《Undead Nightmare》Chapter 9: Together In The DEAD

Standing on a stage in front of a large group of JDF soldiers is the general of the JDF. He has gathered all of the JDF soldiers here for an important briefing regarding the state of the evacuation of Japan as well as the situation across the sea. In the gathering of JDF soldiers we find Remi and Koturo, not at their post on the abandoned aircraft carrier.

"Alright men, the situation has changed drastically, our reports show us that all of Japan as well as the world has been infected with this new Necropsy Virus, we still have no confirmation of where this virus came from or how it was able to spread so fast" the general tells all of the soldiers

Behind the general a projector screen shows a map of Japan covered in a red color. Next an image of the world appears on the screen, all the continents are also covered in red.

"All of the world's governments have fallen to this virus and it appears that the leaders in the United States and other countries have decided to launch their missiles at one another before they are all dead" the general tells the soldiers

Whispers can be heard coming from the soliders as they hear about the missiles being launched

"We've determined that trajectory of some of those missiles will pass over Japan and will most likely detonate, we do not know what will happen when these missiles will detonate but it won't be good" the general says

A map of Japan appears on the projector screen showing the path the missiles will take. All of the soliders begin to get fearful of this, Remi begins to worry about Y/N and what will happen to him and his friends.

"These missiles and the fact that we do not know the number of uninfected survivors alive, the evacuation schedule has changed, instead of the original seven day plan we will remain here for an unknown period of time, if the situation arises we could end up leaving now" the general tells all the soldiers

Remi didn't want to hear that, she didn't know where Y/N and his friends were but she knew that they would be coming. If the JDF left now, Y/N and his friends would end up being trapped here in Japan.

"It has also come to our attention that the Necropsy Virus is mutating in selective hosts, so far we've documented undead that have tougher skin, some with low level intelligence, enough to move out of the way of gunfire or dodge blows to the head and such, we've also encountered that those that are freshly turned are a bit more faster and aggressive, these are the only mutations and changes we've seen, nothing serious as of yet" the general told the soliders

With that, the general dismissed all of the soliders and had them return to their posts until further notice. Remi and Koturo were walking back to their post unsure of what was going to happen next.

"What do you want to do Remi?" Koturo asked Remi

"I don't want to leave my brother and his friends behind" Remi answered

"You do know what that involves, right?" Koturo asked Remi

"I do, I am aware of the punishment for abandoning post and ignoring direct orders" Remi answered

"Whatever you decide to do just know that I will follow behind your beautiful ass all the way" Koturo tells Remi

"Rangers Tatagami and Kotani" a voice says getting the attention of the two women

Both of them turn around and see that the general is the one who got their attention

"General Hitaki sir" both of them say giving the general a salute

"At ease" the general says

Both Remi and Koturo drop the salute and relax a bit

"You two are needed for a new mission briefing" the general tells Remi and Koturo

"We're being reassigned?" Remi asks confused

"Yes, both of you have been assigned to a new mission" the general answers

"What's the mission sir?" Koturo asks the general

"You'll find out" the general says as he walks away from the two of them

"I have a bad feeling about this" Remi says to Koturo

"No kidding" Koturo replied

Streets: City

Walking down the streets of the city was Y/N and Saeko, both of them had escaped the horde of undead at the overpass while Saya's mother and a group of survivors saved her and the others. Alone together, the two were headed towards Saya's house, there they would be able to regroup with the others. The plan was that they would go as far as they could until it got dark, Y/N would have preferred they had a mode of transportation but so far nothing was looking good. Yes there was cars and other vehicles all over the street but some of them had crashed into other cars or buildings and other objects. Some were even flipped over while others looked as though they had been pilfered and most likely had no gas in them.

For that reason alone, Y/N and Saeko were walking to Saya's house instead of driving there. The two of them kept their head on a swivel and had their weapons drawn and ready. Saeko with her wooden sword and Y/N with his wakizashi and tanto. He would have used his firearms but he was running low on ammunition for them and he wanted to save every bullet for a similar situation to the overpass. So far they hadn't run into any undead and the ones they did run into ignored them and shambled past them. The ones that did go after them were dispatched quickly and quietly as to not draw more to their location.

Things were really looking good for us being out here in the open on the streets, anything could happen. Busujima and I didn't have a way of getting to Takagi's house faster then this. We could run but that would just be a waste of energy and would make it more difficult to deal with zombies if we ran into a large group of them. The two of us had been quiet since we escaped the overpass, we didn't really say anything to one another. Our attention was focused on our surroundings. We weren't going to take any chances, neither of us wanted a repeat of the overpass.

"Looks like it is going to rain" Busujima said

I looked up at the sky and saw that the clouds were starting to darken and turn gray. It did look like it was going to rain or at least it could if not now then maybe sooner or later.

