《Low Tide \ JJ Maybank》Ch 14

John B pulls up to the hotel and parks the car.
"All right, keep a look out." JJ grabs the gun from the glove box of the van. "We're behind enemy lines."
"JJ, we don't need that. Put it back." I say.
"What?" JJ asks loading the gun.
"JJ." My brother says catching his attention.
"You can never be too careful." JJ makes an excuse.
Pope climbs out of the back of the van and sticks his head into the passenger window. "Hey, I predict that bringing a weapon into a four-star hotel will likely cause more problems than they solve.
"Thank you, Pope." John B says.
"I swear to god, I'm gonna throw that thing in the ocean, JJ."
"Oh my god, please do." I beg.
"Put it back!" Kie demands.
John B grabs the gun and shoves it into the glove box.
"You can't grab a gun like that." JJ says. "Can't forget my badge." He climbs out of the car and we start walking toward the building. "Professional bus boy."
"So, what are we doing now?" Pope asks curiously.
"We're getting on the internet because only rich people have internet right now." JJ explains. "This way!"
We walk in through the kitchen. "Andrew!" JJ calls out.
"All right?"
"What's up, bro? Mama L, good to see you." JJ greets an older woman. "See, they got the backup generators going? Kooks don't miss a beat." We walk into the lobby area.
JJ leads us into another room. Pope runs at the computers excitedly.
"Sweet lord, the internet! I've missed you!"
"Hey, hey, hey." John B reaches into his backpack, pulling out a map. "I got the map." He places it on the desk next to Pope.
"Coordinates, please?"
"34, 57', 30" north. 75, 55' 42" west."
Pope types it into Earth Search. It zooms in quickly.
"Boom, continental shelf right there."
"Well, if it's off the deep end, it's not gonna be much of a treasure hunt, is it?" Pope points out.
Voices from outside the room pull my focus from the computer. JJ looks too. I look at him. He shakes his head looking back to the computer. Pope zooms in on the location.

"Shit, it's on the the high side. It's only 900 feet." John B says.
"That's not too deep." JJ agrees.
"Is that doable or something?" Kie asks softly.
"Yeah, totally doable."
"Okay, will we be taking your personal submarine?" Pope questions sarcastically.
"How do you know this, Mr. Dive Master?" John B asks JJ.
"The salvage yard." JJ answers. "They got a drone that can drop 1,000. It has a 360 camera and everything. It's for like, deep dives and stuff. It's exactly what we need."
"Wait, that's actually a good idea." I say agreeing.
"Can your dad get his grimy little hands on that?" JB asks.
"John B." I warn.
"Well, my dad's grimy little hands got his ass fired." JJ answers. "I guess the salvage captain frowns on showing up shitfaced, turns out?" I give John B a pointed look, annoyed he brought up JJ's father. "But the drone's there. It's in the impound yard out back.
"How much did you say was on the Royal Merchant?" Kie asks.
"400 mil." John B and JJ say at the same time.
"400 million dollars?" Kie asks in disbelief.
"Yep."
Pope moves to block us from leaving the room. He stands in front of the door with his hands spreading across the frame. "No. Absolutely not. Absolutely not! No!"
"Pope, get out of the way." I demand.
When he doesn't move Kiara grabs him, and moves him out of the way of the door. "Move!"
"Guys, that's too-"
"Come on." Kie cuts him off.
"Can't we do anything legal for money?" Pope asks exasperated.
"Go." John B finally shoves him out of the room.
We all make our way back down to the car and pile into the van. John B starts the car and makes his way to the salvage yard.
"'Humans are the only animal that can't tell fantasy from reality.'"
"Wait, did you come up with that?" John B asks from the drivers seat.
"Albert Bernstein came up with it, but it applies to this whole treasure-hunting thing."

