《Chasing the nerd ✓》Chapter 51| Rachel

"I should have an Oscar after that performance. I almost spilled real tears! It's a shame no one saw." I say while we are seated in Connor's living room. Connor hasn't paid any attention to me whatsoever. He is typing like crazy on his mini laptop and mumbles things to himself. "Is he alright?" I whisper to Noah who looks at him with a half smile on his face.
"I don't know what to tell you. I've been asking the same thing for years now." He teases.
"I can here you both you know. A little respect would be very much appreciated since I'm the one who did the job. But no! The hero gets mocked." Connor says dramatically, his sight glued to the screen in front of him.
"Ok, calm down Dark Knight. You hacked into a computer, you didn't save Gotham City from the Joker."
"If we are doing this, I'd choose Deadpool. I'm more a Marvel kind of guy, you know that."
"Who's that?" I whisper to Noah when I hear Connor scoff.
"What do you two talk about when you're not having sex?"
"How about more work, less talking?" Noah sends a death glare his way but he seems unaffected. He chuckles a little under his breath and starts typing again.
"Anyway, what was the bump you hit? You never told me." When I got that message earlier I almost lost my cool.
"Oh, um, he had a security camera installed and he had trapped his computer. That's what was beeping on his phone." Ok,whoa! I blink too many times trying to process what I'm hearing. "You okay?" Noah says after a minute stroking lightly my arm.
"Um, yeah. No, I'm fine. It just feels unreal. I mean when did my life become a hollywood scenario? Who's gonna play me in the movie?"
"A young Amanda Seyfried." Connor answers in seconds and we look at him. He seems really focused on the screen, it's surprising that he had been listening to us.
"Hey, douchebag. How about you do your job and let us talk?" Noah looks at him above his glasses trying to intimidate him, but he doesn't spare him a glance.
"I'm a problem-solver dude. She asked a question, I had the answer. Problem solved. And chill, I don't give a rat's ass about your lovey-dovey convos. Talk away."
"Do you guys ever give each other a break?" This constant teasing and swearing must be exhausted.

"No." They answer at the same time.
"That's healthy." I mumble under my breath "Anyway, as I was saying it just feels unreal. What did you find?"
"Well, we don't know exactly what we found cause it's coded. But whatever it is, it has something to do with that sketchy account I saw on your father's transactions."
"Ok. I guess that's something. When will we know more?" I sound impatient even though I'm doing my best to keep it down.
"When I'm done. I'm almost there, just let me work. Do not distract me." Connor says and he still doesn't look at me. How is he doing that it's beyond me. Listening everything we say and still work at the same time.
"How on earth is he doing that? He hasn't stopped working on that computer ever since I came here and yet he listens to everything we say!" I ask frustrated.
"Years of practice, I guess. He does the same thing when he's at the shop. That's why he is the number one gossip in the area."
"I'm not a gossip. I don't go around telling people what I've learned but I do like to listen."
"To private conversations!" Noah scoffs at him and for the first time he turns his gaze to us.
"How are they private? Most of the times I'm standing right there! I'm a fully functional human being, hence my hearing is working fine. So if they talk, I listen! It's not rocket science." Color rises on his face immediately and he looks kind of red right now, both in his face and scalp.
"Alright. No need to get upset." I'm trying to cool him down, cause my father's fate is resting on his hands. If he throws a fit now everything can go south and honestly I don't know the man, so I have to be careful.
"I'm not upset." He looks at me disgusted. "I'm not a girl to be upset."
I blink one too many times keeping my mouth shut as I don't know what to say.
"Are you done?" Noah chuckles next to me.
"Yeah, I'm good." He smiles and leans back on the couch.
"Then go back to work." Noah says in a commanding tone.
"No need to. He did it. I have the emails.
"What?" I half yell while standing up feeling my eyes falling out of their sockets.