"We need to get a move on, don't want to be stuck in the rain" I said

"Hey Tatagami-san, I think I see something that might be of use to us" Busujima said

I looked over to where she was pointing and saw a store and parked in the window display was an ATV

"Looks like our luck is changing" I said

The two of us walked over to the store and I broke the window, the alarm didn't go off which was good. I walked over to the ATV and saw that it ran on a battery and not gasoline which was a life saver.

"Is it button activated?" Busujima asked

"No, looks like you need a key for it" I said looking at the ignition on the ATV

Looking around the store, I found the key for the ATV and got on it as Busujima sat behind me

"Do you know how to drive one of these?" Busujima asked me

"Yeah, I've had quite a bit of practice with these and other vehicle like this" I answered

Before we left, I looked over at a wall and saw a poster with the ATV on it, apparently this thing was also an aquatic vehicle

"That seems useful" I said to myself

As I drove out of the store some zombies shambled past us and tried to stop us but Busujima took care of them. Now with a vehicle, Busujima and I could get to Takagi's house a lot more quicker or we could get as close as we could before it got dark.

Driving down the street, it had started to pour down rain, both Busujima and I started to get soaked. Looking around the two of us saw all the destruction and noticed how quiet it was. It was weird and unsettling at the same time, I was still surprised at how quickly things went to hell.

"The river is probably flooded from all of this rain" Busujima said

"It probably is" I replied

We need to cross the river to get to the other side, that way we could go to Takagi's house quicker without having to take more time finding a bridge and crossing it. Eventually the two of us came upon the river and like we had predicted, it had been flooded from all of the rain. Behind us a group of zombies was shambling towards us quickly. Thankfully the ATV was also an aquatic vehicle so I could just drive into the river without having any problems. I then drove into the river and avoided all of the zombies behind us, Busujima and I looked back and saw some of the zombies fall into the river.

"Do you think they can swim?" Busujima asked me

"I hope not" I answered

We continued to drive along the river as the rain fell on us, not going to lie, I was a bit distracted. Busujima was soaked and I could feel her wet skin pushing on my back as she held onto me. Being in the water didn't help much either, both of us were cold and wanted out of here. Eventually I came across a sandbar that we could drive to and take a break on.

"Where do you want to go from here?" I asked Busujima

"From what Takagi told me, her house is located near the hills, I would like to get there before it gets dark" Busujima answered

"I hate to tell you this but it looks like that won't be happening, it'll be getting dark real soon" I said

"I understand, let's find a place we can rest for the night, out of the rain" Busujima said

"As you wish" I said to her as I drove off the sandbar back into the river

Plaza: City

After driving out of the river, Y/N and Busujima eventually came across a plaza in the city. The ATV was almost dead so Y/N crashed it into the plaza fountain setting of an alarm. That alarm drew in undead and allowed both Y/N and Saeko to kill them. The plan was they'd kill as many undead as they could so they could find a safe place to sleep for the night without any problems. As the undead came in, Y/N and Saeko killed them all quickly and quietly. Bothing using their melee weapons to not make more noise and to save on ammunition.

Y/N used his wakizashi along with his combat sickle to kill the undead coming at him. He looked over and saw that Saeko was moving effortlessly as she swung her wooden sword and killed the undead around her. The two kept up at this for a good while until Y/N saw Saeko stop and freeze for a moment.

"Tatagami-san" Saeko said getting Y/N's attention

"What is it Busujima?" Y/N asked Saeko worried

"I can't do it, I can't" Saeko answered

Y/N walked over to Saeko and saw to undead children standing before her, she couldn't kill them. Y/N knew that there would be children who had turned but up till now they hadn't run into any. Seeing that Saeko couldn't do it, Y/N offered to kill them instead just to put her at ease. Y/N pulled out his revolver and shot both of the undead children in the head, killing them instantly.

"Let's get out of here" Y/N said as he holstered his pistol and put his hand on Saeko's shoulder

Temple Shrine: City

After what happened at the plaza, Busujima and I left, we managed to find a shrine that overlooked the city. It was almost empty given a few monks that had turned into zombies. Busujima and I killed both of them and fortified the temple building so no zombies could get in. Both of our clothes had been soaked so we took them off and hung them up to dry. I was in the main room of the temple shrine alone cleaning my guns and making sure they still worked and hadn't been damaged by the rain or water.

Once I was done with that, I sat them down off to the side and leaned back towards the floor. It had been a long day and I was extremely exhausted from everything. I was wearing nothing but my boxers and I really wanted to wear something before I went to sleep. Now that I thought about it, I wondered where Busujima was and what she was doing.

"Tatagami-san, I'm coming in" Busujima said from behind the screen door

At that moment I realized I was basically naked and that Busujima was also basically naked. That was an embarrassing situation that I did not want to be in.

