《Killer Bay》Of Rats and Men

"Adalet, thank God you're here! No one is going to get any sleep tonight! The good thing is, I think we evacuated Jazz Town's residents just in time. The storm is almost on us!" Andrea says as she and the captain stood beside the bay windows, "but the flood defences are weakening, and we're getting reports that looters are taking over the streets! As if that's not enough, I just got word that a prisoner has taken advantage of the chaos to escape from the penitentiary!"
"Whoa," Frank's eyes widened, "it sounds like we're losing control of Jazz Town!"
"That's exactly why I need Adalet to patrol the streets," she responded, "and you're going too, Frank. There's bound to be trouble out there tonight!
"Don't worry, Andrea. If there's trouble, I'll be staying out of it!" he vowed.
Later, on the streets of Jazz Town...
"Those looters had better not mess with us, eh Adalet?" Frank smirks, "we'll show them who's boss."
"What was that?! Who's there?!" he demanded as Adalet and he turned to the source of the scream. Which turned out to be a tall woman dressed in flashy clothes and the biggest, pinkest curls on their head.
"Hiiii! Get out of my way! Even in these heels, I'm getting far away from that place!" the woman cried in a much deeper voice than they had been expecting.
"What the...?! What happened Ma'am... I mean Sir... I mean just what happened?!" Frank asks looking for the fire.
"In the theatre," she pointed to the building behind her, "there's a... it's disgusting! More disgusting than wearing clogs to a wedding!"
"Frank?" Adalet says to her partner.
"Oh great," the senior detective grumbles, "you're going to tell me to come with you to investigate that theatre, aren't you Adalet?! So much for keeping out of trouble!"
Frank and Adalet ran in the direction that the drag queen had been pointing in. They entered through the broken front doors and hurried down the lobby to the theatre stage. The display that had been set on the stage was not one they would soon forget. A man in an orange jumpsuit was tied to a plush pink chair on center stage, a rough hole had been made in his chest, and dozens of rats were swarming his feet and lap. As the cops descended the stairs to the stage, Adalet picked up a pile of broken metals that had been dropped, possibly by the man's killer.
"All the alcohol in the world isn't going to get that image out of my head! Who would be sick enough to tie someone to a chair and leave them to the rats?!" Frank sighed as he pulls out his phone to call Roxie, "at least we know who the victim is, his jumpsuit has his name on it: "Scott Lee Allan"."
"Frank, that not any jumpsuit, it's a prison uniform!" Adalet corrected, "this has to be the escaped prisoner Andrea told us about! After breaking out, he must have come to Jazz Town!"
"That broken jewelry next to an escaped convict is pretty suspect, I agree. But with your skills I bet you can get it fixed in no time," he smirked as he listened to the ringing tone, "then there's that "lady" waiting outside. This is a bit weird Adalet, but did you think she was a little bit... manly?"
"I think she was born a man," she replies.
"Oh, I get it! She's a man who wears women's clothing! A drag queen! Now that's clear... sort of," he frowned his brows, "let's find out what she was doing in that theatre!"

As Frank talked on the phone with the coroner, Adalet repaired the broken jewelry they had found near the body. It was a golden necklace with a large embroidered crest in the center of the chest plate. The lion was framed by dangling strings of pearls ending in sapphires.
"Ha, nice necklace, Adalet, but I'm not so sure it goes with your outfit," Frank snickers as he put his phone away.
Adalet gave him a deadpanned look, "there's something on the necklace, Frank."
"Okay, my bad. I'll keep the fashion advice to myself," he promises, "you say you've noticed something interesting on that necklace?"
"Yes, it looks like a family crest," she answered showing him the lion.
"You think it's a family crest? Well, that's fancy? If mine had one it would be a barstool and a TV remote!" he laughed, "such a necklace must have insurance records. Maybe you could find out who that family crest belongs to in the database!"
Adalet took his advice and powered on her tablet. After taking and uploading a picture of the crest she began comparing it to the family crests they had on file. She managed to find the family that the crest belonged to in no time, and she shouldn't have been so surprised by who it was.
"The crest on that necklace belongs to the Blade family!" Adalet informed her partner.
