《The Will Of The Cat》Chapter Eight: The Distance

Looking over the trees, Johny is able to make out the smoke coming from the brick chimney of the cabin. A few birds can be heard chirping.

"There it is!", Johny calls down to Barry.

"I guess you were right. It would have been quicker if we just kept going instead of taking this detour".

Johny climbs down and picks up the basket that was laying by the base of the tree. He sighs.

"I guess this might be my last day out here", Johny comments looking at Barry.

"So six days is all it took".

Johny looks at Barry and begins ruffling his hair before starting to head down a path which he probably wouldn't see again.

The grass outlined his footsteps as he continued through the forest. Barry followed behind him with a slight look of sorrow in his eyes.

They plodded along in silence.

As time passed, the silence remained. Johny could only think to himself about this entire week becoming nothing but a memory to him. The thought pained him, but it was all he could think about.

They walked and walked almost endlessly, until they reached a small lake. Across it a path could be seen leading towards a clearing. Johny was only a moment away from the cabin now. He turned towards Barry and gave him a tight hug goodbye. Taking the only basket left from his back, he poured out the berries that were stuffed inside.

The hours he spent with Barry seemed to fill and create the void in his mind. This hollow feeling of leaving someone wasn't entirely new to him, yet it felt new. He thinks back to his first pet dog.

Johny smiled dully at Barry as he walked away. He'd see him again he told himself with each step away from him. Barry stared sadly as he sat by the pile of berries.

Johny was now gone from sight, but only at a glance as he left an impression in Barry's mind.

"I'm back!", Johny greets walking into the house and placing the empty basket by the sliding door.

No answer.

Johny walked around the empty cabin hearing only his own footsteps. The sound echoed throughout the cabin as he walked around it. It was almost as if it was taunting Johny.

Suddenly Masahiro spoke up from behind Johny, "Well done, and not a moment too late. Your parents are outside packing for tomorrow. You've passed by the way. And I saw what happened out there, I'm sorry. You'll see him and your other friend again though, I am most certain of it".

Johny's inner turmoils seemed to calm like the sea and he truly felt like he could trust the cat. He turned around to face Masahiro and smiled.

"I needed to hear that, thanks".

"Of course", Masahiro replied smiling back.

Johny's parents then walked in and greeted him. His mother was just overwhelmed with relief as tears streamed down her face while she gave Johny an extremely tight hug. Johny's father on the other hand was waiting patiently for his turn with his eyes barely watering up.

After the reunion they talked for what seemed hours about the week. Johny didn't tell them about his dreams though. Then his parents went to prepare dinner while he went to take a shower.

The dreams recurred through his head as he stood there. They didn't make sense to him. Why did he barely start having these types of dreams now? He shook the thought away and finished up.

A light steam was revealed as Johny stepped out of the bathroom. He walked into the kitchen and sat at the table. A few random thoughts floated through his head as he stared blankly at the wood surface of the table.

"Everything alright Johny?", his father questioned with a concerned smile.

"Yeah, just thinking", he answered continuing to stare.

His father let out a nervous laugh and then a sigh.

"Is your body doing the thing?", he asks leaning in closer, making sure only Johny hears.

"What? What thing?", Johny questions sitting up straighter and lifting his head up from his crossed arms.

"You know... The thing. Where you start growing facial hair and such, and you get all sweaty for no reason. Your voice also gets deeper, but it also decides to get high pitched randomly. I wonder why tha-", his father began to explain in a rant before Johny cut him off.

"No, that's not... What? Where's this coming from?", he asks with a confused look.

"Well obviously from my mouth. Though it could also be from my vocal cords, or... even my brain... Just depends on how you look at it", his father answered with a laugh.

Johny just looks down shaking his head and face palms. His father sits across from him, smiling.

"You know Johny, that if you ever want to talk about anything, you can talk to me. I'm here for you. Well you can also talk to your mother, just not about guy things, am I right?", his father says nudging him.

"I heard that!", Johny's mother shouts before going after his father.

His father was just laughing as Johny's mother started shaking him and interrogating him.

"Guy things?! What guy things?! Just what do you plan on talking about with our little boy?!", she questioned vigorously, a slight blush on her cheeks.

Johny couldn't help but smile at the scene.

"You know, the usual", his father answered lying on the table dizzy.

"You don't want to tell me? Fine!", his mother pouted going back to the stove and turning it off.

"Gotta protect the Bro Code, it's top secret", his father replied with a gesture.

"You know what's going to be top secret? Where your body's gonna be if you show our boy anything he doesn't need to see!", she threatened putting his father in a chokehold.

"I'll kill you!".

Johny could tell that she was only bluffing. She would never hurt his father. Same goes vice versa. It was funny to watch when they got like this though. It would make Johny wonder what his parents were like when they were younger.

"Get your mind out of the gutter, I would never", his father explained.

His mother blushed really hard now.

"You... It's nothing like that! You're going in the gutter!", she shouted dragging him towards the sliding glass door.

"I guess this is goodbye Johny. You're the man of the house now. I love you", his father said crying.

Johny just waved at him as he was dragged outside.

His mother walked in a moment later with her hands together. His father could be seen outside laying on the floor with his face pressed against the glass.

"Who's ready for dinner?".

Johny then realized something and questioned, "Where's Masahiro?".

I'm sorry that this took as long as it did. Remember when I said that I try putting my happiness into the story? Well, I haven't been that happy lately. To be honest, I've been feeling really stressed and miserable, and even lonelier with what's going on. I haven't been able to really talk to anyone so I wanted to share with you guys. Maybe some of you feel the same, but I don't know. We all have different situations. I have a lot of things that I want to talk about, but I don't really have anyone to share with. I'm not sure though. I'll probably talk more about myself later on, though I would also like to hear about you guys. Anyway, here's the recommendations:

Anime:

1. Charlotte

2. FMA Brotherhood

3. Dororo

Music:

1. Lund - Skin and Bones

2. Alec Benjamin - Six Feet Apart

3. Powfu - Death Bed

Try and smile. And stay safe, later.
