《My Mate the Wanderer》16. Wolfy Hearing

I was jolted awake by a loud banging noise that caused me to bolt upright in bed.

My hands shot up to my ears to cover them from the loud roaring and banging.

My head felt like it was going to explode from the sheer volume of the house.

I whimpered to myself which made me wince because it was almost as though I was hooked up to an amplifier that was turned up to 11.

"Tyler," I squeaked out "something is wrong with me!"

I didn't know if he could even hear me but I couldn't yell for him in fear that my ears would start bleeding from my own voice.

"Aubree? Are you alright in there?" He said in a voice so loud that a pain shot through my head.

I pressed my hands more tightly over my ears as I bit back a whimper.

I didn't move because of the fear that the noises would only get louder if I did.

A few seconds went by before a deafening squealing noise ripped through the air.

My eyes shot up to the source of the noise as my heart rate rapidly increased readying me for fight or flight.

Before I could process it Tyler was sitting on the edge of the bed with his hands on the side of my face.

His deep brown eyes were filled with quiet consideration as he very obviously breathed in my scent.

"Focus on my voice little one. Only listen to my words and tune out all of the surrounding noises." He said in a calm and hushed voice.

I felt enthralled by the silvery tone of the words rolling of of his tongue.

I never knew that a voice could be so sultry yet also so sweet.

I took a long breath inwards to calm my frantic heart and slowly lowered my hands as the obtrusive noises faded.

"What in the world was that?" I sighed out.

"That, little one, was you wolfy hearing in all of its glory." He lightly chuckled out. "Why don't you come into the kitchen for breakfast and we can talk about it."

I groaned as I flopped backwards into the bed and pulled the sheets above my head.

Tyler let out a laugh as he stood up to leave the room.

"Looks like I'm going to have to eat all of these pancakes and bacon by myself."

I groaned and rolled myself out of bed because I knew I would have some major regrets if I didn't get some food in me.

As we walked into the kitchen area I saw a large mound of pancakes and bacon sitting on the counter.

Tyler quickly grabbed me a plate and pilled food onto it.

Once we were sitting at the kitchen table we happily dug into our food.

"That this morning was some of the changes I said you would be experiencing throughout the next couple of days." Tyler stated. "I can teach you how to use it to your advantage. That and I plan on starting you on combat training today."

"Combat training? Why do I need to learn to fight?" I said curiously.

"This isn't the world you used to live in. In our world people don't tend to mess around by talking it out, we fight it out, it tends to deliver a strong point." He said as a sly smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "That and it will help bring your were instincts to the surface."

"Lovely." I groaned out.

After Tyler and I finished our breakfast we cleaned up and changed so that we could head outside to do whatever he had planned for us today.

"Ok, little one, let's start out with a light run for a warm up and then we can start sparring." Tyler said in an authoritative voice.

My legs still ached from yesterday's run, but I was still excited to experience the wind ripping through my hair again.

Tyler quickly took off in the same direction as yesterday as I quickly followed.

As we ran Tyler explained how I can focus my hearing in certain direction and on certain things.

I practiced throughout my run listening for the slight rustles of bird wings and the faint snapping noises of twigs.

Soon enough I was able to tune out unnecessary background noises and focus my hearing on things that could be a potential threat.

Tyler began to slow down when we entered a clearing with dense woods surrounding it.

"Alright Aubree, this is where we will be sparing today. First thing I want to do is have you get in touch with your instincts." He said with a devious smirk

I nodded my head and listened to him intently.

"Stand in the middle here and try to figure out which direction I'll be coming at you from."

With that Tyler took off into the densely crowded woods.

"Wait! How do I do that? What if I can't figure out where your coming from?" I said in a slightly panicked voice.

"You'll just have to wait and find out little one." Tyler said from deep within the woods.

After that everything went silent.

I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck raise up from the impending danger.

I turned around in a circle and tried to look closely at the tree line for any signs of our mate.

I could feel my hand clam up and my heart rate increase, I could feel that I was no more then a second away from being put in my place.

A growl rippled from my throat because of the threat of danger.

I tried to concentrate but my anxiety was getting the best of me.

Before I could realize what had happened I felt the heat of another body against my back and a clawed hand resting gently against my throat.

"You need to feel the location of the danger and listen for changes in that direction, little one." Tyler lightly whispered against my neck before shooting back off into the woods.

I sighed in annoyance, how am I supposed to feel where danger is?

He could at least give me a little instruction.

Again I stood in the middle and swiveled around.

I could hear the snapping of the twigs in the distance so I spun my body in that direction.

Right as I did I knew it was a mistake.

I felt a presence behind me before I felt Tyler's hand on my throat.

"I felt you coming at me this time." I said breathlessly as this tingling sensation shot through my body.

"Good." He said before darting back off into the woods.

We practiced this over and over until I was able to catch his hand every time before he would get his hold on me.

I felt like a wall had been remove between me and Accalia.

I could feel here closer to the front of my mind and could sense her helping me predict Tyler's movements.

It felt like she was much more a part of me, and I was much more willing to accept her.

"You've done really well today. Tomorrow after you get off of school we will practice hand to hand combat."

"Ugh," I groaned. "I had almost forgotten that school starts tomorrow. Shouldn't I skip since all of his is happening?" I tried to say with the most doe eyed expression.

Tyler let out a chuckle. "Nice try little one but you need to go and experience everything in life that you can especially since will be you last first day of high school."

It looks like tomorrow's going to be a long day for me.
