《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 16

Leah looked at her mother, her body dropping to the floor as Kara fought off the men. She couldn't move, she never thought she'd see her mother again. When she heard Kara's cry, her head shot up, and she attacked the person touching her cousin. An arm flew around her, forcing her movements to halt. Her mother moved close to them, waving a glowing green blade in their faces. Kara felt a wave of fatigue hit her, but nothing happened to Astra, "Why doesn't kryptonite hurt you?"

"Kryptonite?" Astra chuckles, "Is that what you call it? It's just like any other dangerous substance." Kara and Leah are pushed away, making them grunt, "Shield yourself in the right materials and it becomes harmless."

"Afraid of a fair fight." Kara weakly says, worried about Leah, who hasn't spoken since Astra arrived.

"I don't want to fight you, Kara. I've been blaming you for things that happened a long..." Astra went to touch her daughter, but Kara snapped down at her.

"Don't touch her!"

"Your mother always said you had the heart of a hero. I need for you to be a hero, Kara. It's time for us to be a family again."

"You're not my family."

"I know you hate me."

"Good." Kara grabs Leah, "We understand each other." She pulls her over the ledge and falls into the earth, underground and flees.

🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆

Leah walked beside Kara, still absolutely silent, "Astra's back and she's up to something. And she has your Kryptonite knife."

"You didn't get that back by any chance?" Kara gave him a look. Henshaw snapped his fingers, "I really like that knife."

"Wait a minute. So the Kryptonite wasn't affecting her? How can that be?"

"Oh, that's more awesome news. She has created a suit that makes her invulnerable to it." Kara groans out, giving Leah another worried glance.

"That changes the game. Why'd she attack you now, after all this time?"

Leah finally looked up, staring over at Kara, but still kept silent. "She's recruiting us for her crazy cause, whatever it is. She said Earth needs both of us. But according to the A.I. of my mother, Astra's idea of helping people on Krypton was blowing up government buildings, so..."

"She wants the two of you off the board." Henshaw states, "This could be the beginning of what we've feared since Fort Rozz first crashed on Earth, a city-wide attack."

"I'll head out now."

"No, wait a minute." Alex stopped Kara, not even having to stop Leah, who just stood, staring blankly at them, "You need at least a few hours of rest to recover."

"Now is not the time to big sister me, okay?"

Henshaw moves to Kara, "You're no good to anyone if you go out there weakened and she kills you. Go home. Sleep. Knock her on her ass another day."

"Will you stop handling me? It's my job to stop her..."

"No, it's not." Alex cuts her off, "It's Hanks. Tomorrow. Come in and we'll spar to make sure you're ready, okay?"

Leah finally spoke up when Hank walked off, "I think I'll go home and sleep."

Kara brought Leah in for a hug, "I know it's hard seeing her again, I'll see you tomorrow."

Leah flies home, walking slowly into her shared apartment, noticing that Winn had fallen asleep on the couch, most likely waiting for her to get home. She gives him a soft smile, walking over and sat next to him, cuddling into his chest, still in her suit. Winn stirs in his sleep, looking down and grinned at her, "Hey, honey."

"Hi, Winn."

Winn rubbed his eyes, "You're still in your suit."

Leah wrapped her arms around him, "I've had a long day."

Winn shifted in his spot, making sure Leah was more comfortable, "Well, I'm right here for you to sleep on." He paused when he heard soft breaths, looking down, seeing she was already fast asleep. "Sweet dreams."

Katie looked over at Winn from inside their little office, "How is Leah?"

"She stayed home." Winn mumbled as his response, "She didn't feel like coming to work... even if she technically does no work."

Kara came in, pushing a cart full of boxes, "Here are Ms. Grant's e-mails from the server, printed out."

"Ugh." Winn walked over taking a box, "So much evil in three hole punch form."

"The Planet just posted another batch of e-mails." James moved next to Winn, showing him the screen, "Oh, man, look what Cat is spending every month on a haircut."

"That's more than my rent..."

"And she used the corporate jet-"

"Which is hers." Kara interrupted, handing a box over to Katie.

"-to fly to burning man last year."

Katie cringed, her whole body shuddering, "Gross. I know what happens there."

"Okay, so James and I will read the e-mails and, Winn, can you and Katie trace the hack? No one knows the computer systems better than you two."

"You speak the truth, Danvers." Katie grins, spinning in her seat to face the computer.

Winn looked between Katie and Kara, "But, uh, really, shouldn't we be, uh, focusing on the whole, 'Psycho-Aunt-Astra's-back-in-town- for-round-two' thing?"

"Is that true?" James questions, Kara goes silent, "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Oh, I know something before you do." Katie slapped her brother's arm, making him glare at her.

"The DEO is handling that." Kara quickly answers, sitting down with a stack of paper, "We're saving Ms. Grant."

"Okay. I'll, uh, do some digging. You're in my way." Katie stood up and looked up at James, "I meant, excuse me." Winn followed Katie out, looking back at James and Kara with a shrug.

