《Azure Chronicles》Chapter 13: Burning Skirmish

Scarlett squinted her eyes at the dust cloud as Lola continued to carry her and Snow away. Scarlett noticed a rectangular-shaped purple light starting to form inside the dust cloud. The figure pulled its arm back, causing the purple light to move around as well, before violently slicing the air horizontally and a giant purple fire blade cut through the dust cloud. Scarlett frantically tried to warn Lola about the fire blade but kept fumbling her words while trying to get Lola's attention. Scarlett wiggled her arms around until she managed to get one of them free. She frantically patted Lola on the back of the head and managed to get her attention.
Lola turned her head and her eyes widened when she noticed the rapidly approaching blade of fire. She quickly pushed herself off the ground and spun around, while positioning Scarlett and Snow behind her. Lola aimed both her arms in front of her while forming an ice magic circle. Ice formed on the ground before multiple ice walls sprouted from the ice-coated ground. The fire blade managed to slice through half of the walls before it inexplicably exploded and evaporated all the ice walls. The resulting steam cloud violently shot out in every direction and was strong enough to send the trio flying.
The girls were hurled through the air in different directions. Lola frantically flailed her arms while trying to form an ice magic circle, that kept shattering before completion. Lola covered her eyes as she was moments away from colliding with the ground. But before she could hit the ground, Zalroth slid, moving so fast it caused the air to ripple around him, behind Lola before grabbing the back of Lola's dress and, as gently as he could, hoisted her upwards. Lola abruptly opened her eyes from the sudden jolt in movement before having an arm wrapped around her. Lola awkwardly looked upwards at her father, with Scarlett and Snow under his other arm, and slowly chuckled while slightly averting her gaze. Zalroth quickly glanced over at the thing that seemed to have attacked the group, as its metallic footsteps drew closer, making Zalroth sigh.
"You three alright?". Scarlet stated she was, along with the still sleeping Snow, while Lola slowly nodded her head. Zalroth smirked as he looked over at the now stationary figure.

"Sorry about these three; if they happened to intrude into your ter-". Scarlett and Lola attempted to look up at Zalroth, but he suddenly tossed all of them into the air and his black sun tattoo started to glow. A giant wave of purple flames raged through the area, scorching the trees and grass it collided with. Lola, Scarlett and Snow spun sporadically, as they flew upwards into the air. Their ascent stopped followed by them starting to fall. A wide magic barrier formed below them before they fell too far.
Lola got onto her knees before placing her face on the barrier while putting her hands over her eyes like binoculars. She squinted her eyes at the spot directly below her while Scarlett was moving Snow to the centre of the barrier. The flames slowly died down with only a few small embers remaining on the ground and scorched tree trunks. Zalroth lowered his arms as the particlely black aura surrounding his body gathered around his arms and legs. Zalroth smirked while bracing himself.
"This might be fun," Zalroth remarked as he locked eyes with the two glowing purple dots inside the smoke. The figure swiped their arm horizontally and a giant battle-axe fanned the smoke away, revealing the figure to be a floating woman with a scowl. The darkly tanned woman was around the same height as Zalroth with long purple fire hair and was wearing a slightly scantily set of golden templar armour.
Zalroth watched the purple battle axe spin and circle around the women. He squinted his eyes at the large gem cluster that covered the area that connected the blade to the handle. As purple flames started to encase it, the woman grabbed onto her battle-axe before hurling it at Zalroth. He quickly jumped backwards into the air before the battle axe collided into the ground and spewed out waves of purple flames across the ground. Zalroth created a barrier beneath his feet and landed on top of it. Zalroth slammed his foot on the barrier causing it to tilt forwards.
Zalroth and the barrier glowed blue before he launched himself at the women with the blue glow around his body disappearing. The woman, in turn, propelled herself at Zalroth, by firing concentrated flame behind her from her hands. The woman swung her flame covered fist at Zalroth. He dodged the attack by pushing himself downwards with a wind blast. An oval-shaped barrier appeared underneath them allowing Zalroth to knee slide under the woman before he spun around and axe kicking the woman in the back.

