Janie walks into the house and goes for the kitchen, but stops when Stella hisses her name.
"Janie." Stella motions her over to the piano where her and August are.
"What?" Janie asks. Stella just waves her over. Janie walks over, sighing. "Why do you have the winner hat?"
"Something's wrong." Stella states making Janie's blood run cold.
While the three siblings sit at the piano and Stella tells them about her worries, Bonham gets back, him and Abilene talking about the Davidsons.
"Do you remember when the boys were little?" Janie hears her grandmother ask. "And they'd... they'd go off to school or camp... and, at first, there was always this worry. You know, just a moment where they weren't sure if they wanted to go. They say they'd miss us, and they'd never say they were scared, but I'd have to remind them of the invisible string. How it connected us, and I told them all they had to do was tug on it, and I'd know. I'd just know."

"Hey." Captain James greets.
"Hey. Cavalry's here." Cassie says. "How can we help, huh? Zhuzh some flowers? Rum some punch? I can DJ upon request."
"She was a motivational dancer at bar mitzvahs, if that helps." James says.
"Hey, I never told you that." Cassie says.
"Deep background checks, Perez. Very thorough." James says.
"You're quiet." Cassie notes. Trey and Liam walk in through the back door.
"Gentlemen." James greets.
"Hey." Cassie nods.
"What, this-this is how you dress for a party?" James asks.
"Hey, I tried calling you, Cap." Trey says.
"What's up?" James asks as the siblings walk into the kitchen.
"There's not gonna be a party, so can we all just stop pretending like there is?" Stella asks. "Dad's missing."
"What?" James asks.
"We lost him on the trail." Liam says.
"I told you this wasn't over." Cassie says.
"That's a leap, Perez." James tells her.
"Yeah, I say let's take it." Cassie says. "We busted Fenton, and he was so scared of whatever we were getting close to, he killed himself. Then we're shot up, and then Miles is shipped off to WITSEC. I need to call Miles."
"I need us to take this into the other room." James says.
"No." Stella objects. "Talking about it in private is only gonna make us all assume the worst, and we're already used to that. Captain."
~ ~ ~
"All right, we're heading to HQ, set the BOLOs up statewide." James states.
"Cap, I just talked to the mayor's office. They're putting together a team." Cassie says. Janie walks past her and sits on the chair sideways, her legs dangling over the side and she plays with her rings.

"You know what? We're gonna need a unit out here." James says. "Trey. You in?"
"As a ranger?" Trey asks and the captain nods. "Yes, sir."
"Okay. You can't badge up in the next five minutes -- it's gonna be process -- but what you can do is set up a base camp here at the ranch. Head up the search."
"Yeah." Trey nods.
"I'll be with him on that." Bonham says.
"Yes, sir. Perfect. You know the terrain." James says. "Abby."
"Oh, I put the word out, and they're still going." Abilene says.
"Okay." James nods.
"Could you..." Abilene motions Liam to go to August who is at the piano. "Hi." She walks into the kitchen, still on the phone.
"Hey, we'll be checking in, all right?" James says as he and Cassie get to the door. "Augie, you got my number. Use it."
"Yes, sir." He nods.
"Hey, Cass. Look, I know this is a lot, especially after what happened with Miles, but we're gonna get through it." Janie hears Captain James tell the woman. "We're gonna find him."
"Yeah, no other option. It does feel horribly familiar. Just the way he disappeared so suddenly and completely, and now the not knowing." Cassie says.
"Just tell him you're happy to see him when he's back, all right?" The two leave and August starts playing the piano.
Liam plays with him, Janie able to recognize "When the Saints go Marching In". Janie clenches her jaw and ignores the stinging in her eyes, pushing her tears back.

