《One For Three》25 - Doppelganger

"Vera!"
"You're back."
Vera clutched her head as she felt a massive headache building up. 'Where am I? I..." Her last moments with Theo crashed into her. She remembered her last promise, how her heart ached as she whispered those, how she felt as both of them took their last breath together. 'Theo..."
"Vera? What's the matter?"
She was woken out of stupor and looked into the curious eyes of Bassie and Leo. Their long ears twitched in anticipation.
"Wait..." Vera said shakily. "I'm back in the Afterlife?"
"Yep!" said Bassie.
"You've successfully finished two of your missions. Congratulations."
'What? But..."
---
The twins dragged her into Crispin's room. The whirring of the cameras invaded her ears as she was shoved into a soft couch.
"I guess congratulations is in order, Vera," said Crispin as he twirled a pen in his hands. "You know, I really am so amazed with your race. They're quite ingenious, really. See this tool?" He held the pen in front of her. "It's really easy to use unlike those quills, or those hideous blood needles, particularly when you're a calligrapher like me."
'Huh? What is he talking about?'
"Enough of this idle chitchat, I guess you're bored already." Crispin cleared his throat. "Leo! Prepare---"
Bassie squeaked and hid behind Leo as the door slammed open with a loud bang. All of their eyes darted towards there, which revealed Crispin, eyes blazing with fury. His eyes darted around the room, and darkened further as he shakily pointed a finger towards the doppelganger.
"Damos!"
Vera's mind twisted and turned as her eyes went back and forth at the two Crispins in the room. 'Just what is happening here?'
"Aw," the Crispin on the desk slouched and put his chin over his knuckles. On his face was a pout, sulkily staring at the newcomer. "You're no fun, Crispin." Vera was in confusion. The twins were not in a better state as they too looked at the two, doubt evident on their expressions.
"How did you escape the bindings so easily?" asked the sulky Crispin. "I knew I should've replaced those incompetent buffoons..." The doppelganger's face lightened up in glee. "Never mind that, you caught me!"
"What did you do?!" Crispin angrily marched and held the doppelganger's collar. His furious eyes met with the jovial ones. The features of the doppelganger melted and morphed until it resembled a devilishly handsome guy with blood red eyes and a teasing smirk on his lips.

"Why don't you guess, Mr. Perfect-With-a-Stick-Up-On-His-Ass?" The man, Damos, had the audacity to grin on the frightening Crispin's face.
Crispin went red with fury, as if he was going to explode at any moment. A few moments later of their staring competition, Crispin reluctantly let go off the man's collar. Damos just brushed off his collar, and pouted.
"That hurt a lot, Crispin!" said Damos in a childish manner. His eyes then lit up with a mischievous gleam. "Are you perhaps..." His face went near Crispin's, only a hair's breadth away from their lips touching. "Interested in me?" Damos smirked and pulled away. He fanned himself, "I didn't know you swung that way."
"Get out."
"What?"
"I said get out of here!"
Damos just sighed and stood up. "Boo. You're no fun."
Crispin reclaimed his rightful position on the desk. "As you can see, I don't care."
Damos paused in his tracks and turned around, eyes displaying hurt. "Do you... really hate me that much?" Tears pooled beneath his eyes. As they were about to drop, his eyes lit up once more in a joking manner. "Just kidding!" His eyes swept through the room, realization evident as he remembered the other forgotten beings inside the room.
"Oh, I'm sorry about that!" He smiled at the shivering Bassie and Leo. "I was just playing!" His eyes found Vera's own ones. "And you...
"You're mine."
Vera felt her heart sink as the man pinned her down with his piercing gaze. 'W-what?'
Damos just continued his monologue. "Not even the old man's machinations can steal what is mine!" He gave her a sinister grin. Vera quivered in fear. 'T-that can't be true!' Her eyes sought Crispin, who was staring angrily at Damos.
"Don't talk about the Great One like that!" lashed Crispin.
Damos brushed it off and laughed. "Of course, I'm just kidding! You're all so tense! You'll get wrinkles and old!" Damos turned to look at his left wrist, and let out an oh. "Looks like I've got to go!" He waved as he ran outside. "Bye!" Damos' eyes found hers once again. "See you, everyone!"
'That man,' thought Vera as she watched the man run, 'is too creepy. It was as if I was in danger just by standing near him...' Her eyes surveyed the other occupants of the room, and noticed that they were in no better situation than her.

