《Path of Salvation》Chapter 008: Corazon City

"What's wrong with him? Why the sudden question that ruined the day? And now he's brushing it off wanting to meet again, here while Ben is gone," Franky thought.

Alpha's sudden shift into the moral dilemma made him think that there may be more to Demons. While obviously, there are those that actively aim to make humanity suffer for their own gain, there also are those that seem peaceful like Ban and the mother and the child. What worries him is not taking care of those Demons, but as to why they were kept in the dark. He's starting to wonder whether or not the Coordinator, someone who's controlling Demons for what may be his own selfish gain, could have a solid reason for doing whatever he's doing. While he does wish for Alpha to know what he's struggling with, he also wishes to not burden him at all.

"Maybe they were hiding things from us because their origin is cruel? Is that why they don't want us to know what Demons are?", Franky wondered. "Maybe that answer... maybe Alpha knows more than I give him credit for. I should talk with him."

It's 9 am, an hour after Ben left to go to work. Their doorbell rings with it likely being Alpha awaiting for Franky to open the door. Standing outside with the same clothes as yesterday, he awaited Franky.

"I wonder if what I said to him was harsh. I should apologize. Maybe he's right... maybe Demons shouldn't be left alone," Alpha thought. He doubted the decision he made yesterday, the decision to tell him about these two Demons he had long forgotten, and loathes himself, even more, knowing that he may have invoked some form of dilemma within Franky.

"I wish I had forgotten about them," he thought with a grim expression. Someone opened the door. Franky quickly flung open the door with a tense impression. "Come in!", he demanded as Alpha is putting his shoes off. With his impatience, he dragged Alpha inside and closed the door. Loudly he said, "You're not wrong at all!" Caught off-guard by his sudden and loud claim, he was stunned and tried to articulate a few words. "When you asked me whether or not all Demons should be purged, I agreed with you. They do have some 'humanity' within them," Franky claimed. While most of it is true, he still wishes to monitor them if possible, at least until they can confirm what they truly are and how hostile they may be. Alpha pulled himself away from Franky blushing but still smiling. "I see. Thank you," he said. Knowing that Franky seems to accept his view on Demons, he believes he can show him some more things he has discovered. With his shoes off, they walked into the living room. There he wanted to show him something he's been itching to reveal. Holding out his right hand, the hand with the ring that allows him to transform into a Dream Catcher, a warm glow emanated from his ring. Several feathers, all golden at the top and white at the bottom with the color being more and more diluted the further down the feather you look, emerged as the glow within his ring blinded them. "What was that?", Franky wondered as he opened his eyes again only to be met with wonders. It's the wonderful world that exists within a part of Alpha's soul that stunned him and left him wide-eyed and his mouth wide open. Standing on top of a massive building seemingly reaching ten kilometers in height while also having uncomparable width, Franky looked around trying to spot whatever may be down there. He stands at the edge of the building until he was pushed by Alpha. Shocked, he fell to what would be his doom if it weren't for him being a Dream Catcher. Alpha followed right after as the clouds blocked Franky's view. With both transforming into Dream Catchers, they looked around. Spotting several islands within this heavenly barrier, Franky awaited his landing so that he could explore this world. The sun, facing them as they fall, slightly blinded Franky but enveloped them in warmth despite the high altitude. It gave off a warm glow as an island far from them was filled to the brim with plantlike gems. Their emerald and sapphire shades painted the building in green and blue created a surge of strength within them. As they get closer to the bottom of this structure, Franky notices a few lines hovering above houses. The houses themself, just like the massive building, were in cuboid shape with enough space to house a family of five. With the houses connected creating long rows of buildings and each row connected to what seems to be a train station. Glass separates whoever could have lived within these houses from the stations and the black metal beam that hovers three meters above the platform. It connected to the building with several other beams emerging from within the building all reaching the top floor. It leaves a lot of buildings within the shadows. Finally landing, without creating a dent in the roads. It only whirled up the dust that had settled on the road. Seeming like a futuristic ghost town, Franky asked Alpha, "Your world is quite vast and full of incomprehensible crap. How come?" "I can't explain it myself," Alpha answered. "I only know that I can manipulate it," he said as he pointed at one of the houses. After coming in contact with it, he imbued it with magic. The white wall lit up but in hexagonal shapes. Creating hexagons on the walls whose borders were glowing in gold. Blinding Franky, he knew the house is now powered by his magic, but instead of staying within the house, it traversed through the entire row of houses which likely had a length of nine kilometers. All eight meters wide and having a first and second floor. All of them gave off the same glow for the amount of time Alpha touched them and stopped emitting light as he let go of the wall. Amazed by the display, Franky approached Alpha. "That was amazing!", he said. Alpha grinned as he still had something up his sleeve and claimed, "There's something else which will blow you away even more!" The key attached to his necklace came loose and grew to the two meters it grows to in battle. Jumping on his rod, he told Franky to sit on it and hold on. With high speeds, they neared the megastructure trying to look for an entrance. Circling around the building, they come to the conclusion, that there are four main entrances located north, east, south, and west. Each main entrance is 100 meters wide with ten black steel beams stretching into the unknown. The main entrances have ten of the same metal beams they've seen before coming out of each main entrance. Each main entrance had two side entrances for what could be massive vehicles. After thoroughly looking into the islands geography, they came to the conclusion that its center is the massive building stretching ten kilometers into the air and having a width of two and a half kilometers, but the island itself was as massive as 160,000km² creating a floating landmass massive enough to crush a country. With its two massive mountains, two rivers, two lakes, the massive flower fields at the borders, and the dense northern forest stretching through one-quarter of this land, it allowed for possible growth of new life. Maybe there are cattle they never noticed because of these broad lands. Its perfect square border allowed people to walk 400 km from the southern border to the northern border. Each border had a wall made of the same material the pitch-black metal was made of allowing no escape for any normal human. Since nothing was powering this island, the entrances seemed like dark tunnels reaching into nowhere. Obviously, by now Alpha has learned how to channel his light magic into objects, just like he did before with the houses intended for living. With that ability, he lit up one of the main entrances. It seemed to take a toll on his energy as the building drained him of his magic. After a long minute of drainage, he felt tired and descended to the ground, but the tunnel lit up. "What's wrong? Are you okay?!", Franky asked frantically as Alpha trying to remain on his feet. Sitting down and leaning onto the wall, he let his rod shrink and attach itself to his necklace. "I'm okay. This just seems to drain my magic a lot more than necessary," he mumbled. It slightly reassured Franky but he still decides to carry Alpha on his back. "You know that's not necessary, right?", Alpha claimed. Franky takes in a deep breath and offers, "I should carry you. You've been carrying me on your road for like twelve hours. Maybe you should transform and let us return home. Ben likely is home so we'll have to find an excuse." With a snap, they've returned home. Looking out of a window they noticed something odd. Franky let Alpha rest on their couch and transformed back. Ben was nowhere to be around. Barely anyone was outside. Looking at a clock in the living room, they came to the realization that only one hour and fifteen minutes had passed. "So the time passing within Alpha's barrier is ten times slower. Sounds kind of amazing, but he'll likely be out for at least an hour. Something knocked on their door as he walked around the house waiting for Alpha to wake up.

