《The Diamonds》The Fake Doctor

I guess Dr. Crow decided that the best way to find Simon would be to go back to the hospital where I got captured. That probably makes sense considering that's probably the first place the DA's would look. So Dr. Crow didn't want me to be transformed as Princess Black. Instead I wore regular clothing that was in the form of scrubs that a doctor would wear. I also had a white coat on that would signify that I was a doctor along with a stethoscope that I wore around my neck. My name tag was an eyeroll. The name on it said: Dr. Black.
I had no experience with working at a hospital in this type of profession obviously, Dr. Crow had an assistant follow me around. The assistant was a trained doctor that hadn't graduated from medical school yet. The fact that Dr. Crow would cut corners like that didn't surprise me. For some reason, Dr. Crow wanted me to wear contact lenses that hide the color of my eyes. They were strange and covered my irises too. They were all black made my eyes look a lot like what they looked like when I was transformed as Princess Black in my flashbacks. At first they were kind of hard to put in but then I had no problem with them after a couple of tries.
My first day walking around the hospital was very uneventful. The assistant walked around the hospital with me, her name was Kayden. A lot of the 'patients' or at least it looked they were 'patients' that I saw, I was mostly checking their vitals and stupid things like that. I guess Dr. Crow didn't want the fake doctor to be a pro on the first day of work.
Dr. Crow did give me a lunch break and he made sure I got one, for whatever the reason he felt that was mandatory. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he has a heart. But that's just sarcastic thinking. In my mind, Dr. Crow has no heart and he needs to be put down. Since the Diamond species are pretty much indestructible and unable to be killed, I didn't know how I could kill Dr. Crow.
Then there's the Fog. Trust me, being put underneath that isn't pleasant. Right now I'm wishing for the day that I can somehow escape from Dr. Crow but that too seems hopeless at the moment.
I was sitting down in the breakroom which looked a lot like a jail cell that Dr. Crow set aside just for me and my 'assistant' for our lunch breaks.
"So, Dr. Black," Kayden said.
"Yes, Kayden?" I replied.
"You don't look happy today," Kayden said.
Well if you were constantly being tortured by a sicko that claims to be your Step-Dad I don't think you'd be happy either! I thought.
I heard that! Dr. Crow thought.
Of course you did! You can hear my thoughts with the wonderful Fog you put me under. You're such a wonderful employer thanks! I thought with sarcasm.
Ha, ha you're hilarious Princess, really you are. Dr. Crow thought.
I wish that you would stop calling me Princess! I might be a Princess in your sick and twisted fantasy land, but we're in reality here and I'm not royalty! I thought.
Oh well, whatever you say but whether you like or not you will be called Princess when you're with me. Speaking of that, I'm going to pay you a visit after lunch. It's not the usual though, it's something unusual that I need you to do for me. Dr. Crow thought.

Whatever it is I don't want to know. I thought.
Too bad, you'll know about it when you get here. Dr. Crow thought. I'm hoping it will help you develop your fangs so you can start puberty!
Just when I thought you couldn't get anymore gross, you just did. Last time I checked already went through puberty, I thought, and how you managed to escape the government and not get the death penalty is beyond me! Don't worry, I'll figure out a way to play executioner with you, and you can count on that!
Dr. Crow laughed in his thoughts, You're so cute you know that? I totally love your defiant personality!
Gee thanks my not Step-Dad! I thought. Tell you what, I'll keep my lunch down as much as possible. That way the next time I see you, I bring it up to say hello! Remember the last time I did that?
Yeah and that was awfully cute too. Don't worry, you won't get a chance to do that again! Dr. Crow thought. Oh by the way, if you're wondering why Kayden isn't saying anything at the moment, she's underneath the Fog too. I tightened it on her so she can't do or say a thing at the moment. I don't want her interrupting our conversation at the moment.
Why? I thought.
Because talking to you like this is an intimate moment for me. So it's special, it's our little quality time together. Dr. Crow thought.
At that moment I really wanted to throw-up. I didn't want to do anything else but puke.
As I told you before, I don't have control over bodily functions but the Fog can tell me when you're getting ready to use them. Dr. Crow thought.
I couldn't stop my stomach from emptying it's contents even if I wanted to. I had enough dignity to actually throw up on the floor instead of on Kayden's face. The poor girl doesn't need that if she's gone through as much as torture as I think she did.
In case you're wondering, yes I do have fun with all of my employees but only after their first day of work though and they get put under the Fog just like you. Dr. Crow thought.
Gross! I kept throwing up and it didn't look like I was going to stop puking anytime soon.
Don't worry you're not going to pass out, not yet you aren't. Dr. Crow thought. I'll have Kayden go get you some medicine. Kayden, would you be a dear and go get some medicine for Dr. Black?
"Yes Dr. Crow," said Kayden in a zombie-like fashion, "I can do that for you."
Kayden stood up and promptly walked out of the room. She came into the room with a syringe that had some sort of green liquid in it. I looked up at her and went right back to puking.
Make it stop! I thought.
"Don't worry you'll feel better soon," Kayden said.
I was getting ready to fall out of my chair because I was still puking and on the verge of passing out. Kayden caught me and rolled up my shirt sleeve. I felt the prick of a needle and as soon as the medicine was injected, I stopped throwing up. Although I felt a little bit light headed, I was grateful to get some relief.
I felt creeped out by Kayden's stoned-face. She might as well be a statue, or a robot. I really wanted to lay down but I doubted Dr. Crow was going to let me do that anytime soon.

