《Joker's Running Wild (Deltarune, Super Paper Mario, Kirby Super Star)》Chapter 17

"YOU'RE ALIVE!" Jevil cried. Marx had a confused look on his face. "I thought you told me he died. He doesn't look dead to me."
Dimentio looked away from Luigi and over at his two old friends. Jevil had the biggest smile on his face. "DIMMY, YOU'RE OKAY! WHAT HAPPENED?"
Dimentio sighed. "....Sorry, Jevil. My plan didn't work. I couldn't make a perfect world." Jevil's eyes softened. "OH.... WELL MAYBE IT'S ALL FOR THE BETTER, BECAUSE NOW WE CAN MAKE ONE TOGETHER!"
Dimentio looked back at Luigi. Luigi, the one who got him this second chance. He had to fulfill his end of the deal if he wanted his life back. He faced Jevil again.
"I'm sorry, Jevil. You don't belong here. Neither do you, Marx. You have to go home...."
Jevil's eyes went wide. "W-WHAT?" Dimentio clenched his fists and looked down. Jevil felt his heart shatter.
Luigi heard a new theme begin. It was like a strange mix between Jevil's theme and this new guy's. This couldn't be good.
Marx expression shifted to a slightly more angry one. "Ugh! Classic Dimentio! Such a hypocrite! Since when did YOU care about us being where we belong?? You're the one who started this whole world jumping mess! It's fine when you do it, but when Jevil does it you're upset?? Can't you see he did this for you??" Marx yelled. Dimentio glanced at Luigi, then back at Jevil and Marx. "I'm sorry."
Marx flew closer to Dimentio. "No, you're just jealous. Jealous that HE came closer to accomplishing your goal than you ever will. Jealous that HE was able to do this. You're jealous of him!!"
"No, Marx. That's not it. I'm not jealous of him!"
"Yes you are! You can't handle the fact that he's become more powerful than you!"
"That's NOT true!"
Marx was about to continue yelling, when Jevil walked forward and calmly placed his hand on Marx's shoulder. "STAND DOWN, FRIEND."
Jevil turned to face Dimentio. Dimentio could see the pain in Jevil's eyes. "I'm sorry," He said. Jevil waved his hand, before smiling his devil like smile and floating up into the air.
"SO DIMENTIO, I SEE YOU'VE CHOSEN YOUR MAN IN GREEN OVER ME."
Marx smiled and floated up next to Jevil. "Ha! Dimentio must be benefiting from this in some way. No way he would just help this guy for no reason!" Jevil nodded. "DON'T WORRY, WORRY. WE'LL SHOW HIM WE'RE WORTHY OF HIS TIME. EVERYTHING WILL STILL FALL INTO PLACE, THEN WE CAN ALL PLAY!"
Luigi ran up next to Dimentio. "Okay, how much more time until we can bring Mario back??" Dimentio looked around for a clock. "Uhh, looks like we still got five minutes. Your brother better have found Jevil's friend, or we'll be in serious trouble. Just Jevil was difficult enough, but Jevil AND Marx...there's no way we could come out on top."
Dimentio gave Luigi a look. "Unless....you give me my magic back."
Luigi looked down. ".....fine. But don't ditch me. You still have to stay near me. And don't turn against me, or I will be forced to send you back to the Underwhere, and believe me, I don't want to do that." Dimentio laughed. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get it. Now gimme my magic!"
Luigi sighed, "Alright, Dimentio, I'm giving you all your magic back, ONLY until we no longer need it."
Dimentio could feel his power come back to him. He felt stronger, more like himself. It had been so long since he's had magic like this coursing though his body. All his powers, fully back.

Dimentio floated up about a foot into the air. "Ah ha ha~! Much better!"
He stood back to back with Luigi now. "Okay, now watch and learn!" Dimentio summoned a magic projectile. "Whoa, what are you doing?? We don't wanna hurt them!" Luigi argued. Dimentio smirked. "Oh, Relax. I'm not going to actually hit him. I'm just gonna use it to throw him off."
Dimentio looked up at Jevil and Marx, who were still talking to each other. He aimed his magic projectile for them and fired, knowing that they'd easily be able to teleport out of the way,
Only the magic projectile came out bigger and faster than he anticipated.
"Jevil, WATCH OUT!" Marx called, pushing Jevil aside, taking the hit. His HP lowered drastically.
Dimentio's eyes went wide. He didn't mean to do that. "Marx?? Marx, I'm so sorry!"
Luigi quickly looked at Dimentio. "What was that?? I thought you said you weren't going to hit them!!!" Dimentio looked down at his hands. "I-I don't know what happened. It's like I have less control over my magic!"
Marx glared down at Dimentio. It hurt, but he was fine. He grunted. "You were going to hit him, weren't you??" Marx floated down closer, summoning some arrows. "No, no! I didn't mean to!" Dimentio argued.
"The fact that you ruined his life wasn't enough for you?? You had to end it as well?"
