《In Five Years》Chapter 27

"So that's the famous Maddie." I hear a voice say that I don't recognize. I'm too tired to open my eyes, so I keep them shut and bury my face more into the pillow. "I can see why you have it bad for her. Damn."

Cam sighs and I feel the comforter fall back over me again. "Don't get your ass beat." He laughs. "She's just here for the weekend. Sorry if she woke you up last night. I didn't know she was coming."

"I don't care." He shrugs. "Just try to keep it down next time if you plan on fucking anymore. You sounded like a straight up girl last night."

Oh god.

I knew he was being too loud! I tried to get him to be quiet. How embarrassing.

Rather than listen to them discuss our sex life, I blink my eyes open and roll onto my back. Devin and Cam are by the closet. Devin is almost as tall as him, but less muscular. He's got tattoos that completely cover his right arm, and his hair is straight and shoulder length, a mixture of brown and blonde.

"Good morning." Cam's eyes soften when they meet mine, a tiny smile appearing on his lips. "Sleep well?"

Letting out a yawn, I sit up in his bed, still in his sweatshirt from yesterday. I'm so tired still that all I can do is nod my head and look around his dorm room. It looks exactly like it did on FaceTime, but this time I get to see Devin's half. It's much different than Cam's.

Multiple rock bands are splattered across his wall, almost completely covering them, and black seems to be his favorite color. A black comforter, black pillowcase, black lamp, black side table. It's a lot of black.

"Devin." He smiles when I look at him again.

"It's nice to finally meet you, Maddie. Wish I could stay and chat, but my band has a thing later. We have to practice."

"You're in a band?" I ask. "That's so cool. What kind of music do you play?"

Devin and Cam exchange grins before he says, "death metal."

Oh, well I guess the black makes sense now.

"Cool. I don't really know much about metal, but it sounds fun."

"Yeah, it is." Devin says. "If you guys are free then you can come out tonight. We'd love to have you."

He gives us a salute and disappears out the door, leaving Cam and I alone. He looks so damn good without a shirt on, just a towel wrapped around his waist.

"Sorry." He says. "He's a... unique individual. Once you get to know him though he's cool. I was just about to take a shower, but if you're ready to take one too then I can show you where the girls bathroom is."

I nod and get up out of bed, still just in his sweatshirt and my panties from last night. I find his sweatpants and shrug them on, yawning as I do so.

"How are you feeling?" Cam asks, and it's like I forgot all about the reason why I came here to begin with until he just said something.

My dad.

With someone else.

Cheating on my mother.

The images come into my brain one by one, each one hurting more than the first. I came here to forget about this, so that's exactly what I'm going to do.

"I'd rather not talk about it." I finally reply. "I'm here to spend time with you. What did you want to do today?"

"I feel like I should be asking you that, but..." he sighs and scratches the back of his head. "I was thinking I could show you around campus? Maybe grab some lunch afterwards?"

"Perfect." I grin as I grab my toiletry products from my duffel bag, shoving all the negative thoughts to the back of my head.

"And this..." Cam points to the right of us as we turn down another street. "Is Old Main."

Before us is a huge building that looks like the White House or something. It's got huge pillars sprawled out across the front, a ginormous statue that looks like a globe placed in the center of the square. It's so beautiful, and I stand there for a second to take it all in.

"This is the first building of major significance here." He says. "Built in 1867 to be exact."

"Oh, are you a history major now?" I arch a brow up as he takes my hand and swings it back and forth in a childish way.

We've had so much fun today. He showed me everything there is to see, and so far this campus is mind blowing. We snapped some photos together at the big bell, and then we explored the incredible library. He showed me the food hall, his practice field, and while doing all of this we haven't been able to stop smiling.

"No, it's just the only thing I remember being told to me during orientation freshman year."

"Oh, okay." I laugh. "This campus is beautiful though, Cam. Honestly. I can see why your mom loved it so much."

His eyes soften at the mention of her, and I just want to hug the sadness right out of him.

"Yeah, it's been great. Kind of hard to believe I graduate next year. I really wish she could be here, and I know that it's been years, but I just feel like it doesn't get any easier."

I give his hand a tight squeeze, stopping right in front of the statue. "I don't think it's supposed to. I think you just think about them less, but when the memory of them does come back it hurts all the same. She'd be so proud of you."

He smiles down at me, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "I hope so." He finds himself saying, and before I know it he presses my back up against the globe.

"This is probably really old." I say and glance behind me, but I'm unable to remove the smile from my face. "Is there a reason you have me leaning against this, Cam?"

He chuckles and bends down to capture my lips with his, pulling away quickly to say, "you know exactly why I'm leaning you up against this, Mads."

I grab his chin to make him kiss me again, waiting until his tongue finally entwines with mine. His hands run down my sides until they grasp firmly onto my hips, pinning me against the statue.

We stand there in a make out session, not caring whatsoever about the snow, or about how cold it is. It's just us two out here right now since it's still winter break, and I find myself not wanting this to stop. My body feels warm all over. Suddenly I'm not cold at all anymore. My hands aren't numb, my toes aren't ice, all I can feel is him.

"I love you." He pants breathlessly. "I'm in love with you."

"I'm in love with you too." I reply and scan his eyes. "So much, Cam."

The loss of the kiss is agonizing. In seconds my body begins to shiver again. I brought my winter coat, and I'm wearing a hat and mittens too, but it doesn't seem to help.

"Cold?" He asks and wraps an arm around me to try and warm me up. "Come on, let's go get you something to eat."
