《Breathe Princess (Daryl Dixon Love Story)》Chapter Thirty Two

Daryl had walked over towards Rick, trying to get him to register what was going on around him, but I knew from personal experience that there was no getting through to him, not right now.I was the same when I had lost Jacob, I couldn't even process what was going on around me, I was surprised I even realised what was going on around me at the time and I know that Rick is going through the same thing. Carl was currently crying into my neck, one of my hands smoothing down his hair. I couldn't say anything to either of them, I just had to sit there in silence and wait for Carl to stop crying.

Herschel was checking up on the baby, the baby I hadn't even properly registered.Carl pulled away from me and simply leant against one of the lone tables in the courtyard, leaving me standing alone.

"What are we going to feed her?" I ask, walking over and standing beside Daryl as Herschel looks over the baby. "We haven't got anything to feed her." I sigh and run a hand through my hair. I don't know why we didn't think of something like this before hand. Daryl grabbed a hold of my hand, giving it a slight squeeze.

"Good news is she looks healthy. But she needs formula and soon or she won't survive." Herschel informed us all as he tried to balance on one foot without using his crutches.

"No way." I scrunched my eyebrows together as I look up towards Daryl who drops my hand and grabs his crossbow off the floor.

"You wanna elaborate?" I ask, not having the slightest idea what he's going on about.

"Not her, we ain't losin' nobody else. I'm goin' on a run."

I don't know why, but just the idea getting all protective over this little girl made me incredibly happy.

"I'll back you up." Maggie and Glenn volunteered. I would have done the same but I knew there was no chance that Daryl would let me out on a run with him, not with what had just happened here. He would want me to stay and make sure everyone was alright; mainly Rick.

"Okay, think where we're goin', Beth." Daryl called Beth over to him for a moment as the rest of us just watched, Maggie walking over with him. "You two get the fence," Daryl called to Oscar and Axel. "Too many pile up, we got ourselves a problem." I smile at the thought of Daryl taking charge with what was going on. He always did have Rick's back, ever since shit went down with Shane back at Herschel's farm. He was looking out for the group and the baby.

"Daryl," I called as he, Maggie and Glenn all went to walk away. "Be careful out there okay, I can't lose anyone else, not right now. I'll kick your ass if you come back hurt okay?" The corner of his mouth turned up in the smallest smile, knowing I wouldn't even be able to bruise him let alone kick his ass.

"Yes Ma'am." He smiled slightly and kissed my forehead, walking off as I turned back towards the others. Rick had run off. I didn't know where but I knew that he would want to be on his own. I just prayed that he knew what he was doing and he was going to be safe. I didn't want Carl to lose his dad too.

Glenn had come back only minutes after he'd left with Maggie and Daryl. Apparently there wasn't going to be enough room for a car to get through the roads, the bike being the only thing able. This meant that only Daryl and Maggie could go. I was okay with that, I just hoped that Daryl would be safe.

All of us were stood around in the main area of the cell block, everyone on the edge of their seats, so to speak, for several reasons. The only sound you could hear was the baby's cries as clearly Carl was struggling to look after her. Everyone seemed to be getting pretty annoyed with the sound of the baby, but no one else stepped forwards to help.

"Carl," He looked up at me as I called his name and walked over to him, holding my hands up to indicate him to pass me the baby. "Back when the world was good, I needed the money, took up baby sitting. See if I can't get her to stop crying." Carl handed me over the baby and I smiled down at her, singing a lullaby under my breath to try and get her to stop crying. It was thankfully starting to work.

I looked up towards the door as the sounds of feet came rushing through, Maggie calling out to her sister.

I smiled a little as Daryl followed behind, pulling his poncho off and walking over towards me and the baby, looking down at the still slightly fussing child with a small smile on his face.

"How's she doin'?" He asked, practically beaming at the baby. "Shh." Daryl hushed, picking the baby up out of my arms. I never thought I would see the day that Daryl Dixon looked after a baby. Not to mention it was making me see him as being incredibly cute rather than bad ass.

Daryl held her close to him, her cries stopping almost instantly. The smile he threw me was slightly smug but all in all I think he was just proud he managed not to break her. Beth walks over with a bottle in her hand, passing it over to Daryl who begins feeding the baby.

"I think this is the cutest thing you've ever done." I smile up at him, he simply rolls his eyes in response.

"Shut up." This makes me laugh at him. He likes to pretend he doesn't care about people but we all knew that wasn't true. Despite the events that were happening around us with Lori and Rick going AWOL, I was happy in this moment. For once we weren't worrying about every little detail. Sure we were worrying about Rick and how Carl was holding up. But it was quiet and that's all we needed.
