Chapter Fourteen- A Change in Plans
I was watching the television with Dan as Tom called people from the other room. Timber was lying down in between Dan and me with his head in my lap.
Dan had the celebrity news channel on. It bored me because they were talking about if Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were a couple. Dan on the other hand thought it was hilarious. And well I didn't understand it at first but then I realized that Robert Pattinson play Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. That must have something to do with it.
"Okay change in plans" Tom said walking back into the room.
"What's up?" Dan asked turning the television off.
"Well the party is going to be tomorrow, because no one wants to come today"
"Whatever" Dan said turning the TV back on.
"But" Tom said annoyed that Dan had interrupted him "Emma's going to come and stay the night"
I jumped up causing Timber to growl at me, but I just looked at Tom. "She's really coming!?"
"Yeah she said she missed you"
I smiled.
Dan turned off the TV and walked into the kitchen.
"When is she going to be here?" I asked Tom.
"Geeze Cas you look like a kid on Christmas morning chill out, she'll be here in a little while. Now I'm going to go pick up some pizzas'"
"Can I come?" I asked. I desperately needed to get out of this house for a while.
He looked at me weirdly. "You want to come?"
"Yeah if that's okay"
"Yeah of course, come on" he said as he walked towards the garage. I followed quickly behind.
"Dan was going to go get food!" Tom yelled.
You could faintly hear a mumbled 'whatever' from the kitchen.

When Tom opened the garage door I was a little surprised to see a small car like mine infront of us. I had expected that Dan would have a big nice sports car, because well it's just Dan. But apparently not.
I walked to the passenger side and got in.
Once he backed out of the drive way I asked "So what happened to your car?"
"I told you I killed it, it's gone"
"Gone like gone gone?"
"Gone as in dead not coming back to life, not in my possession gone"
I just laughed.
"It's really not that funny"
"Well when are you getting a new one?"
"I don't know probably soon"
"Hmmm" I said looking out of the car window.
Then 'in my head' came on the radio.
I immediately turned it up and started singing along.
"I see you all over me in my head..." then it changed to something I didn't recognize.
"Hey! That was a good song"
"My car my radio"
"Technically its Dan's car" I sad as I slumped in my seat.
"Well look who's the smart blonde" he said pinching my cheek. Which sent electricity through my veins.
I shooed his hand away. "Your a blonde too you know"
He just rolled his eyes.
He pulled into a place that looked anything but a pizza shop. It looked like it hadn't been inspected in five years and you could see the workers through the window and they didn't look pleasant.
"Don't give that look, I know it doesn't look very inviting but the pizza is amazing"
"I hope your right about this" was all I said as I got out of the car.
Tom had slipped his sun glasses on even though it was barley light out anymore. Once we had gotten inside I could smell the aroma of sauce and cheese and spices. But I also smelt Tom because I cowardly hid behind him. The guy at the counter looked like he should be held captive, with the tattoos all over his arm and face and how his teeth were partly rotted. It gave me an unwelcomed shiver.

"Felton" Tom said to the guy who disappeared.
Tom looked down at me and laughed. "Are you scared?"
"No" I said but then ducked behind him because the guy came back and grabbed something then left again.
"Liar" he said.
"Well he's making me uncomfortable" I complained.
"He is perfectly safe" Tom assured.
"I'd rather stay on the safe side"
"Suit yourself" was all he said.
The creepy guy came back and handed Tom three pizzas and Tom paid with a credit card. Then I quickly scrambled out of there and back into the car.
I took a deep breath when he started the car and said "note to self never go with Tom to get pizzas ever again"
"Really you overreacted"
"Well I could have screamed and ran away" I said trying to make my cowardly scene seem less cowardly.
"Yeah okay whatever you say"
"Do you know why Dan was laughing at the TV earlier?"
"I didn't look what was on the television?" he said relaxed as he drove with one hand, while his other hand layed on the arm rest.
"It was talking about Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart"
"Oh Dan thinks the expressions Rob makes are hilarious"
"Why?"
"Because it always looks like Rob is uncomfortable. He is a really reserved and shy person"
"Well you would know"
"Eh not really I only met him a couple of times, it's not like we were great friends"
"Still..."
"Still I would know him more than you" he smiled at me and brushed my hair back. I smiled back instantly.
We got back to the house before Emma came but just barely.
As we walked through the back door the front door rang and I ran to open it.
Once it was open it revealed Emma with her hair lighter than normal and sunglasses resting on top of her head. She was in a really cute black top with dark skinny jeans on and flip flops. She had her purse and a small bag in one hand and her phone in the other. And she practically screamed "Cassie!!" and ran up and hugged me. I instantly hugged back.
"I missed you!" she said "you didn't call me enough"
"Sorry I missed you too though"
She rolled her eyes.
"Come on well put your stuff up in my room"
I lead her up the stairs and into my room where she through her stuff on my bed and asked "hows it going"
"Much better since you guys are back"
"Aw" she blinked rapidly "I'm touched"
I laughed as we headed back down the stairs.
"Where are the guys?" Em asked
"In the kitchen probably Tom and I just went to get pizzas"
"Yummy" she said licking her lips as we entered the kitchen. I just laughed at her urgency.
I wasn't that hungry so I only had about a piece in a half and some water. While they had some beer's and ate more than me. They told me about how it was on the set and such, I instantly caught on to all their inside jokes by the time Dan asked.
"Who's up for a swim?"

NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/

The Other - a (man) called Ted
A figure, large and present through time in ways most would not understand. Seemingly uncaring about all except his own principles, the one we refer to as the Other (for legitimate reasons, lest some accidentally call upon his old name), finds his way through life. Though refusing to claim the title himself, this (immortal)'s projects have begun to leave him behind, awaiting some accident to move him back into the world. - - - - - - Initially intended to be a novella, then a project to keep me sane in busy times IRL, this will be considered the roughest of drafts. Also, IRL may prevent me from regular updates after the backlog is done. Tags with a grain of salt, items may be mentioned briefly in story so far, or in chapters already written but not published. Content warnings just in case. Some perspective switching in the first several chapters. Legitimately though, in the first chapters an explanation is provided for referencing to the MC as 'the Other.'