"Remember Veronica Blade? She's the beautiful local heiress we met when investigating the murder of Joe Stanford," Frank sighs in remembrance, "well done Adalet, we'd better ask her how her necklace ended up on a crime scene! I just hope she hasn't been evacuated yet!"
Roxie chose that moment to arrive in the theatre to retrieve the body. Leaving it in her hands, Adalet and frank left to go talk to the woman who had reported the murder to them originally. They found the drag queen in the area they had left her and introduced himself.
"Let's hurry this up," she says examining her nails, "I've got to work tonight and my makeup isn't going to do itself."
"You can go when Capt. Adalet says you can go. Now, what were you doing in the abandoned theatre, Ma'am?"Frank questioned.
"Darling, please! I didn't spend years learning to walk in stilettos to be called "Ma'am". I'm Kitty, the drag queen. Ms. LaBombe to you! You think looking this fabulous is cheap? I went to that theatre to see if I could find any old wigs I could "liberate." Kitty gave the, an innocent smile, "but all I found was a... a body! Now that I think about it... I'd seen that man before! He was on DuBois Avenue with the looters, tearing up the shops like housewives in the sales! Like a herd of elephants, but with less style!"
"Thanks for the tip... Ms. Kitty. We'll go check out DuBois Avenue immediately!" he thanks.
Adalet and Frank walked around the block to the street Kitty had directed them to look at. They set Dean and Hunter lose to sniff out any clues, and they didn't come back empty-pawed. Hunter picked up a duffel bag near a burning convenience store, and Dean found some broken green thing just a few feet away from it.
"Look at this street! The looters have taken everything and burned the rest!" Frank cries watching the fires raging around them, "they didn't get everything though. Good job on finding that sports bag, Hunter. Let's look through it! But I don't get why Dean thinks this broken device is more important than all the other broken crap around here. I guess I'll understand once you've fixed it."

Adalet unzipped the duffle bag first and looked inside for anything strange. She was surprised to find a pair of metal shackles near the bottom of the bag, and upon closer inspection saw that they were prison shackles.
"Well, gotta say, I didn't expect you to find prison shackles in that sports bag!" Frank amidst, "you think these might be linked to our victim's escape from prison? Guess we'd better send these shackles to the lab, then!"
Adalet set the shackles aside and turned to work on the broken bits of green plastic. She glued together the matching ends of the shards until she had reconnected all of them. The plastic pieces came together to form a human rat trap with blood splattered on the side.
"Well done Adalet for fixing that... er... What the heck is it? It looks like a house for rats," Frank remarked.
"It's one of those humane rat traps, you know, instead of snapping their necks," Adalet says.
"You think it's a humane rat trap? Who would want to catch rats and not kill them?!" he gags looking a little green, "I guess what matters is that the victim was found covered in rats! And there's blood on the trap! Think you could collect some of it, Adalet?"
She grabbed a q-tip swab and looked at the blood. She swiped a sample of the blood off of the trap and put the stick into a tube with a cap to seal in the sample.
"Perfect! Now that you've gotten some of the blood off that rat trap, all that's left to do is send it to Yann!" Frank grins.
After they had dropped off their la samples at the station, Frank and Adalet headed over to the blades estate to inform Veronica that they had found her necklace on their crime scene.
"Miss Blade, we didn't expect to find you home! Don't you know there's a big storm heading this way?" Frank inquired.
"That storm doesn't scare me, I've slept through hurricanes and still thrown a dinner party the next day," Veronica says smugly, "besides, you can't trust anyone in this town. Why only this morning some hooligan stole the necklace I was wearing right off my neck."
"Someone stole your necklace?! That explains why we found it on our crime scene! The victim stole it. Was it this necklace, ma'am?" he asks holding up the hunk of gold.
"Why yes it is!" she confirmed, "it's been in my family for generations! Oh, thank you, officers, if it wasn't improper I would kiss you!"
He blushed, "it's nothing. Anyway, we're here because the man who stole this necklace from you was found murdered..."
"Well, I'm not surprised! He was a filthy nasty man. I imagine death was too good for vermin like that!"
Autopsy Victim's Body...
"Adalet, you could have cleared those rats off the body before you brought it in here! This is a mortuary, not a petting zoo!" Roxie complained pointing her finger to the cage of rats.
"Sorry, Roxie," Adalet apologized sheepishly, "but Frank refused to touch them even with a ten foot pole!"
