"Hello, Adalet. Today is Amy's official return from her leave!" Andrea announces, placing her coffee mug down onto her desk, "she worked beautifully during Frank's latest stunt, but I don't know how she'll fare in the long run. So I thought you could start by patrolling a movie set with her! With the recent murders, some of the studios have asked for our help to improve security."
"Which set would you like us to patrol?" Adalet inquired.
"Amy's waiting for you at Studio 51," she answered, "where they're filming a new science fiction movie, "Warzone Pacific"!"
"Hello, Adalet. How are you doing?" Amy inquired, "I'm psyched to be officially back, you'll see I'm a better cop than ever before!"
Adalet smiles, "great to have you back in action, Amy! I can't wait to be impressed!"
"After what happened with Duncan... I realized I needed to stop looking up to him and become a good cop by my own standards!" she says confidently, "I'm so happy to be working with you again, Adalet! What is our mission today?"
"Andrea wanted us to check out the security for "Warzone Pacific", with all the murders people are getting concerned," she replied.
"Oh, we have to ensure the security on the set of a movie called "Warzone Pacific"? Great! I heard it was Rex Logan's new movie!" she added as she scribbled down some notes on her notepad.
"Who's Rex Logan?" Adalet asks as they begin walking towards studio 51.
"He's a famous science-fiction actor and a vocal Utopian! Maybe we'll get to meet him!" Amy said with excitement.
"But let's not forget why we're here."
"You're right, we're here to work! Let's go patrol the movie set!"
Once they managed to find the right movie set, Adalet and Amy let themselves inside. They began patrolling the room when they came upon a frightful sight. Resting against the side of a crashed fake UFO was a dead man who was missing almost all of his torso, the only thing left of it was his spine! Looking around the body, they also found an empty bottle of acid and a clapboard.
"Oh my God," Amy gasped as tears sprang into her eyes, "this body... It's Rex Logan, the actor I told you about! It's impossible, it's like death is following me everywhere I go!"
"Are you alright, Amy?" Adalet asked in concern.
"Sorry Adalet," she apologizes, "I'm still fragile after what happened with Duncan. I may react a bit differently from usual. So what do you think happened to this poor man?"
"Well," she kneeled in front of the body, "Rex's flesh seems to have been eaten away by some kind of acid! Look, it's still bubbling and acidifying! And there's no way such an injury like this could have happened by accident, this man was murdered with acid! Let's get the body to Roxie."
"And you found an acid bottle near the body? This must be our murder weapon!" she reasons, "we're off to a good start, Adalet. But if you want to take a sample from this bottle of acid, please make sure you don't burn off your fingers! And you also found a clapperboard?"
"There's a good chance it belongs to the director of this movie," she explained.
"But the info is faded... Let's get to work, Adalet!"
Adalet slapped on a pair of gloves before picking up the empty bottle of acid. There appeared to still be a trace amount of the acid on the neck of the bottle, so she decided to collect a sample of it for Yann to analyze.
"Great," Amy cheered as Adalet sealed up the sample, "you managed to collect some of the acid off our murder weapon without burning your fingers, Adalet! Now let's send it to Yann! Who knows what he might be able to find in it!"
Adalet removed her gloves and then picked up the clapper board. She dusted the bottom half of the board and recovered the information about the movie title and its director's name.
"Great job recovering the info from the clapperboard you found on the crime scene, Adalet!" Amy praises, "and look, this clapperboard was used for our victim's movie, "Warzone Pacific"! And the director's name is Ted Esquire..."
"Directors should know everything that happens on their film set," Adalet muses, "so let's talk to him!"
After some back and Roxie arrive to take over the scene and body, Adalet and Amy set out to track down the director. After asking around for a bit, they managed to find Ted Esquire in one of the other set studios for Warzone Pacific. After making quick introductions and informing the man of what had happened, the women got down to business.
