《Vampire's Beginnings》Chapter Nineteen

I woke up to Derik looking down at me with a smile on his face. Confusion on what happened must have showed on my face because he laughed, "You are going to have one hell of a bump on your head. Ricky was able to fight through his own pain to save you."

My thoughts instantly went to David and his injuries. Pain shot through my head as I tried to get up. Derik gently forced me back to lay down, "They are okay," he reassured me. But for some reason my emotions wouldn't let me calm down until I saw them standing in front of me. For some reason, I was more worried about them then I was about Derik who got thrown through a window.

My eyes looked over him briefly, seeing bandages in different places. I didn't ask how he was because he was out before the fight even started. Actually there really wasn't a fight, but more like a torture session took place. By the way Derik sat next to me on the bed, he felt bad that he couldn't protect me as much as Ricky and David did.

“I’m sorry, Leah. I couldn’t protect you,” it was nearly in a whisper, but I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. I ended up looking at him and gently kissed his lips to let him know that I forgave him. It was the first time I ever did it and he smiled once the shock of what I did wore off.

The sudden sound of David's screaming ruined our small moment. Making us both look towards the doorway. With how loud he was you would think that he was just outside my room in the hallway. David's scream was then followed by a girl’s voice yelling at him. Making me think of only one person that it could be. From what I have been told about Maria, she would be here to nag David about his pain.

"Sounds like they finally got David to wake up," Derik said as he stood up off the bed. He then held his hand out to me for me to take. My head protested as I got up, but I needed to see that they were okay.

The look on Derik's face as we headed for the kitchen could only be described as worry. I wasn't sure what he was worried about. Maybe about the fact that I got hit in the head and now it felt like it was splitting open. Or, the fact that I didn't ask if he was okay and I was more worried about the person screaming in my kitchen. How much worse were David's wounds that he was screaming like that.

When I got to the kitchen, David was sitting on the island and being held in place by Mike and Maria. With clenched teeth, David watched as an old man slowly removed small pieces of glass from his side. I guess he was being careful to not damage more then what already was.

“He missed the major organs, but looks like you won’t be doing any stomach exercises anytime soon,” the old man said as he got the last bit of glass out, “We’re going to have to tell you’re father that you’re brother can’t train or fight for at least a month.”

“Hear that bro, no fighting,” Maria said as she smiled, still holding him. But she removed a hand to pat him on the shoulder lightly.

“Bite me,” David said painfully and then layed down. He had passed out cold once again. The old man ignored him as he got his tools to place stitches into David's side to close up his wound.

“He’s out again, Doc,” Maria mentioned as he let go of her hold on him. He almost fell off of the island but luckily Mike made sure his grip stayed strong. Maria looked like she could care less as she came running towards me. She had chocolate brown eyes and light brown hair practically glowed in the light. Making me a bit jealous. She looked really pretty and I kind of envied her for it, "Leah, are you okay? I bet you got one killer headache right now. I'll see if Doc has something for it."

She ran off before I could say anything. Derik hung back in the entry way. Still keeping his distance from Maria. Part of me kind of wished he would just suck it up and stop acting like a guilty party. But my thoughts escaped me as Maria came back up to me holding a small pill bottle.

I smiled at her as I took the bottle from her. "Doc says to only take half a dose because this stuff is usually used for the boys when they get too carried away in training," Maria mentioned as she also handed me a glass of water. It was quite amazing how she wasn't at all effected by this.

"Maria?" I said, catching her attention, "How do you do it? You still smile even though your brother is unconscious on my kitchen island."

She gave me a small smile. Completely understanding why I was asking the question because this was all new to me, "This is what the war between the two families looks like. You learn to ignore it when it becomes an everyday thing."

My heart went out for her and the rest of the family. I've only seen members of the other family and what they could do twice. And, I feel like those were just small things. I could only imagine what they go through everyday in New York.

David's father suddenly entered the kitchen, breaking me from my thoughts. I looked to see where Derik was, but he was no where in sight. He must have been ordered to make rounds since the others were occupied with getting their injuries looked at.

“What’s the situation with him, Doc?” he asked the old man, who's name I was starting to realize was Doc. Or, at least that is just what ever everyone calls him.

“You are out of a lead man for a month,” the old man replied making David's father let out a deep sigh as he closed his eyes. I am guessing that this was not the news he wanted to hear, “I’m surprised that Donny was able to take him down so easily.”

“It means he’s getting stronger,” he said and then looked at me, “Is she really worth it?”

“Nanna says she is, Dad,” Maria pointed out. I didn’t really pay attention to what she was wearing until now. She had on a black blouse on with a short jean skirt. She was also wearing black high heel sandals. Around her neck she had three different necklaces along with a chain holding two rings. I remember people mentioning someone named Bo, and it must be the name of Maria's husband. Sad thing is that I didn't peg her as a married woman for how young she looked.

“Why are you even still here?” he asked Maria.

“Someone had to hold David’s hand during the glass removal. You sure weren’t going to,” Maria responded as Ricky walked in the room with Derik. Ricky walked with stiffness and his head hung low. But it didn't hide the black and blue mark on his face from when Donny threw him to the ground.

"You shouldn't be walking, Ricky," the old man cautioned, "You almost went to the hospital with that stomach wound."

“Now all we need is Mike to get hurt and then the whole gang will be out of commotion,” Ricky joked as he walked up to David's dad. But the look on his face showed that he didn't appreciate it one bit. Making Ricky instantly regret what he just said.

Mike let out a small chuckle as he moved David more onto the island so he didn't fall off, "Good going, Dumbass. Now he is going to make us run laps once we are all healed up."

"You are hardly even injured," Ricky whined. David's dad pinched the bridge of his nose as if he was starting to get a headache. From the times that I hung out with these guys, I didn't blame him. They appeared to be quite the handful.

Mike opened his mouth to say something back, but David groaned making him look at him instead, "He's awake. You going to knock him out again, Doc?"

The old man just shook his head as he cleaned up his mess. I didn't even know that he was done stitching David up. For an old man he was pretty quick with his work. But he mumbled to himself as he packed his things, "I'm getting too old for this. Next time I'm sending Gabbie to deal with you boys."

The complaining was kind of comforting to the point that it put a small smile on my face. But my smile didn't last long as I remembered that I had a few broken windows that needed to get fixed. Panic suddenly raised in me as thoughts of my father freaking out about them popped into my head.

A firm hand landed on my shoulder, making me look at David's father, "Don't worry about the windows and any other damages. Bo, Jake, and Jordan are working on it. Your father won't even be able to tell the difference."

I hoped that he was right about that part. Or, else my father wasn't going to leave me alone in the house anymore.