"WAIT!!! I'm not ready yet" I said in a panic as I tried to cover my lower half

The screen door opened and in walked Busujima wearing a kimono instead of nothing like I had thought

"I brought you something to wear as well as a few interesting items I found in the shrine" Busujima said to me as she walked into the room

"What did you bring?" I asked her letting out a mental sigh of relief

"I found a kimono for you to wear" Busujima answered showing me the folded up kimono in her hands

It was a black kimono with red dragon and gold phoenix markings on it

"Interesting" I said as I took it from her hands

I began to put the kimono on like my grandfather had shown me how to do all those years ago before Busujima stepped in and helped me out

"Let me help you" Busujima said as she began to help me put on the kimono and wrap the obi around it

I could feel her hands running along my back and my arms as she put on the kimono. She could see the scars all over my body, the scars from the hell I went through and it felt kind of embarrassing.

"I have a feeling you don't want to talk about these so I won't ask but where did these burns come from?" Busujima asked me

"Oh those, they happened when we were at the tunnel and the bus full of zombies exploded" I answered, telling her how I got the burn marks

"Do they hurt?" Busujima asked me

"They did at first but I got over it and moved on" I answered

Busujima didn't say anything after that she just continued to wrap the obi around me until she was finished. Once I had something to wear I sat down on the tatami mat and stretched out a bit. Busujima sat down next to me and placed an old looking box in front of me.

"What's in the box?" I asked Busujima

"I found this when I was looking around the shrine for food" Busujima answered

She opened the box and pulled out an old looking katana, looking at the design and how old it looked, you could tell that it had been at the shrine for some time now

"Have you ever used a real one before?" I asked her

"No, I've only ever used wooden ones and kendo swords" Busujima answered as she held onto the katana and got a feel for it

Busujima then put the katana away and brought out another box and sat it down in front of me. I opened the box and pulled out a katana, this one looked different from the first one Busujima pulled out. The handle and the sheath had a unique design on it and the blade itself had been extremely polished. This blade had been very well taken care of, enough to the point you couldn't tell how old it was.

"This feels light which is weird, they usually are heavier" I said to my self before I sheathed the katana and but it back in the box

"I also found this blade and it is something I've never seen before" Busujima said taking out another sword

This sword had a more unique looking curved handle and blade, it was a bit shorter and looked like a Chinese quing

"What kind of blade is it?" Busujima asked me

"This sword is actually a Chinese quing, its a more curved sword then the typical Chinese straight sword" I answered

"You know a bit about that blade, I'm impressed" Busujima said

"Not many people know this put I'm half Chinese, my father's ancestors migrated from China to the U.S a long time ago, my gran and gramps moved back to China and raised my father and uncles there for awhile before moving back to the states, they taught us children all the traditions and culture of our heritage" I told Busujima

"I didn't know that actually, I'm surprised since you don't look Chinese, you look mostly Japanese" Busujima said

"Weird, I thought everyone at school knew about that" I said confused

"I heard a rumor there was a mixed race student at school and that others bullied them but I didn't put much stock into caring about it since their heritage didn't effect me" Busujima said

I was taken a bit back by that, I was surprised to hear her say that and to tell me she didn't care what I was mixed with

"My grandfather taught me to judge one on their character and not their blood" Busujima said

"My grandfather taught me that as well, he actually told me a lot about your grandfather, both of them trained in their own sword styles" I said

"I had a feeling I remembered you from somewhere I was just having a hard time remembering" Busujima said

"Yeah, I was the little kid training at the dojo when we met all those years ago" I said rubbing the back of my head

"What happened to you after that day?" Busujima asked me

I was a bit hesitant to answer considering how painful it was to talk about but I felt like I could trust Busujima with this

"After that day, time went on and my parents ended up dying, my sister and I moved back here to Japan where my aunt and uncle took care of us and I use that word loosely" I said with disgust

"What did they do to you?" Busujima asked curiously

"They mentally and verbally tortured my sister and I but they also physically tortured me" I answered

I could see that Busujima was putting two and two together and figured that was where my other scars came from

"And what was happening at school didn't make that better" I said with a sigh

"Why did you bring those blades to school, was it to end everything?" Busujima asked me

"No, I'm not that depressed to do that, I brought the blades because my history teacher told me to do so" I answered

"Why did he do that?" Busujima asked

"Because of their history, my grandfather used them when he fought in WWII" I answered

"Your grandfather severed the empire, I see" Busujima said

"Not exactly, my grandfather saw what Japan was doing to its enemies before the war started and before the U.S joined in, not wanting to be apart of that he left to America and joined the armed forces and fought for America and the allies, my teacher wanted to mock him and his sacrifices in front of the class" I told Busujima

"That is horrible, one should not judge and mock another for their decision to do what they believe is right" Busujima said
