《Son of Nico Robin》Chapter 17 Bridge Battle

The strawhats stared at the now burning Enies Lobby. A report had just came in stating that the Franky Family had been wiped out on the island. Franky was left broken at their deaths, but he had to stay strong because the fight was far from over. Back on the ship, the others were in disbelief of what was going on.
Nami: Is it really okay for people to do so easily like this.
Robin: The marines don't see people, only the image of an island on a map. To them they are merely erasing an island off a map. This is what a buster call is.
Kai: Do you think Luffy is going to be okay.
Luffy was in the middle of a heated battle against Rob Lucci. The battle had destroyed most of the tower and each other, however both were still going all out.
Chopper: Don't worry, there's a reason Luffy is fighting Lucci.
Nami: He always seems to know which enemy he has to fight, like an instinct of his.
The silence was then broken by cannon fire, which hit the tower. All five of the war ships were now heading right for them. The pirates all watched as the massive vessels surrounding. They readied themselves, for they knew what was about to happen. However despite this, it didn't stop some of them for cheering on Luffy.
Marine: LISTEN UP, TO THOSE RANKED LIEUTENANT AND BELOW, STAY BEHIND! TO THE 200 ELITE CAPTAINS, GO AND TAKE THEM!
All 200 captains jumped of the ships and landed down on the bridge. Zoro, Usopp, and Franky began fighting them, but there were too many for them all to handle. The captains managed to get past them and started running for the ship.
Nami: You guys stay here, I'll hold them off.
Nami charged at the marines, the end of her staff started to emit lightning.
Nami: Thunder Charge-Swing Arm!
Nami swung her staff, the marines in front got zapped by it and fell to the ground.
Nami: Thunder Ball!

She took one of the spheres from her staff and threw it into the air, a cloud began to form. When the captains looked up at it, they were struck from lightning from the cloud. To say the least, Nami was impressed with what she had done. However as quickly as she defeated them, another group had just arrived.
Marine: Lets get her!
They all leapt in the air, ready to strike her down, however someone stopped them.
Kai: THUNDER BIRD SCREECH!
Kai shot them all down with his lightning. Nami looked up and saw the now transformed Kai.
Nami: Kai is that you?
Kai grinned.
Kai: Yeah, pretty cool right?
Nami: Definitely comes in handy I'll say.
The marines then turned their attention to Kai.
Marine: What the hell is that thing?
Marine2: Who cares, just shoot it.
They all pointed their guns at Kai. Before they could pull the triggers, arms suddenly appeared and started to snap them, rather violently. As they fell to the ground, Robin appeared.
Robin: Attempting to harm my son is a fatal mistake.
She then turned to Nami.
Robin: You forget, we're part of the Strawhats to. If you fight, then we fight to.
Their victory was short lived, as even more marines came flooding in. The trio went on, knocking down marine after marine after marine. But with so many enemies, they soon found themselves surrounded.
Marine1: Man they are giving us a hard time.
Marine2: We just have to avoid those thunderbolts.
Said marine looked up and saw another cloud forming.
Marine1: Quick, everyone disp...
Suddenly everyone marine was tapped on the shoulder. They turned around, only to get smacked. While they were all distracted, Nami took the chance to strike.
Nami: Do it now Kai!
Kai flew up into the air and zapped the cloud, causing it to grow rapidly. The marines could only stare at their incoming doom. Then lightning came raining down, it was so powerful that it blew everything away. When the smoke cleared, only the pirates were left standing.

Nami: You know Kai, you're quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Kai giggled.
Kokoro: Hey good job you guys! Looks like you took care of everyone down here, why don't you go up there and help everyone else!
Nami: Alright, you guys look after Chopper!
And so, they ran up the steps to help their allies. Kai flew through the air, looking for more targets. But then something came crashing into him, knocking him down onto one of the warship decks. When Kai got back up, he saw a marine there wearing a mask.
Sharinguru: I, marine captain Sharinguru hereby place you, Nico Kai, under arrest. I suggest you surrender now.
Kai: Like heck I will. THUNDER BIRD...
Sharinguru came rushing at Kai, faster than he could've anticipated. He crashed right into him, sending him flying into some cargo. When Kai got back up, Sharinguru was circling him. Thats when the young boy saw his limbs spinning.
Sharinguru: I've eaten the Wheel-Wheel fruit, granting me the powers to make my limbs spin like wheels.
Kai tried to take off again, but Sharinguru slammed into him. The attack sent him over the side of the boat, luckily Kai managed to take flight. However, the marine captain drove up the mast and launched off it. The result was he landed right on top of Kai, sending him once again crashing into the boat. Sharinguru landed near him and picked Kai up, who had now turned back into a human.
Sharinguru: See, that wasn't so hard. Hard to believe everyone else had trouble.
Two wings sprouted from Kai's back and touched Sharinguru. Initially confused, Sharinguru was then electrocuted. The moment he let go of Kai, the boy took off into the air.
Sharinguru: Why you little!
He charged at Kai, but he was ready too.
Kai:
Kai released more lightning than he had before, enveloping the area in light. The force of the attack ended up destroying the top deck of the warship. Seeing his enemy defeated, Kai quickly left. However, fatigue started to set in. It has been some time since Kai last ate, to make matters worse he had been fighting a war. He tried to keep going, but his body gave in. He started falling before crashing down on the bridge.
Marine: I got you now kid!
A pair of arms sprouted from his back and snapped his neck. Robin quickly ran over to Kai and held him in her arms.
Robin: Kai are you alright?
Kai: Yeah...just tired.
Robin let out a sigh of relief. Nami then joined up with them.
Nami: Hey what's going on?
Robin: It's alright, he's just exhausted.
Nami: I don't blame him, he fought hard. Unfortunately, I'm starting to feel the same way.
While they were distracted, marines with guns circled them, ready to open fire. Before they could do anything, a loud trumpet was heard. The marines looked over and saw an elephant come running right at them. As the marines yelled, they got trampled over. That elephant was Funkfreed.
Nami: Whoa, what is that?
Robin: It's Funkfreed, Spandam's elephant sword.
Nami: If he belonged to Spandam, what is he doing here?
Robin: Kai stole him.
Nami: Well at least we have someone else on our side.
Nami and Funkfreed continued to fight off the marines as Robin held onto Kai. Despite their best efforts, they were being pushed back. Luckily, a loud explosion rang throughout the battlefield. Everyone turned their attention back onto the tower, which had now crumbled. From the wreckage, a man could be seen.
Marine: THIS IS A REPORT TO ALL SHIPS! MR ROB LUCCI OF CP9 HAS JUST BEEN DEFEATED BY THE PIRATE STRAW HAT LUFFY!
In spite of everything that had been going on, the Strawhat crew couldn't help but feel relief that their captain had won. They had did it, the Strawhat pirates have defeated the legendary CP9.
Luffy: ROBIN! WE ARE GOING BACK TOGETHER!
At those words, Robin couldn't help but tear up.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
