《Hello, Inside Monster》CHAPTER LXI: IT’S TIME FOR SOME TRUTHS

Preoccupied, DooSan looked one more time at the wristwatch: 9.30 a.m, but SolHi wasn’t in the office yet. „Where the hell did she go so early in the morning?” he mumbled, remembering that awakening in the morning, about 5 a.m, to drink water, he realized that SolHi wasn’t anymore in the apartment and that she actually didn’t even spend the night there and a witness of this was the bed untouched.

This made him lose his sleep, having specific thoughts in his head about if he had done well a few hours ago, acting coldly with her when the day before he told her to trust him because there were feelings between them and that they must work as a team to solve Nam Yun Ho’s case. Hours later instead, he did the opposite: he acted coldly, indifferently, if not cruel with her, and this probably made her think that she hadn’t anybody left by her side. That’s why DooSan felt something pressing on his chest: it was the guilt. Otherwise, he had no other explanation for what he was feeling.

Actually, in those few hours till the dawn, because he couldn’t sleep and more knowing SolHi there, outside, in the street, while it was still night, where could happen everything to her and she could be in danger, DooSan had thought about many things, especially about him, for he had understood that he had hurried when he trusted the words of a drunk man, even if that one knew YuSan. He should have trusted YuSan yet, for he knew him almost his entire life, who has always been by his side in tough moments and on who he could count always. But… it has been necessary a few words of an unknown person to accuse his brother of something and he started to doubt, and not only doubt of his brother but also of the woman he got to know.

That’s why he decided to talk to SolHi about the last night and make peace with her, for he thought that it’ll be better to first find out the truth, to find clear evidence, and only then to ask for an explanation. But even if he was waiting for half an hour in front of the Prosecution building already, she wasn’t coming.

„Come on, SolHi, come at once!” he mumbled preoccupied, glancing once again at his watch. „Don’t make me feel even worrier than I already am.”

And finally, he saw her passing by the guardian’s booth, who she seemed not to see, for she didn’t greet him as she used to, even if the guardian, a man about 50, put his hand to his hat, greeting her. And she had why not to see him, for she seemed immersed in thoughts, nervous, even if she forced herself to seem calm.

Seeing her coming toward the entrance, DooSan rushed to meet her halfway and decided to talk to her before entering the building, where others could be suspicious about them and, curious, to look at them with the eyes of a hungry eagle.

„SolHi, where have you been?” DooSan asked her, getting only one step from her. But even if he grabbed her by arm, intending to stop her, SolHi released her arm with a quick movement and headed at a fast pace to the entrance without even looking back, even if the anger and the disappointment could be seen on her face, for she considered that DooSan betrayed her as everybody did.

DooSan stood frozen for a few moments, for he had never expected that she would react so violently. But after deeply breathing in when he came a little bit to his senses, he ran after her and, grabbing her by arm again, he said: „SolHi, what’s wrong with you?”

Forced to stop, SolHi swallowed hard. After this, she tried to release her arm again. But this time, DooSan was somehow squeezing it, not to allow her to go. „DooSan, let me go! There’s neither the place nor the moment.”

„I think it is because… what’s this? Blood?” he asked concerned, seeing blood on her left hand and clothes. „SolHi, what’s this? Are you hurt? What…?” he kept mumbling preoccupied and thunderstruck, that he didn’t even realize that he was about to lift her T-shirt to check if she was hurt.

Her scream instead: „Han DooSan, stop it!” and later the fact that she pushed him hard, away from her, made him suddenly react and stare at her. SolHi instead was shuddering with all her body and her eyes, which were red because of so much crying, stared at him somehow with hatred: „Stop pretending so much!” she hissed through her teeth. „That’s enough! I think that’s enough, Han DooSan: to make fun of me, to consider me an idiot capable to fall into your arms each time you feel the need to „play” with me. That’s enough!”

„To play? SolHi, to play? When did I…?”

„All this time, for… you didn’t do anything else than be by my side, pretending that you care about me, that you are preoccupied with me, that you want me to be happy. And I… like a perfect stupid… I believed in miracles. But… as it always happened: it’s time to wake up, for… I’m not a princess from a fairy-tale and neither you are the prince on a white horse. That’s why, Han DooSan, since today… our paths separate once and for all. That’s why… I want you out of my house and my life… once and forever.”

