omfg these two are just the cutest best friends in the entire world.

how they became bsf's:

the united states bought alaska from the russian empire in 1867 and in 1898 the US annexed hawai'i. with a little over 30 years difference, alaska and hawai'i were in a somewhat similar situation. both were territories up until 1959 when both became the last 2 states admitted to the union.

i like to believe that during the time period of hawai'i's annexation, alaska felt bad for her and sympathized with her in a way. they had both become territories of the US unwillingly and both had native people living on their lands (y'know, before europeans ^^)

alaska was actually the one to befriend hawai'i surprisingly because of these reasons.

after that, they just kinda stuck together from then on out. since they were both so far away from the mainland and weren't states, they didn't talk much to the lower 48 and really only had each other for that time. they developed a super close bond, one that's still strong today. they love each other (platonically, i don't ship them) and would die for the other.

about their friendship:

hawai'i and alaska's friendship works out so well because they're practically polar opposites. hawai'i is a tropical volcanic island chain and is always sunny, she's super outgoing, loud and friendly, while alaska is a dry wintry tundra, he hates socializing with others, doesn't care about them either, and isn't a very welcoming person.

they balance each other out perfectly and i love a good opposites attract friendship dynamic.

their friendship today:

since i hc all the states to live within their respective borders, alaska and hawai'i don't really see each other all too much. (especially during quarantine) they pretty much facetime every night or every other night, even if it's just for a while to check up on the other ^^

alaska absolutely HATES warm weather, so he's opted to visit hawai'i strictly in the winter months. hawai'i is more tolerant to non-tropical weather, but still prefers to visit alaska in the summertime. the two go with the lower 48 on their annual cross country road trip, so they see each other multiple times a year!
