My sister was perfect. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. Perfect body. Perfect style. Perfect gift! (Y'all have gifts btw) her gift was making butterflies and they help people move stuff out of small spaces.
My gift was telekinesis, pretty boring as some people say. But it's helpful. My mama and Abeula always compare me to my sister, it hurts. So much. They're always telling people how amazing Carmen is (your sister btw) and they always leave me out of it.
That's exactly what they did at the Madrigals home. We were invited over for dinner, since we had powers like them, they decided to talk to us all about it. I was actually friends with two of the Madrigals!
Mirabel and Camilo.
Camilo being my crush, Mirabel being my best friend.
As i was in my room getting ready, my mama walked in. "Y/n, dress nice like your sister and don't cause any drama. Understand?" She said. I nodded sadly and she pat my cheek gently before walking away. Carmen walked in soon after that. "Y/n, you're friends with that Camilo boy, aren't you?" I raised a brow and nodded in confusion.
"Well, tell him i like him, okay? I would tell him myself but i get all nervous and stuff" her face turned red and butterflies surrounded her stomach before she quickly swat them away. I stared at her for a few minutes before flicking my hand and pushing her out of my room. "Hey!" She yelled before huffing.
I didn't really care right now. I just found out that my beautiful, perfect sister...liked the boy i fell for. And we all know he's going to choose her over me. "Y/N, WE'RE LEAVING" i heard my papa yell and i sighed. "IM COMING" i yelled back and walked out of my room. 'This night will be awful' I thought.

"Don't worry Y/n, i'll stay by you that whole night" i heard a little voice next to me. Clinging on to my arm was my little brother, Nicolas. He got his gift a few weeks ago and it was mind reading. I smiled softly and pulled him closer. "Thanks nick"

We were now sat round the table at the Madrigals. Nicolas did not sit by me but he did make a new friend who was his age. Antonio Madrigal! I wasn't even mad or annoyed that he didn't stick with me, i was happy he made a new friend though. I sat in silence opposite Mirabel and next to Camilo.
My family were telling the others about their gifts and the Madrigals told theirs back. But my name was never mentioned. Soon, i focused on Carmen who was staring at Camilo and blushing and from the corner of my eye, Camilo was smiling and blushing too. It broke my heart.
Not only does my family not like me, but maybe Camilo doesn't either.
I sighed sadly.
"Whats Y/n's gift?" I heard a small voice ask. I turned to see Antonio with a bright smile, hugging his teddy leopard close to his chest. "Y/n's gift is awesome, She can move things with her mind!" Nicolas answered before me. The Madrigal's looked at me in amazement and i could tell it was annoying my family.
Especially Carmen.
"Oh my gosh- show us!!" Isabela yelled in excitement, out of everyone, she seemed to be the most excited. I laughed "okay!" I focused on Antonio's toy and lifted it up before dropping it back down onto the table. The young boys giggled and the rest of the Madrigals gasped.
"Ugh- it's not that great" i heard Carmen whisper. "Well, surrounding everyone with pretty little butterflies then sitting down looking perfect, isn't that great either Carmen" I snapped and she rolled her eyes while my family gave me a look.

I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms. I felt a hand rubbing my shoulder and turned to see Camilo. 'Calm down' he mouthed and i sighed. 'Deep breaths Y/n, deep breaths' i thought before slowly getting up and walking off. "Y/n!" I heard my mama yell. I obviously ignored her.
I sat down on the grass outside, my lip quivering. All my family cared about was Carmen. Carmen this, Carmen that, Carmen can make this, Carmen can do that. Now another family, who is like us..finally showed interest in me and my family hated it. I heard footsteps behind me and they sat down beside me.
I turned to see Camilo. I rested my head on his shoulder and his hand slipped into mine. "All my family cares about is how perfect Carmen is..everyone likes her more than me. I bet you do too, i've seen the way you look at her.." I whispered and i felt Camilo squeeze my hand.
"Y/n...you've always been the best sibling. You're amazing and definitely perfect, Carmen is just a witch in disguise" he joked and i laughed, wiping the new tears that fell. Camilo looked at me and i looked up at him "i've always like you Y/n. Why do you think i made so much effort into trying to know you. You're the best person i've ever met. Much better than Carmen" he whispered the last part in my ear.
I smiled and pulled him closer. I felt his nose on my forehead and it soon ran down until it bumped with my nose, my heart beat sped up and no doubt, a huge smile was on my face. "Can i kiss you, Querida?" He asked quietly, i nodded.
He leaned forward and so did i, our lips soon met. It was a soft kiss. A gentle kiss. A kiss that you'd never want to pull away from but of course, we had too.
When we did, he looked into my eyes before leaning his forehead on mine. "You're the perfect one, Y/n. Not Carmen, you, okay?" He murmured and i cupped his cheek, rubbing my thumb against it while nodding. Man- did I love this boy!

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
