《Whodunnit ?》Chapter 14 - Alienated

The next morning's calm silence was rudely interrupted by a loud ringing sound, which stirred every guest awake from their deep sleep.
"It's six in the morning," Natalie whined to Nelson as they strolled out of their rooms simultaneously. Nelson replied with a groggy groan as they both stumbled towards the core of the noise.
They both stopped in their tracks when they saw Giles at the bottom of the stairs, ringing a rather large silver bell which was placed on top of a random stand. A few moments later, the remaining guests stopped at the top of the stairs, giving Giles questionable looks.
"Ah, guests! I apologise for the early wake-up call. But the killer has given me the following instructions." Giles cleared his throat before reading the note supplied by the killer.
"Mortals, today is going to be a lot more different than any other day. Firstly, you will all have only twenty minutes to talk among yourselves and share or don't share the evidence you found in your areas. Immediately after that twenty minutes, the riddle will be cast upon you all. After the riddle is over, a twist will be revealed. That twist? You'll have to wait and see. But for now Mortals, please talk among yourselves."
Giles invited the guests all into the parlor before disappearing to leave the guests to discuss what they found the night before.
Dan, Jamie & Natalie took their usual spot, whereas the majority alliance awkwardly shuffled to different areas of the room. Nelson, Michelle & Brianna were trying their best to shuffle away from Greg and Reynold, who had suddenly become prime suspects from the night before. After moving like chess pieces, the minority alliance invited the other three to join them in their discussion. Excluding the doctor and the nutritionist.
"Are you guys just gonna cast us out?" Greg scolded from across the room as the group of six huddled in close proximity.
Nelson took the calm approach, "You have to understand that we really can't trust you with this recent discovery." Truth was, Nelson felt bad for the two guests being almost alienated, but the recent evidence against them would be stupid to forget.
"How could you just exclude us off clearly planted sabot-" Greg was red in the face when Reynold softly pulled him back from charging at the group of six.
Reynold whispered to the Texan "Listen, they're just clearly paranoid about this, We'll just have to do this riddle on our own. And probably get through the dinner as well before they come back to us."
Greg simply let out a frustrated nod before him and Reynold reconvened to the whiskey chamber to discuss what they found at the morgue and the crime scene.
Meanwhile, the group of six discussed what they found. Natalie, Jamie, and Dan were ecstatic, to say the least, knowing they had three extra people to put their point across what they found at the areas.
It wasn't long until the topic of the news articles came into discussion across the six of them.
"Why would Talia have them?" Natalie asked in the tight huddle.
Michelle rubbed her chin. "I've been thinking recently that maybe she was undercover. What if she was just collecting information on Greg & Reynold, and was just trying to get enough information together to accuse one of them of being the killer?"
Dan made a face. "Nah, I don't think so. It makes no sense, why would she collect information. If I was her I would have just presented the first bit of information I got. Why wait and risk death? Plus I've been in her room recently, I've never seen them before."

The group all gave Dan suspicious looks.
"Not in that way. We've just been getting close recently."
The group gave Dan another set of suspicious looks.
"Not in that way either." The footballer smirked slightly.
After the girls finished discussing what they found at the last known whereabouts, Nelson & Dan described what they found at the crime scene.
"There were dark footprints. The bottom and the sides of the hot tub were melted and there was an empty test tube of something hidden behind one of the sun tanners." Nelson finished his observation in seconds.
"Well, there is more..." Dan commented. However before realising Nelson covered everything at the crime scene he just simply piped down.
Jamie went next, being the only person in the group to go to the morgue for Talia's investigation.
"There was quite a lot of trauma on Talia. Starting at the top, Talia had frothing at the mouth and also something which looked a lot like vomit."
"Interesting," Michelle commented.
"Then getting to her body, her shoulders were bubbling heavily, it was almost like they were melting off. She also had these weird red marks which I can't put my finger on as of where they are from."
As the group of six continued chatting, Greg and Reynold were trying to put together what they found in their areas.
