《Daughter of Mortis》Escape

Ania blinked her eyes open in the dimness of her hut. Already, Lothal's sun had risen and morning had begun. Ania peeked out of the window in the hut and spotted Ezra approaching. She quickly ran back and sat on the cot. The door opened with a hiss and Ezra stepped in. He stared at her with his cool blue gaze.

"Here. I brought you food." He set a plate on a table nearby. He quickly turned to go, but Ania held out a hand to stop him.

"Wait. I...I'm sorry. I just can't believe what you guys told me. It would mean that everything I've ever known was a lie."

Ezra glanced back at her, secrets held within the depths of his gaze. "You shouldn't take Ahsoka for granted. You never know when she'll be taken from you."

"Wait, what do you..." Ania trailed off as Ezra left, sealing the door behind him. She sighed. "So much for that."

She quickly ate the food from the plate, then slipped on her boots. She stood up and paced the length of the hut. Maybe if I can get a look at the locking mechanism, I can use the Force to get out of here, she thought. Ania sat down and folded her legs, resting her hands on her knees.

She let her senses expand and spread through the small hut. She saw herself, the dirt, the walls, the door; the locking mechanism was almost in reach. Ania moved her senses about as garbled voices rang through her head. She ignored the lock for now, focusing on the voices. She quickly followed them, weaving her senses in and out through various tents and huts until she reached the voices.

This was a tent, not a hut. Ania looked around, waiting for the voices to start again. Her lightsabers lay on a table and next to them, her comm. Voices crackled over the comm. Ania moved closer, letting the Force enhance her hearing.

"The tracker worked. We know where she is." It was Kallus speaking.

"And Fulcrum?" Vader's distinct breathing echoed over the comm.

"Ania is with him. I'm sending the squad to the extraction point. What if she joined the Rebels?"

"She hasn't, but if she had, she would be killed like the rest of them."

Ania drew her senses back away from the comm as a new figure entered the tent. It was Ezra. She watched him move about for a bit. Thankfully the comm remained silent. I've got to remember to switch the frequency next time, she thought. She continued to watch Ezra, hoping the comms wouldn't turn on. She let her senses wander, examining every part of the tent for when she escaped.

She brushed her senses past Ezra. He whipped his head around, almost as if he could see her! His blue gaze filled with disbelief as he stretched out a hand. Ania shuddered as she felt his hand on her arm. She withdrew her senses from the tent, pulling them back to herself. She paused briefly to look at her locking mechanism.

Ania opened her eyes, quickly grounding herself in her body. She shook her head, disbelieving. "It was like he could see me!" She said to herself quietly. "No one has ever seen me before. I'm not even physically there! And Kallus is coming for me. Should I tell Ahsoka?" She shuddered to think what would happen to her if she warned Ahsoka of the coming attack.

Ania stiffened as the door to her hut hissed open. Ezra brushed inside. "What was that?" He demanded.

"What was what?" She asked, playing dumb.

"Don't act stupid. I know you were in my tent. What were you doing?"

"How could you sense me?" Ania asked, dodging the question.

"I didn't sense you. I saw you. Or, well, I didn't actually see you, but I knew where you were." His gaze flitted across her face in confusion.

"No one has ever sensed me before, except Ahsoka."

"What were you doing in there?" Ezra asked, ignoring her comment.

"Am I not allowed to meditate?"

Ezra narrowed his eyes. "Most can't stretch their senses that far without any damage."

"In case you've forgotten, I'm not like most," she hissed.

Ezra sighed and sat down in front of her. His blue black locks swung down, hiding his face. "You know, I've never seen Ahsoka so shaken up over anything. You look like her."

"No, I don't. There is nothing similar about us!" Ania barked, trying to convince herself as well as him.

"I told you about that vision I had. You acted like you knew what I was talking about. Have you had it too?" He glances up, searching her gaze hopefully.

"I have no idea what this vision is," she lied.

