《Darkling》6| Nightmare

I was sitting in bed, reading Alice In Wonderland. A comfort book, if you will. My mother used to read it to me when I was a kid. Except, she wouldn't do that at three in the morning. Like I am right now.
I looked down at my knuckles. They still looked bruised but they felt perfectly fine. That's how my bruises heal. You can see them, but I can't feel them. And any cuts or anything like that, they take a few days but they heal. Unless I stop them from healing. Which I would have to be very stupid to do because why would I want to let them heal like a human's when I can avoid all that time loss and pain?
I don't know why I jumped in and fought for her today. As much as I hate Atticus, I know he wouldn't have let Finn do anything to hurt her. But I just felt the need to get involved. To do it myself. I felt like I had to take care of her or no one else would.
She doesn't know that not all of us are human, and I don't want to imagine what someone with powers could do to her if she pisses them off like she did Finn today.
And Finn doesn't have powers. Finn is human.
But Atticus isn't. He has the power of telekinesis. And the last time he tried using that on me, it didn't work.
Obviously, because whatever he thought of doing, I could read his mind and do it first. When everything first happened, I had no idea that I could read minds. That's why I didn't know about what she was planning with Atticus. And I only learned that I could do it when the time came. Because if I didn't do it then, he would have killed me.
Desmond. Desmond. Desmond.
I know her. I do. Well, I don't know if you can call it that, but I've met her before. I remember it vividly, she probably doesn't.
We were around three years old. Her father had brought her and her mother to Ilea to meet her grandparents who were alive and working with my father at the time. Her grandfather was a very important member of the council from what I know. She only met them once here, they would visit them more, I guess.

She came to the palace. And um... I made a book float around her and she screamed and ran out of the library.
But in my not-so-strong defense, neither of us could reach the book. And I don't think she remembers it, we were too young anyway. I just remember it because that was when I realized that everyone isn't telekinetic like me, and everyone can't make things fly around a room.
I jumped, getting startled when a scream echoed through my room. It was faint but not faint enough that I missed it. I put the book down on my nightstand and shot up, rushing to my door, barely pulling my slippers on.
I grabbed the doorknob and was ready to open it, but I waited to hear the scream again. Maybe it was in my head.
That's another problem with my power of being able to erase people's dreams. Not only can I erase them, but I can see them when I wish to. And I can most certainly hear them. I just have to be around that person.
I heard a similar scream, a little shorter this time and I yanked my door open, looking into the hallway. The flower lamps hanging from the ceiling turned red at night, so the entire hallway was lit up red.
A few more people came out of their rooms.
"What's going on?" Wyatt asked, rubbing his eyes.
"I don't know," I mumbled.
Daisy came out of her room, rubbing her eyes as well. And soon enough, everyone on this floor was out of their rooms, looking for the disturbance.
Everyone but Clara.
Daisy is still half asleep, maybe that's why she isn't realizing that the sound is coming from the room right next to hers.
I pushed myself off the wall and started heading over to her.
"Callum, what are you doing?" Wyatt asked.
"Finding out what's going on," I said, stopping in front of Daisy. "Do you have a pin?"
"What?" She blinked in confusion.
"A pin? Any kind?"
She went inside and came back out with a hairpin. "Will a bobby pin work?"
I took it from her and walked to Clara's room.
"What are you doing? You can't break into her room like that!" Daisy exclaimed.

