《The Midnight Man》Chapter 15 - Dreams... Or Reality?

"Hello, Sam Golbach!" Said The Midnight Man. Sam gasped.
"We finished the game! You shouldn't be here," Sam replied, holding in his anger.
"Actually, no. You didn't."
"Wait, What?" Sam was in shock. He lost everything to this game, and he didn't even finish it?
"The rules clearly state that the game finishes at exactly 3:33 am."
"Yeah, I know. It felt like we played for days! There's no way we didn't finish it!"
"You were close."
"What do you mean 'we were close'?"
"Look." The Midnight Man pointed to the clipboard next to Sam. Sam picked up the clipboard and found the page with his details.
"What about it?"
"Take a look at what time you arrived at the hospital,"
"No," a tear rolled down Sam's cheek.
"Oh, yes."
"This c-cant be." Sam dropped the clipboard on the floor in shock.
"I'm afraid it is," The Midnight Man had a sinister grin. Sam was admitted to the hospital at 3:32 am. The game finished at 3:33 am, and you couldn't leave your house.
"But, it's not fair!"
"Lifes not fair."
"But you killed my friends! They died for nothing!"
"That's the best part."
"No!" Rage boiled up inside Sam as he clenched his fists and stood up. His body ached and his head spun but he pushed past the pain, determined to make The Midnight Man pay for what he had done. Sam's heart rate increased dramatically as he walked closer and closer to the evil demon in front of him.
"Sam, what are you doing?" The Midnight Man said. Sam gave no response. "Oh, Sam. You know you can't defeat me! I'm a demon! You, you're just a measly, powerless, weak human!" The Midnight Man chuckled.

Suddenly Sam launched himself at The Midnight Man and knocked him to the floor. Sam wrapped his hands around the midnight man's neck and squeezed as hard as he could. The Midnight Man kicked Sam directly in the stomach, making him cough up blood. Sam cried out in pain. The Midnight Man stood up and clamped a hand tightly around Sam's neck. He held Sam close to his face as he spoke.
"You don't scare me, pipsqueak," The Midnight Man whispered into Sam's ear. He threw Sam across the small room and into the concrete wall with such force, that it crumbled. Sam was sitting on the edge of the building, ten stories above the ground. The Midnight Man walked over to Sam.
"Goodnight, Sam." He said as he pushed Sam over the edge. Sam felt weightless as he fell. It seemed like slow motion at first. The cold summer night breeze brushed against his warm face. The moon and the stars shone brightly as the sound of trees rustling in the wind filled Sam's head. Sam then realised what was happening. He was about to die!
"NO! NO! SOMEONE HELP ME! PLEASE!" Sam screamed, waving his limbs around dramatically. He was about halfway to the ground when he heard the terrified screams of doctors, nurses and other patients.
"Sam," said a familiar voice. This voice sounded closer than the others. It sounded clearer. "Sam, can you hear me?" It asked. Sam felt someone shake his shoulders. "Sam?"
Sam opened his eyes. He was surrounded by five worried people. three nurses and two doctors.
"I think you were having a bad dream." One of the nurses said to Sam.
"But The Midnight Man! He was here!"
They all thought he was crazy! But how much of that was a dream? Sam looked around, confused.

"I think you're just hungry. Here, we'll get you some food!" Two of the nurses walked out of the room.
"I'm so sorry, Sam. I have another patient to help." Said one of the doctors, leaving the room.
"I should go with him." Said the other doctor.
"Yeah, I'll come to. Bye Sam! The other two will be back soon." The last nurse said as she left Sam alone to think. He looked around. The wall was fine. There was no sign of a fight either. Sam looked over to the table. There was a candle. Sam gasped as the candle lit and his bathroom door slammed shut. The Midnight Man was messing with Sam's head! He needed to get rid of him. Sam tried to sit up, but his neck hurt so much. Everything did. He looked at the mirror on the wall. He looked exactly as he felt, close to death. He had choke marks on his neck and scratches covered his entire body.
"MIDNIGHT MAN!" Sam screamed into the night, "I THINK THE TWO OF US NEED TO HAVE A LITTLE TALK!" Will Sam ever learn how dangerous The Midnight Man really is?

8 147Runicka: Tournament of Monsters (A GameLit Card Game Fantasy)
The runes are changing, and with it, the game itself changes. Taygion Ardwella finds himself stranded, alone, and on the run from some very determined guards who claim Tay's stolen from them. They're right, but that shouldn't mean Tay has to give back what he took. He's only been in Stormwall for a week and already, he's earning the ire of the most powerful and notorious House that controls the city's underground. And when their scion challenges Tay to a duel of cards, Tay will find himself thrust into a game of sorcery and strategy as he attempts to both find a way out of this mess and find his own way in the world. To do both, he'll need to learn to accept guidance and coaching where it's sorely needed, craft a deck of unimaginable power, and not die whenever his opponents try and cheat him out of a hard-earn victory. But not all is as it seems in the shadows of Stormwall, and if Tay can figure out the importance of what it is he's stolen, he may just have a chance at saving the game of Runicka. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Runicka: Tournament of Monsters is a high fantasy, card game-based adventure novel with enough magic, worldbuilding, and characters to fill a Sanderson series. I would consider it a part of the GameLit subgenre. This series in particular is not an isekai, and will start and end in a high fantasy setting complete with its own lore and backstory. It is a progression fantasy, and I am writing it inspired by all the Yu-Gi-Oh mangas/animes, and all the hours I've invested/wasted (depending on who you ask) playing TCGs like Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a work in progress. In your journey through Stormwall alongside Tay, you'll probably find typos, grammatical errors, and maybe a confusing sentence every once in a while (although I hope to keep these to a minimum). That said, comments and suggestions on where I can improve are not only encouraged but greatly appreciated. And finally, expect new chapters every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**Currently on a small hiatus. I have a bit of a workplace crisis going on. I'm still writing, but I don't have time to polish and publish. Chapters will return on a regular basis soon though!!**

The world is dynamic, constantly changing through the story based on the actions of the characters. The story is intended to be told not just through writing, but through music and animation as well. The first music video was released along with chapter six. If you want a taste, you can find my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2LG4UHDJYqNWn6YS5Q2CVA