"Mr. Esquire, what can you tell us about Rex Logan's death?" Adalet inquired as Amy began writing down notes, "you're the director of the movie he was appearing in, so you're the man in charge!"
"Yes, I'm the director, so you'd think I'd be in charge and all, but I'm just a pawn here!" Ted answers, "Warzone Pacific" is my first job in Ivywood, I had to let the producers decide everything to get it! They chose the story, the cast and crew themselves!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Esquire, but this isn't telling us anything about Rex Logan's murder!" Amy interrupted.
He sighed, "I don't know anything about that, the last time I saw Rex he was in the costume workshop, where he was getting his makeup ready!"
"He must have gone there before he was murdered," Adalet deduced, "we should go to this workshop, if the victim was there it's worth checking out!"
After getting the studio number and some directions from Ted, Adalet and Amy made their way to it. After searching for a few minutes, they came up with a few clues that could be of use to their investigation.
"So this is what they call a props room, where they create the accessories needed for the movie... There are so many things, weapons, suits of armour, everything! Did you find something related to the investigation?" Amy inquired.
"This box of movie accessories," Adalet gestured to the box beside her, "and a receipt for a bottle of acid!"
"You want to dive into this box of movie accessories? Alright, let's do it!" she says, "and a receipt for a bottle of acid! We need to figure out who bought this!"
"There's a delivery number," she remarks, "but it's almost illegible..."
"Adalet, we're going to need your deciphering skills if we want to get to the bottom of this!"
Adalet examined the receipt for the bottle of acid first. The delivery number must have gotten wet during transport, but it wasn't impossible to read. After a few minutes of squinting at the smudge code, she had managed to make out the sequence of letters and numbers.
"Great job deciphering the delivery number on the acid receipt, Adalet!" Amy says while taking the paper, "let's send it to Hannah, she'll trace the person who bought it!"
Next was the box of movie props. Adalet dug through the large pile of sci-fi-themed items, looking for something out of place. She came across a poster for the movie in the box and unlike the other items, it was the only one of its kind.

"Great job finding this poster among all of these movie set accessories, Adalet! It looks like a poster for the movie our victim was working on, "Warzone Pacific!" And that's Rex Logan!" Amy points to the man on the poster, "there's another actor on the poster, but his name has been torn off..."
"We should look for a match in Studio 51's employee files," Adalet suggested, powering on her tablet.
It wasn't too hard to find out who the other man on the poster was. His make-up made him unique, and after just a matter of seconds, they had a name for the mystery man.
"So the other actor on the poster for Rex Logan's movie is Daniel Lambert! Unfortunately, that name doesn't ring a bell..." Amy adds.
"But if he was Rex's co-star, he might know more about what happened on the set!" Adalet reasoned, "let's talk to Daniel!"
They tracked down Daniel's trailer in the sea of white mobile homes scattered around the film studio. After knocking on the door, it was quickly opened by an alien-looking man identical to the one beside Rex on the movie poster.
"Wow! That's some impressive makeup! Is it for your role in "Warzone Pacific"?" Amy asked.
"Yes, it is!" Daniel beamed, "I was co-starring in "Warzone Pacific" with Rex Logan! A less important role than him, but still. I suppose you're investigating Rex's death? You have to find his killer as quickly as possible, Capt. Adalet, the movie must continue!"
"A man died, Mr. Lambert," Adalet deadpanned, "that's more important than any movie!"
"Not for me! This movie was supposed to start a franchise, with a new movie released every year! It was an incredible chance at a regular income! And maybe with so many movies under my belt, I would have finally been able to get a leading role!" he says hopefully, "I've only ever been the sidekick, never the main star... And I'm not getting any younger... Listen, I'm very sad about what happened to Rex. But he's dead now, and the rest of us have to make ends meet. This movie has to be finished, or the cast and crew won't get paid!"
"Hey, Amy, welcome back! Even if I'm sure you would have preferred to skip the whole dead person deal for a while..." Roxie ads.
