《Leather Jacket Girl (girlxgirl)》Chapter Twenty-Eight

Emmy and I had been friends for some time and I knew that I didn't want anything to get in the way of that. I had always tried to show warmth to her and had been there for her as much as I possibly could have been. She was my beautiful, brilliant, best friend and it hurt to not be talking to her. Part of me felt as though it was almost a necessity, though. If I didn't talk to her then I couldn't focus on the way her dating Lois made me feel.

"Someone here looks deep in thought," Courtney commented, as she sat down beside me on the grass outside the school building.

I plucked at the daisy in front of me and shrugged.

"I'm not deep in thought. I was just thinking about lunch," I said.

Courtney chuckled as she slipped down to lie upon the grass and gazed up at the clouds overhead.

"Right," she said, though she sounded as though she didn't believe me. "I'll be fair on you, Clarke. I'll believe you this time around but I can't help but think that something is going on with you. You and Emmy have been friends for a while, right?" she asked me.

I murmured in agreement.

"Okay, so it's probably tough to see your best friend all of a sudden spend so much time with someone else," Courtney said.

"Yes," I replied.

"You know what that sounds like?" she asked me.

I felt my eyebrows crease together slightly, then.

"What?" I asked her.

"It sounds like a you problem," Courtney said, "Of course, I should be less harsh on you. Perhaps Emmy was in the wrong here, too. Perhaps she led you to believe that something more could come from your friendship and that led you to developing these feelings that you can't quite shake-"

Courtney stopped, as she caught sight of my eyes which were presently narrowed at her.

"Okay, okay. I'll stop. Do you want a cookie?" she asked me.

"Please," I said.

"'Atta girl," Courtney replied, as she grabbed a cookie out of her bag and handed it to me, so the skin of our hands gently touched, momentarily. "England has been pleasant so far this year. Wouldn't you agree? I mean, usually it rains all of the time but it's not all that bad this year," Courtney said.

"I suppose it's not that bad," I replied.

Courtney smirked.

"Neither are you, bunny," she said.

"I'm not a bunny," I said.

"Well, you certainly were on Halloween night, Clarke. Besides, bunnies are adorable. I like it. I'm calling you that now," she said.

I rolled my eyes at her.

"Something you want to say to me, bunny?" she teased.

"Yes. You can be so damn annoying," I replied.

"You love it really," Courtney said.

"No. You're wrong. I don't like you," I said.

Courtney released a soft laugh, as she stood up from her spot.

"Who said anything about you liking me, Phoebe?" she asked me, before wandering away with a cookie in her grasp.

I sighed and decided it was about time for me to move, too.

I walked back into the school building and soon found Emmy stood by her locker. She put some of her mathematics books away and then turned back to me.

"Hey, you. How's it going?" she asked me.

"It's going alright, thank you. How's things going with you?" I asked her.

I couldn't deny it. I felt slightly robotic. I felt as though if I didn't try to keep things casual then I might blurt out something I didn't mean to.

"I'm going to meet Lois soon! Do you want to come and walk with me? Lois mentioned you and said she hasn't seen you in a while," Emmy said.

"Sure," I replied.

I mostly said it because Emmy was my best friend and I didn't want to distance myself from her. I would feel bad if I did that.

The two of us made our way towards the exit of the school and soon found Lois outside with her little Toyota.

"Hey hey," Emmy said, as she wandered over to Lois to wrap her arms around her.

In the meantime, I stared awkwardly at the ground until Lois spoke to me.

"Hey Emmy, hey Phoebe," Lois greeted the both of us.

Lois had this thoughtful expression on her face which made me just feel as though she was trying to read me. I shifted between my feet again and reminded myself to be friendly. Most of the time it wasn't exactly a challenge and I knew that it was simply my feelings of jealousy that were getting in the way. However, I couldn't deny that I had them. I couldn't deny that this whole thing was making me feel ever so slightly upset.

"I promised that I would clean the place up tonight and you know I'm persevering towards getting this management position. Do you think the two of us could stop by the cafe tonight and organise it together?" Lois asked.

"If you're asking me to help out a cute girl then I am going to have to say yes to that," Emmy said, as her lips twitched up slightly.

Lois thanked her and then turned her attention back to me.

"I could help out," I said, as I moved some of my hair out of my face, as the wind began to move against it.

"Yeah? That would be cool, Phoebe," Lois said, as her eyes brightened.

"But don't you have so much work to do, Phoebs?" Emmy asked me.

I should have seen this coming. She didn't want me there.

"Oh yeah, of course. Silly me. Have a good time, you two," I told them.

The both of them said their goodbyes and began to walk back over to Emmy's car so that they could both leave me. I stood there in the car park for a few minutes before deciding it was time to head home.