And she simply turned her back on him, heading toward the entrance of the prosecution, for, the night before, she decided one thing: to completely forget about love, feelings, and people, and focus only on her work, for it was the single thing that never betrayed her.

Behind her, DooSan kept staring like an idiot, seeing her leaving and understanding yet that even if he hurt her the night before, it hasn’t been that much to be pushed aside like a dog or ask him to vanish from her life. But… he hadn’t time to chew his pain because she saw detectives Gi, So, and Mo, approaching SolHi, who kept approaching them as if she didn’t see them. However… something in the manner of acting of the detectives and especially in Gi’s glance caught DooSan’s sight and he became concerned. That’s why he hurried to approach them and he get next to them when Gi said: „detective Ian? You are arrested for Do Ian Jun’s murder… you have the right to have a lawyer… and if you can’t afford one… a public defender,” and the words were heard both by DooSan and SolHi like in a dream while Gi handcuffed SolHi and forced her to follow him toward their car, stopped not that far from the entrance on the Prosecution’s yard.

„SolHi!” DooSan suddenly screamed, jerking from his place and trying to catch up with the detectives and impede them to take her with them. But Mo stepped in front of DooSan, trying to stop him. That’s why DooSan started to push him away, acting like a crazy person that couldn’t normally think. But he couldn’t release from Mo’s hands because Kan suddenly showed up next to them and helped Mo not to let DooSan leave.

SolHi instead didn’t look back even for a second, as if she hadn't cared anymore about what could happen to her. And neither when they were already in the car and Gi pressed the gas pedal, she didn’t look through the window, toward the place where DooSan was still fighting with Kan and Mo, desperately trying to get at her.

„It’s over!” she only murmured, making So, who was next to her, look thunderstruck at her. „It’s finally over… the nightmare and the running, Ian SolHi,” SolHi thought. „They caught you, even if you desperately tried to run off that divine punishment for taking someone’s life. It was the time, for… damn, it’s so damn difficult to lie them all and yourself!” and she smiled, with that weird smile sketched on her face, as if she was a real serial killer that was blaming herself for being that stupid to allow other to catch her, even if she seemed to have done devilish things to run away from the reality and from the entire world.

„Ian SolHi has been arrested for murder!” A Rim shouted, entering the office. Her scream made inspector Yu, Yoon Suk, and SuJin suddenly stand up and stare at her as if they saw the devil.

„What the hell are you talking about, A Rim?” Yu finally managed to ask her, coming back to his senses. „What do you keep mumbling there? How could they arrest SolHi for crime? Let’s not invent things.”

„I don’t invent anything, inspector. It’s the reality. The Kanam police came after her and handcuffed her right in front of the Prosecution Building.”

Yoon Suk and SuJin jumped from their places, intending to go. They stopped half away instead when Kan entered. That’s why approached him in a hurry.

„Sombe, what the hell A Rim talks about? What crime? What happens to SolHi?”

„It’s the truth, Yoon Suk. SolHi has been arrested for killing a former colleague. His name was Do Ian Jun. And… they didn’t arrest her for anything, for… there are her fingerprints on the crime weapon and the blood seen on SolHi’s clothes seemed to also be his.”

Yoon Suk fell on his butt to the ground, staring thunderstruck around. SuJin put his hands over his head, also staring at a blind spot, somewhere in front of him while Kan looked to the ground, with tears in his eyes, for even if Gi told him about SolHi’s arrest, half an hour before this happened and he finally decided to step on his ego and his principles as a detective, and he tried to contact SolHi and to tell her to run, he couldn’t find her, for she had her phone turned off. And this made him regret a lot what happened the night before: that he brought DooSan with Do Ian Jun, that they didn’t talk later with SolHi about what happened, and that he also asked DooSan to keep silent. Now he even blamed himself for that crime, thinking that it happened because of him.

„And… prosecutor Han, where is he?” Yu asked eventually.

„He accompanied detective Mo to Kanam Station, for… he doesn’t believe that’s real. He… needs evidence to believe that SolHi did that.”

Yoon Suk suddenly jerked to his feet and left the office.

„Yoon Suk, wait!” Kan shouted, intending to follow him.