Good. Kayden could you be a dear and escort Dr. Black to psych ward room number 36? I have something special to show her. Dr. Crow thought.
Kayden nodded. "Come on Dr. Black let's go."

Great, wonderful! Of course Dr. Crow would think to have Abigail work as a pretend to work as a Doctor in this fake hospital! I thought. Now what do I do?
"Uh, Agent Silver?" Asher asked. "Could you sit down? You're scaring everyone."
"Sit down?" I snarled. "Sit down! How on earth-"
Asher came up to me and slapped me. "That's getting annoying! Knock it off! I didn't care if-"
"Agent Silver stop!" Asher cried.
We were sitting in the waiting room of the fake hospital as I paced back and forth. There's no way I could sit down, not now and not when Abigail's still in trouble. Asher forced me to stand still and he hugged me tightly.
This time, I didn't return the embrace, I was pissed off and annoyed. I grit my teeth, "Don't tell me to stop freaking out! And don't tell me to sit down!"
"Um, actually I agree with Agent Purple this time," said Wrinkler. "Freaking out about this isn't going to help matters and it's going to get us any closer to Agent Black."
Shawn paused. "Wait, I thought Patty said this was an exchange of information type mission? We got what we needed right? So this mission is a success so let's go back to HQ. What does this have to do with Agent Black?"
I took a deep breath and let it out, "As much as I hate to say this, Agent Jaws is right, we got what we needed for the time being."
Asher let go of me and sighed, "Yeah I don't like this either. I mean, she's here and she could be right underneath our noses! Let's go back to HQ so we can at least dump the deadweight!"
Asher gave a nod motion towards Shawn and I knew exactly what he was talking about. Shawn picked up on that, "Hey I'm not deadweight!"
Asher rolled his eyes, "Oh really? Let's see here, you're the fattest Agent I've ever seen working with the Diamond Division, you're a low ranking Agent that's slowing us down because we can't travel by rooftop so you don't get killed! And how many bags of chips have you eaten in a thirty minute timespan? I'm starting to see why the agency gave you the codename Agent Jaws!"
That comment was enough to get me to stop freaking out at least for the moment. That actually made me smile.
Wrinkler chuckled, "Well it looks like your insult got Agent Silver to stop freaking out for the moment."
Shawn growled, "Ha, ha! I'm so happy I could help ease the tension around here."
I ignored him, "Yeah let's go back."
We headed back to HQ even though I really didn't want to. Not when Abigail was close, I wanted to search every inch of this hospital until I found her. But at the moment, that wasn't a good idea.