"Oh."
"That's the lamest thing I ever heard, Pope." I say.
"So, which is it? Fantasy or reality?"
"Why are you so weird, Pope?" JJ asks playing with a blunt.
"It's fantasy, but possible reality." Kie answers Pope's question from the passenger seat.
"Reality." John B says looking at her.
I shake my head, I still wasn't sure what we were doing entirely.
Kie smiles at him.
"Virtual reality." JJ says flicking his lighter open and closed. He goes to light the blunt in his mouth but I take it from between his lips and toss it behind me.
"Keep the signal clear." Pope says to my boyfriend. JJ shuts his lighter, annoyed.
John B stops the van outside the salvage yard. Kie climbs out while Pope and JJ continue to argue.
"You know what your problem is? JJ asks.
"You?" Pope spits.
"No. It's that you need to relax man. You're always so tense."
"I'm not too tense."
"You kinda are." I agree with JJ.
"Kat, you're supposed to be on my side." Pope tells me.
"Yeah, if only you knew, bud." JJ says.
"Okay, you know what? You both just need to stop talking. Pope, you are too tense, but J, sometimes you're too lax and it's not always a good thing." I say ending their conversation.
John B leans out the window, catching Kie's attention as she walks away. "Hey! Don't worry. You got this." He encourages.
"It's not me that I'm worried about." She motions to where Pope, JJ and I were sitting. I climb into the front seat so she can see me.
"Don't worry, I've got them under control."
"Mama Kat will get her boys under control."
"Oh I'll throw hands with both of them."
Kie walks away, moving to do her part of the plan.
"Let's hope this works." JB mumbles.
"Hey, we can do this." I say to him.
We all get out of the van and hide in the scrapyard. I stand between my boyfriend and my brother.
"How's it going with Kiara?" JJ asks my twin.
"JJ, that's what you're thinking about right now?" I mumble with a light laugh.
"It's not awkward, weird or anything."
JJ snorts. "Honestly I did not think you were gonna actually listen to me."
"What?"
"I was 100 percent sure she was into you."
"Honestly, I did too." I agree. "You guys are always so weird."
"What like you and Pope?" John B asks me.
"Oh absolutely not." I answer trying not to burst out laughing. "I promise I have no interest in Pope."
"Maybe Kie's just into somebody else." Pope speaks up.
The three of us turn to look at him.
I look back up at Kie, she had the man facing away from us. "Guys, let's move!" I whisper before making a run for it. The boys follow after me.
We run along the fence line, in front of the cars in the parking lot. We make our way through the gate as it closes, just barely making it. We run through the salvage yard, unseen. We end up in front of a shed with a large padlock. JJ grabs it, spinning the wheels to get the combination. He tugs on the lock aggressively but it won't open.
"Have the right numbers?" Pope asks.
"All right, so I might have the wrong numbers." JJ turns away from the door.
"Ah, damn it!" Pope curses.
A dog makes me jump as it barks loudly, running at the four of us.
"Oh! Hey!" JJ calls out.
"That's a cougar." John B says running away.
"That's a dog, JB." I say following him.
We hide around the side of the shed, out of the dogs sight. My breath comes out heavy from all the running. John B peeks around the corner before moving out of the hiding spot. He grabs a metal pipe and tries to smash the lock.
"Yes." He cheers as the lock releases.
We walk inside and grab the cases the drone was in. John B hands me the smaller box before we run off to the car.

My Girlfriend, the Necromancer
The power of the Orb cleaves the skies and shatters the earth. It heralds the advent of a new era, one where humanity is no longer at the top of the food chain and we must rise to the challenge when faced with our own extinction as a species. I could hardly care less. All I ever wanted was to love my Allie, to grow old and wrinkly by her side as I held her hand before taking my last breath on this green earth. To have our love echo through the ages, an ode to the last great love story on the planet, one that would endure the end of humanity, the breaking of the world, and even defy the dread summons of Death itself. It’s said that when the gods unleash their fury upon mortal kind, they grant their wishes. Well, crap. This is a gritty end of the world survival story with modern fantasy/romance/game-like elements in it. The main focus will be character development while stats and menus are there as a fun vehicle to empower the imagination. This is a work in progress and I deeply appreciate any helpful suggestions, so please don't be shy with input! Currently posting at least one chapter per week.

8 64The Card Thief of Culnivar
Deep with the cozy kingdom of Daeton, among the generation-old farmlands and villages, a young farmer’s daughter stumbles upon a dead man. His elaborate clothing has been torn to ribbons, yet his skin remains unblemished. His face is peaceful, and tucked into the hand lying across his chest can be seen a solitary playing card. He is a Ludum Haeres. The last remnant of a Summoner. Numbered among those few capable of changing their destinies. The unseen rulers of the world known as Vesperia, and one of the most powerful creatures in existence. The woman knows none of this. And so, she picks up the card... This is my third novel on Royal Road, the first being "Beyond the Horizon's Eye", and the second being "The Dawnfire Archives". This story is something of a test in a new genre, that of CardLIT. We'll see how well it succeeds as the story continues. It takes place in a different setting than my other tales, with an entirely new cast of characters. It does, however, contain several ties between the stories. Average post between 1000 - 3000 words.

8 145Knights of the Partition
We like to think there are no monsters. No magic, no gods, nothing waiting in the night but the stars and cold, hard science. It’s a comforting thought. It isn't true. Magic isn't common, mind you. Working forces is difficult in the Age of Man, and gods are limited in the ways they interact with the world. The great monsters of old have mostly been slain, or sealed away. But rare or not, the magic isn't gone. The great Working that protects us from the horrors of the past does not have the power to destroy such things. Instead, it created the Partition, a tapestry of worlds beyond the boundary of our own. There the magic roams, searching for a way to come back. I am a Knight of Avalon. One of the protectors of the Partition. How did I get this job? Poor decisions, mostly.
