《Evolve》5 - Secrets of the Game

We're all chilling in the girls' lounge, playing a game that we made up, mostly because we got bored while waiting for our sushi order. "Okay, Zoey, you're up," Dana tells her, passing the dice over.

"Here we go," she says, shaking them before tossing them onto the table. We all peer at them. "And?"

They've both landed on the number three, meaning that she got a, "six," Nicole tells everyone, "even."

"Lucky," I say, as confessing is much better than being told to do something, in my opinion, at least.

"Confess," Vicky says.

"Okay," Zoey begins thinking, "all right. One time, when I was ten, I burped in church." We laugh and I cringe at her confession.

"Okay, if that happened to me, I'd die," Nicole says to her, and I agree.

I look up from our game and see our friend walking in. "Oh, hey Quinn," I greet her, as she gets closer to us.

"You wanna play Confess or Stress with us?" Nicole asks.

She smiles, "how do you play?"

"Okay, you roll the dice," Zoey begins.

"Yeah?"

"And if you get an even number, you have to confess something really embarrassing," Dana tells her.

"Like Zoey just did," I add. "But-"

"If you roll and odd number, you have to do something stressful," Nicole finishes.

Quinn doesn't seem to understand it, "like eat a poisonous bug?"

"Stressful, not lethal," Zoey says.

"More like, text your crush or curse in front of a teacher," I explain.

"Oh, and the most important rule," Nicole says, "nothing that anyone says, or does, leaves this room."

"Gotta swear!" Zoey says.

"Swear!" Quinn says before joining the game.

"Oh, my turn," Nicole says. She takes the dice and is about to roll.

"Wait," Quinn says, "I'm starved. Can we order some sushi?"

"Already on the way," Zoey says, happily.

"Do you think they'd refund us if I turn into a skeleton before it arrives?" I ask, rubbing my empty stomach. They laugh me off as Nicole cradles the dice, eager to play.

"How cool is it that we have our own sushi bar right on campus?" She asks.

"The coolest," Zoey agrees.

"Except that the delivery guy is Logan," Dana says, and I shrug.

"Ew, Logan? He's such a jerk," Quinn says and I begin to feel a little uncomfortable.

"A very cute jerk," Nicole says.

"A jerk who's my friend," I remind them, and Dana laughs.

"And speak of the jerk," she says, as Logan enters the room in his Sushi Rox uniform.

"Sup ladies?" He greets us. "Harper," he adds, and I roll my eyes.

"Hey," I say, quietly.

"We were just talking about you," Zoey says, as I sink lower into my seat. Like with the play, having my friends secretly talk about each other and me getting caught in the middle, not the best feeling in the world.

"Yeah, I can't blame ya," he says, thinking it's all positive.

"Where's our sushi?" Dana demands, and he remembers his job.

"Oh, one sec." He turns around and shouts, "come on! Let's go, let's go, let's go!" We watch as Chase comes in, holding a large box and also wearing the uniform.

"You know, you could help me," he tells Logan, and I stand up to help him.

"Yeah, no thanks."

"Logan, this is your job why is Chase doing it all?" He scoffs and I glares at him.

"Relax," he says.

"You're working with Logan now?" Zoey asks Chase, who has a better grip on the box, now.

"Well I'm working, he seems to be watching!"

Logan pushes me away, as I go to swat him. "I'm training you so you can learn to make deliveries on your own," he looks over at me, "like a good friend." I'm sure this is a reference to our new agreement, where he helps me with chemistry and I help him with, well, everything else. I had said that a good friend wouldn't just do his homework, but help him learn. I regret saying it now, obviously.

"Good," Zoey says. "Now that we know you're not delivering anymore, we'll order more often." We laugh, and I take back my seat.

"Alright, alright," Logan says. "I know there's been a little tension between me and you girls since you guys came to PCA."

"Ya think?" Zoey says.

"No? Really?" I ask, and he sends me an annoyed glare.

"Harper," he groans. "Yes, and I feel bad about that. Which is why I wanna give you something." He walks out and returns with a large teddy bear which is wearing a PCA shirt and some blue shorts.

"Uh, Logan?" I ask, confused that he never mentioned this peace offering to me.

"Just a present from me to you girls, for your lounge here."

"You're giving us a present?" Dana asks, shocked.

"Yeah. That so weird?"

"Weird... Suspicious..." I say, and he glares at me again. I hold my hands up to show I won't do it again.

"Kinda," Zoey says, "Chase, was this your idea?"

"Nope, I had nothing to do with it, it was all him." I bite my lip to repress the 'suspicious' growing on my tongue.

"Wow, this is really nice of you, Logan," Nicole tells him.

He shrugs, "hey, we're all at the same boarding school, I figure we might as well be nice to each other." He sits the bear down on a stool at an empty table. "Perfect."

