《My Mate the Wanderer》25. Perks

"I wish I could tell you how but I know very little about this life also. Heck, until a few days ago, when I met Tyler, I though I was normal." I said with a light chuckle.
"Speaking of which what is that guy to you anyways?" Nate asked while furrowing his brow at me.
I could feel my face redden at the thought of telling my brother the gravity of our relationship.
"Just tell him little one." I could hear Tyler say from off in the distance.
"How about you do it you eavesdropper." I said with mild annoyance.
"Do what?" Nate asked cluelessly.
"I was talking to Tyler. He's a ways off that way." I said as I pointed in Tyler's general direction.
"Alright, and you could hear him?" He asked in confusion.
"It's one of the wolfy perks, along with all of your other senses being heightened." I said with a hint of excitement that surprised me.
I actually felt like now that I had someone who was also new to this world, that I could gradually learn to accept and maybe even enjoy all of this.
"I'm just going to be frank with you Nathan, and I'm sure you'll have questions about it too, but Tyler is my mate."
"Ya, I'm going to need a little bit more of an explanation then that 'cus my mind is going to some weird places because of the term alone."
"Well," I hesitantly started "a mate is kinda like a life partner. It's someone that was made for you."
I watched as Nate's face twisted in mixed emotions.
"Bree, you barely know the guy."
"I understand that, but it feels right. Almost as though he was always supposed to be a part of my life." I said as my face reddened.
"Well, just be careful. You don't know anything about his past he could be some psycho for all you know."
I laughed at the thought of Tyler having a dark past; he is way to nice to even consider such a thing.
"Thanks for your concern, but I think I'll be fine." I said as I started walking towards the school.
"Lets go back to Tyler's house. Him and I have plans to train, so maybe you could join us." I said over my shoulder.
Nate and I exchanged small talk as we made our way to Tyler's car with him following a few yards behind us.
"Nate, I need you to not tell Mom and dad about this. I don't think this is the life that they would have wanted."

I watched Nate solemnly nod his head.
I could tell that he also felt that news like this would destroy their world.
"It's probably better that way anyways." Tyler said in a consoling way. "I don't even know how the shift would affect and aged persons body. You mom could potentially die from the first shift or not be able to keep her wolf in check."
The thought of something happening to my mom gave me a chill.
"So when do I get to meet my wolf?" Nate asked trying to change the heavy conversation topic.
"Well, a persons first shift is usually on the moon before their 16th birthday." Tyler stated.
Nate hummed in approval.
I'm happy that he will take to this life better then I will, but I couldn't help but feel a little bit envious of his open mindedness.
I stuffed down my jealousy and continued back to the school.
Once we were back at the deserted parking lot we all hopped back into Tyler's car and drove towards his house.
During the drive I noticed that my limbs felt tight and hot which was likely from yesterday's training.
I groaned at the thought of having to exert myself again once we got back home.
We drove in silence back to Tyler's with the only noise being the hum of the car as it drove down the winding road.
The car slowed as we pulled in Tyler's driveway and we all got out.
"Nate I think it may be best if you just watch for today so you can understand the power of the wolf." Tyler said stoically. "Why don't you head inside and change so that we can get started, little one."
I nodded in Tyler's direction and climbed the stairs to the house.
Once I had changed into my spandex shorts and a tank top I headed out to the woods to meet up with the guys.
I ran quickly after Tyler's scent as I reflected on the past couple of days.
Who knew that so quickly my life would be changed.
I was suddenly being knocked to the ground by a shirtless Tyler with a grin spread wide across his face.
"You know little one if this were a real fight you could be dead by now. Wolves don't wait for you to be mentally in the fight." He said as he extended his hand down to me to help me up.
I lowly growled at him and I dusted myself off.
"Your one and only goal today is to knock me to the ground. You can use any means you wold like to do so. I ran the perimeter of the area around here with your brother so if you come across his scent you'll know that your at the edge of the fighting area."

"Alright, how long do I have to do so?" I said with concern visible on my face.
I had major doubts that I would even be able to catch Tyler let alone knock him to the ground.
"We go until you can do it. So for your sake I hope you can do it quickly." He said with a hearty chuckle.
I didn't wait for Tyler to prepare himself and lunged at him only for him to sidestep me and tap me on the shoulder as he did so.
I let out a low growl because of his blatant mockery.
I could feel Accalia clawing at my mind so that she could get free to show her mate that we were not to be fooled with.
I pushed her back as I darted into the woods to hopefully take him by surprise.
I ran until I hit one of the boundaries and ran alongside it.
I needed to know the layout of our arena so that I could effectively calculate a good means for attacking him.
I quietly trekked throughout the woods and I looked for any signs of Tyler.
After a few minutes I caught his scent and followed the trail.
I could feel my heart slow as I hunted diligently for my mate.
A crack of a branch rippled through the air in the direction of Tyler's path.
Accalia pushed to the front of my mind to aid me.
I slowly stepped forward but could feel Accalia pulling me back.
I knew that I needed to trust her instincts so I held fast as we took cover behind a tree.
We observed our mate as he sauntered through a worn path through the densely wooded area.
We watched as he looked over his shoulder towards us and gave us a playful smile and then darted deeper into the woods.
We didn't hesitate, that smile was a challenge to us that we were glad to accept, so we quickly followed in suit.
I could feel a low rumble in our chest as the excitement of the hunt sunk in.
I let Accalia come forward more as we caught up to Tyler.
Tyler was leading us back in the direction of where we had started, but I wasn't going to let him have his way so easily.
I came up behind him on his flank to push him deeper into the woods but he effortlessly maneuvered us so that we would continue on his intended path.
A feeling of unease settled over us that let us know that we needed to try to get him here before he got us into an unfortunate position.
I lunged at Tyler but he moved out of our way and continued onward with a chuckle.
I could feel my blood boil at the mockery our mate was aiming at us.
I could tell that Accalia was clawing at my mind trying to free us of our skin but I held her back with all of my power.
Tyler led us to a clearing near our starting point and quickly stopped in the middle of it.
We cautiously approached and circled him.
We could feel our blood boiling as we stared at him.
We wanted to win.
We wanted him to know that he can't toy with us.
I wanted to taste his blood.
I felt pressure in my fingers but I ignored the unpleasant feeling.
Tyler spoke but I couldn't hear him, all that I could hear was my heartbeat in my ears.
I was filled with rage as I looked upon him, a rage that I had never felt anything like before.
I quickly stepped towards him and tried to kick his feet from under him, but he gracefully stepped out of my range.
I could now feel the pressure in my finger change into sharp pains but I fought through it.
Tyler suddenly stilled and spoke, but his words didn't reach my ear.
I let out a low growl as I looked at him, and his face contorted into an expression of worry.
I leaped in his direction and tried to grab at him but missed.
Suddenly I was face down on the ground with Tyler pinning my arms down.
I thrashed underneath him as pain exploded in my back and mouth.
I watched as Nathan emerged from the tree line and ran towards me with a look of alarm.
I could hear someone faintly calling my name but it was being overwhelmed by the sound of my heart beating in my ears.
I could now tell that Accalia wasn't scratching at my mind.
In fact I couldn't feel her at all.
