《Killer Bay》Deadly Legacy

"Hello, Adalet! I feel like I'm on a roll again solving murders with you! Once I get going, I just can't stop!" Amy beamed brightly, "what's next on the agenda, Adalet?"

"I think we should go visit another film set," Adalet answers, "with all these murders, there might be a pattern we haven't spotted yet..."

"I've got an idea! There's a new film being made called "Legacy" that's all about gladiators! The movie's being directed by Margaret Hatchman. She's a real role model as the leading female director in an industry filled with men," she rambled, "people doubt whether she can pull off such a big-budget film that's an epic, which is usually geared towards men, but I admire her courage!"

"Sounds like a great place to start!" she agrees with a smile.

She saluted, "if you have no objections, let's head over to the gladiator set! Maybe we can even be extras in a gladiator scene!"

"Wow, Adalet! It's like we were transported back in time to ancient Rome! The set looks so real!" Amy remarks as they walk around the Colosseum set, "I've got this feeling that a gladiator battle could break out at any moment! With all these realistic weapons, chariots, even a body-"

"Wait, what?" Adalet cut her off, freezing in place.

She blinked as she realized what she had said and saw, "a body? Oh not again... Please tell me it's part of the set! Well, you know what to do, Adalet! Let's get our investigating gear on and check!"

The two approached the body and quickly realized that it was not a prop, but was a real human being who had once been living and breathing. Around her body, they noticed an overflowing box of movie props, a stone tablet spatter with fresh blood, and a painting of a man in a Roman emperor-style robe, but it was too modern of a painting to have not been made in this century.

"Oh no! That body I thought was a prop... That's the body of Margaret Hatchman, the female director I was telling you about! How awful!" Amy gasped, "she's been tied down with a shackle, meaning this wasn't her own doing... It's another murder, Adalet!"

"Looks like we have a new case..." Adalet says as she looks over the body.

"And the state she's in!" she shivered, "the blood on her head and the stomach wounds... She must have been viciously attacked!"

"And Roxie should be able to tell us exactly how she died!" she replied, pulling out her phone.

"What else did you find? This props box looks like a good place to hide something, doesn't it, Adalet? Let's dig in!" she said while examining the clues they had collected, "and that guy in the Roman painting looks familiar to me... Maybe he's an actor working on the movie?"

"If he is, then matching his face in our database will tell us who he is!" Adalet added.

"And look! That stone tablet has our victim's name carved in it! And blood splatter? This can't just be a movie prop," Amy reasoned, "the rest of the text is faded... But if you retrieve it, I bet it'll reveal key information about this case! This day is off to an epic start, Adalet! But knowing your fighter spirit, we'll solve this murder in no time! Let's go!"

Adalet picked up the stone tablet first. Besides Margaret's name along the top, it was possible to tell that there was more written on the tablet, but someone had stretched it out to make it illegible. Adalet dusted along the scratched writing, and it sunk into the deeper engravings. She softly blew off all of the extra powder, and the words were now perfectly visible.

"Tuo legato non habebis prosperum"..." Adalet reads, "well clearly not English! I'm thinking Latin, but I don't know what it translates to..."

Amy hums in thought, "considering the blood splatter and the victim's name... Maybe Russell can help us, Adalet?"

"Great idea, Amy!" she praised.

"Okay cool," she beams while taking the tablet, "let's send it to him!"

Next on the list of clues was the box filled with props. Adalet and Hunter drug through the assortment of fake swords, daggers, roman sandals, and shields until they found something a little too modern to be in the Roman Empire. A small pink appointment card to a local nail salon.

"What'd you find amongst all those gladiator props, Adalet? A card for a nail salon?" Amy frowns as she examines it "that's unexpected!"

"But look at the same on it, Amy!" Adalet says as she pointed to the name written in the small white box.

"You're right! It has our victim's name, Margaret Hatchman, and an appointment time for this morning! That means Margaret was at the nail salon before coming to the movie set!" she exclaimed, "what do you say to a trip to the salon, Adalet? I hope we're not just going for you to get your nails done, though!"

She laughed, "no, not a big fan of nail polish... Now for this painting, this guy has to be an actor in the movie!"

