《Haurutsuki: Beautiful Snow》7. Mist Meets Leaf

Miyuki stood with her back towards her brothers. She panted heavily as the smell of burning flesh continued to taint the air. “Miyuki, you-” Katsu’s disbelief was cut short as she abruptly turned to face him, “Katsu, the merchant!” she instructed. He was slightly taken aback, “Oh!” he exclaimed. “Use your Paralysis Orb and get moving.” she stressed. “Right!” he nodded and immediately created one in his hand before harshly throwing it to where the merchant was escaping. It ran off to the side, chasing after him.
Ryuu then shakily walked towards his sister, “You… You both killed them.” Miyuki turned to see his shaken state. She ran over and hugged him for dear life, “I know. We’re sorry. But this is the Ninja way.” Ryuu stood stunned in her embrace. Just then, Obito ran into the scene, “Hey, you!” Miyuki let go of her brother and turned to see him pointing at them. “Hmm?” she questioned curiously at the new boy. “Hand over the intel and surrender. For my name is Obito Uchiha, ninja of the Hidden Leaf and future Hokage!” he declared. “…” Miyuki was taken aback. “Heh?” even Ryuu had snapped out of his trauma at the sudden declaration. “Intel?” Miyuki asked, turning to Ryuu. He shrugged at his own loss.
Meanwhile, Minato and the others spotted the green orb whizz passed them and looked to where it was heading. It flew straight to the merchant, entering his backside, completely unaware of its presence. Then Katsu ran passed them. Sensing their presence, he looked to the side as he ran and met with Minato’s eyes before looking away and running on. Katsu raised a hand sign to his chin, and the merchant deadpanned in sudden paralysis.
The merchant was stunned. As the bull rode on, he couldn’t stop himself from falling over onto the ground and getting ridden over by the side wheels of the wagon. He screamed through his teeth, too paralysed by Katsu’s Jutsu to even open his mouth. “Kakashi, protect Obito. Rin follow me.” Minato instructed. “Hai!” the two nodded, and while Kakashi charged on ahead, Minato and Rin split off to chase after Katsu and the cargo.
Obito was infuriated by their lack of acknowledgement and burst out in anger, “Oi! Quit looking at each other and focus on me! I’m your opponent! Now hand over the intel!” he stomped about in place. Miyuki narrowed her eyes at his words, and immediately shot a senbon at him. Obito deadpanned at the sensation of the needle grazing his cheek before it stabbed into the ground behind him. He stopped his tantrum to put a hand to his cheek. Blood spilling out from his small, fresh cut. His eyes went wide as it met the hooded girl’s glare. She stood in pose after throwing it and said, “That was your only warning.”
‘Guys, I got incoming. Help!’ Katsu communicated. After their initial surprise at hearing Katsu’s voice in their heads, Miyuki turned to her brother, “Ryuu.” He nodded, “On it!” He said, immediately dashing off to the side to go save his brother. “Oi! Where do you think you're-” but before Obito could finish his retort, Miyuki instinctively fired three more needles at him. On the verge of chasing her brother, she aimed for his side. But the senbon never reached its intended target.
In that same moment, Kakashi appeared in front of Obito. With a kunai in hand and his quick reflexes, he managed to successfully avert each senbon away from Obito. “Kakashi?” Obito gasped in disbelief. “Go. I’ll take care of her.” Kakashi replied without turning to face him. Obito narrowed his eyes in determination, “Hai!” he nodded and with that, dashed off into the mist. Miyuki narrowed her eyes at the silver-haired Jonin, knowing he was the reason the other had escaped.

Meanwhile, before Ryuu could get to Katsu’s aid, a kunai whizzed by his shoulder, ‘Looks like I got company guys.’ He told Miyuki and Katsu as he turned around to see Obito running towards him, shurikens in hand. Ryuu dodged them all with ease before the two came face-to-face, “I don’t want to fight unless I have to.” Ryuu told him. “Yeah, well. In that case, I’ll make you!” Obito declared as he flung a punch. Ryuu dodged with the side of his head. He then tried for an upper cut, but Ryuu blocked it with his arms before jumping back. Obito was annoyed. “Tch! This will bring me one step closer to becoming the Hokage, so stand and fight!” He demanded. Ryuu smirked under his hood, pleased with his opponent's persistence. He lowered his guard, “Hn. Well, in that case...” he began lifting off his hood, “My name is Ryuu Haurutsuki, the last-born son to the Head of the Haurutsuki Clan. I will be honoured to stand and fight you.” He grinned as he showed reveal his face. Obito grinned back, “Well then, let’s fight!” And with that, the two began clashing in combat.
