《The Will Of The Cat》Chapter Ten: First Day Butterflies

Johny awoke from dreams of being late for school and missing the bus. Checking the time, he had twenty minutes left to sleep before his alarm would go off. Sighing, he laid back down and tried to fall back asleep. He tossed and turned and then finally got comfortable and rested his eyes.
*beep* *beep* *beep*
"Ughhh...", Johny moaned throwing off his blanket and sitting up.
He got dressed and ready then walked into the kitchen.
"Good morning", his father greeted sitting at the table.
"Morning", Johny replied yawning.
"How'd you sleep?", he questioned taking a sip of his coffee.
"I couldn't really sleep".
"Oh? Why's that?", Johny's father intrigued concerned.
"Just anxious I guess", Johny said with a nervous laugh.
"It's almost always like that on the first day back in school. Or your first time going anywhere or doing anything. I remember my first time going to high school. It was quite scary at first, but once I got there I realized everyone else was just as nervous as I was. Well, the freshman. Everyone else didn't really seem to care", his father recalled with a chuckle.
"I'm not in high school though", Johny says scratching his head.
"Well you're smart enough to be. Watch, the counselor is gonna call again one day and urge you to transfer to the highschool".
"I don't know dad. I don't think I'm as smart as you think I am", Johny replied nervously.
"Well I better grab my bag and catch the bus", Johny says walking to the door and grabbing his backpack.
"Okay, well have a good day at school", his father responded smiling.
"I'll see you later, bye!".
Johny closes the door behind him and takes a deep breath of fresh air as he starts walking to the sidewalk. The sun has been up for about an hour it seems. He starts to think about the possibilities of the day. He starts walking towards the end of the street where the bus stop is and he sees a younger kid.
"Just us two here again this year", Johny thinks to himself.
"She should be in first grade now".
"Morning", Johny greets smiling walking up to her and standing beside her.
"Hi Johny!", the girl says smiling.
She was wearing a yellow backpack with pink butterfly designs.
"How was your summer?", Johny asks politely.
"It was fun! I got to go to the ocean!", she answered happily.
"Ooh, that does sound fun. Did you collect any seashells?".
"Yeah, but they're at home. So what did you do this summer?".
"Umm...", Johny hesitates trying to think.

"How did I already forget!?", Johny's inner conscious screamed.
"I went to the mountains with my mom and dad. It was nice", Johny finally replied after a moment.
"Ooh, camping?", she questioned with excitement.
"Sorta", he replied with a nervous laugh.
"I remember when my family went camping. We had a campfire, cooked s'mores, and even went fishing", she said excitedly.
The bus turned the corner and stopped next to them, opening it's doors slowly.
"That's cool", Johny replied letting her go first on to the bus.
"Good morning", the bus driver greeted.
"Good morning", they said walking down the isle to find a seat.
She sat near the front because only the older kids were allowed towards the back. Johny kept going until he was near the back of the bus, then took a seat by himself, sitting next to the window. Then the bus closed it's doors and took off to the next few stops, eventually reaching the school.
All the kids left the bus, going from front to back. Johny walked to the entrance of the mid-school hallway and then went to his locker. He had to leave his bag in there and could only carry the stuff that he needed for each class. Since it was the first day, maybe just a pencil. So that's all he took out. He closed his locker and then went to find the teachers giving out schedules.
This took only a moment and he had his schedule. It was quite busy in the hall. There was almost no where to walk. He looked at his first class: Fitness and Conditioning.
And he slowly made his way to the exit and then to the gymnasium. He walked in and took a seat on the bleachers, waiting for other students to arrive along with the teacher.
A few other kids walked in eventually, and then, after a few minutes the teacher walked out into the open and started taking attendance. Only two people were absent, and one was Johny's friend.
They received a syllabus and went through the class rules. After, they were allowed to play with the gym equipment, but Johny just sat there and waited for the class to end.
A girl sat in front him. She was a new student, or she was a grade below him. He couldn't really tell. He watched her with a bit of interest, mostly because he was bored.
She was holding a notebook, sketching a sunset on the beach. Meticulously shading and adding depth to the image.
Johny watched her hand dance gracefully throughout the page, becoming entranced. Her skin was fair and smooth, and to Johny, her hand seemed perfect. Perfect to hold. Maybe. Just the slightest thought got Johny's heart rate up.

