn stuff," Chase tells her.

"About what?"

"Teen girls," he says, simply, while Michael gestures to the cover.

I lean in to whisper to Zoey, "they think we listen to what the magazine tells us, it's great." I raise my eyes and give the guys a thumbs up, to encourage them to keep reading. She plays along.

"Alright, skip to the next one," Michael tells Chase.

"Okay, okay. Um, ooh, here we are. Your best friend borrows your lip gloss without asking." Michael gasps at this. "Yeah, yeah, okay. Do you, A, get a new best friend, B, push her down a flight of stairs, or C-"

"What, it doesn't say that!" Zoey interrupts, and I lean around to look at the magazine myself. I glare up at Chase when I see the real answer is different.

"I know, sorry, but I feel it should definitely be an option." We look to Michael, who has his answer.

"Well, I say B. Down the stairs she goes." The guys laugh, and I feel myself wanting to join them.

"I suppose it would be deserved if it was my favourite lip gloss," I say, thinking of my orange flavoured lip gloss, fondly.

"You guys are sick," Zoey tells them.

"Yeah." Chase admits.

"We pretty much are."

"Hey, Zo, they don't have grapes. You want some raisins?" I hear Nicole ask. At first I'm confused, but realise it's actually pretty logical to offer raisins in place of grapes. Even though they taste so different.

Zoey cringes, "no, I hate raisins."

Michael looks like he takes personal offense to this, "why do you hate raisins?"

"Let a girl hate raisins," I say, "does the magazine not tell you that?" Chase gently hits me with the magazine, while I playfully fight him off.

"They're just all wrinkly," Zoey tells him. "I feel like I'm eating little, bitty old people." I freeze and turn to her. Her reasoning is strange.

"What a unique reason," I say, grinning.

"And, we're sick?" Chase asks.

"Hey, Zoey, come over here. You gotta taste this." She goes over to Nicole, and I wander off into the store.

I find a PCA notebook that would be super useful for my classes, since my notes are filling up my other one. I pick two up, and a new eraser that's shaped like a stingray, because it's cute. I head over to the counter and find the man rubbing a backpack, while Zoey and Nicole watch on. I look to the boys for help.

"Nicole wrecked the bag," Michael whispers, and I grimace. Those bags aren't cheap.

We wait a while, and Nicole asks, "well?" The man looks up from trying to wash off the pink staining on the bag.

"I'm sorry, it won't come out. I'm afraid you're gonna have to buy the backpack."

"Aw, man," Nicole whines.

Zoey sighs, "how much is it?"

The man looks at the price, "with tax, fifty dollars."

"I don't have fifty bucks!" Nicole tells him, and I look through my purse to see how much money I'll have left after buying my things.

"Well, maybe you can borrow it from a friend."

Nicole and Zoey both turn to look at the boys, while I quickly buy my notebooks and eraser. They go into my backpack, and pencil case, immediately. I count the leftover change.

"Woah, ho, look at the time!" Chase says, glancing at his watch.

Michael coughs, "we're late!" The spring away, and I shake my head, amused.

"I have five dollars," I tell Nicole, who takes it.

"Thanks, Harper." She looks in her purse, "I have thirty?" The man waits for the rest. She pouts at Zoey, who caves and looks into her own funds.

"I have fifteen." She hands it over to Nicole, who pools all the money together and passes it to the man.

"Not anymore. Thanks Zoey, I really feel bad."

"Here," the blonde says, "then have another Goo Pop." She hands it to Nicole, and I realise that it must be what had caused the mess.

"Thanks, I don't know why that other one squirted out like that. All I did was squeeze a little, like this." The goo squirts out, as it must have before, this time hitting Zoey, square on her face. I laugh, taking my things and leaving the store.

In the lounge, the girls are trying to get the stereo to work, but it's just giving off static, and I'm getting tired of covering my ears to block out the awful sound. Nicole is on the sofa, angrily rubbing at the stain on her new backpack, while Zoey is on her laptop. I grab a textbook and begin reading.

"Stupid backpack," I hear the brunette mutter. "Stupid Goo Pop stain."

"You know, you could still use the backpack," Zoey tells her.

Nicole shakes her head, "no I can't, it's all..."

"Stupid?"

"Yeah."

"It isn't stupid," I say, trying to make her feel better and not thrilled that my money may have been wasted, even if it wasn't much.

"Yeah, it is," she says, then sighs. She seems to grow aggravated, the backpack causing more anger than is really deserves. "Would you guys just pick a station already? That static is driving me insane!"

"We couldn't tell," I mumble.

"I'm trying," Dana tells her, scowling. "Chase, can you fix our stereo?"

"Ah, uh, let me take a look," he says, going over to it. I'm not sure how qualified he is, but who cares if he can get it working. I toss my textbook down and join them, not being able to focus. "Man, how old is this thing? It's, like, prehistoric."

"Yeah, it looks like it's from the '80s," Michael laughs, and I take the CD he's looking at from him.

Dana smiles falsely, "thanks." The boys leave, and the static continues.

"How much can a knew radio cost?" I ask, "surely the school would replace it if we asked?"

"As if," Dana says. We leave, and I groan, going to my room and laying on my bed for most of the evening.

When Jen comes back, we decide to play a movie on her laptop, with Lil coming in just as we settle on Legally Blonde. We all gather on the bunks, with some snacks and a bottle of Blix each. At one point, Quinn bursts in to tell us about her pink fruit, on the tree she's been growing outside. Something to do with bananas and apples. We shake her off and finish up the film, before going to bed.

The next morning, we go to class, and I see Zoey has fixed up Nicole's backpack. It's cute, and you can't see the stain anymore. Nicole seems happy, more importantly. We walk out of class together, with Chase complaining about it, since he doesn't get it.

"Okay, geometry is impossible. I mean, what is a trapezoid?" He asks us.

Zoey turns to him, "it's a quadrilateral with two parallel sides."

His confusion is visible, "but I-I thought that was a rhombus!"

"No, weren't you listening in class?" Dana asks.

Nicole joins in, "a rhombus is an equilateral parallelogram."

"Okay, but what is a parallelogram?" He shouts.

I laugh, "open a book, dude."

He looks helplessly to Zoey. "I'm not telling you again. Look in your textbook."

He groans, and I whisper into his ear, "ha."

Vicky comes over, seeing Nicole's bag, "hey, Nicole, where'd you get the backpack?"

"Oh, Zoey made it," she tells her, pointing to the blonde, who smiles.

"Really?"

Zoey confirms it, happily, "yeah!"

"I want one!" Vicky tells her, and I feel a plan forming in my mind.

"You know, these are pretty cool," Chase says. "You should, like, make a guys version."

"Maybe sell them," I suggest, thinking of how much money you could make back on a bag like that.

"Okay, gimme," she tells Chase; and he hands her his bag. "I won't charge you," she adds, looking at me. She looks at his bag, which is still full. "Don't you wanna get your books out so you can study later?"

"Oh, gross!"

I laugh, "Chase, you still don't know what a parallelogram is."

"I'll live, thanks," he tells me, smirking.

"Okay, I'll call you when it's ready," Zoey says, also amused.

"Cool." The girls leave. "Oh, wait, what's a parallelogram?" He shouts after them. I nudge him, but a random kid answers.

"It's a four sided plane figure, with opposite parallel sides! Doi!" He walks off without another word and I crack up, unable to stop laughing at a random kid schooling Chase.

"Yeah? Well, I'm taller than you!" He shouts after the kid, and I laugh harder.

"Come on, Jim, we gotta get you a textbook."