The women crashed into the oval barrier causing it to launch Zalroth into the air like a seesaw. The woman angerly stumbled to her feet and gathered purple flame magic around her hand and aimed it at Zalroth. The barrier under her feet quickly spun around and slammed into her hand, causing her to prematurely fire. The fireball exploded, destroying the barrier and sending the women straight to the ground. Zalroth grabbed onto the barrier Lola and the others were on. Lola leaned over the edge of the barrier and looked at Zalroth, who started to heavily breathe.
"Papa, are you alright?". Lola took a cloth out from her tail and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Yeah..." Zalroth replied while watching the woman picking up her axe and absorbing all the flames in the area into the axe while frantically looking around.
"Keep an eye on those crystals while I subdue her.". Lola nodded before moving back to where she was originally situated.
Zalroth let go of the barrier and dropped down to the ground. The women spotted Zalroth before sprinting at him. The woman repeatedly swung her axe with flames spewing out of it and Zalroth countered her barrage by repeatedly punching her axe away. The two of them jumped back from each other before instantly lunging at each other with their arms pulled back. The moment their fist were about to collide, Zalroth dodged out of the way and the woman stumbled a few centimetres before managing to stop herself from falling over. She regained her footing and angerly glared at Zalroth.
"Will you quit messing around it's pissing me off!".
"You sure?". The women's glare became more agitated as Zalroth started to smugly grin.
"What's wrong? You got a short fuse-." Zalroth muttered before barely dodging the battle axe that flew past his head. Zalroth quickly looked between where the axe went and the woman before making a bruh face at her. She clenched the hand she threw the axe with and violently gritted her teeth, making flames spurt between them.
"Don't. Call. Me. Short!" The woman yelled at the top of her lungs as her mana, in the shape of flames, erupted out of her body. Zalroth quickly jumped backwards, when he felt the heat radiating from her aura hit his face. While Zalroth was mid-air, the women instantly dashed in front of Zalroth and sucker-punched him, with a fist covered in fire magic, in the stomach. Zalroth spitted up a little blood before the women went to punch him again.
However, a glowing snowball hit the woman on the back of the head causing it to instantly turn into steam. The moment the woman glanced away from Zalroth, he blasted her away with wind magic and staggered slightly, while covering his mouth. The woman crashed into the ground a few times before backflipping onto her feet. She smirked as she watched blood drops fall from Zalroth's hand, and he painfully let out a single cough.
"What's wrong~ got nothing else to say punk, huh?!". Zalroth lowered his hand making the women's smirk disappear. Zalroth spitted out the blood in his mouth before giving the woman a goofy grin.
"Don't count on it...". The woman strained her arms causing the blood vessels in them to glow bright red, and flames started to swirl around her arms.
"...Shorty~" Zalroth whispered under his breath. The women's eyes violently widened to the point the blood vessels in her eyes expanded.
"I... Told you..." The woman said as she slowly balled her hands into fists.
"Not to call me that!" she yelled before slamming her fist into the ground. The ground cracked under the force of her fist and the flame magic around her fist flooded into the cracks. Zalroth quickly jumped into the air as lava uncontrollably geysered out from the cracks, rapidly fracturing and morphing the terrain as the cracks violently ripped through the ground.

Celestial Spark
Mages traditionally make poor fodder, but with proper training and motivation, possess near limitless potential. For mage teams, the battle camps of the Upper Realms provide both, with missions ranging from orc hunts to political espionage. This tale follows one such team of four who strive to prove themselves in a world that would rather overlook them. Loyalty, honour, and devotion are contrasted by avarice, treachery, and apathy, though at times it can be difficult to separate vice from virtue. For though all people, whether they hail from the peripheries or the kingdom capital, are subjects whose fates are bound to the stars, their choices must be their own. Any comments or questions are welcomed.

Tales from the Triverse
Tales from the Triverse is part detective drama, part fantasy adventure and part space opera. I’m influenced by the likes of Iain M Banks, Isaac Asimov and ND Stevenson and work including The Wire and Gotham Central. It begins with an incident two hundred years ago which crashed three parallel universes together. Portals open up in 18th century London, sending England down a very different path. We pick up events in the 1970s, with the Metropolitan Police having established a new department to handle portal-related criminal activity. The story is about intolerance, immigration, multiculturalism and power. It’s about what happens when incompatible viewpoints are weaponised to seed discontent, and the efforts of some to create a fairer world. In the tradition of the best science fiction, fantasy and crime fiction, I’m using the setting to examine themes that matter to me in the real world. Who is it for?If you like science fiction or fantasy, or a mix of both, this is for you. It’s my first foray into crime fiction, but I hope if you’re a fan that you’ll enjoy yourself - especially if you’re looking for something a bit different. I write fiction that is optimistic, progressive and empathetic. Bad things can happen to good people in the stories, but the overall arc tends to be hopeful. Note that if it were a movie, Tales from the Triverse would be a 15 certificate in the UK.