"I looked different in the vision. You look like you do now. I could feel conflict and distress in you and for some reason, I cared about you a lot. Vader killed me, and you lost control and split everything in half." Ania watched him, curiously.

"When Kanan brought you here, I couldn't believe it. I thought my vision had just been a dream, but here you were. I just looked at you and immediately knew who you were." Ezra met her gaze, blue eyes mirroring each other's. "I know you knew who I was. You had the vision too, didn't you?"

"That's not important."

"But it is! Don't you see? If you join the Rebellion, we are this much closer to stopping the Empire!"Ezra exclaimed.

"I can't! Even if what you say is true, I can't. Vader can easily find me!" Ania blurted out.

Ezra stood, hurt echoing in his gaze. "Fine. I see how it is." He turned to leave.

"Wait," Ania called. Ezra hesitated, turning to her. "The Empire will be here sooner than you think."

Ezra narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean?"

"They know where I am."

Ezra's eyes widened and he flew out the door, pausing briefly to look at her again. Ania heard the door lock and muffled voices. Commotion ensued shortly. She sighed and stood. "At least, if they find me away from here, I have no reason to fight."

Ania dove into the Force, surrounding herself in it. It felt strange, not as turbulent as normal, but still dark and clouded. She ignored the feeling for the moment, focusing on the door. With a simple thought, the lock clicked open. She looked down at the magnetic cuffs on her wrists and ankles. Although they weren't active now, it wouldn't be long before someone brought them online.

She studied them quickly, but could find no way to open them. She didn't have enough time to search them with the Force. It would have to do for now. Ania burst through the door, dodging in between rebels as they frantically ran, preparing for the Empire's arrival. She kept her gaze searching for Ezra's tent.

She spotted it at the outskirts of the camp. Ania quickly ducked inside. Her lightsabers and comm were gone. "No!" She groaned. A sudden sound caught her attention. The sound of magnets coming online. She turned, just as the cuffs activated. Thrown off balance, Ania fell to the dusty floor. She wiggled around until she could sit up.

Ezra looked down at her, his hand hovering over a button on his wrist cuff. "I knew you were doing something."

"You have to let me go," Ania said, calmly.

'Why? So you can tell your Imperial friends about our plans?"

"No, so I can save your butts. If you keep me here, Kallus will search me out and find you along with me. There will be many deaths. If you let me go, I can convince Kallus to cease searching," Ania explained.

"Why should I believe you?" Ezra spat.

"You shouldn't."

He looked at her suspiciously for a moment, before tapping a button on his cuff. Instantly, the magnetic cuffs deactivated. Ezra knelt down and slid some sort of lever from its hiding spot. The cuffs expanded and slid off her ankles and wrists easily. Ezra pulled out a drawer and grabbed her lightsabers and comm from it.

Ania stood and held out her hand expectantly. Ezra hesitated. "You can't tell them anything about us," he warned.

"No promises. You, however, have to hurry up, unless you want Kallus to reach us before I'm gone."

Ezra glanced at her comm again. He quickly input a frequency and uploaded it to the comms memory system. "There. That's the frequency my comm is on." He placed the lightsabers in one of her hands and the comm in the other. She quickly clipped the lightsabers to her belt and slid the comm into a leather pouch on her back.

"Thanks." Ania ran out of the tent and into the grass plains.

"Will I see you again?" Ezra called out.

"Maybe," she replied, before running out into the grasslands. The familiar thrum of TIE fighters sounded in the distance. Ania quickly switched on her comm. "This is Commander Tano. Does anyone read me?"

There was static for a few moments and then, "Commander Tano, this is Agent Kallus. Where are you?"

"I'm headed your way. I escaped but the Rebels left a few days ago."

"Copy that. We're sending a transport to pick you up."

The incoming TIE fighters turned away as an unheard order went through their comms. A transport close by touched down and stormtroopers jumped off, escorting Ania aboard. As the transport lifted, Ania turned towards the camp, where so much had been revealed to her. She steeled herself for the coming interrogation and turned away.
