《Gone》Chapter 4-Who

Logan continued to pull him, his grip on Virgil's wrist hurt but the prince didn't let him know that as he was dragged back into the castle. Logan said nothing to him as he climbed up a set of stairs, Virgil was confused by this but once again he didn't do anything that could show Logan that.
Finally, Logan threw open a door to a bedroom where Roman and Patton were already waiting. Logan pulled him into the room before practically throwing Virgil into a seat, "You are far stupider than any of us could ever have imagined, do you know what that man would have done to you if he knew who you were? Just the way you looked at him would be reason enough for him to slice you open, and for what? A grudge you have over that man?" Logan yelled as he threw a paper and pencil at him.
'That 'man' has trapped innocent children in burning buildings and fallen asleep to the sound of their screams.' Virgil wrote as fast as he could, the writing coming out messy. The three other boys froze as they read it. They knew the man, they knew it was not an exaggeration.
"That's war, Ann!" Logan yelled as he unfroze
'War is soldiers killing soldiers and communication between officials. War is not entering an unsuspecting village in the dead of night while all their trained fighters are away and killing those who remain in their sleep. I hold no respect for that man, my only regret is not being powerful enough to kill him where he stands'
There was silence in the room as Virgil glared at each of them, not caring to spare even Patton from the harsh look in his eyes. Roman cleared his throat and broke the silence, "You are a lot faster when you haven't been running for several hours, aren't you?" Roman asked. Virgil didn't answer, he just turned his gaze away to the floor as Logan continued to pace around the room. He was angry, that much was obvious.
"Kiddo, why did you try to run? We told you we would help."
Virgil picked up the pen again as he began to write. His words were messy, as though his penmanship was showing off his anger, 'My kingdom was attacked three days ago. People could be dying and hurt. My brother is stuck in a cell and chained to the wall. My best friend is covered in his own blood. And I'm here. You never came back, and my kingdom could be running out of time. Of course, I ran.'
"Ann this is a difficult situation for all of us and-" Roman was interrupted by Virgil harshly throwing the notepad in his face. Logan and Patton both froze, ready to jump in front of their prince and best friend if Virgil's actions became any more harmful. But they didn't. Instead, Virgil's eyes became filled with tears. Angry tears, sad tears, anxious tears, every type of tears except those that came with happiness. He let them fall but didn't make a sound as they did. They were hot, they burned into his skin and he didn't wipe them away. He glared at them.
Logan bent over and picked up the notepad, trying to distract himself from the emotions in the room. He read over what Virgil had written the last few days. He looked up at Virgil, and back at the notepad. Virgil ignored him. Logan looked over at Roman, who looked at him confused, and then back at the book, "Ann, why do you refer to it as 'your kingdom'?" he asked him. Virgil didn't move "Ann, you were at the castle during the attack, weren't you? Why?" Still no movement. "Who is your brother?" Nothing. "Ann, who are you?"

Finally, Virgil looked at Logan, small amounts of fear danced in his eyes. "You're part of the royal family, aren't you?" Logan asked.
Virgil nodded, slowly. There was no surprised gasp, no loud sound effect, no eyes widened in shock. It was all just silent. They had considered it to be possible, they had thought about it and accounted for the idea. They were not surprised. Roman sighed, taking a step forward and putting an arm on Virgil's shoulder. Virgil slapped it away. "Ann, I'm sorry. I can't imagine how hard this is for you. We should have considered that your situation is not the same as ours. We should have been more understanding of you"
Virgil stared at the floor, finally wiping the tears that spilled from his face. Patton took a step forward, "So that means your real name is Virgil, right? And your brother is Crown Prince Janus?"
Virgil stretched his hand out for the notepad again, and Logan handed it to him slowly, 'I'd prefer it if you keep calling me Ann. And Janus goes by Deceit, or Dee'
"Why do you go by your trait names?" Roman asked him
'Our father is still king until he passes his title down to my brother we will go by our trait names.'
"Oh..." Roman said, "Why didn't we know about that uh... tradition"
'Dark Realm traditions are ours. We try our best not to let them get past the border, however, we obviously don't always succeed' Virgil looked at Logan as they all remembered it was him who had explained what a trait name was to the other two. 'Can I leave now?'
"Unfortunately Ann, we are waiting to see what Roman's parents and their council decide to do." Logan said as he took a step forward, "If they decide to help then we will need you to guide us through your kingdom."
'And if not?'
The three friends looked at each other, exchanging glances before Logan answered for them, "If not then, you will either be free to go and you can do as you please, or you will be put back in the dungeons"
'I'll run again.'
Roman nodded, "Yeah you probably will,"
'They could come here next you know that right?'
"The Light Realm is fully prepared for any attack" Roman said, his voice sounded reassuring but that wasn't what Virgil was looking for. At least not about the safety of the Light Realm. He wanted reassurance about his kingdom, his brother, his friend, his home.
'We thought that too.'
"But we have a warning, so we might be okay."
"Roman," Patton interrupted before looking at Virgil, "I got an idea Ann, how about you teach us some sign language? Logan's been trying to learn some but we might have better luck if a person teaches us rather than a book."
Virgil looked skeptical, he glanced between the other boys in the room. Logan looked excited by the suggestion, Virgil wasn't surprised, he seemed like the type of person who was always ready to learn something new. Roman looked... well he didn't look excited but he wasn't upset about the suggestion either. He thought about it for a moment before nodding. "Okay then, here Ann, you can sit next to me," Patton said as they tapped the spot next to him. Virgil hesitated again before taking a seat next to Patton. "How do we ask; are you okay?"