"It's my job Roxie, stop treating me like a child! Do you have any relevant information for us?" Amy asked, cutting straight to the chase.
She blinked in surprise, "wow... OK, Amy, just... Sorry. So Rex Logan's body melted because of the acid thrown on him, as Adalet correctly deduced. But I've had a look at the crime scene photos, and there's no way your victim died in such an unnatural position!"
"It did look uncomfortable," Adalet remarked.
"Which means your victim was staged post-mortem by his killer! So I took a closer look at your victim's clothing, and I found traces of talcum powder on the elbows and knees," Roxie picked up a small scrap of fabric with a white stain on it, "exactly the places the killer had to touch to reposition him! Talcum powder is used for many things, actors use it to keep their makeup in place. And I can affirm that your killer uses talcum powder as well! Go get them, Adalet!"
They thanked Roxie for the information, then headed across the station to Yann's lab.
"Sorry it took so long, Adalet, but finding anything in that acid sample was no easy feat, believe me!" Yann says, but he had a grin on his face, "however, I finally managed to isolate some faint traces of DNA the acid hadn't gotten to yet!"
"DNA? That means you've got a good lead on Rex Logan's murder?" Amy guessed.
"I think I do! Of course, it was more like a hint of DNA, not like a full usable strand. Still, this DNA does NOT match your victim's!" he explains.
"Which means that this is our killer's DNA, right?" Adalet asked.
Yann crosses his arms, "you're indeed right. And while the DNA is not exploitable, it does tell you one important thing, Adalet: some acid got onto your killer's skin!"
"So Rex's killer will have burn marks on their skin! Ha," Amy laughed, "it's like the heinousness of the crime is now visible on their flesh!"
Lastly, they needed to check in with Hannah about the delivery number they had sent her earlier that day.
"Hey Amy, how are you doing? Back to your happy-go-lucky self?" Hannah inquired.
"A man is dead, Hannah, who cares about how I feel! Did you find out who purchased the acid that was used to kill Rex Logan?" Amy demands.
She winced, "alright, Amy, no need to be rude! Soon you'll be wearing Hawaiian shirts and drinking cheap booze... But yeah, I managed to feed this delivery number into the servers of the company, and I got you a name! The acid was bought by Lucy Armstrong, who is a props woman on "Warzone Pacific"! She's the one who made all the accessories!"
"So Lucy bought the murder weapon... but did she commit the murder?" Adalet wondered, "Amy, let's go talk to her!"
Adalet and Amy tracked down Lucy Armstrong to one of the film set's prop studios. They headed over to her workplace and found the red-haired woman painting some blue astronaut gloves.
"Lucy Armstrong?" Adalet inquired, "Rex Logan has been killed with acid on the set of the movie you're working on..."
"Yeah, so? What's it to do with me?" Lucy asks, pausing her painting.
"Well, Capt. Adalet has proof you purchased that acid! That's an unfortunate coincidence, don't you think?" Amy says pulling out her notepad.
"OK, first of all, I need this acid to create all of the accessories used in the movie! I order plenty of hazardous products all the time, that's not a crime!" Lucy explained, "and Rex may have been a big star outside of my workshop, but for me, he was just a living mannequin for my costumes, nothing more! That's my job, I make props! Props are what the actors use while performing, in my case I specialize in armours and weapons, perfectly harmless stuff."
"No one would call flesh-eating acid "harmless stuff", Lucy! You had the easiest access to that acid, what tells Capt. Adalet you didn't kill Rex?" she argued.
"Why would I kill someone using a method that would automatically make me suspicious?" she glares, "I'm not that stupid, if I wanted to kill Rex, I would have used another weapon!"
