《Mystery of Redpaw (PAW Patrol Fanfic)》The Truth

Artie sighed, avoiding Ryder's questioning eyes. "What's going on?" Ryder asked.
"We began developing Redpaw shortly after your father died. It started out as military research, that part is true. But, as the project continued, and failed, they cut our funding. The pup was young and helpless. I couldn't just... put him down.
Using the same research, I developed parents for Redpaw, ones that would exhibit the same powers, if it had actually worked. I sent them out with a team and they ended up here in Adventure Bay. I was hoping they'd find you."
"So you think his parents are still out there?" Ryder asked after taking in what he was told.
"I hope they're still out there, for the pups' sake." Unbeknownst to Ryder, Artie had already sent out a team to hunt them down. If what Ryder said about Redpaw was true, then there was hope that the adult wolves would be more successful with further testing.
"Then, I guess we should tell Redpaw," Ryder said. "I'll let the pups know we're on our way."
"How about," Artie said. "We go find them. Together. We can surprise Redpaw."
Ryder smiled. "That sounds great! Let's go!" He got up and started walking to the Lookout, Artie following closely behind.
Artie sent a message out to his team, ordering them to find the wolves.
"Redpaw, in case you haven't noticed, some pups are still hurt," Skye said.
"I have to find them, though!" Redpaw whimpered. "They're my family, they can explain what's wrong with me."
"Oh pup," Skye said, joining the slightly smaller wolf on the bed. "We're your family now. No matter what, we'll be here for you." She nuzzle him.
"I know," he said quietly. "I still want to see them, though."
"It's going to have to wait a while, 'til everyone's all better."
With a heavy sigh, Redpaw nodded. "Okay."
"Come on," Skye said, hopping down from the bed. "I bet you're hungry." With a wag of his tail, Redpaw followed her outside, greeting the others.
Chase still had bandages on his paws and was being scolded by Marshall. "I bet you'd look great in a cone," he threatened. Chase lowered his ears and whimpered, causing Marshall to laugh.
Rocky was in his puphouse, Redpaw noted. Sleeping off a terrible headache that was only alleviated with a few pain pills.
Zuma seemed to be doing better, limping a little as he ran to chase Rubble, who barked and yipped with joy.
Redpaw looked to Skye and noticed claw marks on his side. They weren't bad, nothing more than faint scratches, but it still worried him. "What happened to your side?" he asked her.

She stopped to see what he was talking about. "Oh, that. When Chase and I fell through the ground, he grabbed me and used his claws to grip onto the wall to slow us down. I hadn't noticed." She saw the surprise in Redpaw's eyes. "Oh I know he didn't mean to. It was an accident."
"Are you sure you're okay?" he asked. Wolves noses are highly sensitive. He could sense the apprehension oozing off her.
"I- I guess I'm still shaken up from the fall, but I'll be fine." She lead him over to his food bowl and watched as he chowed down, eagerly filling his stomach.
Chase trotted over, limping a bit with every step. "Hey, Redpaw. How've you been?"
"I've had better days," Redpaw said.
"He thinks he dreamt about his mom," Skye said.
"Really? What'd she look like?"
"A white wolf. I know, weird, right? But I'm positive she's my mom and I have to find her."
"Tell Ryder when he gets back with Artie."
"They're out exploring," Marshall said. "They won't be back for hours. Hey, let's call Everest! Maybe she wants to play!"
"You just want her all to yourself," Redpaw teased. Chase and Skye looked at the shocked Marshall with smirks, whose muzzle seemed to hit the ground. "Just like Chase and Skye." With that, Redpaw trotted off happily, leaving the three pups blushing. "I might be the youngest, but I do notice!" he barked over his shoulder.
Rubble and Zuma came over, panting happily. "What's wrong with you pups?" Zuma said.
"Why are you all so blushy?" Rubble asked.
They only continued blushing more intensely.
Redpaw knocked on Rocky's door, hoping he didn't disturb the sleeping pup. "Come in!" his voice said. Happily, Redpaw pushed open the door. "Hey wolf."
"Hey, dog," Redpaw giggled. "How're you feeling?"
"My head is killing me, but I guess I'm okay. What about you?"
"My body's a bit sore," he admitted. "But I'm fine."
"That's good, I guess." An awkward silence filled the small room. "Is there a reason you came in?"
"Well, I- uh, I wanted to talk about something. From my 'visions'."
Hearing this, Rocky say up. "Did something happen?"
"Remember when you made me see where Chase and Skye were?" Rocky nodded. "Well, I want to do that again. I want to find my parents."
Rocky frowned. "You seemed really freaked out when we did it before."
"But this could help. I have to find them, Rocky. I need them."
"Okay. Let's go into the Lookout. I'll set up the command screen and then we can start."

