Amelia💗👯: huh?
Sandra: Don't act like you didn't just see the paragraph I just sent you🙄
Amelia💗👯: I just wanna know if I read that right...Kevin Reed asked you to prom and you said no?
Sandra: yuppp
(2)Sandra: Can I call you now?
Amelia💗👯: I'm dying rn and I don't want you to hear my voice.
Sandra: I've seen you sick...I think that's worse.
Amelia💗👯: stfu. Did you talk to him after that?
I sat up on my bed, feeling her phone buzz again and again at the messages from Kevin himself. I tapped into the message logs to see the latest messages.
🙄
I sighed, looking at those messages because he was right then moved back to Amelia.
Sandra: Yeah, I'm about to message him.
Amelia💗👯: good luck
I move back to my messages with Kevin.
Sandra: Kevin shut upp
Sandra: clearly you weren't.
😶
Sandra: I don't remember you being this clingy back in the day.
Sandra: okay bye.
Sandra: future prom king? You're so sure of yourself?
👑😏
Sandra: I feel sorry for the girl whose going to fill that position.
Sandra: BYE KEVIN
Sandra: I don't wanna talk to you.
Sandra: why would I?
😛
Sandra: mention prom again and you're going to catch a block
Sandra: I will block you if you say it again.
😉
I raised my eyebrows that he noticed this. Why did he care?
Sandra: just sister issues.
Sandra: if you want a sister, you can take mine.
I lied down in my bed, turning my body to face the wall , my phone practically in front of my face.
Sandra: she's just changing or something.
Sandra: can we talk about something else?
I let out a breath of relief that he wasn't the type to urge to continue the conversation. Only Amelia did that but that was because she was like my other half. But then he sent another message.

"You blocked him?" Amelia asked me, blowing her nose into her tissue.
"I told him I didn't want see the word prom again and he said it. He got blocked."
"Don't you think you're being a bit too harsh on the guy?"
"Not really. I mean...I'm so confused. Like, why after almost three years is he talking to me?"
"Maybe he wants to rekindle your romance."
"What romance? We were 14. It wasn't romance. I liked him and I wasn't even sure if he liked me back. All we did was talk like we were really good friends back then. I'm not even sure he was aware that I liked him."
"Well, everyone was aware that you two possibly liked each other since we all thought you were dating."
"I can't believe you thought that."
"We weren't that close that year as we are now. I knew you liked him because you told me you did so I assumed you were dating. Duh." She sounded a little funny with her clogged up nose and I bit back a laugh. She rarely ever got sick but when she did it was like months of sick accumulating appeared.
"Anyway, that romance you think will happen won't happen again."
I spoke way too soon because the same guy was walking towards Amelia and I in the hallway. He stopped in front of me and shoved his phone in my face. "You actually blocked me?"
Kevin Reed.
He was cute.
He was funny. Never failed to make me laugh whether I wanted to or not.
He was easy to talk to.
Those were the adjectives I used to describe him when I was 14.
Now I was 17 and having little text conversations with him led me to believe that the cute part was still true.

The funny part I wasn't sure about but right now one adjective came to my mind.
Annoying.
"I told you not to say the word prom."
"You told me to change the topic." He countered.
"Still."
"C'mon Sandra, that's not fair."
"I think it is."
"It really isn't." Amelia butted in and I glared at her. She smirked. "I'll see you later. Bye Kevin."
"Bye Amelia." He gave her a smile before looking back at me with a frown. "Unblock me."
"No."
"Please?"
A question came to my mind. "Why do you want to ask me to prom?"
"Why not?" He said, leaning back, his hands in his pockets. The way he said it made it seem like that was enough of an answer.
"I need a more valid reason than that." I told him just when the bell rang.
"Just unblock me and you'll find out."
"Really? We're going to play mystery?" His hair fell into his eyes when I said that and I watched him push his hair back.
"Unblock me and you'll find out sooner." He looked pretty determined for me to unblock him. Especially since he was looking at me with those eyes of his.
I sighed, looking down at the phone in my hand and he cleared his throat after silence between us. "I'm not playing you."
I looked up at him. "What?"
"I'm not playing with you. I'm not like Ian who's going to hit on another girl while having a girlfriend. I'm not trying to ask you out to prom just because of a bet or something because that's pretty low. Okay?"
I stayed silent.
"Now I'm going to head to English right now and if I still can't send you a message, I'm finding a way to hack into your phone."
"That sounds slightly creepy." Another adjective to add.
He just smiled, a smile that lit up his whole face. He walked by me just when the first period bell rang for the last time. "I'll talk to you later."

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter.