Yu stopped him instead „Let him alone, Kan! He needs time to understand this. That’s why: let’s go to Kanam station. It also seems weird to me. I don’t think SolHi could do that.”

Kan only nodded in agreement and headed toward the door, followed by Yu.

SuJin wanted to follow them, but he has been stopped by A Rim: „you stay here, Yu SuJin!”

„But, Nuna…?”

„If she’s innocent, inspector Yu and the others will prove this, for they can investigate this while you’ll only be a burden there. So: stay here and let others try to understand this madness.”

After she finally saw SuJin sitting at his desk, A Rim also sat down. But… she couldn’t calm down, for… even if she always accused SolHi of YuSan’s crime and that she treated her badly, she felt sorrow for the detective at that moment, even if she also didn’t know why did she feel that. And… something was telling her that’s not everything like it seems to be, for… did SolHi is so stupid to allow others catch her that easy even if she killed that man? More… she left the crime weapon to be found so easily, next to the dead one when 7 years ago when she has been accused of YuSan’s murder almost all the evidence about her have been indirect. No, it was too easy to believe it, and this could mean only one thing: SolHi has been again framed. Or… maybe not?!

***

„What does it mean that I can’t see her, Gi? What the hell are we talking about?” DooSan shouted when Gi stepped in front of him and didn’t allow him to enter the interrogatory room where SolHi was at that moment.

„I’m sorry, prosecutor Han, but due to your relationship with Ian SolHi, I can’t allow you to see her! More than this: till the prosecutor in charge doesn’t decide what…”

„The prosecutor in charge? What the hell are you talking about? I’m the prosecutor here. I…”

„Maybe you are a prosecutor, Han DooSan, but this case is mine,” they all heard San DuSik’s voice behind them and this made DooSan make a wry face. „And… while this case is mine, I have the right to decide as I want. That’s why Ian SolHi goes to jail today. Finally: after 7 years, I can make justice for prosecutor Han YuSan, the one forgotten by his brother because of a…”

„You… trash and…,” shouted DooSan, intending to approach DuSik and punch him. But Gi and other detectives immobilized DooSan, not allowing him to approach the other, who was more than obvious that he hates like hell and that could be also noticed from DooSan's manner of talking, who kept yelling at his enemy, insulting, and threatening him.

They all kept silent when Mo entered the section, having a file in his hand which he kept above his head: „it’s Do Ian Jun’s blood on the culprit’s clothes.”

Everybody froze. Are you sure?” asked Gi in a half a voice.

„Evidence doesn’t lie,” said Mo, but so much regret was felt in his voice at that moment, for he really got to care about SolHi and he also felt sorry for her after Nam Yun Ho’s intent of hurting her. Now instead… with this new crime… it was too much even for him to chew and to understand everything as also to decide by whose side to be.

DuSik has been yet the only lucid person at that moment and, approaching Mo, he grabbed the file, hissing through his teeth: „lucky me! Now Ian SolHi doesn’t leave alive from here!” and he headed toward the interrogatory room, grinning, more than happy that life gave him a chance to strike DooSan the coup of grace, for he was more than sure that DooSan was in love with her and that seeing her knocked down it would have also meant sure defeat for him.

Behind him, DooSan pushed the other detectives away from him. But he has been followed only by Kan and Yu, who were entering the section at the moment DuSik said what he said, and they understood one more thing: SolHi’s life was over, and DooSan could completely lose his mind if to be left alone, or maybe if they leave him alone he could also go to jail for killing San DuSik.

***

A file thrown on the table made SolHi wince and stare at DuSik, who was staring at her with a large smile drawn on his face, of pleasure. „Finally, I have you in my paws, bitch!” he hissed eventually through his teeth, supporting his palms on the table and staring into her eyes. „And you’ll finally pay for that slap you gave to me, for… I never forget what others did to me.”

SolHi ironically smiled and looked elsewhere: „he remembers only what it’s convenient for him when the one slapped then has been me.”

This drove DuSik crazy who, in a moment of raving, approached her and pushed her so hard that she turned upside down with the chair and, because SolHi had a hand chained by the table's leg, falling, she gnashed her teeth, for the cuff hurt her wrist very well.

Yet, SolHi made no sound: she hadn't even gasped because of pain as it should have been. She only gnashed her teeth again and, supporting herself with the other palm, she managed eventually to stand up. Then, saying nothing, she also raised the chair and sat down on it.

