"Uh oh!" Pope calls out to the stranded girls. "You forget your keys or something?"
"I half expected one of you to be dead." I joke.
"You need a tow?" John B teases. "You gotta admit, it was kinda funny."
"John B." Kie stops his teasing.
"Uh, what's that?"
"Mastermind, huh?" Kie questions.
"I'm always plannin'." John B states truthfully.
"Some patriarchal bullshit." Kie snaps.
"Yeah, that sucked." Sarah agrees.
"You still love us though, right?" JJ asks tossing Kie the tope to tie the boats together.
"Yeah, whatever." Sarah says.
"Hey, you still hate me?" JB asks Sarah.
"A little. We're both gonna get you back when you least expect it."
"Watch your back, Boys."
The boys all glance at each other. "Well, I for one accept that challenge." Pope says.
"I have no part in this." I put my hands up in surrender.
"So, did you guys, you know.."
"Reconcile our differences?" Kie asks, finishing my brother's questions. "Not even close."
"But, we're willing to work together."
"You know what?" John B says. "That's victory."
"Yep." JJ agrees. "Know why? Hydroponic."
"Don't say that." Pope tells him.
"All right, shut up." John B orders. "You guys ready to jack someone up?"
A smile breaks out on both girls faces. They both climb into the HMS Pogue. "Yeah, whatever." Kie says.
We head back to the Chateau to get the van to drive to the Crain House.
"Alright, you guys got rope?" John B checks from the front seat. I ride in the passenger seat next to him.
"Yep."
"Grappling hook?"
"No grappling hook." Pope answers. "We're not Batman."

"Pulley."
"Check." Kie responds.
"Dark clothes?"
"Yes, JB." I confirm.
"Flashlights?"
"Check."
"All right, good. We're ready."
"Let's go." Kie says as we pull in front of the Crain house.
"Let's go get rich, guys." JJ says.
"Yeah, hell yeah." Kie agrees.
"Let's go, guys." I was pumped up. I was nervous and terrified, but now that we had a real chance of finding the gold I was excited.
"Wait, wait." John B stops us. A silence fills the van. We wait for him to speak up, staring at him.
"What?" I demand impatiently.
"I wanna say thank you, guys. Seriously. It means a lot that you're here tonight."
Kie rolls her eyes with a knowing smile. "Always."
John B chuckles softly. He looks over to me. "And Kat." He gets my full attention. "I really appreciate that you came. I know we've had our differences lately and that you were really skeptical. So it really means a ton that you decided to come."
"Like you said, I'm your sister. In the end we're family. I wouldn't leave you behind."
A smile breaks out on his face. "Come here." He pulls me into a side hug.
"All right, we done with this circle jerk?" JJ asks suddenly. "Can we go so this?"
"Yeah." Kie answers.
"Let's get that's wheat in the water." Pope agrees.
"Weed? I'm up for weed."
"Wheat, JJ. With a T." I tell him.
I walk up to the stone wall, bracing my hands on it. I hoist myself up onto the wall before sliding over. The Pogue's do the same, following after me. We walk in a line through the yard like we had before.

A porch light flicks on, scaring us. We all scurry to duck down behind some bushes.
"Crap." I say frantically moving behind the plants.
"Shit!" Several people whisper at the same time.
"Go, go, go!"
"Flashlights!" Kie demands.
JJ's flashlight begins to flicker, drawing more attention. "It's on strobe!" He tries to get his flashlight off, stressed.
John B shushes us.
Pope pulls his hood off. "Okay, so she has motion sensor lights."
"We could, uh.. move really slowly, maybe?" JJ tries.
"What?" Sarah asks.
"Yeah, J, it doesn't work like that, babe." I speak up.
"Oh, shit! Let's throw a rock at it." John B says.
"What?" I ask incredulously. "Are you stupid? Why on earth would we let the axe murderer know we're breaking into her basement?"
"Throw a rock at it?" JJ asks.
"That's almost worse than JJ's idea." I say.
"You have a better idea?" My brother asks.
"Literally anything but that." Kie says.
"What about the breaker? In the circuit box on the porch." Sarah questions. "We used to play hide-and-seek here as kids. And if we were brave enough, we'd go all the way up to the porch. I've seen it."
"No, no. You're not going on the house alone." John B responds.
"Watch me."
"Crain chops people into pieces." JJ speaks up.
"If you believe that, but she's like what, 85?"
"Yeah, something like that."
"She's probably barely still kicking."
"Here." Kie looks over to me. "We'll go with you."
"What?" I ask.
"Kat, come on."
"Fine." I sigh.
"Okay, we'll wait for you signal." Pope says.
"Okay, cool." Sarah says as we all stand up.
"Hey! Be safe." John B calls out to Sarah.
"We will." Sarah answers.
JJ looks at Pope, cupping his cheek. "Be safe." He whispers, mocking John B
"I'll be so safe." Pope responds. "I'll be safe for you."
"Can you guys stop? Stop!" John B says.
JJ catches my hand as I start to walk by, stopping me. He pulls me down to him, pressing a kiss against my lips. "Be careful, all right?"
"Okay." I whisper with a small smile.
"Love you."
"Love you."
"Ew." John B says.
"Suck my ass, John B." I say before following the girls.
"God, she's hot." I catch JJ say. I let out a light giggle.

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter. This story isn't a full length novel--its a novella length work (25K words), and is part of my Yancy Lazarus series. Its already free on Amazon, so I thought I'd post chapters here for the good folks of Royal Road. If you don't want to wait for updates or would prefer to read it on Kindle, you can pick it up for free here: https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B01066TLC0
