"Okay we have clothes, a toothbrush and some pj's. Do we need anything else?"

Me and Vanessa were helping Sara pack an overnight bag for Evie. This weekend was going to be the first time that Evie was gonna stay with Steve. They had met up at a diner a couple of days ago to discuss some things and introduce Evie to Steve. She had also sat her down and explained everything in a way a 5 year old would understand. Poor kid had no idea why she would be staying with this random guy every weekend. She didn't mind tho. According to Sara he was nice to her.

Sara was a nervous wreck obviously. Their lunch went well apparently, but I was still concerned about her. She seemed to have a lot of trouble with not having feelings for this guy and I can't seem to understand why. Me and Vanessa were worried out of our minds, but tried to hide it for Sara. She had enough on her mind.

"I think we're good." She said.

"When will I come back mommy?"

"Well because it's the first time I will pick you up tomorrow morning, okay?"

Evie nodded. Sara asked me to drop Evie off with her. I was more than happy to. As soon as we were ready I gave V a kiss and we headed out the door.

"If anything happens you know I'm always here. Just call me if something's wrong." I told Sara as we drove through the city. Steve lived in Brooklyn, so it was about an hour driving.

"I will. It'll be fine tho. He wouldn't pull something his first time having Evie over."

I hope so Sara. I really do. I thought to myself. It stayed quiet for a while.

"Lin?"

"Yeah?"

"Can I maybe stay with you guys? I don't know if I can handle being alone while Evie's with him."

"Of course sweetie. Of course."

"Thanks!"

We parked the car in front of the building. It wasn't one of the nicest neighborhoods, but it was fine. We walked upstairs towards his apartment. I knocked on the door.

"Sara how are you! And Lin." He looked me up and down, clearly not liking my presence.

"I'm good." Sara said.

He turned his attention towards Evie now. "And how's my little girl doing."

My stomach turned upside down as he said this. My little girl? How dare he! He has met her once! I could see the discomfort in Sara's eyes too.

"I'm great Steve!" Evie said. I was sort of relieved she didn't call him dad. He doesn't deserve that title. I tried to calm myself down.

"She has everything she needs in this bag." Sara said, while handing it over.

"Ahh great!"

"Evie why don't you come inside. I have some cartoons playing on the tv for you and do you know what we're gonna have for dinner? Pizza!!"

"Yeeeeeeeeh." Evie yelled, her voice filled with joy. This kid was so oblivious to everything that was going on. Maybe that was better.

"We should get going now." Sara said softly. "Have fun and.....please take good care of her."

"I will. I'll see you tomorrow." With that he closed the door.

Sara and I started walking down the stairs and towards the car. As soon as we got inside she broke down. She had managed to keep herself together up till now. I gently rubbed her back as she let go of all her nerves.

"I'm scared Lin. I'm so so scared."

"Listen, it's just one night. Nothing will happen. Tomorrow morning we're going to pick her up and she'll be fine."

"What if she's not?!"

"Then we'll go to the police and neither of you will ever have to see that man again."

She nodded, but I could see she wasn't content with the answer. We went home, had dinner and sat down on the couch with a glass of wine. I sensed she didn't want to talk about it so V put on a comedy movie and she seemed to be able to relax a little bit.

The next morning we were all up early. Sara was anxious to pick Evie up.

"It's too early Sara. They're probably not even up yet."

"I know, I know."

She nervously paced around the apartment as V and I cleaned up the breakfast table. I started making some coffee and brought it to the living room. We all sat down.

"Do you think this is something you would be able to do long term?" I asked her.

"If it goes right, I guess so. Evie doesn't seem to mind."

I nodded silently. I wasn't just afraid Steve would hurt either of them, I was also worried he'll start thinking he has a say in Evie's life. He doesn't.

A text from Steve came in saying we could pick Evie up. We immediately got in the car and drove off, both anxious to see Evie. We walked up to his apartment and knocked on the door.

"Sara, Lin! Good morning!" He said, his voice almost too cheerful.

"Where's Evie?" Sara immediately demanded. Steve sighed annoyed.

"Evie! You mother is here!" She immediately came running out.

"Mom!" She shrieked excitedly, while launching herself into her mom's arms for a hug.

"Hey baby! Did you have fun with your father?" She asked almost cautiously. Of course Evie was completely oblivious to any of this. She nodded happily. If anything had happened she would never be this excited.

Steve handed me her overnight bag and I slung it over my shoulder.

"So everything went well?" I asked.

"Of course." He answered, clearly not liking my suspicious tone. I nodded and put my hand on Sara's shoulder.

"Well then, I think it's time for us to go." Sara nodded.

"I'll talk to you Steve." She said. He said goodbye and closed the door. We made our way back to the car, while Evie started talking about her weekend.

Everything seemed alright. I just hoped it would stay that way....