"Ok, I have to focus, this is the important part, this is the recap, you're counting on me for this, Adalet!" Amy said as she pulled out the notes she had accumulated, "we found the actor Rex Logan dead on the set of his latest film, his body half-melted by acid! His killer didn't leave him a chance! We met with Lucy Armstrong, who had access to the murder weapon for her job... Kind of convenient, don't you think Adalet?"
"Convenient yes, a conviction no," Adalet responds.
"And we also met with Daniel Lambert, Rex's co-star who seems more concerned with the movie than with a killer on the loose!" she continued, "well, this... went better than I expected! Maybe I can do this, maybe I can do my job without a problem..."
"Adalet! I need to talk to you, I found something!" Russell yells as he comes sprinting into the office.
"Russell?! What is it, what is happening?" Adalet asks in concern.
"Adalet, Amy, I've got big news! I know where your killer is gonna be in the next few hours!" he announced.
"You mean you know where the person who killed Rex Logan is going to go next?!" Amy gasped.
"Yes! The killer will be at a fan gathering, a retrospective of Rex Logan's movies!" Russell answered.
She cocked her head slightly, "but how can you be so sure of that, Russell?"
"That's the only course of action that would fit the killer's profile! A murder with something as violent as acid implies a personal grudge!" he rambled, "the killer will want to witness people's reactions to the death. And this fan gathering for Rex Logan is being held at the local drive-in!"
"A drive-in? You mean, the place where I go with my car to order burgers?" she asks, even more confused.
He chuckled, "no, Amy, I mean a drive-in movie theatre! You know, an outside theatre where you can park your car and watch a movie from the driver's seat? They were pretty popular in the fifties! Hurry up, Adalet, the trail won't stay hot forever! You have to go to the drive-in!"
"We're on our way now, thanks, Russell!" Adalet calls over her shoulder as Amy and she hurried out of the station.
They drove out to the drive-in theatre as fast as they could before anyone else had the chance to contaminate the scene. They searched around the large area and eventually came up with some clues. Adalet found some metal scraps on the backrest of a convertible in the row furthest from the screen and Hunter seemed interested in a wooden box full of items sitting in an empty parking space.
"A drive-in movie theatre, it's a first for me! Did you find anything that could have been left by the killer, Adalet?" Amy inquires.
"Some scraps of metal, and this box," Adalet answered.
"Um... Why are you giving me a pile of rubble? You think it's a clue? Alright," she shrugs, "let's put it back together! You found a crate of merchandising, Hunter? It's weird, the crate bears the Utopian symbol!"
"But we know that Rex Logan was a Utopian," the captain pointed out, "so maybe the cult decided to use the retrospective to do some propaganda!"
She grins, "let's have a look in that crate!"
Adalet dug through the box of Utopian propaganda first. Hats, shirts, mugs, key chains, and books made up the box, but there was a flyer near the bottom that seemed interesting. It had their victim's picture on it, and it looked to be promoting the retrospective.
"You found a flyer for the Rex Logan retrospective in that crate of Utopian objects, Adalet, great job!" Amy cheered, "the name of the person in charge of this retrospective of Rex Logan is... "Sister Alpaga"? What a weird name!"
"It could be some kind of nickname," Adalet suggested.
"You're right," she agreed "that seems like the most sensible explanation! Let's send this flyer to Hannah so she can find who's hiding behind that name!"
After placing the flyer in her case, Adalet grabbed her quick-drying glue and picked up the pieces of broken metal. Once she figured out what piece went where she glued them all together to form a small statue that looked strangely familiar.
"Great job restoring that statuette you found at the drive-in, Adalet! What an interesting posture..." Amy remarks.
Adalet blinks, "wait a minute, it's the pose Rex Logan was put in when he died!"
"You're right!" she gasped, "the two must be linked! And it has a Utopian symbol on it! We have to send it to Russell, maybe this statue has a hidden meaning!"
"Did you have a good time at the Rex Logan retrospective, Adalet? Did you become a fan of his movies?" Hannah inquired.