"Yeah," I say. "Perfect."

"Well," Chase says, breaking the staring match I was having with my totally not suspicious friend. "We gotta jam." They both start to leave, but we're still missing our food.

"Uh, Chase," Zoey says, and he turns back around. "Can we have our sushi?"

"Oh, right," he says. "I'm always forgetting that part."

"Maybe Logan does need to teach you," I joke, and he smiles.

"Your sushi," he says, putting it down.

"Your money," Nicole mimics, handing over the money we had pooled together. He takes it in his mouth and Logan snatches it when he stands up. They leave and our game resumes, this time, with sushi.

"Eight, Nicole. Confess," Zoey says.

"Come on, you got to do it," we tell her and she seems to figure out what to say.

"Okay, you know I have study hall with almost all guys, right?"

"Well, there's more guys at PCA," I say, "so, yeah?"

"Right," the others say.

"Well, I kinda made a chart of which guys have the cutest lips," she says, laughing. We all react differently to this.

"How would you even make a chart like that?" I ask, not sure what counts as a cute pair of lips. I mean surely it depends on the whole face?

"You rated boys' lips?" Quinn asks, "on what criteria?"

"Shape, colour, kissability," she says, casually. This time we all just laugh.

"Okay, okay, Zoey's turn, again," she says.

"Dice me." I pass her the dice and she rolls.

"Odds," Dana tells us.

"Now how should we stress Zoey?" Quinn asks, and I smirk.

"What about a classic prank call?"

"To Mr Callahan!" Nicole adds, and we high five. The other girls all agree that it's a good idea. But Zoey doesn't want to.

"I am not prank calling our English teacher!"

"You rolled odds," Dana reminds her.

"So you have to do it," I say.

"You gotta face the stress," Quinn tells her.

"I don't have his phone number," she excuses, and I laugh.

"I do." They all look at me oddly. "It's in the directory," I explain. I write it down, quickly, and pass her the paper so she can read it off. She pulls the phone over and begins dialling.

"Hello?"

"Yes," Zoey says, using a southern accented voice which is hilarious in itself. "I'm callin' about the mustard you ordered?" We all hold back our laughter, hoping not to get caught.

"Mustard? I didn't order any mustard."

"Uh, yes, sir, you ordered 9,000 jars of mustard," she says, and I cover my mouth as a grin breaks out on my face.

"What? Who could eat that much mustard?"

"That's none of my business!" She says. "So, what time would you like me to drop off the mustard?"

"I-I don't even like mustard!" He shouts, clearly stressing about the mustard. I almost feel bad, he didn't roll odds, but it's too funny to really care.

"Then why'd you order so much?"

"I didn't!" We all laugh, and Zoey finds a way to quickly end the call, saying she'll ask her supervisor for some help, and get back to him. I stop holding back when the phone is put down, and laugh loudly.

The next day, we sit with Chase, doing our school work. "So how was work last night?" Zoey asks him, while I stop myself from cracking up; I'm doing English homework.

"Brutal. Bru-tal!"

"Delivering sushi's brutal?" She asks.

"With Logan?" I say, "I bet it is."

"Actually, Logan went home sick! I had to make thirty-two deliveries by myself!"

"He went home sick?" I ask. "He didn't seem sick, to me?" Logan had been texting me late into last night, not necessarily how he usually would, but not seeming sick, either. In fact, I had to tell him to go to sleep when I got too tired to keep chatting.

"Yeah, well he wasn't there, do you know how big this campus is? I bet you I had to walk ten miles! And let me tell ya, some of the kids here at PCA? Not normal."

"What do you mean?" Zoey asks.

"How not normal are we talking?" I add. He explains how one kid had ordered sushi to his room, and had answered the door in a party hat and holding a live goat.

"A goat?" Zoey asks, as confused as we all are.

"But no pets are allowed at PCA," I say, jokingly, and Chase huffs.

"Ha ha," he says. "A goat that likes spicy tuna," he tells us, and we have nothing to say to that.

I hear a familiar laugh and see Logan, Michael, and a boy I don't know approaching the table.

"What's goin' on, guys?" He asks.

"Um, not much?" I tell him, wondering why they're laughing.

"Just doing some homework," Nicole says, and they snort.

"What's so funny?" Zoey asks.

"Yeah," I say, through gritted teeth. "What's so funny, Logan?"

"Oh, nothing. Nothing," the stranger says.

"Yeah, uh, we were just wondering," Michael says. "Which one of us do you think has the cutest lips?" This can't be anything but a reference to Nicole's confession from last night, which is really weird.

We all share a look, with Chase not sure what's going on. "Um, why do you ask that?" Nicole asks, clearly panicking.

"Just wondering," Logan repeats, and I frown.

"Yeah, we gotta go," Michael says.

