《Contrasting Similarities》19. Picnic

"A park," I stated in disbelief.

"Well yes. Because it's kid-friendly and we can spend time with each other in silence," Josiah answered, getting out of the car and taking a deep breath, while stretching.

"Let's go," Jayden said, getting out and putting his shades on.

We followed them to the gates and entered behind them.

Like any normal family would do, Josiah laid down a huge sheet for us to sit on. We were sitting under a tree and near the small pond this park had.

"This is beautiful," Rose muttered. I turned my head to find her staring at a butterfly sitting close by.

"I want a butterfly!" I said, moving to grab the butterfly's wings.

"Stop it, sweetie. You will hurt it," Dad said, pulling me back. "And the butterfly will be sad."

"But it's so pretty." I pouted.

"Yes it is. But you can't touch it," Dad said, pulling me to him, so I sat between his legs, my back to his chest.

"Why?" Rose asked, looking up at him, tucked under his arm and cuddled into his side.

"Because that's a fairy and you never hurt them," Dad said, looking at me, then placing a kiss on my head. He did the same to Rose and muttered, "Just like you two."

"So no one can hurt us?" Rose asked. Her eyes had widened as she looked at the butterfly with adoration.

"No one can. I won't let anyone hurt my fairies." He kissed our cheeks this time.

"So if Mom became a fairy. Does that mean she will return as a butterfly?" I asked, tilting my head to look at him.

He nodded.

"And she will stay by our side in whatever shape or form."

"So can we take Mom home?" I pointed at the butterfly. Rose stifled a laugh while Dad sighed.

"Are you being cheeky or did you really not get anything?" He said, narrowing his eyes when he saw the mischievous look on my face.

"Bunny," Someone sang. I blinked and turned towards Josiah.

"I asked if you would like to eat something." He smiled, hiding his frown quickly.

"No," I said, looking at Rose, who was looking back at me with the same expressions.

The butterfly was now flying around circling us. My eyes followed it, until it landed on Jayden's nose. Jayden jerked the slightest bit, it almost went unnoticeable.

I couldn't see his eyes behind his shades.

"You're a princess now," Rose blurted out, but quickly shut her mouth.

"Oh, Am I?" Jayden said, in an exaggerated high pitched voice.

I stared at the butterfly, until I felt a hand on my left shoulder. Rose was sitting to my right, so I flinched and turned my head sharply.

"Mom is always there with you, babies."

Mom sat beside me, with her hand on my shoulder. I closed my eyes and counted to three. This is another hallucination.

"I'm real," She said. I looked around to find Jayden, Josiah and Rose looking at me. The bright surroundings had turned dark and dull.

I looked back at Mom and inhaled deeply.

"Do you think I returned as a butterfly?" She asked, pointing behind me.

I turned when I heard a giggle.

Jayden, who was still almost fully laying with his head against the tree, was laughing. Rose tried to touch her finger to the butterfly's wing, but instead fell on his stomach, causing a pained 'oof' to come from both of them.

"Rose didn't flinch. She's being so friendly," Mom said. "Maybe open up a little to them."

I shook my head. No I won't.

Rose deserves it. She can do what she feels is right for her and I will do what I feel is right for her. Compromise.

If I'm happy too, things will change for the worse and leave us both sad.

"Levi."

I flinched when someone grabbed my shoulders and shook me a little.

"Yeah?" I asked, looking at Rose, who was now suddenly crouched before me. My head hurt from the sudden brightness of the surroundings.

"You were shaking your head and frowning at air," Jayden said. He was kneeling between Rose and Josiah.

"You had another hallucination," Josiah concluded, frowning sadly. "Think about it again, Honey. We know a therapist. He's our friend."

"I don't need one," I muttered.

"You clearly need one when you keep seeing things and talking to imaginary people," Jayden snapped.

"Mind your own business," I said, clenching my jaw.

He matched my glare with his own.

"My business is to look out for you, my family," He said. "And watch who you're talking to."

"I know who I'm talking to and I don't regret saying this to you. Not one bit," I gritted. "Fuck off, Jayden."

His glare intensified and I heard a crack. I looked down at his hand to see his fist clenched tightly around his shades that were broken now. My arm went around Rose's shoulder instinctively when the first thought that crossed my mind was, he will hurt Rose.

"We're going home," He said. He stood up, threw the shades in a trashcan nearby and waved at us to move.

Josiah sighed and stood up too, followed by me and my twin. I walked behind a furious Jayden with my twin rushing behind me.

"Calm down, Levi," Rose said, when she was close enough.

"Strangers need to mind their own business," I gritted, loud enough for Jayden to hear.

Jayden said nothing. He stormed over to the car and opened the door for Rose. Rose got in but he slammed the door shut before I could.

"We're being nothing but patient and lenient with you, Bunny. Be very cautious. You might cross the line," He said, in a low tone, leaning down to be on my level.

I stared back at him.

"Then mind your own business, Jayden. You've just met me days ago," I said back.

"I'm still your elder brother." He gritted.

"Brothers can go to hell with their bossy ass, thinking they're all authoritative and in-charge," I snapped, not letting him finish what he wanted to say.