When I got to the psych ward room number 36 I was horrified by what I saw. Dr. Crow was sitting next to a hospital bed and he had a person tied down on the bed and hooked up to some type of strange looking machine.
I gulped and stared at him horrified, "What is this?"
As soon as I spoke, the person tied down to the bed started to struggle against the restraints. Dr. Crow gave me a sinister smile and blindfolded the person tied down and gagged them before they could even begin to scream. He turned to me, "Remember when I told you need a couple of things in order to complete puberty for a Diamond?"
I didn't say anything, I was too terrified to even speak. I nodded slowly.
"There are two things that you need to complete puberty as a Diamond," explained Dr. Crow, "the first thing you need to redevelop are your fangs. The second you need to redevelop is your magic. Once you have both those things, your puberty will be complete. Right now I just want to help you summon your fangs."
I opened my mouth to say something but then promptly shut it. I blinked. I had no words and Dr. Crow might as well have the Fog tightened on me as tight as it could go.
Dr. Crow kept his sinister smile and shook his head, "Now don't be like that Princess! You getting your fangs will be the easy part. I've already gone through puberty and gotten my old body back and now I have fangs too! Wanna see?"
Truth be told, I didn't see anything that was getting ready to happen. I wanted to run out of the room as fast as I could! I knew it wasn't possible and then I thought I was dreaming. If I was dreaming, I seriously wanted to wake up.
Dr. Crow opened his mouth and out of the roof of his mouth two fangs came from it. He closed his mouth but he made sure to keep his fangs showing over his bottom lip. Now that he had his mouth closed, he looked like a vampire.
I finally brought myself to say something, "Okay… So Diamonds are immortal vampires?"
Dr. Crow snorted. "Nope! Not even close! You see, vampires suck the blood from their enemies! Contrary to one would think, vampires are real. I actually have a couple of friends that are vampires. No, they're not nocturnal. They look like regular people like you and me."
"Yup, I'm dreaming and it's time for me to wake up!" I shrieked.
Dr. Crow snorted again, "Aww, you're so cute when you're scared! But no, you're not dreaming and I haven't used my fangs on you yet because it wasn't time for it."
I blinked and gaped at him. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Oh you'll see," Dr. Crow said. "What we're getting ready to do here, should enhance your fight or flight defenses. A lot of times when a Diamond gets their fangs it's when you're in a situation that you need to protect yourself or someone else. Seeing that you were already a DA that tells me if someone's in trouble, you'll race their defense. That's how you were able to single handedly stop the Battle for Shaw Castle."
"How do you know about that?" I asked.
"Oh please Princess!" Dr. Crow said as he rolled his eyes. "Everyone in every single government agency all around the world knows about that. It's not like it's a guarded secret or anything."
"But if it's well known, then how come nobody really knew about it at HQ?" I questioned.
Dr. Crow paused. "Oh? Now that I don't believe! Unless they knew about it and chose not to tell you? Anyway, this machine here is what those in the medical community call electric shock therapy. A lot doctor's seem to think this type of treatment is kind of outdated, but nonetheless, some hospitals still use it. As a matter of fact depending on how this type of treatment is administered, some patients don't survive. However, if they do survive, it has a lot of benefits to a person's mental health. The way we're going to administer this type of treatment to this patient as a let's see… A 50/50 chance of surviving."
I started to shake not because of fear but because of anger. "NO!"
Dr. Crow cocked his head to the side. "No? No, what? It's simple, all you have to do is flip the switch and we can start this patient's treatment."
"I. WILL. NOT!" I roared.
"What was that? I didn't hear that," taunted Dr. Crow, "can you repeat what you just said?"
I felt Dr. Crow tried to tighten the Fog on but there was no way I was going to let someone that was innocent people die just because Dr. Crow wanted them to. I don't like killing innocent people on my missions and I'm not about to let that happen now. Dr. Crow laughed, "Interesting, you're getting angry now and you're fighting against the Fog." He paused. "Is that blood I see coming from your eye?"
I roared as loud as I could, "BLOOD? I DON'T CARE ABOUT BLOOD! STOP THIS MADNESS RIGHT NOW!"
"Or you'll do what?" Dr. Crow chuckled. "Kill me? Now that I would like to see you do or at least try to do. Come on Princess, all you have to do is flip the switch…"
"NOOOOOOOO!" I practically bellowed the word out. The next thing I knew I started to shake. I felt my muscles growing, enhancing themselves and as they grew my clothes torn off me. I found myself on all fours and I looked down to see that my hands were now claws. My feet were still about the same, just more muscle added to them.
I ran over to the machine and swiped at it. As I held it in my claws, I crushed it.
"Whoa! Easy there!" Dr. Crow shouted. I didn't pay any attention to him. I kept trying to reach for him. I wanted to reach for his neck specifically. I wanted to rip his head off his shoulders and stomp on it along with the rest of his body.
Unfortunately it was hard to catch Dr. Crow because his body pretty much did the same thing mine was doing at the moment. Whatever creature I had turned into, he turned into.
Dr. Crow somehow managed to get behind me and he squeezed my neck. Before I passed out I heard him say, "Mission complete! You got your fangs!"

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. Labyrinthia's Maze
I had always found the idea of “Other Worlds” stupid. Magic wasn’t real. Even if it was the chance of someone spiriting away someone form a world without magic to a world with seemed utterly stupid. As I was about to log out of the NVR game I have been obsessing over for over 8 years, I blacked out. Next thing I know I am now living as my in game avatar in another world. Only I am now back to scratch, no more giant 200 floor dungeon, no more army of minions and traps, just me and a small room in the ground. Luckily, I have all I need to slowly rebuild my dungeon, I only hope I live long enough to do so. Who sent me here, what do they want from me, and can I ever return home? The Priest of Genes
Meet Seth, acolyte in the Church of Virtue. He’ll be a Priest like his father soon, he just knows it. Sure he didn’t inherit his mother’s preaching power, but he doesn’t mind being the secondary priest at whatever temple he is assigned to. Just as long as he has a library. Meet this genetics textbook. Hmm, that doesn’t belong here. It must have come from somewhere far away, I guess something happened to its owner. I’m sure a studious young man who likes healing could go far with this information, whether he wants to or not. This is my first time really writing anything, so I hope you like it! Please let me know if I make any mistakes; I have a new R&D tech job at a genomics company, so I probably don’t edit as much as some people. I’m shooting for two thousand-ish word chapters released on Sundays, since none of the webnovels I read ever seem to update that day. Underserved Market! Genre is fantasy, possibly progression fantasy. Maybe a tiny bit litRPG if you wait a while and squint really hard, but that’s the most I’m prepared to claim. Hedged my bets on the content warnings, nothing that bad. Cover art from A. W. Gelman