"Just breathe", Johny thought to himself.
"Maybe I should introduce myself".
So he thought of how he would do it and how the conversation could go.
After he was ready, he took a deep breath and leaned a bit closer, getting ready to move to sit next to her. He could smell her perfume. He started to blush and got flustered.
"What are you doing?", Johny heard someone say next to him.
He jumped up and looked around startled.
The girl clipped her lead pencil to the notebook lifting her head up and turned around. She held the notebook against her chest.
"Did you fall asleep and have a nightmare or something?", she asked looking at him with a giggle.
He blushed, embarrassed.
"She's cute...", Johny thought to himself.
"Yes, but it seems I've woken to another dream or perhaps I've died because I'm seeing an angel", the voice suggested Johny to say.
Only he could hear the voice Johny realized. And he blushed more.
"I'm not gonna say that!", he thought.
"N-no", Johny finally replied with a stutter and a nervous laugh.
"I just heard a voice".
As the words left his mouth, he realized how crazy he sounded and regretted his answer.
"Maybe I shouldn't have said that", he thought to himself.
"You hear the voices too?", she questioned with surprise putting her hand over her mouth then laughing cutely.
Johny relaxed.
"Let me guess, you can also see the the shadow people?", she jested.
She was smiling at him, and he was smiling back.
Johny was taken aback with her reply.
"You hear one voice...", Johny rolled his eyes and laughed.
She laughed.
"My name's Bell", she greeted with an innocent smile.
It was as if she was glowing.
"I'm mice to neet you", he replied.
She giggled looking at him confused.
"Sorry, what I meant to say was, I'm Johny. It's nice to meet you", he said nervously.
They talked the rest of the class and during breakfast about their schedules, school, and memories.
When it was time for their next class they parted and went through the rest of their day apart.
Though when lunch came, Johny spent a few minutes looking for her. After a while, he noticed her take a seat while looking towards him. They spent lunch with their regular group of friends, occasionally looking at each other from across the cafeteria and smiling.
After the school day was over, he sat in the back of the bus. He stared out the window, daydreaming. Thinking.
Footsteps and a familiar smell.
Johny blushed as he looked across his seat and saw her, sitting across from him. He felt a bit nervous. He got butterflies.
Bell gave him a cute smile. His heart fluttered and he grinned back. He wasn't sure if he should talk to her or if they were going to sit in silence. He stayed quiet.
She sat next to him, bringing her bag with her. It had a small toy attached to it.
"I usually just listen to music and stare out the window, but I saw you and thought maybe... we could listen together", Bell put forward nervously.
Her cheeks took on a slight pink color as she held a light pink earbud in between her fingers. Johny agreed and they sat together listening to music. She played a few songs that he never heard before, and a few that seemed to have a much deeper, despairing meaning behind the happy tones and upbeat chorus.
She also played... weird music, which he accepted and acknowledged as equally as the others. Johny felt closer to her as they shared their favorite songs and talked about their favorite musical artists. She also showed him a few funny pictures that she had of animals. They barely grazed the surface of the conversation before their time had run out.
She stood up with her bag and smiled waving bye to Johny.
"I'll see you tomorrow", Bell departed beaming saying her farewell.
Johny was a bit sad she had to leave, but was excited for tomorrow. He waited only a few minutes before he got off at his stop. He walked home and went inside to his room. He laid down thinking about the day's events.
"So you have a mate?", Masahiro asked from the doorway smirking.
Johny blushed and sat up, his eyes widened.
"No! She's just a new friend! And how would you know about her?!".
"Quite the 'angel', isn't she?".
Johny stayed quiet.
"Allow me to give you some advice; not all the stars you can see at night are there. Butterflies aren't actually made of butter".
Johny looked at him dumbfounded.
"Yeah. Of course they're not made of butter. Who would believe that?", Johny asked confused.
Masahiro turned and began to walk away.
"I did at one point", Masahiro uttered to himself thinking.