Bassie and Leo trembled in fear even if the man had left the room for quite some time. His presence lingered in the room. No one made a move, fearing that the despicable man would return.
Aside from Crispin, of course.
Vera almost squeaked in fear as Crispin coughed. All eyes were trained at him as he spoke. "Now that the disaster has passed...
"Congratulations, Vera, for passing the two worlds. You've successfully done your missions there."
Vera was in a daze. "Thanks, I guess..."
"I would've told you that you would have the chance to see those people you've changed as a reward, but due to some circumstances," he spoke with such poison that it left no doubt what, or who he was talking about, "we couldn't proceed with the plan."
Vera knew she normally would feel depressed about the news, but she couldn't bring herself to be sad after all that had happened. She was in confusion.
However, Crispin was not finished yet. "We'll just let you what happened, then you'll proceed with your next mission. Leo."
"Y-yes?" The young elf was obviously shaken, yet he tried his best to not let it show.
Concern fleeted through Crispin's eyes, yet he continued. "Mind bringing us some beverages? Warm chocolate drink for me, and..." He looked at Vera.
"Coffee..."
Crispin nodded. "A coffee for her. Bring Bassie with you."
The twins obeyed, and left the room.
---
"So that's what happened with them..." Vera had a soft smile on her face. 'It was very relieving to know that they lived happily after all of that... And that the dead ones,' she held back a sob, 'they're not angry at me at all. Theo even...' Vera turned pink.
"Now that it's done," said Crispin, breaking her out of her thoughts, "you can proceed to your next mission."
"Can I get some details, please?"
Crispin handed her a sheet of paper. 'Wait... is this...?'
Sensing what she was thinking, Crispin agreed. "For the last mission, you'll be transported as a fairy godmother in a mirror. You'll remain dormant there, waiting until the wisher acquires the mirror. After that, you can proceed doing your mission.
"You, as a fairy godmother, can only give the wisher three wishes."
'Isn't that for a genie?'
"You will have the ability to sense the honesty and conviction between their wishes. Of course, you can talk with the person to dissuade them from the wish, but once they said it's final, you will be obliged to do so. Lastly, your cover story will be like this.
"You were once a regular fairy godmother, bringing joy and glee to every pure hearted person you find, but one day, on your quest to do so, you angered a warlock, and they've trapped you inside the mirror. The trap came with a curse, which is to grant three wishes to three different people. You are on your quest to find the last person, which happens to be the wisher that will find you. You will also go by the name Eve.
"Any questions?"
Vera's mind swirled at the information dump. However, she managed to process it all and nodded. 'It seems... easy.'
Crispin held the same thoughts. "I don't know why, but it seems easy... as if someone planned this." Crispin looked at her with concern. "Just be careful, okay?"
Vera agreed with him. She stood over the same alchemist circle she used on her first mission. However, despite her doubts, she felt calm. She started turning translucent once more and closed her eyes in anticipation.
That was until she remembered.
"Crispin!" Urgency seeped through her voice. Crispin abruptly turned his head to meet her eyes.
"What is it?"
"I... I'd just like to ask who Damos was..."
"Oh..." Crispin paused, mulling over his thoughts. "Don't mind him."
"It's just it bugged me a while back, with his suggestive and grating comments."
"Oh? Is that so? Don't mind him, he's just being a nuisance."
Despite her doubts about his answer, she accepted it as the truth. She closed her eyes once more, just seconds before she finally faded and left several streaks of light in her place. They lasted for several seconds, before they were gone too, like the body that was there before.
Crispin just stood there, staring at the empty space above the alchemist circle. He turned his back at it and walked away.
"Bassie, Leo. Come to my office, now," ordered Crispin.
'Vera... I don't have a good feeling about this, but I know you can pull through this... If there's anyone that could, it is you...'

A hair's breath of ground in a century is enough if the war takes all of eternity. Or to choose Hope. To cast away his memories, his power, his very life. Expect:Weak to strong quick-ish.Powerful MC reincarnates, gradually starts regaining memories.MC that is an actual character not a plot device. My original unique magic system discovered along with the MC.My original setting with mythos that have both been living rent free in my head for actual years.Opening arc will be less fast than the following story. Good writing (I think) and grammar. Upload schedulle: 2 chapters a week of 3-4k words each. I want to upscale to 3 in the future. Meant to be read in RR dark mode. For those coming here from my other stories, this is indeed a reimagining of my older story, CotM. I say reimagining because I have changed so much it cannot be called just a rewrite. Among the major changes, MC is fundamentally different in personality and background, I have actually planned the story out and changed it almost completely and I have adjusted my mythos so it no longer has as many holes as swiss cheese.