"Well, we are in-charge and we haven't done anything bad to you. All we've done so far is try to understand your problems and help you," He said. He was leaning against the car.

"I'm just waiting for you to show your real sides, Jayden. Every single one of you. We don't need your help," I said, clenching my hands into fists, bunching the hem of my shirt in it.

Josiah came with the stuff and frowned at the scene. He opened the door for me and asked me to get in. I glared at Jayden one last time before climbing in.

Jayden and Josiah stood outside for a moment, before Josiah came to sit in the passenger's seat, while Jayden sat in the driver's.

The car ride home was silent. Josiah was constantly tapping his foot, looking out the window mostly but glancing at his twin occasionally. Rose was now sitting right beside me, instead of the other side and squeezing my hand while watching Jayden fearfully.

Jayden was well, trying to keep his mouth shut. He'd open it after some time but would close it before any bullshit came out.

I was just staring out the window mostly, sitting completely still and silent.

"So you want to talk back now, huh?" Lucas asked, grabbing my hair while getting in my face. "Mind repeating what you said?"

"Fuck you, Lucas." I chuckled in his face, annoying him a lot.

He slapped me across the face, making my face turn to the side sharply.

"You're being a bitch, Lucas," I spat. His eyes got wide, before I felt his fist make contact with my stomach. I gasped and doubled over.

This was the second time he had come at me for scoring less than Rose.

"She got two points more," He said.

"You don't even care about my score. All you care about is if you have a reason to satisfy the demon hidden inside you," I said. He grabbed my collar and shoved me into the wall.

"Pathetic," He muttered. "Pathetic how you can't even do shit for your twin."

"And how is it for her?" I asked, looking him straight in the eyes without any sign of fear or any emotion actually.

"What if I say, whoever scores less will go through this?" He said, his voice getting quieter with each word. "Aurora is always a point or two behind you in everything, except maths and chemistry."

That shut my mouth quickly. I stared at him for a moment, before looking away.

"Don't hurt her," I muttered.

"Now that's a good bitch." He smirked, before stepping back, making me fall to the ground.

He cracked his knuckles and his smirk widened.

"Let's start with the punishment then."

I jumped when a loud bang echoed around me.

"Levi." I looked at Rose through teary eyes.

Jayden and Josiah were already out and Josiah was holding the door open at our opposite side.

"What happened?" She asked, cupping my face but pulling away when I flinched. I grabbed her hand in my shaky hand and placed a kiss on it, keeping my lips there for some time. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

I'm glad I made the right choice.

"Nothing," I muttered. She nodded, complying as always then moving away to get out. I followed her, stumbling a bit when I stood up.

"This is the fourth time, honey," Josiah said, after he almost rushed to help me stand but stopped.

"It's not that big of a problem," I said, waving him and his concerns off.

"Are you moving on your own or do I have to drag you to Lucian's office?" Jayden snapped as he appeared, pocketing his phone.

"Can't you just let it go, Jayden?" Josiah glared at his twin.

"No, I can't. I called Lucian already. He'll be home in about thirty minutes and he wants to see her as soon as he reaches his office," Jayden informed.

'Treating you like a bitch.'

"I'm not going to sit there for thirty minutes and wait for him," I stated and stuffed my hands in my pockets.

Walking up the steps into the house, I opened the door and left it ajar, before walking down the hallway.

I need to get away from everyone.

I hope I get lost in this mansion and no one finds me for a day or two.

I kept walking until I came across a dead end. But it wasn't actually a dead end because there were sliding doors that led to the backyard.

I walked through them shutting them quietly behind me. Not that they needed any gentleness, they were already so smooth.

I step foot on the grass and immediately the fragrance of flowers hit me.

I looked up to find a grassy lawn, a big one, almost a ground and just the high wall, that surrounded the mansion.

Turning my head a lot to the right, I spotted where the fragrance was from.

In the far corner, there was a secluded area. It was separated by walls but these walls were covered with green and flowery plants of all types.

I started walking towards it. There was a small metal gate to a side. Opening the gate with a metallic creak, I entered the area, only to struggle with holding back a gasp.

It was a flower garden type area. A wide, bench like swing was near the wall before me and the whole place was colorful with flowers and butterflies.

I walked to the middle, looking at everything. I was astonished. Twirling on the spot, I noticed the tent in a corner, against the same wall which had the gate.

It was clean, surprisingly. A triangular area to sit, along the meeting point of two walls, with the side facing the garden wide open. It had fairy lights draped on it and filled with cushion and blankets. It was raised slightly.

Walking over to the corner, I crouched down and touched the cushions. The blankets looked fresh.

I climbed into it and sat with my back against the corner and my knees to my chest.

Mom would've loved this place. Dad wanted to have something like this, but we couldn't. He didn't have much time or space to do this.

I don't know how long I sat there, staring at the garden, lost in my thoughts.

The sun was about to go down, painting the sky a pretty pink.

The metal door hitting the wall beside it loudly, made me yelp quietly. I jumped and backed away into the corner, wishing they don't see me.

I didn't want anyone to find me so soon.