"I wasn't going to touch any of those vermin!" Frank defends himself, "thank God Adalet is made of sterner stuff than I am."
"That wouldn't be hard, Frank. Anyway, I examined the body and the good news is we have the murder weapon, or should I say weapons, about fifty of them," Roxie informed them of the possible total number of rats, "the victim was covered in a substance called Rat Attract, which is used by pest control experts to attract rats. It's like chocolate cake for them! They can't get enough."
"You mean whoever killed the victim covered him in this stuff so the rats would eat him?!" he gagged looking a little green.
"Yep. Ingenious isn't it?! And there's more, Adalet. I also analyzed the ropes the victim was tied up with," she picked up the tray with the item on it, "they were tied with a Mexican handcuff knot, very unusual. It's usually only used in the military. Your killer is someone who doesn't mess around, Adalet. They definitely have military training!"
They made a note of Roxie's findings before they left the morgue. They headed down the halls to the forensic lab to see what Yann managed to find out from the blood sample and the prison shackles they had sent over.
"Adalet, your intuition was right once again. The blood you found on that rat trap was the victim's!" Yann confirmed for them, "the killer must have taken the trap with them and dumped it in the street where you found it! But there's more! There was a foreign substance mixed with the victim's blood: alcohol. And not just any alcohol: Gold Stag whiskey!"
"So the killer drinks whiskey?" Frank laughed, "I'm surprised I didn't pick up on that. I can usually sniff out some Gold Stag with my eyes closed!"
"Why don't I doubt that?" Adalet teases, "how about the shackles, Yann?"
"I had a look at those prison shackles you found," Yann answers, "and I found Scott Lee Allan's DNA on them!"
"You mean this guy was able to escape prison while still wearing shackles?! How did he unlock them?" Frank inquired.
"He didn't unlock them. The shackles were burnt through with very strong acid. It was poured on the cuffs and melted the metal," he explained, "the acid is concentrated boric acid. It's very rare, in fact, according to the Health & Safety register only one person in town owns some."
"That person must have been in contact with the victim! Do you have a name?" Adalet asks.
"She's called Ethel Hubcap. And you'll never believe it... She runs a pest control business!" he smirked.
"You don't say!" Frank snorted, "Adalet, let's go talk to this Ethel, shall we?"
They left the station and drove through the streets as fast, and carefully as they could to Ethel's shop to talk to her about helping their victim to escape his restraints.
"Mrs. Hubcap?" Adalet calls into the shop, "we'd like to ask you a few questions about Scott Lee Allan if you have a minute."
"Scott Lee Allan? Oh yes, I remember him. Turned up on my doorstep hungry and in chains. Disgraceful, I said!" Ethel says, "so I fed him some raccoon pie and used my best cockroach acid on his chains. You've got to be good to those in need, that's what I always say."
"Helping an escaped convict is a felony, Mrs. Hubcap," Frank informed in a dead tone, "not to mention Scott Lee Allan has just been murdered, and his body was covered with rats... You work in pest control, don't you?"
"Yes I do," she answered, "but the only thing I use rats for is to make delicious pies outta them! Now if you don't mind, I got squirrel stew on the stove and I don't want the cat gettin' at it."
Later, back at the station...
"Well, it is nice to be safe here back in the station, away from the mean streets!" Frank sighed as he dropped heavily into his seat, "so what have we learned about our escaped convict's murder, Adalet?"
"We know he robbed Veronica Blade of her necklace," Adalet answers.
"But she's hardly a suspect. She isn't capable of murder!" he responded, "that Ethel lady, on the other hand... Sure, she freed the victim of his prison shackles, but she does work in pest control."
"Which means she's got easy access to our murder weapon!" she concluded.
"Well, Adalet, something tells me this is going to be a long n-"
"What was that?!" Frank tumbled out of his seat as all the lights in the station went out with a crack, "... Adalet, are you there? Who switched off the lights? Eek! Someone just touched my hand! Who's there?!"
"It's me, Roxie!" the coroner answered, "people are looting the police station! There must be a hundred of them out there."
Adalet turned in the direction of the hallway, "there in the lobby right now, none are coming this way!"
"I'm not even going to ask how you can tell," that sounded like Hannah.