"Oh, yeah. He planned the whole thing for months. Knew exactly what he was doing, ordered the drugs, had some guys plant them in the ship and then hacked to your father's account to pay them a boatload of money. After than he wiped everything but you're lucky cause he didn't do such a good job."
I'm welling up as I listen to him talk and I feel like a tone of weight leaving my body at once.
"So… my father is... innocent?" I can barely hear my voice. I'm afraid to say it out loud. Like somehow it'll stop being true.
"Yep. His only crime is trusting a son of a bitch."
Tears are escaping from my eyes and I feel the warmth of a hand rubbing my back. I turn to look at him and he is smiling. I throw myself at him, burying my head on the crook of his neck holding him tightly.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you." I repeat again and again.
He is stroking lightly my hair and lowers his head to my ear.
"Anything for you." He whispers and I can feel him smiling. I raise my head and place both my hands in each side of his face, bringing him to me. And I kiss the life out of him.
I'm so grateful, so happy and so absolutely in love with him I wanna shout it from every rooftop. But instead I leave my lips do the talking.
"Oh, God. I'm gonna throw up. Either cut it or get a room." Connor yells at us and I stop. I narrow my eyes at him. He's not gonna spoil my moment, I'm finally seeing a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
"We have to go to Danny. And then probably the FBI. And we need to do it fast." Noah says clearing his throat and I nod picking up my stuff. "Thanks bro for helping out. Couldn't done it without you." He says to Connor while fist-bumping him. A fist bump is not good enough. I throw myself at him for a great bear hug. I caught him off guard but hugs me anyway.
"Thank you very, very much." I let him go and I can see his cheeks painted a bit red. He clears his throat awkwardly and scratches the back of his neck.
"Yeah, no problem dude." He mumbles and I smile. He hands Noah the flash drive and he rush out the door.
The ride home seemed never ending. I was tapping nervously my feet the whole way there.
"Kettle, relax. We're almost there. It's over." I felt his hand on my thigh trying to relax me.
"It's just that, lately, the last minute something pops up and fucks everything up."
"This time it won't go that way. I promise. Everything is gonna be fine. I'll make sure of that."
I smile at him and I reach out to stroke the back of his neck, playing with his hair.
"What did I do to deserve you?"
"I could ask you the same thing you know. You can have any guy you want. They'd be lining up for you and yet for some reason you wanted me."
"I don't think you give yourself enough credit…"
"Pff." He scoffs.
"No, really. You're the perfect man. Sure, you are stubborn as hell and so damn proud it's exhausting, but I love everything about you."
He smiles and stares me with those big green eyes I love so, very much.
"Yeah, I bet all your life you dreamed to land a nerd." He marks sarcastically.
"I could live with the sarcasm, fyi. And you're not a nerd, if you rule out all those shows you watch."
"You just said you love the whole package!"
"I do but there is room for improvement." I chuckle with his reaction as he frowned his brows pretending I've offended him.
"I'm not buying. Anyway we're here." He says and parks the park. I jump out in one move like a jack in the box and start going up the stairs fast. I have the flash drive in my hand and I squeeze it lightly to make sure it's ok. I hear Noah's fast steps right behind me. When he is next to me I take out my keys and I open the door.
The moment we're inside the house my brother appears from the living room.
"Rach I have to…"
"No, Danny, hear me out first. Dad had nothing to do with the drugs. He was set up. Uncle Jeffrey did it. He framed dad."
"What?" I hear a voice coming from the living and the sound of footsteps follows. The moment I hear that voice my eyes are filled with tears.
"Daddy?"

Cadence managed to do that part. But a normal girl wouldn't then open her eyes again and learn that death is not as permanant for her as it is for other people. She can be reborn again, and again. Thomas the Brawler
Thomas doesn't remember what his last name was, before it became Bluebrim, a name belonging to another universe. He's also pretty sure he wasn't this stupid before he arrived, but what can you do, when a day that was supposed to begin with an interview to set your life back on track instead begins in a universe that makes no sense, with rules you can't begin to understand? Maybe he should have paid more attention to the avatar creation screen ... Content warnings: All of them. Seriously. Expect lots of blue screens to begin with. Don't expect a power-leveling fantasy, in which the lone hero beats up all the bad guys, and gets a harem of women. There's just a guy who treats character creation like an annoying series of pop-up advertisements, and the story is basically the ramifications of that. The main character has to learn to take the world he's found himself in seriously, and he'll learn the way most of us do, by doing it wrong first. This is, insofar as it is successful, a dark comedy fantasy. Also a bit of horror, particularly but not exclusively body horror. I'm pretty sure I've earned those Content Warning tags, so, uh, yeah. This is practice. Hopefully things improve as I go, and figure out what I'm doing wrong, but I make no guarantees things will ever get better. I've already made mistakes, I'll make more, and I'm happy to notice them each time I make them. You don't improve unless you fail. (On the plus side, it probably won't get much worse.) Feel free to point out anything you think I'm doing wrong; I don't promise to change anything, particularly if it's a matter of taste, but I am looking to improve, and figuring out what I need to improve goes faster if I don't have to try to figure it out myself. I've updated the earlier chapters for formatting, in the hope that it would make everything easier to read on mobile devices. Hopefully things work slightly better now, but please let me know if there are any issues anywhere.

When portals opened across the world and space, people were a bit terrified. Naturally, some people called it the end times or some other negative interpretation. Thankfully, the new arrivals managed to calm the masses, saying they were here from across dimensions in search of peaceful refuge. And so, began a technological revolution as the new cohabitants, who looked distinctly human if a bit off, openly shared some of their knowledge with us. Naturally, with the New Humans keeping some of the more dangerous techs to themselves and Old Humans being a greedy bunch, tensions are arising as old and new grudges rear their ugly heads. The world endlessly spins as history, both good and bad, is seemingly on its way to repeating itself. Only with other planets, and potentially other universes, being the backdrop this time. But that was big stuff that Alex had no real interest in. They only care about one thing and one thing. TDAG. Trans-Dimensional Adventure Games. Best VR system ever made.