Her calmness made DuSik rage, who suddenly grabbed her by the clothes and threatened her with punching her. He stopped, however, with his hand raised in the air, and only hissed through his teeth: „bitch! How can you be so calm after sending another man to the other world? You should bow your head and kiss my legs, begging for saving your ass.”

SolHi said nothing. She only stared into his eyes as if she had provoked him: „what?” DuSik shouted. „Do you think I’m going crazy?”

But she didn’t answer him and looked elsewhere, even if she wanted to tell him so many things. However, she knew well that it wasn’t any point to say something, for a man like San DuSik, ,,trash" as others called him, saw in her falling his chance to fly up and, to be sure that he’ll make it, he was ready to trample her under his feet as if she was just a beetle.

Actually, what SolHi really wanted at that moment, was peace. Yes, to be left alone and to pay for what she did, for those results were real: the blood on her hands and clothes was Do Ian Jun’s, as the fingerprints found on the knife. Also… she had no intention to make San DuSik’s work easier or explain to him what or why did this happen and why Do Ian Jun eventually died… apparently killed by her. But also… SolHi wasn’t that sure that she wasn’t guilty of his death, for… she didn’t remember too much of the last night: she felt her mind blurred, her body hurt her, and she was confused for experiencing once again that nightmare - of being again brought in front of justice, accused of a crime. But at least she walked on her own feet this time and they didn’t take her on pieces from inside of an abandoned house and… it was something else different this time - she won’t see DooSan’s mad eyes while trying to kill her into Intensive Care Room to take revenge on her.

And… all those words spun in her head over and over again while DuSik was yelling like a mad person at her, accusing her of every single evil thing that happened, insulting her, and hitting with the file on the desk or punching it, trying to intimidate her, to make her accept her guilt, and to easily finish his job.

SolHi instead kept silent… she was silent like a fish out of water, convinced that silence will avoid a lot of headaches in the future, even if doing this she only stained her name even more.

Suddenly, silence took over the surroundings… so suddenly actually when the door hit hard the wall. SolHi instead didn’t look back… she wasn’t interested in who came. But… seeing DuSik’s face, she could understand that the newcomer was someone who prosecutor San didn’t want to see there or maybe he hated that person. „DooSan?” she wondered. But no… it wasn’t him, for she knew his footsteps, she knew his smell, and even the breathing. No, it wasn’t him. This one was someone unknown to her or maybe she knew him, but not that well.

Yet, she winced when she heard captain Lee’s voice, telling DuSik confidently: „Ian SolHi is our, boy!” and this made DuSik shake like hell.

„Don't fret my nerves!” yelled DuSik, not remembering about politeness or such stuff at that moment. „This case belongs to me. It’s mine. Only mine and I won’t let this bitch go out of here without paying for everything, for…”

„Watch your tongue,” demanded Lee. „There’s nothing proved yet. So, till new evidence, you can’t say that someone is guilty. And… it was your case till… 5 minutes ago?! Now… it’s our case!”

DuSik grinned: „your case? And since when do those from Organized Crime investigate a not such important crime?”

„Since Ian SolHi killed one of the most dangerous drug dealers we were looking for. So… Buffalo, give the document to me!”

SolHi frowned: „drug dealer? Do Ian Jun? What the…?” she kept silent instead and again winced when Lee threw on the desk, in front of her and of DuSik, a file, enough thick, and on the first page of it, DuSik saw a document signed by the General Attorney where he was accepting transferring the case to the Organized Crime Department. The reason: top secret.”

***

„Do this all seem weird only to me?” Yu asked Kan in a whisper, turning his head to the right.

Kan said nothing. He only stared at DooSan, who was sitting on the desk, with his arms crossed on his chest and looking to the ground. „I don’t know,” he said eventually. „To be honest, I have no damn idea about what happens, especially with Han DooSan.”

„With prosecutor Han? Why?”

„Because… not that long ago he was damn furious because of San DuSik. But now… he’s so calm. Only look at him: he didn’t even blink when San DuSik passed in front of him, saying bad words about SolHi. But… what preoccupies me more is the phone call. Who the hell did prosecutor Han call that not even 10 minutes after those from Organized Crime showed up, saying that SolHi’s case is theirs?”

