《Evolve》4 - The Quinn Effect

When I wake up, I get dressed and head to the lounge. Zoey is there, playing foosball with Chase, so I go over to see how her night with Quinn was. She tells us everything.

"She attached wires to your head?" Chase asks, and I'm thinking the same thing. It's not exactly the behaviour you expect from a roommate, or a thirteen year old.

"Yes, and other places."

I grimace. "Well, at least she didn't fight with you," I say, although I'm not sure which would make for a better wake up call.

"Maybe you should move back in with Dana and Nicole," Chase suggests. "Bet you they miss you." Considering that I had heard the pair bickering on my way here, I think he's right.

"No, they don't want me back," Zoey laments.

I ask her, "did they actually say that?"

She turns thoughtful for a while. "No..."

"Then maybe they miss you," I say.

"No, I think I'm stuck with Quinn and her Quinventions," she says, very casually for someone saying something so strange.

"Quinventions?" Chase and I ask.

She nods, "yeah, she combined her name with the word 'invention'."

"Ah, so she's Quinsane?" Chase asks, and I can't help but laugh.

"Exactly," Zoey says.

In defence of Quinn, I say, "I think it's Quinteresting," though they just laugh. "I'm gonna go," I add, when the laughter dies down. "See you later." I leave and can just hear Zoey asking Chase to the movies as I leave the room.

I find my way to class and see my brother lurking nearby. I'm wondering if I want to talk to him when he sees me. "Shortcake, get over here," he hisses, and I walk over, calmly.

"What's up, Jake?" He glares at me. "What's up, Jake?" I ask again, quieter.

He looks around, shifty, "I'm just waiting for- him!" He pulls a string on the ground and I follow it, seeing a kid of Jake's age tripping over, what is now, a trip wire.

"Jake," I say, harshly. "Why would you do that?" He doesn't respond, just laughs and runs to the poor kid, and smashes a cream pie in his face, which I also had not noticed. I decide there's nothing I can do and go into my classroom, but can hear as a teacher finds my brother and scolds him. Good.

I meet Logan inside the classroom and am placing my things down when he asks, "what's happening out there?"

I chuckle, "my brother is happening out there." His face twists and I'm about to explain the pie and the rope.

"You have a brother?" He asks. I nod. "Oh." Our conversation ends and the teacher comes in, throwing a tissue covered in cream into the trash. I bite my lip to stop from smiling.

"Welcome class," he says. "Let's begin with page 45 of Of Mice and Men."

The rest of the day is dull, and with my friend group split I find myself spending most of my time alone, in my dorm. It's not how I imagined my time here, especially not after the first few days of friendships and fun.

"Jen, Lil," I say, pulling out my earphones. "Have you heard anything else about the 101 scandal? Do the girls miss Zoey?"

They both shrug, but then Jen remembers something. "I heard them fighting, and then Nicole mentioned that Zoey, but I can't remember what she said." We stare at her.

"You can't remember?" Lil asks. "What a tease." Jen blushes. "I haven't heard anything, sorry Harp."

I sigh but I've not lost all hope. "They'll figure it out, Zoey isn't exactly the roommate of horror they'll never want back. And Nicole loves her."

The next day, I find Zoey talking to Chase, about Quinn. "I can't wait till Friday! Quinn scares me!" Zoey says.

"What'd she do?" I ask, announcing myself, while Chase decides to plays devil's advocate.

"Oh come on, she can't be that freaky."

Zoey goes into detail about an experiment of Quinn's where she dunked a steak in some blue liquid and pulled it out in to reveal a bare bone. I feel a slight sliver of fear at the thought of living in the same building as the science girl, knowing she can do something like that so easily. I mean, aren't there laws against that?

Chase, for whatever reason, doesn't think this is weird. "So she melted some meat, it's not that weird!"

"It's completely weird!" Zoey says.

I nod, "it really is. And, weren't you totally freaked out by her a couple of days ago?" I ask, incredulously. I know we didn't want him to make fun of her but this is more than I expected from him.

"Mind your business," Chase tells me, in a hushed voice. I stare at him with a confused expression until Zoey speaks again.

"I gotta tell Quinn I'm moving out."

"No, no, no, no! Don't, dont, dont!" He objects, and I stare at him again. What the hell?

"Why not?" She asks him.

I grin, "yeah, Chase, why not?" I look at him sweetly and he struggles to answer.

"Because, Quinn doesn't have a lot of friends, and you could hurt her feelings."

Zoey grows worried, "you think?"