Cordell is chained up as one of the guys taser him. He tasers Cordell again. When he goes to taser him again, Cordell follows Emily's advice.
"Who's Jenny?" Cordell asks making Neo falter.
"Don't you play dead like a champ?"
"Who's Jenny? Daughter? I'm guessing she's your daughter." Cordell says. "Yeah, I got a daughter, too -- two, actually -- but you knew that, didn't you? You know today is graduation day."
"You're making this harder than it has to be, you know that?"
"Yeah, I read the same manual, Neo." He tasers Cordell who grunts in pain. "End of the day, you and me, we're dads. I bet Jenny worries about you. My daughters are worried about me, I could tell you that."
"Shut up!"
"What are we taking a break?"

The three siblings are sitting in the living room and putting the board game up.
"I don't think I can do this again." Stella says.
"It literally doesn't matter where you put your stuff away." August says.

"No, I mean... this. Everyone whispering, trying to distract us. Act like it's normal." Stella says.
"Kinda is normal by now." Janie mutters, fidgeting with the fake money in her hand.
"What if this is it?" Stella asks. "What if this is the case that kills him? I mean, can we just say it?"
"You know, when he was gone before... with the rodeo stuff, every time Uncle Liam left, I used to think he was going to I.D. dad's body or something." August says.
"Same." Stella says.
"Yeah." Janie whispers and nods.
"And then, you know, he'd come back, and he would look sad or worried, but he never said anything about dad, so I just kind of figured it was okay, and I... I was trying not to think about it, but I was always... I was always kind of thinking about it."
"Of course you were. Uncle Liam was gonna adopt us." Stella says. "Which is why I have to do something." She stands up. "I need to. I can... I can call people. I can drive. I can..."
"Same, yeah. Me, too." August says.
"Yeah." Janie nods.
"Augie, Janie, no." Stella denies.
"What do we mean? Stella, we were all just saying how sick we are of sitting around while all this stuff is happening." August says.
"I mean, you guys can't do anything. Don't you get it? It is my job now to keep you two safe." Stella states.
"Your job?" August asks, standing up.
"Okay, chill, college girl. You just graduated high school and have been an "adult" for, like, five minutes." Janie remarks, standing by her brother.
"And we're not children." August states.
"I'm not gonna let you two put yourselves in danger." Stella says.
"Oh, well, then what are you going to do, exactly? Stella, you get one helicopter ride from Search and Rescue, and suddenly you're an expert?" August asks. "You're acting like dad, you know? And I-I don't mean that in a good way. You're... the selfish hero. And who was always there to clean up after him? His little brother."
"Hey." They turn to see Geri and Colton walk in.
"Colton." Stella says.
"We didn't get service until we got down the mountain, but as soon as we did..." Geri says, hugging the twins.
"We turned the car around." Colton says, hugging Stella.
"I mean, I think we broke a few laws racing back here, so when your dad's back, definitely gonna have to call in a few favors." Geri says.

Janie walks into her room, letting out a heavy sigh. She walks over and picks up the baseball bat that's stuffed between her bed and her nightstand. She looks over at her dresser, glancing back at the bat.
She raises the bat, prepared to swing, but doesn't. Janie feels the tears well back up and her strength weakens. Janie sits on her bed, staring at the bat.
"I've never even freaking played baseball." She sniffles, dropping the bat onto her bed. She lets some of her tears fall and clamps her hand over her mouth to muffle her cries.

