《Leather Jacket Girl (girlxgirl)》Chapter Thirteen

A few days had passed since the conversation with Courtney in the cafeteria. I still remained unsure of what exactly had gotten into her, in all honesty. I didn't even know if I could consider the two of us friends. She seemed to unpredictable. I knew that I had to be fair on her, though. I hadn't yet got to know her enough to start making assumptions. All I knew was that whatever text she had received, when the two of us had been sat in the cafeteria, made her upset.

The weather was quite mild on the grounds of the school, so I went to sit upon the field and stared up at the cerulean sky above, as the clouds moved. One of them looked kind of like a dolphin, one of my favourite animals. I sat there for a short while until someone came to sit beside me.

"Hey," she said.

I turned to see Courtney and just raised an eyebrow at her.

"Well, aren't you one for warm welcomes?" she asked me, as she looked towards the sky, "Hey! That one looks kind of like a dolphin!" she said.

"That's what I thought!" I said.

Courtney's lips twitched into a smile, as she met my gaze momentarily before looking back towards the sky.

The two of us sat in quiet for a moment as the clouds continued to move past.

I turned back to Courtney then to find that her smile had faded. She stood up again, as a cool expression appeared upon her face.

"I should get going. I have homework to do," she told me.

"Oh, okay," I replied.

Courtney simply saluted me and then walked away.

I decided that it was probably about time I stood up from the hot grass. It was making my butt feel as though it might catch light at any minute.

I got up from where I had been sat and began to make my way to my French class, where I soon met with Emmy.

"Hey!" she told me.

"Hi you," I said.

"Listen, Phoebe, are we okay?" she asked me.

"I don't see any reason why we wouldn't be," I replied.

I cared so much for Emmy. She was my best friend. Nothing could come between us, not even these feelings. So, I had to hide them away from her.

"You know what I mean," she whispered to me, as our teacher walked past the two of us.

"I know and I still say that we're okay," I replied with a sweet smile.

"Okay, good," Emmy replied with a slight expression of relief present upon her face.

After that conversation with her, I turned my attention back to the work in front with me and got on with it for some time until the bell rang out again, and Emmy and I left the room.

"I'm so exhausted. French is so difficile," Emmy said.

I smirked at her.

"C'est pas si mal," I replied.

"I have no idea what you just said," she replied.

"It's not that bad," I told her.

"You're right. It's terrible. How am I supposed to ever understand French if I can't even understand what you just said?" she asked me.

I just pinched the bridge of my nose after she said that.

Emmy and I walked on a short distance before she turned back to look at me with curiosity in her gaze.

"Who are you asking out?" she asked me.

"Honestly, I was so sure. Now, I don't know," I admitted.

"Hmm," Emmy replied.

I didn't get much from that 'hmm', so I just nodded.

"What I mean is that you need to find someone soon. It's part of the deal. You don't back out of our deals," she told me.

"True," I said.

Emmy just smiled in her amusement. I was glad that someone was having fun here because I knew that I wasn't having very much. Each time I talked to Courtney, I ended up becoming more confused. Why did she have to leave so soon?

Maybe she would respond well to good old fashioned bribery, too. Perhaps I needed to purchase some brownies for her.

"Hey, what are you thinking about?" Emmy asked me, with a kind smile upon her face.

"I don't know. All of this," I admitted.

"You're making me feel slightly anxious and I'm not even a part of this. Anyway, the two of us should go to the sports centre. I need to get started on my training," she told me.

"Of course," I agreed.

The two of us walked down the school's corridor, until we reached the sports department. It was there that Emmy went to get changed and I went with her.

I ended up staring down at the slender hands in my lap as she did so.

I knew that Emmy was my friend but it was still awkward.

I supposed this was something I was simply going to have to get used to. That being said, I really did wish that the weird butterfly flutters in my heart and stomach would go away. They weren't at all fair.

"Are you okay, Phoebs?" she asked me.

"Huh? Yeah," I replied, "Do you want to go and get some coffee after training?" I inquired.

Emmy grinned at that and it made my heart melt.

"Yeah! I would love to," she told me.

"Alright then," I replied, "I thought it would make you feel a little better."

I tended to be pretty good at guessing what people needed.

Emmy and I made our way out of the changing room, once Emmy had changed into her white top and blue shorts. We walked on for a short while and met up with Ryder who had a grin upon his face.

"Let's get started on training!" he said with excitement evident in his voice.

"Okay!" Emmy said, as her cheeks pinkened slightly.

Wait a minute...what was going on here? Emmy never blushed. Now, all of a sudden she was doing it around Ryder? Maybe I didn't even need to worry about the whole Courtney thing, after all.
