《Den of Vipers》Book 1, Rebirth, Chapter 1: Snake Eyes (Part 1)

“Fucking hypocrites…” groaned a woman as she pulled a suitcase full of clothes and other things behind her along a winding forested trail. “Nothing but god damn fucking hypocrites!”
As the wheels of her pulled baggage snagged on something, the woman snarled and gave a sharp tug, freeing the bag but dislodging a bit of the terrain, which flew into the space between her shoe and her sock before eventually finding its way down the back of her shoe and down to her heel.
“God fucking damn it!” she spat, but she was so close, and she only needed to walk a few more meters at best. The cabin, as far as it was from the rest of civilization, was literally in eyesight, so she could tolerate a bit of mild annoyance for a bit longer.
“Why the fuck do I have to do this bullshit?” the woman grumbled, her voice dropping in intensity as she neared the cabin. She had been essentially forced to come out here and stay with a member of the CEO’s family, and she assumed that this also entailed her being forced to either sleep with the bastard or do other ‘favors’ for him.
That man was a menace, not just to women, but to society as a whole, and yet his connections and wealth let him get off scot-free. She had heard horror stories about his place, and now it was her turn to be sent to be treated not as a person, but as a thing.
“Should have started looking months ago…” she muttered. “Still need this fucker for the connections to get this new job, and then I’ll be done with him, his family, and the whole damn shithole of a company…”
She looked up at the door of the cabin and closed her eyes.

“If he tries to stick his dick in my mouth, then fuck the consequences, because I’m gonna bite it clear off.”
With a deep, pathological hatred burning inside of her body, she knocked on the door. She waited for a while, but there was no response, so she knocked again, louder than before, but this too was met with silence and a lack of any eventful occurrences.
“Once more, and then I’m go-“
Before she could finish her declaration, though, the door was hurriedly opened and a man who by all rights should have looked like he was a top model for PlayGirl opened the door.
“Ah, so you’re here. Good. Get in and take off your clothes. I’ve been trying to find something to fap to for hours, and now a good cunt is finally here. You’re late, by the way, you dumb bitch.”
“I have a name, you kno-.” The woman tried to protest, but she was hit across the face with a backhanded, closed-fist slap.
“Don’t care, whore. Just get in and take your goddamn clothes off. You’ll be with me until I say otherwise, now do what I say, you fucking bitch. Or is that too complex for your stupid little whore brain to comprehend?”
She grimaced and felt herself rearing back to try and smack that fucker across his smug, stupid little face, but before she could actually engage in that act, she found herself dragged forward and tossed to the floor by her hair.
“DO WHAT I SAY, SLUT! NOW MOVE!”
A kick to her stomach knocked the wind out of her, but she snarled and found herself fantasizing about what she was going to do to this bastard once he fell asleep. She doubted his stamina was nearly as potent as he seemed to believe that it was.

What was the worst he could do, either? He could beat her black and blue, but she only needed to find some way to kill him in exchange. Fuck the law, fuck the rules, fuck the suits, and fuck this bastard.
God willing, she would find a knife, or a gun, and she would put this mongrel six feet under. She may end up in prison, but damn would it be satisfying to see his family’s faces as their heir and prized little shithead was sent into the ground in front of them.
She had no idea what this bastard was capable of, though….
…
A slap across the face woke her from her sleep. The fucker had not even done that much on the first day, well, aside from injecting her with some weird drugs, and then chaining her up in his bedroom with a rag tied around her lower face and into her mouth.
“Did you think I wouldn’t know that you were gonna try and kill me, huh, you fucking bitch?!” he yelled as he smacked her again. “I saw it in your eyes, whore, your eyes!”
He sat down and looked down at her with contempt.
“Eyes like a fucking snake. Eyes like a fucking snake…”
Through her drugged haze, the woman began to notice that something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong.
Was it smoke? No, it did not smell like smoke, and yet it was even thicker than any fog or mist that she would have expected to be possible.
“Eyes… like a… snake….” Were the last words she heard before the sound of a head slamming into the armrest of a chair snapped her out of her haze before a deep, unstoppable sleep began to force itself upon her more intensely than her would-be rapist had almost been.
As she drifted off, she saw something amidst the fog before her eyes fully closed. It was something just in front of not just her own face, but that of the asshole rich bastard’s as well.
She found herself giving a light laugh as she succumbed to slumber. She had seen enough fiction to know where this was going, and God willing, she would have her sweet, sweet revenge, not just for herself, but for everyone else, man, woman, and child, that this fucker had ever hurt.
She had eyes like a snake, right? Well, those ‘snake-like eyes’ would be the last thing that the bastard that did this to her would ever see.

Madness Led by the Hands
‘Great, no… splendid. It was for naught.’ ‘Naught? Depends. If your desire is to send an army of killers our family’s way, yes indeed. If it’s plain survival you seek, then no.’ ‘They don’t coexist?’ ‘What… don’t tell me you’re still all groggy from the fall. Perhaps in novels, but real life is much tougher–––many more times a drag than anyone can possibly imagine. If dusty history is not a reliable teacher for you, then the pandemic surely took that place. At least that one has the advantage you needn’t be literate to savvy how reality always trumps imagination.’ ‘Whatever you say, whatever you say. So… what now?’ ‘Now? Isn’t it obvious? Now we shall survive. And live a good life.’ ‘Ohh… pretty much everything here has something against this little weird wish of ours. Might you consider?’ ‘Then pretty much everything here is a goner.’ ‘Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. Too much trouble, you see. I’d prefer laying low somewhere safe.’ ‘…nobody told you it’s mutually exclusive, no–––or did you forget about that too?’ ‘Fine, then I wish my future enemies all the best.’ ‘They are undeserving of your pity.’ ‘Of course not. That unlucky bunch won’t ever comprehend the reason behind their demise. Just let me smoke in peace and offer my condolence in advance.’ ‘Idem, let me study alchemy, unobstructed by all, if possible. This also includes you. By the way, are you sure you smoke to offer condolences? It seems like an excuse to me.’ ‘I-it is none. Plain truth, you see?’ ‘Seriously, why did I even ask...?’

Steps of the Immortal Tree
Evan stood on a hill, staring calmly at the gate of his former clan. A crowd waited behind him, some eyeing the clan in an unresigned manner, others looking at their spiritual support. Some of the young children shivered at the gnawing cold. Wind howled in his ears, seemingly deploring his fate. A silvery cloud drifted over the mountains surrounding the compound. The roar of a river could be heard from underneath its frozen surface. He had reincarnated many years ago. Hailed as a prodigy from his youngest age, Evan had seemingly tread on a path to invincibility. He had gotten married with his childhood sweetheart and had cultivated with a group of friends, forming a considerable power of his own. Yet now, here he was, devoid of any path to move forward, with his energy locus destroyed. His wife was dead and his branch had been kicked out of the clan. He looked at his progeny that had been entrusted to him. The baby seemed content in his father’s strong arms, too young to understand anything but the warmth of the father’s beating heart. Signaling to the people behind him, he turned around and the procession gradually disappeared in the distance, as the sun gradually set and the stars acted as a guide. --- Author-san here. This is my first fiction, so I appreciate any and all feedback! (^^) The cover picture is by Yuji Himukai (as pointed out by Truis). I found it on the internet. Please contact me if you want to have it taken down. If anyone is interested in drawing a cover, send it to me. I'll put it up if I feel it represents the book well, with your name in the credits.