"Oh, yeah," he says, and I've figured out what he's doing, just like that. "You can't just look a girl in the face and say 'I don't want to live with you anymore'." She accepts this and leaves, unsure what to do and stressed.

I turn to Chase, cockily. "You're enjoying the extra attention, aren't you?" He fumbles his words and falls from the tree he was say in.

"What? No!"

"Yeah, you totally are, you don't want her to become friends with Nicole again because she's talking to you about her problems and you get to weasel your way in!" I let out a victorious 'ha' when he doesn't deny it.

"Is it obvious?" He asks, solemnly.

I tilt my head, "that you're in love with Zoey? Yes." While his draw drops, I add, "that Zoey has no idea, also yes." He groans and face plants against the tree trunk.

"Why," he groans, and I'm not sure what I'm expected to say. He sits up. "Is it really terrible that I don't want them to make up?"

I scoff, "yeah. It's selfish and stupid and it's not going to make her like you anymore than she already does." He frowns. "Which means you have the same chance even if you help her solve her problems, instead of messing them up even more." He seems to get what I'm saying, and goes to run after Zoey.

He freezes suddenly and turns back to me. "You won't tell her, will you?"

I grin, "your secret's safe with me, Jim Halpert." He sends me a horrified glance before continuing after the blonde who has his heart, while I wallow alone next to the tree.

When I see Zoey walking through the lounge, belongings tucked under her arms, I decide not to interrupt, but listen carefully for any fighting. Nothing comes and I think they've made up, until I see the other two girls walk into the lounge.

I go the rest of the evening and most of the morning without seeing Zoey. At lunch, I'm worried she ran away because she had nowhere to stay, and go over to her brother to check. He's sitting with a boy our age, who's name I think is Mark.

"Just say, 'el elefante es grande'." I watch as Mark gets frustrated, despite Dustin's patient tone, and figure the kid isn't the best tutor.

"I've already said that ten times! Can you teach me something else already?"

Dustin looks lost and then repeats, "el élégante es grande!" Which causes Mark to lose any remaining patience.

"You know what? I think that's the only Spanish you know. I'm getting me a new tutor. Adios!" He leaves the table and Dustin jumps up after him.

"¿Por que, Mark? ¿Por que?" I laugh and go over to him, as mark turns back.

Shouting, and very angry, the older boy tells Dustin, "I want my cuatro dollars back!"

I pay Dustin's head, "sorry, buddy, guess you're not cut out for Spanish."

He shrugs and sits back at his table. "Yeah, I really thought this would work," he says, sadly.

"Well, whatever else you do I'm sure will be better, maybe make sure you actually can do it first, though." He gives me a small smile. "Hey, you haven't seen-" I catch sight of who I'm looking for and laugh. "Nevermind, I'm gonna go, let me know if my brother bothers you!" He waves me off as I near his sister.

I see her hugging Nicole, and assume they've finally made up, which is great news. When Dana joins them, I watch as they begin bickering and Zoey manages to shut them up. I figure that their group is going to be fine, which means the whole group will be fine. I smile, and then watch as Zoey goes on her phone, and feel my own buzz in my pocket. I pull it out and find the message asking me to the movies, with her, Chase, Dana and Nicole. I feel bad, and connect the dots that Chase thought it was a date, but since she's already invited the others, I text back a yes.

I meet the girls outside our dorm, wearing a skirt, t shirt and pumps. I've got money for my ticket and snacks, but not enough to bankrupt me until my next allowance comes in.

"Hey, Harper!" Nicole says, and it's the first time we've spoken since they first fought.

I smile back, welcomingly, "hey Nicole, you guys ready?" We head to the movies together and see Chase stood on the steps waiting. His face drops when we arrive, and I know that Zoey hasn't told him.

"Hey!" Dana says.

"Sorry we're late," Nicole adds.

I smile shyly, "yeah, sorry," I catch his eye and hope he knows that I don't just mean for being late, but for being here at all.

"What time does the movie start?" Dana asks, and poor Chase is still so confused.

"Um, seven thirty. Weren't you guys fighting?" He asks them, and they smile.

"We made up," Nicole says, cheerfully.

"Yeah, so I invited them to the movie!" Zoey says. "That's cool, right?"

He looks devastated. "Oh yeah, sure. Very cool." The girls go in and I follow them, patting his shoulder comfortingly.

"Sorry, Jim," I say and he sighs. I look back once and see that he and Zoey are talking to her brother, who is busking, and I watch him ditch the rose he had brought, for her. "Really sorry."