Winn caught up with Katie, "What is up with you?"

Katie gave him a shrug, "Nothing."

"We shared a womb." Winn says, "I know when something is up with you. We're twins."

"My friends are in relationships." Katie answers, not looking at her brother, "And I'm not. Like always."

Winn purses his lips, "I'm sure it'll happen someday." Leah walked into the office, "Leah!" Winn jogged over to her, "What are you doing here? I thought you wanted to stay home?"

"I heard what happened to my mom." Leah responds, "I wanted to help."

Katie nodded her head, "Come on, Winn can go do the digging, I'd rather be on the computer."

"Okay." Leah followed close behind Katie as the two entered the office. Katie immediately flew on the computer. Leah went over and smiled at Kara, taking some of the papers.

Ka-El stood by her bed, using the beacon her mother had given to her and Kara. "Ka-El."

"Mom." Ka got up from her seat, running into her mother's arms, "You got my message."

"I would never lose track of my spy beacon." Her mother smiled down at her, connecting the beacons together.

"Where have you been? Aunt Alura said you and father were never coming back. Are you in trouble?"

"We are, my sweet daughter."

"Why? Tell me. No one else will tell me."

"Our core is unstable. It has been for a long time because of how we've harnessed it for power. We became greedy. And now the oceans have changed, and the weather. I'm trying to get people to stop and see what they're doing, and in doing so, I've had to do some difficult things."

"Is that why Aunt Alura would not allow me to mention you or father?"

"I would do anything to save us. To save you, Ka. But it isn't safe here for me anymore. I have to go away again. But I didn't wanna leave without saying goodbye."

Ka wrapped her small arms back around her mother, not wanting to release her, "Please don't go."

"I couldn't love a daughter more and am so glad that Rao had granted me a child of my own." Astura pulled away from her daughter when she saw her sister standing in the doorway.

"Ka-El, leave us."

Ka turned to her mom, "Mother, please don't leave."

Astura squatted down to her daughter's level with a smile, "I will not leave you, my sweet daughter. Listen to your Aunt."

"Leah. Are you okay?"

Leah flinched, coming back to reality, "Fine. Any luck tracing the hack?"

"Uh, not yet. I helped build Catco's firewalls, and so far, there's no signs of any malware or overrides, nothing is out of place." Katie answers, her eyes never leaving the screen.

"Okay, and what about Ms. Grant's e-mails?" Kara asks James.

"All over the map."

Leah sighs, "How bad is it?"

"I mean, I'm compiling a master list but it's always this strange, weird stuff like the fact that Cat invested in Jekyll and Hyde Musical. Has she sent in an audition tape to be on Undercover Boss? And there are 317 e-mails referring to Lois Lane as a-"

Leah held up her hand, "I don't want to hear it. I've met Lois she is a great person and I'm happy for her and Clark."

Kara took the papers, "I'll go talk to Ms. Grant, but keep going through everything."

"Can we have a lunch break at least?" Katie questions, spinning around in her chair, "I'm starving."

"Fine." Kara walked out of the room.

🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆

"It was Dirk Armstrong, chairman of the board. He hired someone to hack Ms. Grant."

Katie had a mouth full of food as she looked up at her, "How do you know that?"

"I overheard him after the board meeting, talking about setting up Ms. Grant for a fall."

"You overheard him?" James asks.

"Yes with... with my alien ears."

Winn looked between them, "Okay, um, if the hack was ordered by someone inside Catco, that's gonna be a lot harder to trace."

"So we have to find proof."

James moves his hand on the table, "We should talk to Catco's lawyers if you really suspect Armstrong."

"No, we can't trust them, they could be working with Armstrong. But we do know someone who has a legal background who might be able to help us." Kara swung on her heels, "Don't we, James?"

Katie groaned, "Oh jeez."

*~*

Lucy looked at the group surrounding her, "And this is a completely hypothetical situation?"

Katie nodded, picking up her soda, "Right, because, you know, if we were actually planning on going after the chairman of the board of the company that we all work at, that would just be insanity. Full-blown, career-ending insanity."

"Can we get a warrant to search Mr. Armstrong's office?" Leah asks, messing with her glasses.

Lucy pursed her lips, "You need something like a paper trail in which Armstrong directly references conspiring against Cat."

"Now, so let's say we get that proof. Then can we stop him? Can we get him fired?"

"If you can prove Armstrong is colluding against Cat, his CEO, then we're talking corporate wrongdoing." Lucy explains to them, "Forget fired, you could get him arrested."

"Thank you, Lucy."

"But go after Armstrong without hard evidence, and this is my expert legal advice, you'd be making things a lot worse for your boss."

"An unknown woman is hovering over Catco Plaza, with, it seems, the same powers as Supergirl and Captain Marvel. Does she mean us harm? Should we be concerned?"

Katie looked over at Kara and Leah, suddenly holding her phone up, "Uh, you two are needed by Miss Grant back at the office."

"Yeah."

"Don't worry about us." James waves at them, "We'll keep working on this."