They begin walking away, but Logan comes back. "Oh, Zoey," he says, "I need to call Mr Callahan, at home. Would you happen to have his phone number?" I balk at him and feel a little like screaming. He runs off, luckily before I can kill him.

Chase still doesn't know what's happening. "Okay, what was that all about?"

"I don't know," Nicole says, slamming her pen down.

"But we're gonna find out," Zoey says.

"Right now," I add, shoving my things into my backpack and standing up. They follow me and we all go to the lounge, where we find Dana.

"Did you tell?" Zoey asks her.

"Did you?" Nicole and I push, while Dana just fixes her skateboard, confused.

"Tell who what?"

"The guys," Zoey explains, "about her cute lip chart?" Nicole shushes her. "And about me prank calling Mr Callahan!"

"No," she denies.

"Well, someone told," Nicole says.

"Cause Michael and Logan know!"

"They totally just made fun of us," I say.

Dana seems offended, "well, I kept my mouth shut!" Quinn comes over to us, also seeming upset, and I get anxious.

"Okay, who blabbed?"

"Blabbed what?" Zoey asks.

"You know," she says, "that I still like to eat baby food." She's holding a pot in her hand, and I hide my disgust. How can she enjoy mush?

"It wasn't us," Zoey tells her.

"But we're going to figure out who did," I say, sitting in the chair.

"Well people know about it, and it's really upsetting," she cries, tossing the lid away and beginning to eat the baby food. "Puréed peas?" She offers, and I hold my hand up to stop the spoon. She shrugs and eats it herself.

We decide to watch TV, to help us feel better about the whole situation. I'm sat in my chair, while the girls take the couch. We put on Drake and Josh, a classic which we get into easily.

"This is the funniest show ever," Zoey says and I nod, taking a drink from my Blix.

"Nicole, you left these in the dryer," Vicky says, coming over and holding up a pair of bunny underwear. I look away, to help Nicole feel less embarrassed.

"Um, those aren't mine," she denies.

"I'm pretty sure you're the only girl here who wears Hello Bunny underwear," she insists.

The others laugh, and Nicole snatches the underwear, hiding it behind her. "They we're on sale," she defends, angrily, and Vicky walks away. "It's not funny!" She tells our friends, who laugh at her.

"Right, sorry."

"Shame on you guys," I say, grinning, and Zoey laughs again.

"And Dana shouldn't be leaving her skateboard here," Nicole tells us, "people put food on this table." She puts the skateboard down on the floor, and leans back in her seat, clearly too embarrassed to have fun, right now.

"Hey, Zoey," Quinn asks, "what's up with your toenail?" I look at the blonde's toe, and raise my eyebrows in surprise.

"Oh, when I was seven, I dropped a bowling ball on it."

"Looks like a corn chip," Quinn says. She sees Zoey's face, "I like corn chips?"

"I have a scar on my foot from when I broke our fish tank and stepped on the glass," I tell them. They stare at me.

"How'd you break a fish tank?" Nicole asks.

I shrug, embarrassed now, too. "I was trying to do the cha cha slide, and I slid a little too far to the left," I explain, and they laugh.

"Hey, have any of you guys seen my skateboard? I thought I left it on the-" Dana asks, returning. I'm about to point to it when she finds it herself and goes flying into the guacamole on the table. We gasp at her as everyone in the room watches."Okay," she says, scarily calm. "Who left the skateboard there?"

Zoey turns to Nicole, "if I were you, I'd run." Nicole runs off screaming, while Dana chases her. I pick up the skateboard and lean it against the chair, hoping to avoid another accident.

"That could've gone better," I say.

And I realise how right I am when people are laughing at Dana, the next morning. "What are they laughing about?" She asks.

"I don't know," Zoey says. "You gonna eat those grapes?"

"I was," Nicole says. "Why? You want 'em?"

"No," Zoey says, but keeps staring at them. Nicole sighs and passes them over, and the blonde cheers.

"Hey, Nicole," the boy from yesterday says.

"Oh, hi Brad," she says, then whispers to us, "he's on my cute lip chart." She turns her attention back to him, "what's up?"

"Oh, I was just wondering, do you like these bunnies on my underwear?" He walks off as people laugh, and I groan.

"I think maybe I know what they're laughing at," I tell them. "Dana, you've become the next victim," I say, patting her shoulder.

"Hey, Dana, you're pretty coordinated, right?" Another guy asks her. "Um, tell me, is this the right way to ride a skateboard?" He steps on it and flails around. "Woah!"

Dana gets up and grabs him by his shirt. "Okay, I wanna know who told you, and I wanna know now!"

"What do you mean?" He asks.

"Don't play dumb!" I shout.

"She asked you a question," Zoey says, and we stand up.

"Hey, hey, easy there corn-chip toe, fish tank foot." Dana pushes him away and he runs off.

"All right, that's it, all girls in the dorm lounge, now!"
