《Leather Jacket Girl (girlxgirl)》Chapter Fourteen

"Hey team!" Ryder called out, as we joined the sports team on the field. I could recognise some of the boy's faces. We had Oliver, Kian and well, Ryder, of course. The new edition was Emmy, who looked a little nervous but I could also see the determination in her eyes. I had a feeling she was going to be just fine.

"Hey captain," Emmy called back.

"That's the spirit, Rose!" he called back to her, "Now, I have a good feeling that we have a good game ahead of us," he said with optimism.

"There's only four of us, though, cap," Emmy said.

"The others will be here soon," Ryder explained.

Emmy nodded her head in understanding, as she looked away a little sheepishly.

Sure enough, soon the other players arrived, which meant that it was time for the game to begin and I would watch the whole thing. Of course, my eyes would probably be trained on Emmy the whole time. How had I ever thought that I had feelings for Ryder? I supposed that I must have been deeply, deeply closeted at the time.

I sat nearby them as the football game started and watched. I really wished that I had brought myself some popcorn but I wasn't sure that was exactly customary at a football game like this. My stomach grumbled. I supposed that I had forgotten to eat today, which really wasn't ideal. It was a good thing that my sister was known for ordering us pizza on a regular occasion. Well, it was a good thing for my taste buds, not so much for my health. I also wasn't sure if Bow should be exposed to so many fats at such a young age but he loved pizza. Who was I to stand in between a boy and his one true love?

As I pulled my attention away from my thoughts, I returned my attention to the game taking place in front of me.

I could tell by the way that Ryder's jaw twitched a little, as he watched the other players move around, that he was a little anxious about what the outcome of this game was going to be. However, if there was one thing that I had always known about Ryder, then it was that he was an incredibly courageous person. He worked with his team until the game reached its conclusion and they won! Emmy scored the last goal! My confidence in her hadn't been in vain.

Emmy rushed over to me and merrily wrapped her arms around me.

"Did you see what I did there? Did you see that?" she beamed.

"Feeling less anxious now?" I asked her.

"Definitely. Want to still go to the cafe? I may have invited Ryder and the other guys to come along with us," she told me.

I swallowed in my slight nervousness. It was fine, though. I knew these guys. Well, I knew Ryder. He was talkative enough to the point that I probably really didn't need to be that concerned with what I said to them.

"Uh, sure," I said.

Emmy smirked at that and just reached out to give my hand a gentle squeeze in hers.

Oliver ended up having to leave early anyway because he had to help his dad out with work at home.

So, the group that ended up going to the cafe comprised of Emmy, Ryder, Kian and I.

As soon as we arrived there, we walked over to the counter to make our purchases.

"I'll buy for you," Emmy said.

"I'll buy for you," I replied.

Emmy's nose wrinkled up a little at that statement.

"No, seriously, Emmy. I've got this," I told her.

Emmy simply shrugged in response to my statement.

"Okay, Clarke. Latte please," she told me.

"Cookies?" I asked her.

Emmy was the queen of wanting to start a diet but never managing it. However, this time she persevered.

"No," she said.

"Alright then. Two lattes please," I told the barista once we reached her.

"Hold on," Emmy said, as her eyes narrowed on the girl.

I didn't understand why she was staring so intently at her until I realised who this was. This was the pink leather jacket girl from the music festival! I really did have photographic memory, it appeared.

"Wow," I said.

"I really like your style," Emmy blurted, as the barista passed her the drink.

I looked towards the badge on the barista's uniform to find the little name tag. It appeared that her name was Lois.

"Want my number to go along with your latte?" Lois asked her.

"Lois!" the manager yelled to her.

"What? I didn't say anything," she called back.

Lois playfully smiled back at Emmy, then, as she lowered her voice.

"I finish work in about half an hour, give or take," she told her.

Emmy nodded her head understandingly at that statement.

"Okay," she said.

Wow. Emmy had certainly switched fast. I knew that she had always had a preference for women over men though, so this did make sense. Besides, Lois was cute. I also realised, though, that this meant that Emmy just might have a better chance of asking out a girl soon than I ever could have.

I swallowed. I needed to talk to Courtney. Maybe I could text her.

I would go through with it, too, if my anxiety didn't prevent me from even looking at her contact name on the screen of my phone.

I felt tempted to awkwardly groan. Anxiety was a nightmare.

With that in mind, I took a sip of my latte to distract my mind from my worries and ended up just scalding my tongue in the process. Damn it.

"You okay, honey?" Emmy asked me.

"I'm all good," I replied.

"Good," Emmy replied.

Soon after that, Emmy got integrated into a discussion with the football team, while I simply watched wondering what I could possibly do to stop my friend being stolen away from me. I realised that, ultimately, there wasn't very much I could do. I was going to have to learn to accept the fact that my life was changing.