Kakashi widened his stance and raised his kunai, ready to take on the hooded figure. ‘Katsu get away if you can and disappear into the mist. We’re low on chakra and need your Orbs to help out with the fight.’ Miyuki communicated as she stood staring at the shrouded Kakashi before her.
‘Already on it.’ Katsu replied as he had made the appropriate hand sign and thickened the mist with the Hidden Mist Technique. He then concealed his chakra, camouflaging with the mist. He used it to travel safely into the nearby trees. Minato picked up on his disappearance and immediately halted. Rin came to a stop behind him, “Minato-Sensei?” Just then the wild bull and wagon ran into the forest, causing it to crash into the sides of the trees. The bull insisted on pulling through and carried on. “We’ll have to deal with him later. That bull is going to drag the wagon into ANBU Execution territory. Rin go see to the merchant. Make sure his alright and tie him down for interrogation. I’ll go after the bull and join the others as soon as I can.” And with that, Minato flashed forward into the mist, leaving Rin to process his words before she too, charged on.
Minato dashed right passed the merchant on the ground and leapt into the forest, avoiding the splintered wood and supplies that had fallen out the wagon in the process. As he ran deeper into the forest, he soon caught sight of the frantic bull and wagon, the only problem being, that they were hanging in the air. They were caught in a suspended net above ground. “Well, what do we have here.” Minato clenched his teeth at the sound of the new voice. “You’re not here escaping the Hidden Mist.” The voice continued. It was an ANBU Hunter of the Hidden Mist. Minato narrowed his eyes up at the snow-covered trees. A nervous sweat drop hung at seeing himself suddenly surrounded by ANBU Executioners. “Should we apprehend him and take him to the Mizukage?” another asked. “Nah. Let’s have some fun with him before we kill him.” the first replied.
While Minato had an army of ANBU to deal with, Rin ran through the mist until she came upon the still paralyzed merchant. She gasped and quickly bent over him to check him over. His arm and leg were ridden over and wounded, while his side ached in a pain he couldn’t articulate. He tried to chase her off through his gritted teeth since Katsu’s Orb was still in effect. She only smiled, “Don’t worry. I’m here to help.” She said, before going back to examining him and then using Medical Ninjutsu to heal his side.

The mist had gotten so thick from Katsu’s Jutsu that Miyuki could barely make out her opponent. She bit her lip from underneath her hood, ‘How are we going to make it out of this alive?’ her thoughts drifted on, when suddenly, ‘Focus Miyuki! Ryuu’s doing fine on his own, and I’m safe in the- Watch out!’ Katsu warned. Just in time too. Miyuki instinctively raised a kunai from her pouch to guard herself and was instantly met with the harsh clash of an attacking kunai. Kakashi, in a sudden burst of speed, silently charged in for a frontal attack. He glared at his hooded opponent, unable to make out her face through the fog and shadow covering her face. Miyuki held her stance as the two fought for dominance between their two kunai, when suddenly they both leapt back. As Kakashi pulled away, he made hand signs and Miyuki took this time to create a Water Clone and halt her movements. Sliding her hand across the ground in front of her. She looked up just in time to see Kakashi slam his hands down in the far distance, “Earth Style: Mud Wave!” he announced. She gasped as she saw the large wave of shaken earth heading towards her. Her Water Clone made quick work of acrobatics, lifting her up and allowing the original to jump higher into the air. When the wave hit, her Water Clone disappeared in a splash. While she remained flying upwards, completely unharmed.
‘That was close.’ She realised. ‘Miyuki, 6 o’clock!’ Katsu warned. Instinctively she twisted her body in mid-air and delivered an air kick. She made contact with the side of Kakashi’s head, when suddenly POOF! He disappeared into smoke. ‘What? A Shadow Clone?’ she realised as she began descending from the sky.