"I think you clearly need a wake-up call. She isn't out here with us because she's the one screaming," I huffed. I kneeled and started picking at the lock. I pushed the door open while standing up and ignored the chills that went up my spine.
I'm coming into this room after a year. And it looks completely different, but I remember how she kept it before she was gone.
Daisy and Wyatt followed me inside and my eyes landed on Clara who was still in bed. But she wasn't sleeping, per se. She was lying on her side and clutching a pillow, kicking her legs around restlessly.
She's having a nightmare.
"Did something happen to her?" Wyatt asked.
"She's having a nightmare," I sighed, closing her bedroom door behind us so no one else would interfere.
"About what?" Wyatt asked.
I gave him a look. "I'm not looking into her dream without her permission."
"Does she look like she's in the state of permitting you?" Daisy asked. "We should know! What is she dreaming about?!"
I walked over, sitting on the bed beside where she lay. I straightened out her legs and removed the pillow from her death grip. When she was calmer, I put my ring and middle finger in the center of her forehead and pressed down lightly.
"Mom, you should put the phone down."
"Yeah, I'm on the way, Kristie!"
"Mom, please put the phone down, you're driving!"
"I'll be there in five minutes, Jesus!"
"Mom, there's a car coming!"
"I said I'll be there in five-"
"Mom!"
I jumped, pulling my fingers away.
"What?" Daisy asked.
"We have to wake her up," I exhaled.
"Won't she wake up when the dream ends anyway?" Wyatt questioned.
"She will, but she can't handle the dream any longer."
"What was the dream about?" Daisy asked while getting a glass of water ready.
"Her mom's accident," I answered, taking the glass from her. "Clara." I shook her gently. "Clara, wake up."
She mumbled something in her sleep.
"Wake up!"
She whimpered, almost, trying to grab anything she could find.
"Clara, wake up," I said slowly.
She needs something to keep her grounded here. She's forgetting that she's just dreaming.
"Take her hand, Callum!" Wyatt exclaimed.
I huffed, grabbing her hand. "Clara. Wake up!"
She squeezed my hand tightly and then jolted awake. I let out a small breath of relief while she sat up, looking around in confusion. She was sweaty and flustered. She looked at me, utterly confused. "What are you doing here?" Then she looked at Daisy and Wyatt. "What happened?" she mumbled.
"We heard you screaming," Daisy said.
"You had a nightmare," Wyatt added.
"And woke up the entire floor," I shrugged.
Wyatt smacked the back of my head, making me glare at him.
"Here," I handed her the glass of water.
She still has no idea what is going on, but she took the glass and drank it down anyway. "I'm confused," she frowned.
"You were having a nightmare and you started screaming. Everyone woke up," I explained.
"How did you get in here?"
"I picked the lock," I answered.
"With what?" she scoffed.
"A bobby pin," Daisy replied.
"Are you okay?" Wyatt asked her, hesitating a little.
"Yeah, I'm fine, I don't—" She stopped talking, her eyes falling to our hands.
"You can let go now," I nodded.
She pulled her hand away quickly, fidgeting with her fingers. "I don't remember anything," she cleared her throat.
"What do you mean?" Daisy asked.
I looked at Daisy, raising my eyebrows at her.
"I didn't even know I was having a nightmare," she responded.
"Maybe that's a good thing," Wyatt blurted out. "You can sleep without thinking about it now," he shrugged.
There was a loud knock on the door, making her jump. Daisy went and answered it, stepping aside and letting our principal in. "What happened? I got a call from some students on this floor."
"Nothing," Clara said quickly.
"She was having a nightmare and started screaming," I said, watching her and reading her body language.
She's terrified. Not because she remembers it, but because she has no idea what just happened.
"A nightmare? About what?"
Daisy opened her mouth to answer but I beat her to it. "She doesn't remember, right?" I lifted a brow at Clara.
She nodded slowly, "Right."
"Are you okay, honey?" the principal asked her.
"I, um... I..."
The dream is erased.

The Ruined Monks of Rothfield Monastery
Erin is the youngest member of the dark monks; a supernatural brotherhood whose ultimate mission is to improve the dire circumstances of poor, war-torn villages using powers unique to each member. Or so he was led to believe. Erin, like his brothers, does not age, and that is, unfortunately, the only trait he shares with them. He cannot charm or compel like Woodrow, he cannot cast illusions like Knox, he was not swift like Swithin, not powerful like Blake. He was barely an assistant to his dear brother Wilbur, with his herbology and alchemy. He was told to lie low and make himself scarce. That is what he did. The dark monks temporarily reside in abandoned monasteries scattered around the country, feeding the poor and healing the sick, nurturing the monastic lands until it was fertile enough to raise crops and rear animals. As the years passed, they would leave these reformed, repopulated, self-sustaining monasteries and venture froth to help the next settlement. Yet, after years of toiling and quiet servitude, Erin notices that people and the country itself are declining. The villagers look gaunt, the once-lush soil now barren and cracked. He begins to feel disheartened, thinking that their mission is proving futile. Still, their leader Blake is steadfast and charges onward, and lately has his eyes set on a certain monastery in a thick, thorned forest that seems to diminish, even nullify their powers. A thick forest that Erin somehow has a connection to. A thorned glade where an ethereal voice calls his name with one simple request along with a promise:Heal the land, child. Heal the land and I promise to give you sanctuary so long as you stay. I promise to nurture you as you nurture me. As Erin cultivates the land, the land, in turn, gifts all its caretakers with new, enhanced skillsets on top of their unique powers -- skills of protection, healing, and magic. Magic. Erin had long wished to see the world fill with it again. The people, regardless of common or noble blood, still believe that magic will enter this world again. Magic to bless the king like it did the Saints. Magic to dispel the miasma befouling the world. Magic to bring back the fae folk and their many forms. It is up to Erin to forge the many paths leading to a bright future; to build a prosperous paradise that welcomes all races and bloodlines, by mastering the rewards gained through agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, smithing, crafting, and fishing. Erin may also find a lifelong friendship and romance with his neighbor, Claude, if he decides to pursue him, and may even join him in the military campaign outside the monastery. The darkness still lurks outside, after all, and the mastery of his skills, along with a few good friends, may finally be enough to turn the tide in their favor. Most of all, Erin wants to keep the vow he set for himself: to protect everyone and everything he loves until his dying breath.
