《Adventures in Atalok》Fire ball

After warping down to the main hall Allan received a sheet of paper showing the beginner courses to him with a quick look he warped away appearing in front of a door a lecture could be heard on the other side trying to sneak in the door, of course, creaked like a 100 year old door everyone looked back to see the massive nearly 7ft elf while most of the students were shocked the professor looked annoyed. The man was an elf as well however on the short side standing only 4ft 10 the short elf had pointy ears square glasses and looked like some took a dump in his cheerios
“Sir The warriors guild is down the street this is an educational facility not a place for ruffians to barge into”
Taking a large inhale and letting out a sigh Allan began talking back
“I thought the mages guild was smarter than, to judge a book by it's cover this is the second time looking at you are you a gnome or hobbit”
Some of the students began to snicker at the elf
“HOW DARE you I don’t have to take this we are going to the dean”
“We could but I just met him thirty seconds ago and he really liked me then gave me this cool teleport rock thing”
“That stone is for highly talented individuals or staff why do you have it”
With a smirk “I don’t know apparently having INT over 30 and WIS at 20 is considered good so he gave it to me. I mean we could go and talk to him but I don’t like how the teleporting makes me feel”
The moment Spencer as Allan stated his INT the room froze if 10 in a state was considered average at the beginning and most people would get five points from a class and race attributes spencer was an LVL 6 already while not impressive at low when people reached the current cap at 100 he would be considered level 106.
“I… I see we wouldn’t want to disturb him so soon after your admittance. Now where was I”
Taking a seat near the back all by himself the class was surprisingly empty while there were a few students sure the auditorium could seat around 1000 while maybe 50 were currently in the class however this made sense currently this was the beta and most people had already moved on to the main game considering the requirements could be done in 3 game days and they were currently on the 30th. The only requirement was that one must have gear and have joined a guild or faction even the current Spencer could leave due to his proficiency with his fists. But that was not the plan first he would become a mage then move on but something he heard troubled him apparently elemental magic had limited spells which kinda made sense there was only so much one could do with said fire make a wall or a ball the highest rank would be an elemental the trick apparently according to the short elf was to combine with another element such as fire and earth or water and lightning. And from the sounds of it, each element had similar spells with some special spells water had poison splash lightning stun, fire flash bang etc as a bonus each element could also be used to either summon a weapon or buff a current weapon but the most important thing the elf said was internalizing it.

Lightning and the wind could increase speed fire healing and cold resistance etc. While the others were not of much use wind fire and lightning would be exceedingly useful. The next topic was how to actually cast generally speaking one would need to focus on an element eventually being able to sense it then they would focus it into a wand or staff then focus on the form. This process took MP in order to condense it. That led into the topic of staffs vs wands, if they were equal in terms of rank a wand would charge faster while a staff would release more power it was speed vs power, however, there were a third option bear hands. While dangerous and prone to backfire one could condense the element in their hands the advantage was they could release whenever they wanted to be provided they could withstand the power if they couldn't then they would be lucky if they had any hair left. Now that the tutorial was over he began to go into depth on the fire element which had the most offensive power whether it be AoE or one on one fire was scary it was also the only one that could be manipulated after casting but the other magics had ways of dealing with it for this class they would only focus on feeling the fire energy then at the end they would try for a fireball. Due to the fact that he was a traveler this was fast once some instructions had been handed out Which was basically focus on the emotion fire represents to you he could feel it
New skill unlocked elemental sense
The ability to sense Elemental energy LVL 1 0%
Fire 0%
Spenser had done this relatively fast as he opened his eyes he could see a ring of fire around him of course it was small and barely noticeable now all he had to do was focus on living it then take the more advanced courses sitting in a meditative stance he half focused on the fire element if he knew what fire represented water or ice would be opposite focusing on a calm emotion he began to feel another element this one was definitely water
New elemental sense available
Water 0%
After figuring out what to do he quickly figured what the other four were air and earth was freedom and responsibility while lightning was speed and energy ice was lethargy and slowness. Each time he figured one out another ring could be seen though faint and only mages who focused on the elements could see them focusing on all the elements wasn’t that hard for him as he never truly focused on them at all each element was focused on for a fraction of a second before being switched. As spencer continued to meditate in the back students began standing up and walking to the front of the class where they attempted a fireball most attempts were complete failures as this was supposed to take a few days to master then one could learn more magic most would continue on LVL up and gain more INT and WIS go to another guild hall and learn some spells that were the real reason behind why Spenser had learned so fast he was an LVL 6 stated player learning an LVL 0 skill. After getting to a hundred % in the sensing ability he opened his eyes most of the people in the room were at maybe 20-40% some were at 60% on fire. As spencer began to walk down the stairs the last few students were finishing up the last one was a gnome who was only slightly shorter than the teacher the gnome looked as if a vein would pop as he focused intently on making a fireball, however, nothing happened with a dejected look he went to turn around and take his seat however the prof wouldn’t let it go

“What do you call that that's pathetic and you want to become a mage I've seen orcs with better talent”
The kid was about in tears but the prof was venting on him and kept going finally breaking down he turned to run only to run into spencer
“Listen kid don’t take it so hard he just has little man syndrome and considering he’s taller vented on you the guy probably has no talent I mean those who can do those who can’t teach.”
Of course, this was said with the purpose of letting the Napoleon-sized elf hear as well as the rest of the class. Kneeling down he whispered into his ear “If you want I'll help you out after class but I’ll get you revenge first” standing back up spencer walked forward towards the throwing area there were of course wands and staffs but of course he would want to completely embarrass the prof.
The prof was standing to the side watching hoping that this brat failed, however, something he didn’t expect happened the idiot was going to cast without a wand using his bare hands this was an advanced course by itself due to the danger however if he injured himself so what he already warned him. All of a sudden a large amount of energy could be sensed being contained in his hand after it was thrown but that wasn't the scary part it was a magma ball all of a sudden the other hand launched an attack a flaming lightning ball both highly advanced skills. Walking away as if he had done nothing spencer approached the prof
“I know my skills are nothing special and that you must be able to do at least that I mean It would be embarrassing to be surpassed by a brand new student who up until this class had never even felt the elemental energy.”
The prof stood there saying nothing the other students stared in awe even with stats of an LVL 6 magi it was still rare and took time to perfect to do so with no practice was unheard of. With a smirk, he walked up to the gnome “you want to go get something to eat I just opened up the rest of the day apparently”
“Ah yea sure I guess”
Placing his hand on the gnome's head they vanished only to reappear in front of the cafeteria

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