‘Another at 2 o’clock!’ Katsu warned, and she spun in time to block a clone’s uppercut. Kakashi’s clone glared, and Miyuki abruptly grabbed his wrist, twisted it, raised his arm over his own head and pulled him into her chest in a choke hold. She then raised her knees behind him and used it to press into his back before finally falling onto the ground. Using him to cushion the fall. The clone disappeared under her knees, and a third clone immediately attacked her with a kunai. She narrowly dodged it. The sound of cloth ripped in the process. Though he had missed her head, he managed to slash through the side of her red hood. Her eyes widened as she felt her hair escaping the side of her hood, ‘He’s fast.’ The clone then proceeded to attack her, but she bent over backwards and used her momentum to kick him with both legs as he tried to come at her again. The clone’s kunai fell, taken aback by the two-footed kick. She sprung up from her hands back onto her feet.
Just then she heard oncoming shuriken and grabbed the clone by the belt over his chest. She pulled him in to shield her as the shuriken reached them. Several thuds were heard as the shuriken hit the clone’s back. ‘Katsu, where is he?’ Miyuki asked hastily. ‘I’m helping little brother deal with Fireballs too, be patient.’ Katsu retorted. Just then more shurikens flew in from the side, and she gasped in realisation before dragging the clone she still had in time to shield her again. However, this time one managed to graze her arm, ‘Katsu!’ she demanded. ‘1 o’clock!’ he hastily answered.
The clone then disappeared from her grip into a puff of smoke, and she used both hands to quickly grab several needles from her belt and hurriedly shoot them at her 1 o’clock. She watched as they faded into the thick mist, and heard as a few hit something before what sounded like a body, collapsed onto the ground. ‘Yes!’ she mentally cheered before sprinting into the mist to find the original Kakashi.
Only when she arrived, she was met with the sight of a fallen log. Her eyes shot open in surprise, ‘A Substitution Jutsu!?’
Just then, the real Kakashi emerged behind her from underground, and delivered a hard side kick to her side in her blind spot. Miyuki hit and skidded across the snow, but was able to make a quick recovery. She used her hand to halt her actions, drifting to a stop. She bounced back up to charge in for hand to hand combat with the real Kakashi. He managed to dodge every one of her taijutsu moves but was unable to land a single one on her himself. He didn’t care for seeing her face as they fought, but more and more of her wavy black hair began to seep through the looser hood while in their hand-to-hand combat. He knew if this fight didn’t end soon, it would compromise their intel gathering mission. As the fist fight drew on, both their movements became more predictable to the one another. Both had used a large amount of chakra in the fight as well, and their blows became sloppy and less effective. It wasn’t long before Kakashi was able to grab one of her punches, much to her surprise. “You’re getting in the way of my mission. Surrender now, and I won’t have to kill you.” Kakashi bluntly said. “Tch.” Miyuki responded, ‘Arrogant much.’ She thought.
Fuelled by his arrogant words, with her free hand, she grabbed a kunai from her pouch and attempted to stab his shoulder, “Ha!” she exclaimed as she thrust forward. However, Kakashi had his own kunai readied and blocked her with ease. “Then you leave me no choice.” Kakashi sneered. She furrowed her eyebrows in annoyance, which he couldn’t make out under her still present hood, and began to push back against his kunai. Kakashi then pushed back with greater force, “It’s over.” He glared. “Not yet.” She grunted out as she pressed back against his blade. Her confidence increased as she began dominating his kunai, until…
Her tensed arm gave in and bent in at a moment of weakness. She gasped in shock. Her chakra was depleting, and fast! After all, she had just killed six men and was now battling a Jonin from the Hidden Leaf. Kakashi took advantage and immediately used his free hand to grab her at the throat and push her forward. Using the weight of his lifted knee, he pushed her down onto her back, causing her to fall onto the ground. “Mph!” she grunted out in pain from the harsh landing. She fell with the back of her head hitting the ground, causing her eyes to shut. Kakashi released his tight grip on her throat as he sat on her stomach. He raised his hands in the air, gripping to his kunai. She opened her eyes and raised her, her hood coming off and revealing her face. She stared up in terror at the enemy about to pierce her heart. Her final thoughts being, ‘It’s all over.’
Katsu snapped out of his Sensory mode and shouted out in horror at her last thought, “MIYUKI!”

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