"I agree, Adalet," she says, "let's have a look at our database to find out who he is!"

Adalet quickly compared the features of the man from the painting, to familiar ones she found in the database of movie actors. After a few minutes, she had a name to the face for the actor from the painting.

"Way to match the face from the fake Roman painting you found on the crime scene, Adalet!" Amy cheered, "I knew he looked familiar! It's actor Tobias Frankenberger! Duncan and I watched his films when we were kids... Oh, Duncan..."

"You OK?" Adalet asks in concern.

She nodded before saluting, "anyway, this painting means Tobias played in our victim's film! Let's go chat with him!"

Once back-up had arrived to take over the scene, Adalet and Amy searched the studio for Tobias Frankenberger. After searching for a little while, they found him a few sets away from the crime scene.

"Mr. Frankenberger, it's such an honour to meet you... I grew up watching your films!" Amy tells him excitedly.

"Oh Golly, isn't that sweet! Go on, child, list all your favourite scenes I was in!" Tobias insists.

She smiles nervously, "actually, Capt. Adalet and I are here about Margaret Hatchman's murder. She directed the movie you're starring in."

"Oh, Margaret! What a tragedy! The fall of a great woman and great director. I had such high respect for her!" he boasted, "I've been an actor many years, with several ups, a handful of downs. But I'm not the young dapper fellow I used to be and knew that this was my last big chance. I have to end my acting career with a bang! And Margaret promised me that this film would be an award winner for sure!"

They thanked Tobias for the information, then left the film studio to go investigate the nail salon. Once there they searched for evidence from their victim's visit that could tell them more about her murder. They managed to find a locked cellphone on one of the small glass end tables, and a faded appointment book that had fallen underneath one of the worker's tables.

"Even when going from gladiator sets to salons, your searching skills are top-notch, Adalet! Will you reveal the details on that faded appointment book you found?" Amy inquires.

"Hopefully," Adalet responds, "and that cell phone's got our victim's photo in the background..."

"That's going to be useful!" she winked, "I trust you'll unlock it quickly!"

Adalet picked up the victim's phone first and did quick work of cracking the passcode and unlocking it.

"Look at those fast fingers go, Adalet!" Amy chuckled, "you unlocked the victim's cell phone so quickly! What next, off to the lab?"

"You read my mind!" Adalet smirked, handing over the device.

"Okay!"

Lastly, there was the faded appointment book to deal with. Adalet dusted the last page and recovered the missing entry that had been made for earlier today.

"This appointment book matches the appointment card from the crime scene! There's our victim's name, Margaret..." Adalet pointed to the name under the "CLIENT" heading, "... and the name of the nail technician she was with! Let's go talk to this Tamra Johnson!"

Luckily they didn't have to go much further than the employee break room of the nail salon. They introduced themselves to Tamra and quickly informed her of their investigation before getting to the questioning.

"Ms. Tamra Johnson, we're here about your client, Margaret Hatchman. She was found murdered just after her appointment with you," Amy explained.

"You mean that crazy blond lady who thought the world revolved around her finger? She was always raving about how fancy pants she was, which I'm used to hearing in Ivywood. But then she got personal and talked smack about my profession! She said she'd leave her mark on the world but me, I wouldn't even leave a footprint!" Tamra ranted with a deep sigh, "I tried to stay nice, and even offered her a movie idea I had. It's about a nail technician who's also a spy! But all she did was laugh! She thinks she can dismiss me like that? How I wanted to throw a punch or two her way! But I'm a true professional, unlike her. I'm not surprised she's dead... She was an enemy-making machine!"

"Murders and tigers and bears, oh my!" Roxie exclaimed dramatically as Adalet and Amy walked into the morgue.

"I don't think that's how the movie quote goes, Roxie. You're missing the lion," Amy corrected.

"Actually, Amy, it's you and Adalet who are missing the lion, because you'll need to find one to solve this murder," she laughed, "the wounds on the victim came from an animal attack, and by the tooth marks and feline hairs I found, it had to be a lion!"

"What? The killer's a lion?! How are we supposed to arrest an animal, Adalet?" Amy asked.