"I didn't ruin his life. He would have likely gone down a similar path anyway. It's in his code! Why do you hate me so much Marx?? You were my best friend! I loved you!" Marx looked down. "You didn't love me. You treated me just like Jevil. First you showed up at my home, convinced me that I was worthless and that my own world didn't need me, then proceeded to manipulate me into following you around in search of a perfect world for YOU! Then you found Jevil and wanted him as well, making me feel like I wasn't even enough for you! I wasn't enough for my world, or you, or anyone!"
Dimentio's eyes softened. "Marx, I wanted you with me because I liked you. I wanted you in my perfect world with me. I wanted you by my side!" Marx looked down, before his eyes hardened. "No. You are selfish."
"Why are you even here Marx?? I thought you were finally satisfied with your own game! I begged you to join me again and refused!" Marx laughed. "Why, I'm here because Jevil showed up and asked me for help. He brought me all this way to make a perfect world for you, and now you're breaking his little heart, Dimentio. He did this for you, and it's still not enough. You can't handle that he's the one accomplishing your goal."
Marx seemed mad. His cheeks puffed up. It looked like he was about to attack. Dimentio's eyes went wide. He snapped to teleport....but it didn't work. He just flickered in the same spot. "Huh? Why isn't this working??"
Marx prepared to fire, when suddenly a small line of green thunder whizzed by him. Not hitting him, but throwing him off. The music shifted to another theme. Not Jevil's theme. Not Marx's theme, but Luigi and Dimentio's theme. The Ultimate Show.
Dimentio looked over at Luigi. Luigi was in a fighting stance. Dimentio smiled and laughed. "Ah ha ha~! Go Luigi! Score for team Super Dimentio!" Luigi rolled his eyes. "Please don't call us that."

Dimentio snapped his fingers again, and accidentally teleported right over Luigi. He fell onto the man in green and they both fell onto the ground. "Oww, why'd you do that??" Luigi asked. Dimentio quickly picked himself up. "I-I don't know. Me suddenly getting all my powers back must be messing with them. My magic is incredibly unstable."
Jevil smiled. He's never heard this music before. "OH, DIMMY! IS THIS YOUR THIRD THEME??" Dimentio looked over at Jevil, then down at Luigi. He helped Luigi up, then held Luigi's hand in the air. "No, it's OUR theme! This is The Ultimate Show!"
Luigi smiled for a second. He was actually having fun fighting by Dimentio's side. He could see why Mr. L was best friends with him, even though he was a bad guy.
Luigi then looked over at the clock. "Hey, Dimentio. I think it's time to bring Mario back!" Dimentio nodded, then snapped his fingers.
It didn't work.
"What's the holdup?? Why aren't you bringing him back Dimentio??"
"I'm trying! Give me a minute!"
Dimentio continued snapping. "Ugh, it's no use. It's not working. I can't fully teleport anything that far??" Luigi's eyes went wide. "WHAT??" Dimentio looked down. "You heard me. I can't do it. I'm sorry Luigi!"
Marx was firing a line of arrows at them, but Luigi was able to pull them both aside so they could dodge them.
Dimentio thought for a second, ignoring everything happening around them while Luigi kept making sure no one got hit. "Maybe I can partially teleport one of us there. Just for a minute so we can send a quick message." Luigi met Dimentio's eyes. "What do you mean??"
"I can't teleport anyone there and back completely, but I think I can partially do it. So I can get you there, but you'll appear like a hologram. Your body will still be here, but they'll be able to see you there. It doesn't require nearly as much control as a full teleportation does, so I think we can do it."
Luigi nodded. "Okay. We can try that. I'll just explain the situation to them. Until your Magic becomes more stable we can just continue trying to hold off Jevil and...Marx it was?" Dimentio nodded. "Yes. Marx. His name is Marx. And he's my best friend. So, please don't let me actually hurt him." Luigi looked slightly hurt. "Hey, I thought Mr. L was your best friend." Dimentio facepalmed. "Fine. Marx is my old best friend. Mr. L is my new best friend." Luigi smiled. "Alright!"
Mario and Seam waited for what seemed like an eternity. "How long does two hours take??" Mario asked. Seam sighed. "It's tough to tell time in here. Sometimes hours feel like months, other times they feel like seconds." Mario sighed, when he heard his brother's voice.
"Mario? Mario? Can you hear me?" Luigi's voiced asked. Mario quickly jerked up. "Luigi??"
Just then, it looked like a slightly transparent Luigi was standing in front of them, flickering in and out of view.
"Dimentio, I don't think it worked. I can't see or hear them," Luigi said. Mario ran forward. "No, Luigi. I see you! What's going on??"
"What? .....Okay. Just speak anyway in case they can hear me? Alright. Mario, we're having trouble bringing you back. Things aren't looking so good here, but don't worry. I-I'm sure it'll all be fine. Just stand by and we'll get you back as soon as possible!"
Mario's eyes went wide. "Wait, what?? So I'm stranded here??"
Luigi's image looked around. "Okay, I really hope you could hear that. B-bye Mario." Just then, the image of Mario's brother disappeared.
