Amy March is an angelic 20-year-old with golden curls, is painting a staged scene, along with a few other young artists. It is a classic scene of two young men and a young woman at a picnic, and Amy is rendering it realistically, imitating the 18th and 19th century painters she loved.

She looks at the painting of the young man next to her. He is doing something radically different- the paint is obvious and the colours are bright and un-life-like, space is flattened. It is not meant to be realistic: it is the beginning of modernism.

She looks back at her own piece and realises that she might have missed the moment that she came here to master.

Perhaps she's already past before her time. She continues, working troubled.

Amy rides in an open air carriage with Aunt March, reading a letter from home. Everyone in Paris is out. Aunt March is only happy when she is complaining, and she's in excellent form this morning. It is the place to see and be seen and Amy March is doing both excellently. Aunt March turns to Amy " The decadents have ruined Paris, if you ask me. These French women couldn't lift a hairbrush." Amy doesn't respond. "AMY! I said These French women couldn't lift a hairbrush."Amy finally answer her Aunt March " oh yes! Very true , Aunt March."Aunt March side glares her niece "Don't humour me, girl. What do they write, you're troublemaking family?" Amy doesn't look to happy "Mother doesn't say anything about Beth. I feel I should go back but they all say stay." Aunt March just looked at her. "You can do nothing if you go back. The girl is sick , not lonely." Amy gives her a hard look. Aunt March continues on "And you shouldn't go home until you and Fred Vaughn are properly engaged." A slight blush appears on Amy's face as she puts the letter away. "Yes, and until I've completed all of my painting lessons, of course."Aunt March looks at Amy with a confused expression. " What? oh, yes, yes. Of course.

Amy looks at all the passers-by. She sees a somber young man who's arms are linked with a cheerful young woman, the man is tall and dark and looking down as he walks. The woman on the other hand was short but dark and was talking away to the man who seemed uninterested. Suddenly Amy shouts " STOP THE CARRIAGE! LAURIE! LOTTIE!LAURIE! LOTTIE ! Abandoning her premises, she launches her self out of the carriage and runs, nearly knocking people over. This is Theodore Laurence, and his little sister Charlotte Laurence. Laurie a 26-year-old without a sense of direction, like most 26-year-olds, and his 19 nearly 20-year-old sister who was travelling with her older brother and grandfather for one reason and one reason only. Amy grabs Laurie into a hug and then grabs Lottie joyously and un self-consciously, something that did not go unnoticed by Laurie. Laurie was the first to speak with a smile so big " AMY! You're so, grown up!" Laurie could hardly believe that this little woman standing in front of him was the same little girl that he had last seen in Boston. Amy tore her eyes away from Lottie's face to look at Laurie " you wrote you'd come to the hotel!" Laurie put on a little smirk as he looked down at the blonde haired March " We looked for you and couldn't find, you anywhere!" Lottie stood to the side watching her brother talk to the woman she has grown up with and admired her. Amy March had grown an awful lot since they last saw each other, Lottie looked down on herself and looked back at the youngest March, Amy was taller than her although when she thought about it she always had been, her hair hid behind a hat and Leigh had to stop herself asking if she wore pigtails still or if she had stopped Lottie had always loved Amy's pigtails. Amy looked over at the small brunette "you didn't look hard enough!" Amy smiled at Lottie " I didn't know you would be here I mean I heard Laurie was travelling with your grandfather but not you." Lottie just smiled " well I couldn't simply stay in Concord while he went travelling around Europe and besides Beth told me you only get to travel to Europe twice in your life if your lucky so why not travel it with Laurie and grandfather." Lottie continued on with the previous topic " Maybe we just didn't recognise you, you've become even more beautiful." Amy made a face of sadness but quickly covered it up " please don't." Lottie's face quickly changed expressions to guilt and sorrow . Laurie noticed this and spoke again clearing his throat " I thought you liked that sort of thing!" Amy looked at him "No. where's your grandfather?" Looking back at Lottie who refused to take her eyes off of the ground. "Still in Germany. It's just the two of us, travelling and having fun or in Lottie's case going to Art Galleries and concerts or sitting and reading or even parties for dancing ." Amy laughed teasing Laurie " and drinking and gambling and flirting.... and Lottie still into all of the same things I see." Laurie laughed pointing his index finger " don't tell your mother" Amy smiled " are you chasing some young girl across Europe?" Laurie's face darkened "no." Amy dropping her playfulness looked at Laurie "I'm.... I couldn't believe Jo turned you down. I'm sorry." Laurie was crisp with his response "don't be Amy I'm not". Lottie's head shot up when she heard Aunt March shouting for Amy "AMY! AMY MARCH! YOU COME BACK HERE THIS INSTANT!" Lottie giggles and Amy looks back at her smiling and grabbing her hand " oh Aunt March" Laurie gallops over, jumps into the carriage, kissing her: " Aren't we fine ma'am." Aunt March screams as Amy and Lottie arrive to the carriage. Lottie goes to grab Laurie trying to get him down. "GET HIM OFF OF ME!" But Laurie pulls away from Lottie and kisses Aunt March again grinning but Aunt March simply ignores him " Il faut GO! Allons-y!" Aunt March attempts to get the carriage to leave, and Laurie is thrown out beside Lottie while Amy is thrown in. Amy calls after the Laurence siblings, " come to the New Year's Eve Party! It's a ball and everyone will be there, including Fred- pick me up at the hotel at eight- the Chavain! Dress for festivities! Top hats and silks and your finest dress." Lottie smiles at Amy "we will! I will wear my finest dress and Laurie will wear his finest silk" Lottie links arms with her brother once again as they begin their stroll again except this time it's Laurie talking enthusiastically while Lottie feels her heart drop to her stomach, as Amy looks at them. She turns back to Aunt March smiling "It's Laurie and Lottie" Aunt March simple just looks at the young woman beside her "I know" Amy turns to get one last look at Lottie, She Loves her, as She's always loved her.