"Adalet, we need to get out," Roxie spoke, "but the looters are blocking the exits!"
"Well, what do you suggest?!" Frank demanded, "that we climb down the garbage chute?"
In the darkness, Adalet's eye lit up, "that's a great idea, Frank!"
"... You've got to be kidding me."
A few minutes later, in the street...
"Ugh! Who knew we threw away so much rubbish! Is everyone alright?" Franks asked as he picked a banana peel off his shoulder.
"We cannot leave the police station to the looters! I'm putting the hunt for Scott Lee Allan's murderer on hold," Andrea announced.
"What? No!" he exclaims, "we've pieced back together our victim's last moments! We know he took part in the looting after he escaped from prison! We just need more time to figure the rest out!"
The Chief paused for a moment, "... Alright. Adalet, keep investigating. But first I need a volunteer to go back in the station and assess the damage."
"I nominate Frank," Hannah raised her hand.
"Yep, me too," Roxie followed the techie's lead, "thanks for volunteering, Frank."
"What?! Oh, thanks a bunch guys! What happened to everyone pulling together?!" Frank shouted looking at the trash-covered team.
"Frank, calm down," Adalet says dusting of some cookie crumbs, "I'll go with you!"
"Thanks for saying you'll come with me, Adalet. You're a real pal. Alright, let's go back to the station!" he says heading off in the direction of the station's front door.
Back in the Station...
"Phew, thank God, the looters have gone! But everything's ruined! What kind of hooligans would do this?!" Frank yelled looking at the mess of the lobby, "damn it! The looters broke into my locker! That's where I was stashing my whiskey! Do you mind looking through it, Adalet?"
"We literally have a patrol car through of front door, and you're worried about your whiskey?!" Adalet shouts.
He gulps and looks for a change of conversation, "I don't remember seeing that postcard before. Who's it from? "Dear Mom, sharing a room with Scott Lee Allan is hell on earth. I wish he was dead!"... One of the looters knew our victim, and they weren't friends!"
She took the card from him, "this postcard was sent by a prisoner, there's an ID on it! So whoever wrote this must have been our victim's cellmate!"
"We need to figure out who this was! Any chance you can decipher that prisoner ID, Adalet?" he inquired.
"Capt. Adalet! I'm so relieved to see you!" the coops looked over to where the voice was and saw Freddie Alonzo stumbled over to them, "remember me? I'm Freddie Alonzo! The event organizer? We met when poor Elmer Buttons were murdered..."
"You know that guy, Adalet?" Frank says, "hmm, I guess you must have been working with Amy that day... Well, sir, stick around, we'll talk to you as soon as possible."
"How about now?" Adalet responds, "what brings you to the station, Freddie?"
"I came to the station for protection from the looters, but they were here already and beat me up! It's been chaos in town ever since they evacuated most of the population!" Freddie exclaims, "people think they can do whatever they want! Say, do you have a drink, Capt. Adalet? I would kill for a glass of Gold Stag right now."
"You and me both!" Frank sighed.
Adalet elbowed him in the side, "not the time, Frank, not the time..."
"I've even heard that prisoners have escaped from the penitentiary in the chaos! Our town is on the brink of being destroyed!" Freddie continued.
"Talking about prisoners, would you have happened to see this particular man around?" she asks pulling up a picture of their victim.
He took a close look at it, "hmm... No, his face doesn't ring a bell. Sorry, Capt. Adalet. I wish I could have been of help."
They thanked Freddie for his time and sent him on his way. Frank then brought Adalet over to the rows of lockers and directed her to his personal one. Adalet began pulling out items for the locker, a coat, a pair of shoes, some pieces of trash, and a box that didn't belong there.
"What is that packet doing in my locker?!" Frank wondered loudly.
"It's Rat Attack!" Adalet read raising an eyebrow.
"Hey, you're right, it's Rat Attract, the substance the victim was covered in!" he recalled, "wait... just because it was in my locker... you can't suspect me?! After all, we've been through Adalet! Let's get this packet to Yann, he'll prove my innocence!"
Frank ran off to bring the Rat Attack to the lab leaving Adalet and her dogs alone in the lobby. She picked up the postcard and looked at the spot where the prisoner's ID was located. She deciphered the missing parts of the ID and had the completed code just in time for Frank to return.