Mario ran over to where the image just was. "No, no no no! Luigi, wait! Ugh, how are we gonna get back now??" Seam shrugged. "Looks like you're stuck here. Why don't we have some tea. I'll toast us to being trapped!" Mario shook his head. "No, no. Luigi said that things weren't looking so good over there. We have to find a way to get back!"
Mario looked around the room, before his eyes met Seam's. "Wait, didn't Dimentio say you were a Magician?" Seam nodded. "Yes. Back in the day I was the Court Magician. Jevil, the Court Jester." Mario snapped his fingers. "That's it then! YOU just teleport us out!"
Seam looked down. "Ahh....I can't do that."
Luigi and Dimentio continued fighting off Marx and Jevil. Luigi used his thunderhand, but made sure not to hit them. Dimentio on the other hand, was trying to regain control of his power. It took everything he had not to hit them. Marx seemed actually focused on fighting, while Jevil looked like he was playing around, just having a good time.
"Luigi, come here, I wanna try this!" Dimentio called. Luigi ran over. "Okay, I need you to zap my projectile. I think that if we mix magic with your green thunder, it could act as a thunder rage and shock both of them." "Well, will it hurt them?" Luigi asked. Dimentio shrugged. "I'm not sure if items effect them the same way, since they're not from this world, but I know it'll give them a little shock and throw them off."
Luigi nodded. "Okay." Dimentio summoned a magic projectile and threw it into the air. "Okay, NOW!" Luigi show the projectile, making it explode with a green hue. Jevil and Marx we're minorly shocked, but minimal health was lowered.
"Yeah! Great shot Luigi!" Dimentio yelled. He held out his hand, waiting for Luigi to fist bump it. Luigi giggled and did. Dimentio smiled at this. "Score for team Super Dimentio?" He asked. Luigi shook his head. "No. I'm still not letting you call us that."
Marx looked at Jevil. "Okay, who even is the guy with the Mustache?" Jevil giggled. "THAT'S THE MAN IN GREEN. DIMMY LOOOVES HIM." Marx snickered. "Really? Him? Wow...I didn't think he'd be Dimentio's type."
Dimentio clenched his fists. "I can hear you two you know!" Luigi smirked. "Yeah! And he doesn't LOOOVE me. I'm just his best friend." Marx laughed. "Oh, sweet, innocent child. I remember when he told me I was his best friend. Obviously he's lying. He's just using the title to get you to do what he wants. I know him better than most, and I know that friendships mean nothing to him!"
"Shut up Marx, that's not true-" "It is true!!! Tell me, why are you here with him right now? It's probably for your own benefit." Dimentio looked down.
Marx was right. Every friend he's ever made has been for his own benefit. He only befriended L in order to use him as a pawn for his perfect world, he originally befriended Marx and Jevil for similar reasons, and Luigi. He was only helping Luigi because Luigi had control over him. Luigi had his freedom in his hands.
"Marx, Maybe I had selfish intentions when I first met you, but you're my friend. You were the only one I could trust. The only one who understood me. Marx, I don't want to fight you."

8 1893Old Riding Author Lunatic Asylum
Just off the A19, in the dark, incomprehensible lands known as Yorkshire, there lies a town. A town where shadow-silent alleys glint with the secret hunger of knives. Where blood soaks the chipboard window shutters of forsaken terraces stretching off into the night. Where the smog-choked air rattles with the depraved laughter echoing out from clubs that can only generously be described as post-apocalyptic. Well, that’s Middlesbrough. But down the A19 a bit (an impossibly long way down, actually) there lies another town: Raughnen, in the ancient, forgotten Old Riding. It is an equal match in muggery and thuggery alike. It also has magic spells and pointy wizard hats. And now, across the miles and across all sensibilities, a pretty nasty power (a magic one) calls out for its pretty nasty counterpart (a decidedly unmagic one): a proper sound Boro lad. Nothing good can come of it. This is a collection of one novella and four connected short stories: I. A Yorkshire Summoning II. Old Riding Day Trip (the novella) III. Heaven is a Parmo IV. Death on the 66 V. Death on the 257 In total, this comprises 34 chapters totalling around 35,000 words, so try not to worry. It will be over relatively quickly. There are three more short stories with more tenuous links to the core collection: Rush, Paper Round and Scenario 79: Sausage Fingers, all of which can be found in my collection Short Records of Misadventure. Reading these may allow you to make more sense of certain parts of the story, if any sense is to be made at all. NOTE: There are instances of prejudice and discrimination within these stories, including elements of sexism and ageism, which are purely the thoughts and actions of the characters involved and which certainly do not reflect my own views on these matters. ANOTHER NOTE; A WARNING, PERHAPS: This can get a bit weird. In less than 150 pages, we have four viewpoints, first and third person narratives, and a completely disjointed plot with lots of gaps, dead ends and no real resolution. Also ZERO lunatic asylums. It's all a bit odd. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, which it most likely isn't, it might be best to move on now.