"I think the lion might be the murder weapon, Amy," Adalet answered, "not the murder orchestrator."

"There was certainly still human foul play involved. The victim was tied down with shackles, so someone left her there to be eaten. Also, she was clearly knocked out by some hard object before being locked down. Good luck finding it, Adalet," Roxie added, "I did find distinct purple stains around the shackles. The smell clued me in on what it was, and a lab sample confirmed it... The victim was drenched in wine! Sounds like my Friday night, but since I found no traces of alcohol in her bloodstream, the wine must have belonged to the killer!"

"Our killer is a wino? Then let's make a toast... to having them put behind bars!" Amy laughed at her joke.

They thanked Roxie for her work before heading over to Russell's office.

"Hi, Adalet! And Amy, you're looking well. I haven't properly introduced Ivywood to you since you've been back... But I'd love to, later on," Russell smiles.

Amy flushed slightly, "it feels great working alongside Adalet again! And you, of course..."

"Anyway, Adalet, the message on this tablet must've been carved by a chisel, a carving tool used in the Roman times," he rambles chewing on his glasses, "the message reads "Tuo legato non habebis prosperum." It's Latin for "Your legacy will not prosper." by the nature of this message, plus the blood, no doubt the killer wrote it!"

"Your legacy will not prosper"..." Adalet hums, "legacy! That's the name of Margaret's film! Which means the killer must have wanted her film to fail!"

"Not necessarily..." Russell argued, "the killer could have been threatening Margaret's personal legacy, such as her work, her family, or her identity."

"Well no matter which one it is, from that message, we can deduce that the killer knows Latin!" she replies, "thanks, Russell!"

Next, they moved on to Hannah's lab.

"So you're getting back into the swing of things, Amy? Just don't let her do all the work, Adalet!" Hannah teased.

"Don't worry. Adalet's got it covered... as usual," Amy chuckled.

"So I dug around through your victim's phone. She must have been a busy lady, her messages are endless! Most were work-related, but I found some angry messages sent by her husband, Phillip Hatchman," she informs them, "he sent one this morning saying "Enough gladiators! Come home and be a mom!" The "gladiators" must refer to Margaret's work on set."

Adalet hummed, "well "come home and be a mom" means she wasn't a very present mother... It must've been hard balancing both career and family."

"Good intuition, Adalet," Amy agreed, "a rocky relationship can lead to impulsive acts... Let's go chat with Phillip!"

Adalet and Amy got the address for the victim's home and hurried over there to break the bad news to her husband.

"So my wife died on her own movie set?" Phillip sniffled while hugging his son closer, "how ironic... She lived and died exactly where she wanted."

"I take it from your nonchalant tone and the angry messages that you two weren't on good terms lately? Problems at home?" Amy guessed.

"Problems at home?" He scoffed, "That was the problem... she was never home!"

"I'm sure she was really busy working. Directing is no easy task, but she sure led an exciting life!" she argued.

"Well, she sure didn't find her home life exciting. She spent all her days on set! I had to quit my job to raise our kid all on my own! I tried so hard to show her that family comes first, that family legacy was just as important as work," he sighed, "but she didn't seem interested in me anymore... How could I compete with the excitement of gladiator fights when I'm just a man with a baby? Maybe in the end her death is a good thing... This way her son won't grow up knowing his mother never cared!"

"What a day, Adalet! Margaret Hatchman, a director I looked up to, was murdered on the very set where she was making her epic film "Legacy." Amy began to summarize, "we've spoken to her husband, who seemed suspiciously nonchalant about his wife's death. And we got to talk to the actor Tobias Frankenberger, who was really gunning for this film to succeed!"

"Adalet! You better come quick!" Russell yells, running into the room, "Amy, if I were you I'd stay back."

"What is it, Russell?" Adalet asked standing up from her desk.

"There's a lion running wild in the movie studio's symphony room!" he exclaimed while flailing his arms around.

Amy gasped in shock, "a lion! Our victim was killed by a lion! This can't be a coincidence! ... I'll be right back, Adalet!"

Adalet and Russell watch in confused silence as Amy rushes out of the office without another word.