After making sure she looked like she hadn't just had a meltdown, Janie goes downstairs where her siblings, Colton, and Geri are.
"Hey, Colt, are you tired?" Geri asks.
"No." He shakes his head.
"I mean, I can take you back home." Geri offers. "You can get some sleep." Janie stops halfway down the stairs.
"Uh, nah, I think I'm just staying here." Colton says.
"If that's cool." Stella says, seeing Geri's look.
"Y-Yeah. Here." Geri says. "Yeah. No, no, no. That's cool. Cool." She smiles.
Stella grabs Colton's hand and leads him upstairs, passing Janie who awkwardly smiles at them.
"Hey. I mean, I'm totally out of my league here." Geri quietly says. "Th-They're... is this fine?"
"Yeah, I--" August shrugs.
"I mean, they're-they're technically adults. Right?" Geri says.
"Yeah, I-I guess. Uh..." August mumbles, both looking to the top of the stairs.
"Ooh, sad cookies." Janie notices, sitting at the island and taking some of a cookie. "Thank you." She tells Geri.
"Yeah. Yeah, of course." She smiles at the youngest Walker.
"You don't have to stay. I'm fine. We're fine." August says, motioning to his twin.
"Hm? Oh, ye-yeah, totally. We're fine." Janie nods, biting into the cookie. "Totally didn't... almost wreck my room again." She mumbles.
"I know. I know that you're fine. But I'm not." Geri states. "I'm just not. So, if-if it's all the same, then, um, I think I'm gonna stay, too."
"Okay." August nods.
"I love you." Geri says.
"Love you, too." August says as Geri kisses him on the head and hugs him.
"Yeah, no, I'm cool." Janie remarks.
"And I love you." Geri says, walking around the island and hugging her, kissing her on the head.
"Love you, too." Janie quietly says, hugging her back with one arm.

Shaman
*** Let's get this clear now: the MC is a trans woman. This is not a gender-bender. It's set in a fantasy world but the exploration of identity and gender is reality-based. Not a joke, not a kinky turn-on. If this is a problem for you, please just act like an adult and look elsewhere for something to read. *** Rating breakdown, since that should be public info: 2 x 5*, 1 x 4.5*, 1 x 3*, no reasons offered. A human shaman and healer returns from several years with the mysterious shyani, accompanied by her shapeshifting puma best friend. A valued friend, from her previous identity as a male student physician, has acquired an old shyani book, and extremists will not tolerate its presence in human hands. But back in human lands, the question arises: which world does she belong in? Generations ago, human explorers found a continent inhabited by an utterly alien culture of shapeshifting weyres and the shyani, humanoids who prefer dusk and dawn. A truce of sorts was eventually reached: humans claimed the rich lowlands, and the shyani and weyres retain the highlands. Along the border, practicality often rules, but on either side, old grudges linger in some hearts. As a student physician, Corin tried to take his own life, unable to bear the countless tiny wounds inflicted over twenty-one years of lying to himself in order to be, or pretend to be, socially acceptable. At the last improbable instant, intervention came, in the form of a spirit fox, who led him away from the existence he’d known in the lowlands and into the highlands. There, a puma weyre rescued him, and a shyani shaman helped him find his true self and offered a rebirth, a life with no more lies, and an important role to fill. Now a shaman and healer in her own right, Vixen who was once Corin learns that the one human who mattered to her in her previous life, then a fellow University student, has come into possession of an old shyani book, and the more fanatical shyani and weyres will stop at nothing to reclaim it and punish Jared. Even though it means going back into the lowlands and facing Jared as a woman, she can’t bear to just look the other way. This should be a short visit, just long enough to see the book into the proper hands and make sure Jared will not be killed for having it, and then she can return to the shyani community that has accepted her as their shaman. And, of course, her feline best friend Dayr insists on coming with her. But Jared is now a Lord, with considerable wealth and power, and his response to her presence isn’t one she expected. After years living with the shyani, she sees everything around her from a new perspective, and that makes it difficult to keep to the plan of making as few waves as possible. As an honoured guest in a highborn house, with only Jared aware that she has ever been anyone else, Vixen finds herself questioning where she belongs: with Dayr and the shyani, who accept her gender without question but have to make allowances for her differences, or with humans, in the culture she grew up in even though her past would mean a major scandal? *** Trigger warning: there are scenes of Vixen's previous life, which include some difficult moments and culminate in an (obviously unsuccessful) attempt at suicide before she finds her true self and a better life. Please be careful! This is the ONLY reason for the "Traumatising Content" tag.*** Complete stand-alone novel, 96K words. Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
