《Daughter of Mortis》Lies or Truth

"After I left the Jedi Order, I spent a few years moving from planet to planet. A few years later, I searched for Lux Bonteri, a good friend of mine. He was the leader of a group of rebels known as the Freedom Fighters. When I found them in the Outer Rim, many were hesitant to allow me into their group. Most of them knew me during the Clone Wars. Lux eventually persuaded them to let me stay and to keep my secret." Ahsoka gazed at Ania, as though searching her. "You have his fighting spirit. I wish..." she shook her head, clearing it.

"After almost a year with the Freedom Fighters, I became pregnant with you and we moved to Onderon so we could be married. Unfortunately, Vader found us right after you were born. We were forced to flee. I took you while Lux held off the stormtroopers. We all reached the ship and just as we were boarding," Ahsoka's voice caught and a single tear slid down her cheek. "Lux died protecting us. It broke my heart to leave him on that landing pad."

Ania felt a twinge of sympathy for her. She quickly scolded herself. Stop it! Why are you listening to her lies? That's all they are!

Another voice questioned her. Are you sure?

"I took us somewhere I thought we would be safe, but Vader found us when you were 10. I tried to keep him from you, but I couldn't. I never believed that Ana...that Vader...could do something like that. He almost killed me. He believed I am dead and still does. All he wanted was you because he remembered the power from Mortis and wanted it to serve the dark side." Ahsoka gazed into Ania's eyes. "But the light cannot bow to darkness, and darkness will never succumb to light."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Ania raised an eyebrow skeptically.

"It means that no matter how hard Vader tried, the light side in you always remained. You are perfectly balanced in the Force. You are the Balance of Mortis, given through the Daughter. You can choose neither light nor dark, but you can use both as you will it."

Ania opened her mouth to retort Ahsoka, but she couldn't find the words to do it. Everything Ahsoka had said made perfect sense and fit the visions she had been having for so long. "That doesn't matter. I serve Vader!"

"You don't have to. You could stay and help us." Ahsoka's blue eyes filled with a pleading gaze.

"I can't. I'm an Imperial mercenary! I'm a commander! Commander Tano!"

"Ania, I was Commander Tano in the Clone Wars. Darth Vader was my master, Anakin Skywalker."

The words felt like a blow to the face. "What? No...I mean...he can't be!" Ania exclaimed.

"He is. Although, there isn't much of my master left in that machine." Ahsoka bit her lip, thinking.

"I don't believe you! You're a liar and so are your Rebel friends. When Vader finds out where I am, he will send Kallus after me and this Rebellion will be wiped out before it even begins!" Ania bellowed. "You're just trying to trick me! My mother and father died when I was little. I have no family."

"Ania, that's not true. Vader is lying to you," Ahsoka began.

Ania spat on her face. "You are not my mother."

Ahoska's eyes grew large and round. She screwed them shut in concentration, then opened them with a flash of fury. "Fine. I didn't want to do this, but Vader's influence has gone deeper than I thought."

"Wait...what are you..." Ania quickly tried to scrambled away, but Ahsoka activated the magnetic locks on her ankle cuffs. She touched her hand to Ania's forehead and a flash of light filled the room.

Ania saw every vision she had ever had, only now they were complete and she knew each and every person within them. The light slowly faded and she blinked the shock from her sight. Ahsoka stood in front of her, arms crossed. "Believe me now?"

Ania didn't say a word. Ahsoka snapped her fingers loudly and Ezra stepped into the hut. He quickly shut off the magnetic locks and pulled Ania to her feet. She didn't bother to struggle. He nodded to Ahsoka and pushed Ania towards the door.

"She wasn't lying, you know," he said softly, as they walked towards Ania's hut.

"I don't believe a word that any of you say," Ania replied sharply.

Ezra opened the door to the hut and motioned her inside. Ania sat on the cot and stared at the floor, unable to meet his gaze. "Well, you should." His blue eyes glazed over for a second, before he spoke again. "You know, I think I had a vision of you, once. You were dressed like you are now, but you were being held prisoner and Vader was using me as bait to get you to give up Ahsoka's location. You wouldn't tell so Vader killed me but somehow, you disintegrated everyone in that courtyard except me, you, and Vader."

Ania stiffened, recalling her own vision, similar to Ezra's. "It was nothing. The Force is known for its lack of sense."

"You've had it too?"

"Get out."

"So you have? What was your version? How did it end?" Ezra prompted.

"It ended with me Force choking you in a small hut because you wouldn't leave me alone!" She hissed.

Ezra raised his hands defensively. "Ok, ok. I'm going. I just thought that maybe..." he trailed off. "Never mind. I wouldn't expect an Imperial Mercenary to understand." He turned and stalked out of the hut, locking the door behind him.

Somehow, the sharpness of his words sent a pang of guilt through her. Ania lay down on the cot and began to think, contemplating what she had been told. At last, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.

She opened her eyes in a strange room, covered with stars and white portal looking lines. Ania stood up, almost gasping with shock at the transparent walkway beneath her. She took a hesitant step. Nothing happened, save a small white circle that appeared beneath her foot.

Ahead of her, a green and white convor fluttered in the air. Ania tilted her head, eyeing the bird like creature. It chirped and flitted away, almost like it was calling to her. She took another hesitant step, then began to follow it.

The convor began to fly faster, leading her past several of the strange white rimmed doors. It stopped before one door with markings around it. The markings were also convors. It perched on top of the doorway and chirped at Ania.

Ania took a step forward and gasped as the doorway lit up. The beautiful woman from her visions appeared, her body glowing with an otherworldly aura.

"Welcome, Ania," the woman said.

"Who are you?" Ania narrowed her eyes in suspicion.

"You know who I am. I am you, I am your mother, I am even that convor, Morai," she said.

Ania thought for a moment, then shook her head disbelievingly. "You're the Daughter?"

"Yes, I am. Do you know why I have called you to this place?" The Daughter spread her arms out, motioning to the vast chamber.

"I don't even know what this place is."

"It is the world between worlds. It is a place where time knows no limits and where the past can be altered. I have something to show you." The Daughter smiled at her, knowingly. "Follow me." The doorway blackened and another one close by lit up.

Ania followed the stream of glowing doorways, each step taking her farther into the void. She glanced back, hesitant.

"Do not be afraid. Morai can show you the way out," the Daughter called reassuringly. She stopped, her image floating in another marked doorway. This time it was marked with crescent moons.

Ania lifted a hand to her cheek, where a crescent moon was permanently etched. "Those are my markings," she said.

"Yes. Here, you will watch your story, so you will know what is true and what is a lie." The Daughter waved a hand and disappeared. The portal glowed brightly and the past unfolded itself before Ania.