Virgil looked down at his hands as if double thinking this before slowly showing them the correct signs. "How would we say; nice to meet you?" Roman asked him. Once again Virgil paused before he showed them how to sign.
"How would we go about informing someone else of our names?" Logan asked
Virgil picked up the notepad again 'You need to learn the alphabet for that' He wrote.
"We have plenty of time, my father is expecting this meeting to go on for hours," Roman said, again his voice sounded reassuring and Virgil chose to ignore the tone. Instead, he wrote the letter 'A' on the notepad and began going through the alphabet with them. Logan caught on quickly and needed very little help from Virgil. Occasionally though Virgil would hesitantly, almost fearfully, and slowly shift the boy's fingers till they formed the letters correctly.
Roman had more trouble than Logan did. Whenever Virgil would go back and quiz them he would hesitate and look to his friends for help, even though Virgil could tell he knew it. Then there was Patton, who would struggle to remember the information but once he had it was in there permanently and he could easily go back to it. They went through the alphabet a few times than Virgil taught them how to say 'My name is...' and watched as they spelled it out.
After they earned the alphabet and how to introduce themselves Virgil taught them a few words separately before putting them into full sentences and seeing if the others understood. 'You learn faster than Remus' Virgil signed eventually, he looked up at the three to see if they understood, none of them called it out so he repeated it, several times. On the third, Logan looked surprised, on the fourth Patton paled. It was the final time that Roman understood.
"You know my brother?" He said loudly, jumping to his feet quickly and making Virgil fearfully back up into the couch.
'He's my friend' He signed, they had learned that one earlier as well.
Roman shook his head, not even stopping to try and understand as he shoved the notepad in his hand "No. No. Write it out. How do you know him? Where is he? Is he hurt?"
Virgil's hands shook as he wrote out the answers to Roman's question's 'Remus is my best friend. He's dating my brother. I don't know where he is, he was the one who helped me escape. In my vision, he was hurt'
Roman began pacing the room, the only thing stopping him from running to his parents right now was that he still had very little information and his parents were in a meeting. Roman stopped abruptly and turned to Virgil again, "When did you meet him? Has he said anything about me?"
'Dee found him two years ago a mile in-a-half away from our castle. He was well past the border and Dee did what you guys did, put him in the dungeon. But after a month or two we all became friends, we said he could go home but he didn't want to. He doesn't talk about you much, he called you a dick though'
Logan read it out loud while Roman started pacing again, Logan handed the notepad back to Virgil afterward. Roman laughed slightly, "That-that sounds like him." Roman said, "How was he when you found him?"
'Half dead. He doesn't talk about that, it scares him. All he told us was some people hurt him real bad and they took his stuff. Still gets nightmares'
Roman stopped in his tracks, "We thought he was dead. They came back with his things and a bunch of looters and we never found him. They said he was dead. All this time we thought he was dead... is he- was he happy with you guys?"
'He said he was. He called it his home.'
"And- and your dad never hurt him?"
'Our dad loves him. He's always teasing him and Dee about getting married. But no, even when we first found him we didn't hurt him. Dee jinxed him for a week when he and I pranked him but it was only a small one and I got it too'
Roman dragged his fingers through his hair in utter amazement, a smile on his face as Logan finished reading it aloud again. "My brothers okay. My brothers okay!" He leaped towards Patton, hugging the shortest tightly and laughing with them.
"Unfortunately Roman, it seems your brother was one of the many captured during the attack," Logan said, he seemed upset to have to remind the others of the information but did so anyway. Virgil looked away from everyone as Logan shared the fact, guilt flooded through him as he remembered how Remus had taken the time to make sure Virgil got out okay and how he had gone back into the fight in an attempt to save Dee. Remus had been odd, and to be completely honest often got on Virgil's nerves but he truly was his best friend. Even though Remus was in a relationship with Dee, there were plenty of times when only the two of them hung out. And even when all three of them hung out it would work out, Virgil could tag along with his brother and best friend and joke with them and just enjoy being there. (Though he gave them plenty of room and time to do their own thing as a couple)
Virgil was pulled out of his thoughts when there was a knock on the door. Everyone looked up, and Roman gave them permission to enter. A servant came in, her hands filled with a basket of laundry as she spoke. "Prince Roman, your father is requesting the company of Mr. Croft, Marquess Hart, yourself, and the prisoner." Roman nodded, thanking the servant before turning back to the others.
Virgil was frozen to his spot, they wanted to see him. Would they want him to speak? Would they hurt him? He was their prisoner. Would they kill him? Whatever it was Virgil knew one thing, it gave him an opportunity to help his kingdom. He was gonna take it.