"Where'd Amy go, Adalet? And does this mean this lion might be your murder weapon?!" Russell inquired.

"It's possible," Adalet confirmed, "but I can't say for sure."

"Interesting! How the heck will you catch it?!" he wondered.

"Fear not, Adalet! I won't leave you to catch this lion on your own!" Amy declared as she waddled into the room in heavy protective equipment.

"Amy is that you?! Where'd you get that protection gear?" Russell asked in amazement.

She winked, "as a White Peaks native, you never know when a surprise will jump out at you. Better safe than sorry! Plus, facing my fears is the only way to be the best cop I can be!"

"Wow... I must say, I'm impressed..." he confessed, "not too shabby, Amy."

"Thanks, Russell. Ready to catch this lion, Adalet?" she asks, "I'll be by your side... if worse comes to worst just run, okay? Let's go to the symphony room!"

"Easy boy... that's a good boy.." Adalet cooed grasping the slab of raw steak tighter, slowly walking backwards towards the cage, "come on! If you want a snack, you need to follow me..."

The captain felt her heels hit the lip of the large cage that they had rolled into the symphony room and stepped up to walk into the cage. Once she could touch the bars at the back of the cage with her free hand, she tossed the lion the meat she had been luring him with and slipped out of the cage through the gap in-between the bars. With the lion now occupied with chowing down on the steak, Amy quickly closed and locked up the cage tightly.

"Adalet, we did it! We got the lion into the cage!" Amy celebrated, "I hope it didn't bite any of your fingers! Best to send it to Yann, considering this might be our murder weapon!"

Adalet laughed, "oh I bet he'll be thrilled! This paper we found says "Legacy." so it must be linked to Margaret's film!"

"Think you can reveal more on it?" she asked and got a nod in return, "and yikes! There's blood on that gladiator shield you picked up! It must be from the movie set! Think it's connected to the victim?"

"It won't surprise me!" she answered, "since Roxie said our victim was bashed in the head with something... The killer could have used this shield to hit Margaret!"

"Good thinking! The killer might have left evidence on the shield's handle! Let's collect a sample of it!"

Adalet first examined the leather handle of the shield while Amy left to put her protective gear in the car. There was a trace amount of a pink substance on the leather that clearly didn't belong on it. She swabbed off a sample to send to the lab and sealed the sample just as her partner returned.

"Excellent work collecting that pink substance off the shield handle, Adalet! Let's get it to Yann!" Amy says, taking the sample.

Adalet picked up the music score next. She dusted along the faded areas of the paper and watched as the missing markings were recovered. They now had the recovered score and the full name of the woman who had composed it for the victim's movie.

"Nice work, Adalet! You revealed that the paper is sheet music! It says "Score for Legacy"... Must be the music for Margaret's film!" Amy guessed, "the music was composed by someone named Hannah Simmer. Adalet, I'll tag along to chat with her!"

Once animal control had arrived to safely transport the lion to Yann's lab, Adalet and Amy began searching the building for Hannah Simmer. They eventually found the conductor in another practice room on the other side of the building. After a round of quick introductions and an explanation, they got to work questioning the older woman.

"Margaret's dead? That's a terrible shame! It was such an amazing opportunity working with her!" Hannah tells them with clear shock, "I know how Margaret felt, being a leading woman amongst men... I, too, have made a name for myself as the leading female composer in the music landscape. But the classical music world is quite small, so I figured it was time to take on a bigger challenge, something more... epic. Like films!"

"And so you agreed to compose the score for Margaret's film?" Adalet questioned.

"I wanted my first project to be a film that would last the ages, something glorious, where the story in itself is a melody! That's why I chose to work with Margaret... I've always liked Roman culture, I've even learned some Latin to really immerse myself in it!" she adds, "too bad we never finished this project together... it truly would have been a legacy we both could share together! Let's raise a glass of wine to the late Margaret Hatchman... May she be remembered as the greatest director of our time!"

"I can't believe you brought me a lion, Adalet!" Yann exclaimed as the lion continued sleeping inside their cage near the back of the lab.

"I hope we didn't put you in harm's way, Yann," Amy says, biting her lips nervously.