As Ryder and Artie headed into the forest, Artie couldn't help but glance at his pager every five minutes. Ryder took notice but decided against saying anything. Perhaps the scientist was checking on his lab or something. "Let's try over here," Ryder said.
Artie followed closely behind. He reached into his back pocket, pulling out a needle. "Ryder, there's something else you should know."
"What's that?" Ryder felt pain in his neck. Swiftly turning around, he found Artie holding the needle in his had with a frown on his face. "Y-you-" His knees felt weak and he stumbled forward into Artie's arms.
"I'm sorry, Ryder," Artie whispered. "But I have a job to do and I can't let you or your pups get in the way." He slipped his hand into Ryder's pocket, pulling out the pup pad. He ripped out the battery and tossed it into the bushes. He continued staring into Ryder's brown eyes, seemingly pleading 'Why?'. "I'm sorry, my nephew," he whispered. Ryder fell limp, his breathing slowing down.
Settling him peacfully against the base of a tree, he stroked Ryder's chin before pulling out his own phone. "Alright, there shouldn't be any ditractions. Have you found them?"
"We may have found their den. THere's definitely signs of wolves around here."
"Send me the coordinates, I'm on my way." Putting his phone away, he looked back at RYder. "I'll be back to explain everything," he said, as if the boy could hear him through his unconsciousness. Artie collected himself and ran away through the forest, following his coordinates.
Hours passed. Ryder and Artie had yet to return, so Chase called Katie to prepare their dinner. Pup treats, as delicious as they were, were not the right kind of food for the pups.
Except, Rubble, maybe.
As Chase paced back and forth in the Command Center, watching Rocky work with Redpaw, he couldn't help but wonder what could have happened to them.
Skye watched him from afar. "They probably found something interesting and stuck around to explore," she suggested. Chase's ears swiveled in her direction, but he never took his eyes off the screen.
Rocky and Redpaw were busy talking to each other in hushed whispers. Hours ago, Rocky had Redpaw concentrate on his parents to try and find them. He re-experienced his dream and woke up with a shocking howl. After being comforted, Rocky had told him he wouldn't have to do it again unless he wanted to.
With Ryder and Artie missing, Rocky was trying to convince him to use his gift one last time, but Redpaw wasn't having it. "I'm scared, Rocky," the frightened pup whispered. "What if they're hurt, or worse? I don't want to see that..."
"I know, pup, but we've got to find them either way. I can't track Ryder's pup pad. This might be the only way."
"What about my nose?" Chase suggested. "I could sniff them out."
"Even so, it would be better to know exactly where they are," Rocky said.
"If Redpaw doesn't want to do it, then he won't," Marshall said. "It's not fair to him."
"I-I want to..." Redpaw whimpered. "I'm just... scared of what I might see."
"We'll all be here," Chase nuzzle him. "We'll be right here when you wake up."
"Plus, we'll see what you see," Rocky said. "Just like last time."
Redpaw nodded. "O-okay... Here goes." He closed his eyes, leaning into Rocky's fur. Rocky bit on his scruff and lifted him onto the control panel, setting him down gently. As Redpaw concentrated, a blurry image appeared on screen. The pups watched in awe as they saw the world through Redpaw's eyes. Thousands of images flew by on screen.
Suddenly, everything fell black. Redpaw's paws began glowing and a new picture appeared. He was in a forest, looking around cautiously. Peering through the bushes, Artie stood alongside three other scientists. Sprawled out on the ground in front of them, two white wolves. One was bleeding. Artie smiled down at them. "We've got them," he said. "The experiment will continue on."
Redpaw's eyes shot open. He pushed Rocky back, forcing him to the ground. Redpaw thrashed about, his claws getting stuck in the carpet. He barked and whimpered wildly, trying to get a sense of his surrounds. As fast as his freakout started, the pups around him instantly snuggled against him, trying to comfort him.
Marshall picked up the struggling pup and ran over to one of the beanbag chairs. He carefully placed Redpaw down on the soft cushion, shushing him in his ear. The pups followed, watching the pup whimper and whine.
"Redpaw," Chase said. "It's us, you're home. You're safe." He nuzzle his cheek. Redpaw lashed out, swiping his claw across Chase's muzzle. Yelping in pain, Chase backed up. Marshall followed him, checking on his bleeding muzzle.
"Pup, please, you need to calm down," Rocky said, climbing onto the bean bag. He pulled Redpaw close, much like how Ryder held them sometimes. He held the pups head against his chest with one paw while holding the smaller paws still. Redpaw trembled against him, his whimpers beginning to diminish. "Check the screen and see if you can track down where exactly that was," Rocky whispered to Zuma.
Marshall cleaned up Chase's wound, placing a piece of gauze on top. "He didn't mean it," he said.
"I know, it just hurts. He's really struggling with all this. No pup should go through this."
"Well, hopefully we can find Ryder and Artie. I'm sure they're fine."

I am quite busy and write this during breaks at work. This is one of those goon-squad stories with a million characters, so "dizzying" might be a good way to describe the energy. Much of what builds up to the first arc happens in the first ten chapters, which are quite long. For that reason, if you have difficulty getting through the story, I understand, though things don't really start happening until Chapter 8-10.