"At the morgue, she had some stuff in her mouth and her skin was in some pretty bad shape." Greg pointed to himself, the areas of which Talia's marks were the worst.
Reynold grew frustrated. "That's way too fucking blunt."
The doctor was frustrated at the fact that the nutritionist was being so blunt with his findings at the morgue. From what he knew, any small clue missed could be the difference between a spared card, and a scared card.
A few minutes later (exactly on time) Giles returned to the parlor. A note from the killer in hand, and eight small square marble slates in hand.
"My dear guests. It is time for another riddle from the killer." All of the guests strolled over to Giles as he started to read the note from the killer.
"For this first section,
You need to have an eye for inspection.
Raid every cupboard,
Raid every stair.
Once the clue is found, spray with a scare.
Then, the next clue will appear, you will need to be ready and aware.
If you don't want to be the next guest to threat about your overall welfare."
Giles carefully placed each marble slate into each guests hands before they all rushed off in different directions.
Greg & Reynold took off into the kitchen, Michelle & Brianna went upstairs and the other four (Dan, Natalie, Nelson & Jamie) went out to the garden.
-
"What does it mean by 'spray' ?" Greg questioned the doctor as they looked at the contents of the dining room table.
Reynold inspected the slate closely, turning it over and over again. "Maybe we need to find something to spray onto the slate which would give us a clue?"
Greg grabbed the air freshener placed in the centre of the dining room table and started furiously spraying the substance on the marble slate. Nothing emerged.
"This is like looking for a needle in a haystack," Reynold complained as he frantically searched the dining room from head to toe.
-
Brianna & Michelle searched in silence as they looked through the now drier spa. The two girls sprayed the slate with several of the beauty products in the spa. But none of them displayed any clues to the young females.

"Did Talia have any perfume in her room?" Brianna wondered if Michelle possibly noticed if the youngest guest had perfume in her room, which could be sprayed onto the square slate.
Michelle shook her head. "No, I remember Talia telling me she didn't like perfume that much on like the second day I think?" Michelle cast her mind back to the conversation herself and Talia had after dinner on the second day. Michelle had secretly snuck into Talia's suite so she could mingle with her, Michelle found Talia a lot of fun in the manor.
The kickboxer noticed the slate of marble given to them was the same material as of the hot tub, which gave her an idea. She ran water from the hot tub tap onto the slab. But alas, there was no clues.
"This is bullshit. How do you they expect us to get this riddle?" Brianna groaned as she stormed out of the spa, leaving Michelle on her own.
-
The remaining four guests (Dan, Natalie, Nelson & Jamie) weren't having any luck in the garden area either. The small garden shed, located a good walk away from the manor itself provided no clues. Nelson sprayed fertilizer, Dan sprayed weed killer, Natalie sprayed fly repellent and Jamie even broke his slate apart (too see if there was a hidden clue inside) but there were no clues.
"What do you thinks going to happen to this slate once we spray it?" Natalie asked her group, genuinely confused as of what would actually happen.
"Hopefully it'll display the name of the killer so we could all get out of this shit-hole," Dan said sarcastically as he started to lose hope.
Nelson smirked, "We could only dream that would actually happen."
Jamie frowned "Well it's not going to, guys. And I think we need to move on from this area, we have no idea how Greg & Reynold are doing. " The carpenter was defiantly feeling grumpy this morning. The early morning wake up call from the killer (delivered by Giles) was a big hindrance in the eldest guests mood. and the fact that he was now having to do the hardest riddle yet, at not only 7 AM yet was making him boil like a kettle.
After a few more minutes of inspection, the group decided collectively to go to the morgue, thinking that there'd be some sort of body spray to put on the slates in the ice cold room.
-
Brianna was walking up and down the Morgue hallway again and again. The twenty-four-year-old didn't understand what the riddle was implying. She didn't know what room to search for at all. After a few more moments of confused groans and questionable noises. She took a break from standing and started to think hard. What would the killer want to be sprayed?. She thought back just half an hour earlier when Dan and Nelson were talking about their findings at the crime scene.