Adalet snorted, "maybe if we had time to watch one of his moves, but justice never sleeps!"
"Just kidding, I know you don't have time for anything but justice! I found an email address related to the nickname on the flyer and I managed to hack into it!" she informed them, "turns out "Sister Alpaga" is none other than Holly Hopper, the gossip columnist!"
"Holly Hopper? The gossip columnist who wanted to write about me when that reality TV star got murdered?" Amy recalls.
"And she has a flair for trouble," Adalet added, "whenever there's a murder, she's not far away! We have to talk to her!"
But before that, Adalet and Amy went to Russell's office to ask him about the artifact they had sent to him.
"Hello again, Adalet! Thank you so much for the Utopian artifact, you know how much I love them..." Russell says, voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Adalet needs you, Russell," Amy responded with a slight glare, "it's more important than your feelings about the Utopians! Now, can you tell us more about the statue and its link to the murder?"

Magic has come to earth and Jack and his brother Bryan have to traverse a postapocolyptic U.S.A. Any input helps a ton! I do take suggestions seriously. I have 30+ chapters written ahead of time but they still need some polishing and editing to post each one. Please point out any errors you find in the comments! I read every one and reply to most! Release schedule is not set in stone right now as my schedule is very hectic. I promise I will not drop this and try to post at least every other day. Every 3 Days max. Thanks again for taking the time to read my story! NOTE: THERE WILL BE COMBAT, BRUTALITY, MINOR GORE AND MINOR LANGUAGE. Also minor romantic situations. If it gets out of hand I'll add the tags for it. 11/30/17 I just updated some middle chapters. There were some bad spelling and grammar mistakes. In my defense I posted those chapters on my honeymoon lol. It should flow better now. I know the prologue is still troublesome but give it a shot beyond that. It gets much better. 12/5/17 I have been updating some of the earlier chapters. Nothing canon changing but it’s fleshed out a bit and flows better. Also fixed some glaring mistakes.

The story of a fire elemental's life in a world dominated by mages. He will have to learn how to manage betrayals, treachery, and maybe even love as he goes on adventures to find a meaning to it all. From dark, humble beginnings he will rise... or fall, devastating amounts in his journey across the world. Hello, Author here! I am, unfortunately, rather terrible at coming up with descriptions that seem to have the right amount of decorum and yet actually serve their function of adequately describing the story, so here's the coursenotes. - The story follows a fire elemental. (As you can tell from that, it is heavily besed on fantasy with mages and the like. Technology will not feature prominently) -As mentioned in the tags, this will have game-like aspects. (E.G. levels, stats. I will be trying to put my own twist on this notion however, so bear with me if the premise intrests you but you despise LitRpg) -It'll get rather dark, but not devastatingly so. (I'm trying to write a more complex story so it will have its dark moments, the prologue being one of them. Rest assured the whole story will not be this dark, though I'll make sure that no-one is a saint either) -The protagonist/protagonists will not be a Mary-Sue. (The plural will be understood when I'm further into the story. They also won't be impossiby unlikeable such as those in many Light novels.) -There is no prophecy (Anyone who says there is, is lying, trust me.)

Bam! Truck-kun, wtf?! I didn’t do anything wrong! Wait, are you god? I get to reincarnate in a fantasy world? I will even have super powers? With this will I finally be able to do all I want?! I will become cool, right? The whole universe will be within my grasp! Thank you, Truck-kun! I will never forget you. Wait, what?… Truck-kun… Screw you! ***** Disclaimer: All materials used in the cover are royalty-freeThis novel is not written with the intent to earn money and therefore a strict release schedule does not apply. I will try to upload the first 7 chapters with the regularity of one chapter every three days, after that the schedule is likely to change to one chapter per week. This would also entail that I will not be putting too much effort into writing this though I will attempt to maintain a decent quality. There will likely be no editing on my part, frankly, I don’t have too much time for this, but we’ll see how it goes.