„Yes, this was damn quickly and damn twisted. Yet: do you think that SolHi… killed that man? Do Ian Jun or what the hell his name was.”

„I don’t know, ok? I don’t know anything right now,” Kan hissed through his teeth and headed toward the coffee machine, for he needed at least a strong coffee to concentrate if he couldn’t drink something for being at his job.

Yu instead didn’t calm down: he only looked at Kan, who kicked the coffee machine, seeing that it swallowed his money, but didn’t give him the coffee. Then, the inspector approached Gi, who was not that far from him, talking to Mo and So. But they kept silent when they saw the inspector approaching them, and when he was only one step from them, Mo and So went in a hurry.

„What’s going on, Gi?” asked Yu preoccupied.

„About?”

„Everything. First, you arrested SolHi for a crime that she is supposed to have committed. Later, coming here, we found out in amazement that the Organized Crime Department will investigate this. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Or… am I wrong?”

„I don’t know what you are talking about,” Gi tried to avoid the answer.

„Yeah, right,” mumbled Yu upset, for it wasn’t the first case he was investigating. That’s why he followed Gi, catching up with him in the hall where he grabbed the detective’s arm, hissing through his teeth: „Who exactly accused SolHi of this crime? Did again Queen Teeth do this?”

Gi instead disliked the hint and stared upset at Yu: „do we look as if being that stupid?”

„No, stupid you aren’t. You only act like one, doing things behind someone’s back. So: who did accuse SolHi?”

„Do Ian Jun’s mother, ok? And… it isn’t for anything, for… her son always accused SolHi of all his problems.”

„And only because of this did you decide to send someone behind the bars? Because that „one’s life” has been destroyed by someone? For God’s sake, Gi, that guy seemed to be out of reality, for… he was upset with SolHi for accusing him of stalking and because of this he couldn’t work again as a teacher.”

„And do you think we don’t know this?”

„Then?”

„She saw her there, Ok? His mother saw SolHi there, right after the crime. And… Do Ian Jun has mentioned her name before dying.”

„Damn it!”

„Don’t damn that much, ok? Or what: do you think that’s easy for us to investigate this case? She’s our colleague for God’s Sake. We know her since she started to work here. We know what kind of girl she is.”

„Yet, it seems that you try to demonstrate the contrary, Gi.”

„There is evidence, ok? Evidence that incriminates her. Real evidence, Yu, not bullshit. There are her fingerprints on the crime weapon and the victim’s blood on her clothes. More than this: SolHi says nothing, and this does everything to be even more difficult to investigate, for… if she had told us at least where she had been the night before if she had tried at least invent an alibi, she would have given us the chance to try to save her. But she… ties everybody by the hands doing this.”

„Do you want not to scream?” said Yu through his teeth, seeing the other detectives staring at them.

„And how do you want me to react then when you only accuse me of being cruel?”

„Explaining. For example: how the hell did this case get to be investigated by the Organized Crime Department? It’s just an unimportant crime, Gi. Such crimes aren’t something to be investigated by Lee and his… men.”

„Then… go and ask Lee about this, and stop yelling at me, for I have enough problems over my head with you and especially with Ian SolHi, who couldn’t control herself and who seems to have killed someone now, if she didn’t kill 7 years ago too, but she fooled us all around.”

Yu wanted to punch him. But he stopped and only stared with hatred at Gi while the detective did the same, for he was really confused and also hurt to see that he was the one accused of being cruel and indifferent when he did what he could for SolHi to save her for going to jail this time, for he saw her as being a daughter for him.

***

Two hours later, Ian SolHi has been taken out of Kanam Police Station and put into the black van of those from Organized Crime. But something that shocked everybody has been her declaration, written and signed by her hand: „I… Ian SolHi, accept my guilt of cruelly killing Do Ian Jun. The reason: revenge, for… I hated him to death.”

And her acceptance hit everybody on the top of the head, leaving them thunderstruck and looking at a blind spot in front of them. But who really drove crazy her declaration has been Han DooSan, for… except for Do Ian Jun’s crime, SolHi also recognized that day that 7 years ago she really killed Han YuSan because someone has paid her to do this. Yet: who asked for Han YuSan’s death remained a secret for everybody because SolHi didn't say who paid her for doing this.