Melted hot tub, an empty test tube of a liquid. Those two findings kept on ringing through her head as she tried to think of how they incorporated with the riddle. Jamie's findings at the Morgue also brought more questions. Bubbled skin, weird red marks. What did they mean?. Suddenly it hit her like a ton of bricks.
Remembering back to her painful science classes as a kid, she remembered how Mr. Lew once poured high concentration acid all over the table, and how in minutes the table had almost completely bubbled away. She always remembered when Lauren Harris got the same acid on her hat on the coat rack, and how it left an awful hole and bubbling. Brianna knew it was a long shot, but she decided to start looking for some sort of acid. The only remaining question for her was... what room?
-
Reynold & Greg were now in the parlor, predominately in the bar area. Where they knew there were liquids (in the form of alcohol) and pumping squeezers nearby on the table. For the next five minutes, both men carefully placed every seemingly expensive wine, whiskey, and any other alcoholic drink into the squeezer and sprayed. But nothing appeared other than several ugly stains on the small marble slate.
"We need to be looking for things that are going to melt the slab, like an acid or something. What's alcohol going to do?" It finally clicked for Reynold that he needed to find something which was actually going to have an impact on the slate.
Greg tried to convince the doctor that the killer could have manipulated any substance into the clue, but Reynold wasn't convinced and took off out of the parlor. Leaving Greg alone.
-
Brianna inspected the rooms in the morgue's hallway. She hadn't been down there herself a lot so she didn't know what rooms to expect. Upon opening the third door, she noticed that she had stumbled upon the laundry room.
The girl was tentative at first to go into the room, but the familiar sound of footsteps from behind her motivate her to quickly shut the door. It only took her a few moments to find the clue. Laid out neatly on top of one of the washing machines was a small rectangle note with the Rue Manor sign.
"Congratulations you have found the second clue, the answer is in this room.
Get any of this substance on your hands? It'll be your impending doom."
Brianna furrowed her eyebrows at the last line of the clue. "What did that mean?" She thought to herself. However, it didn't take her long to notice the eight pairs of thick, black leather gloves. Which put her at ease a little bit more.
However, Brianna's glory didn't last long until Reynold stormed into the laundry room, eyeing up Brianna before grabbing his clue off the washing machine. He later grabbed his pair of gloves as well and put them on before raiding the laundry room cupboards. Brianna followed him and did the same.
It didnt take long for the two of them to find what they were looking for. A very high concentration hydrochloric acid (which was labeled). Brianna & Reynold quickly, but surely tipped the acid into a random sprayer which was on a countertop. The two then sprayed the acid onto the slate, within seconds the slate started to slowly melt and bubble away.
"Wow!" Brianna gasped as the marble started disappearing in her hand.
As both the guests looked down at the two slates which bubbled away, Reynold noticed that the very washing machine which had the clue on it had something inside.
"Wait, what's that?" Reynold knelt down to the washing machines door level and softly tugged on the door.
The only inhabitant in the washing machine was a small black device, almost the size of a TV remote labeled Taser Model TXC52, along with it was another label titled Electronic Control Device
The 'Electronic Control Device' had a set of bullet points.
"I think this is police taser," Reynold commented. "My dad was a police officer. I remember seeing this model around the house."
"Alright then." Brianna nodded along. Part of Brianna was happy that she found the riddle's answer. But another part of her was angry that one of the targets (who was supposed to be alienated) now had a pretty-much-guaranteed safety.
The estate bell then rang throughout the whole manor. Signaling to the remaining guests that the riddle was over.
-
Natalie, Nelson, Dan & Jamie were the first to reconvene to the parlour, curious to find out who won the riddle.
"Hopefully it was one of the girls." Jamie hoped as he shuffled around nervously.
Greg returned to the parlor next, which excited a few of the other four as they knew that one of the suspicious two hadn't won the riddle. However, when Michelle was the last person to arrive at the parlor. And when she mentioned that Brianna went off on her own. Worry ensued.
