《The Avengers Compound》Tony and Peter have a heart to heart... oh look Clint's there too

Tony is chilling on a couch in the living room when Natasha walks in.
Natasha: Hey Tony.
Tony (jumps): God Romanoff, don't sneak up on me like that.
Natasha: We need to talk.
Tony: Ooooo scary.
Natasha: I'm serious Tony. It's about Peter.
Tony (standing up quickly): Why? What's wrong with him? Is he hurt!?
Natasha (quickly): No, he's fine. Just playing Nintendo with Scott. We need to go somewhere more private.
Natasha and Tony: *Walks out of the room, and Tony follows*
Natasha leads Tony onto the roof, and they sit on the edge looking out over the compound.
Tony: So... what's wrong with Peter?
Natasha: I'm worried about him. In training he had a breakdown during a simulation and ran out of the room. He came in half an hour later, but I could tell something was wrong. I hate to say this, but it was like a PTSD attack.
Tony: He's just a kid, what does he have PTSD from?
Natasha: He's been through a lot.
Tony: What was the simulation of?
Natasha: Plane crash.
Tony: That simulation is quite intense, might not necessarily be PTSD or a panic attack.
Natasha: You have to believe me, something is going on. You need to talk to him.
Tony: I can't, Nat.
Natasha (getting frustrated): Why not?
Tony (also getting frustrated): I don't wanna ruin our relationship!
Natasha (yelling): WHAT RELATIONSHIP? YOU HARDLY TALK TO HIM OR SHOW AFFECTION AT ALL!
Tony (yelling): I DON'T WANT TO GET ATTACHED!
Natasha: He needs you Tony. You're like his dad.
Tony: If he starts thinking of me as his dad, I might start acting like mine.
Natasha: Then don't.
Tony (sighing): It's not that easy.
Natasha: You have a daughter, Tony. Treat Peter like you treat Morgan.
Tony: *Goes silent, thinking*
Tony: I'll try.

Natasha: But what caused him to react like that?
Clint emerges from the shadows he's been hiding in.
Clint: I know.
Natasha and Tony: *Jump at his voice*
Tony: Jesus Barton, you're as bad as Nat.
Natasha: Have you been watching us the whole time?
Clint (shrugging): Yep.
Tony: You little spy!
Clint: Technically, that's exactly what I am.
Natasha: Let's stay on track here. What happened to Peter?
Clint: He came up onto the roof after the plane crash simulation. He told me a lot of things about his past, I didn't think a kid his age should or can deal with. First, he watched his uncle get shot. Then, a freaking building collapsed on him, and he was on our invisible jet when it crashed onto the beach.
Natasha (interrupting): That's probably why he couldn't deal with the simulation. He's been through a lot the poor kid.
Clint: I'm not finished.
Natasha and Tony: *share a concerned look*
Clint: He then got beat up by the Vulture, then RAN INTO THE FIRE TO SAVE HIM! He went through several mind torturing battles with Mysterio, then got ran over by a train. But the one that affected him the most, I think, is having to watch you almost die, Tony. You're really his second dad, and the thought of losing you after losing his father, mother and uncle would break him. The kid's barely 18 years old and been through more than most people would ever.
Natasha (softly): And he carries all this around? The poor kid.
Tony: *Wipes away a tear*
Natasha: Tony? You alright.
Tony (breathing shakily): Yeah, just gimme a minute.
Natasha and Clint walk back downstairs.
Tony: *starts sobbing, blaming himself for everything. He looks down and sees Peter teaching Vision how to throw a basketball with Sam and Scott*

Tony: I'm so sorry, kid. I had no idea. I need to be here for you.
Tony gets up and walks downstairs.
Tony walks outside to where Peter is playing basketball.
Tony: Hey Pete? Walk with me for a minute.
Peter (throws the basketball to Sam): Okay, Mr Stark.
Peter jogs over to Tony, who leads him inside. They start walking up to the roof again.
Tony: *checks behind all the pillars*
Peter: Uhhh, what are you looking for?
Tony: Barton. He hides up here sometimes so IF HE'S HERE, BUGGER OFF BIRD BRAIN!
Tony and Peter: *wait for a while, and when nothing happens, Tony sits down on the edge, and gestures for Peter to join him*
Tony: I have something important to say, Peter, and I don't want to mess it up, so give me a minute.
Peter: Okie dokie.
Tony (hesitates for a minute): Have you been through a lot?
Peter: I dunno, Mr Stark. Lots of the heroes here have been through way worse than me.
Tony: But has what you've been through seemed like a lot? Forget about everyone else, I'm focusing on you, Peter.
Peter (tears stinging his eyes): Yes. I've been struggling to cope. I'm sorry for dumping this on you.
Tony: That's what I'm here for, kid.
Peter: Thanks Mr Stark.
Peter: *tears start spilling over*
Tony: *hesitantly puts an arm around Peter, and pulls him close*
Peter: It's really hard, Mr Stark. To live with everything I've been through.
Tony: I know, it's alright. You can be honest with us, and yourself. If you're struggling, we all are here for you. I'm here for you. I want to be the father you need.
Peter (starts crying harder): Thank you Mr Stark.
Tony: I-I love you Peter.
Peter: I love you too Mr Stark.
Tony: *holds Peter close for a minute*
Tony (hesitantly): You can call me dad if you want.
Peter: Okay...dad.

The Patchwork Realms
Athos is a good dog. He likes frisbee, bacon, and his family (SmolFriend, Mom, and Dad). He's not so keen on falling through an interdimensional portal to a fantasy world where floating boxes tell you that you've just been given status as the 'Supreme Exemplar' of your species, a powerful package of abilities that includes human-level intelligence. Sure, being smart is nice but less so when it comes with the need to survive in a land made from bits of different dimensions stitched together like patches in a quilt. A thousand species, a thousand lands, sorcery and super science rubbing elbows, wars and intrigue everywhere...it's exhausting for a good dog who just wants to go home! Note that this is a work in progress with lots of fiddly numbers so I will occasionally need to go back and fix errors, and this might affect events of earlier chapters. I'll try to keep this to a minimum and will post a note whenever it happens. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