"Did Brianna team up with Reynold?" Natalie queried as she looked over to Dan.
Dan simply shrugged his shoulders, honestly not knowing what the real answer actually was. He hoped that Brianna wouldn't have given the information to Reynold, but he couldn't be completely sure that the female could be deemed trustworthy.
A few minutes later, Brianna & Reynold strolled into the parlour. Confirming the worries of Dan, Natalie, Reynold , Nelson & Michelle of Reynold finding the answer to the riddle.
"I'd like to congratulate Miss Doan and Mr Jiggon for completing the riddle today..." Giles gave the two a warming smile.
"...and now for the twist!" Giles pulled out another note from his butler tuxedo.
"Dear Mortals, all of you pesky strategists are now probably getting used to having things your way with who gets what information. But today, its my turn to decide..."
Almost as if on cue, Sophie the maid wheeled in a small box, with a little hand size hole in the centre, on a surgical tray with wheels.
"Please, reach in and pull out your fate. The person who you select will be handcuffed to you until you have to state your case. If you pull out your own name? You can select anyone of your choice who hasn't already been selected. Can the winner/winners of the riddle go first? Remember you do have the option of talking to your assigned partner or not."
Brianna reached in first, and pulled out Greg. Brianna rolled he eyes, Greg was literally the one and only person that she didn't want to pick. She soon realised it was also going to be hard to feed the information back to her team if Greg was going to be only centimetres away.
Reynold went next and pulled out Natalie. Natalie was secretly pleased that she got paired with the doctor because she knew that he had the information for this riddle.
Jamie went next and pulled out his own name, thus giving him a free choice between the three others. He chose Michelle, since he wasn't with her during the riddle and wondered if she had found anything.
This automatically left Dan & Nelson to be the last pair.
After a few minutes, each pair was handcuffed and were only given the notice that they were going to be un-handcuffed at 6PM, and that dinner and stating the cases would be at 8PM.
This left over 10 hours for the guests to discuss the riddle and how they thought Talia was murdered.
The exchange between the pairs were very awkward. Some people didn't want to share information with their partners, yet they had to tug them along to share information with their people.
Ultimately, ten hours later when the pairs got un-handcuffed ; some people felt confident, others didn't. Brianna only managed to get her information to Dan & Nelson fully before Greg would tug her over to Reynold & Natalie (with him using his weight to his advantage.)
The sad factor that Nelson & Dan had to realise was that, if they knew that Brianna, Greg, Natalie & Reynold had all the information. They would have to restrict information from Jamie & Michelle to have a chance of being spared. They felt bad for lying to their alliance members but they had to do it.
They had no option.

8 138A Demon Lord's Reincarnation
Selina’s got a pretty active imagination. When doing math, she pretends that she is a great detective solving a heinous crime! Ordinary tasks, like a trip upstairs, turn into a perilous adventure to raid a dragon’s cave! She believes that life should be full of wonder and magic, and tries to force the world to cope with her conviction! But when Selina wakes up to remember her past life as the Demon Lord, she has to face the fact that real life is messy, and not anything like what she imagined. With ancient powers stirring, family problems, and the hectic life of a teenager, Selina will have to discover more about herself if she is going to survive the trials ahead. With the help of her best friend and a fair share of luck, she might just get through this alive. Maybe. (Updates (hopefully) on Sundays) This story started out as a flipped isekai. Instead of a hero being pulled into a medieval world, a Demon Lord is pulled into the modern world. It has since moved a bit beyond that initial premise but it is the foundation of the work. Along the way, I threw in dragons, elves, dwarves, and some vampires (but no werewolves, gotta nip that in the bud) all wrapped up in the political drama of a modern world. The story, however, will mainly focus on the characters and their development and as such, is a bit of a slow burn. It may take a couple of chapters to get into. You have been warned! (PS, please show patience for the author's notes. They're a bit crazy and don't always make the most sense. The author's a bit of a ditz. Please ignore him.)