Prometheia lied on their porch waiting for Franky to open the door. She just waltzed in without asking whether or not she's welcome. "Well hello then," Franky said slightly annoyed at her. "What do you want? Z?", he asked as she made herself comfortable on a couch within the living room. "I just wanted to check on you," Prometheia claimed. Franky couldn't trust these words and demanded, "State your reason as to why you're here!" "I'm telling the truth. Have you ever noticed something about Zs?" The question felt odd as it came out of nowhere. The only thing that made Prometheia different from all the other Zs was the fact that she has some degree of emotions and her very own name to refer to, even if she doesn't seem to like it. "You seem more human, right?", he asked her. "Exactly. This is an abnormality amongst my species. Usually, anyone that shows any signs of self-preservation or human emotions is eliminated with no chance to fight back, but I went under the radar," she claimed. Taking a second to think of her next answer, she stated, "Since our minds are connected, it's quite easy to spot out a failure like me, but I, just like disconnecting from the Internet, avoided being spotted. Now I only hang around with Elena or rarely walk around to talk with you two." "Then wouldn't that mean that you're endangering yourself by walking to my house?", Franky asked. "Yes, but hanging around with you is much safer than staying alone within Elena's apartment. They might control a bunch of police officers, bust down the door and kill me and Elena without hesitation just because she's an accomplice," she stated. It definitely made sounds like she's actively being hunted, but he wondered whether or not that would endanger him and Alpha and why they would hunt their own species. He asked, "Does this mean me and Alpha are in danger?" "Well... at least Alpha wouldn't be as he lacks a strong enough will to kill, but fortunately we've found you in time. They don't like potential Dream Catchers with strong wills so they either kill them off almost immediately after they've been spotted for the first time or crippled by a traumatizing incident. Exactly that happened with Elena because she had a strong will that didn't let her bend to authority. Her entire team of five had been killed by an incident caused by Zs," she stated. "So they had planned to kill me off? Elena too? How?", he asked. Without hesitating, Prometheia with strong feelings of dread emitting from her, said, "Yes... Demons are split into several stages. Natural Rank 1; Fledgling; a weak Demon taken down by any Dream Catcher as they only focus on killing and quickly are killed off. With no special perks or great bodily features, they either are killed or adopted by higher-ranking Demons and turned into minions or Generals. By feeding off humans and the dark magic they emit with negative events within their life, they could avoid that and grow stronger to ascend to Unnatural Rank 2 or turn into Rank S Demons we'll get to later. Natural Rank 2; Awakened; have their own set of unique abilities and their very own minions. A Dream Catcher Z100 and up can beat them as their unique abilities aren't really fleshed out and their minions lack complexity. Something you can deal with while struggling. Natural Rank 3; Peace Disruptors; definitely feared among most Z Dream Catchers as it often turns into a battle of stamina between the Demon and the Dream Catcher. With their own Generals, which are minions that can split off their master and become a Demon themself after feeding on a few humans, abilities enhanced to what many consider skills acquired over a year, their stronger minions, and the phases they might possess, they prove as a great threat making even Z1000s to Z5000s wary of their presence. Rank 4; Pupa; are some of the most unpredictable Demons as they're about to hit Rank 5. They may gain another ability or two or their bodies grow far stronger than previously expected. There are no natural Rank 4s and Dream Catchers usually move in squads in fear of encountering these. The final rank, Rank 5; God of Destruction; is far too dangerous to be dealt with alone. No matter how skilled and strong you are, be wary of them as they are the definition of unpredictable. So far we've, except for the Abbotsford Near-Death Event (ANDE), been able to stop Demons from stepping past Rank 3. But, if any other Demon were to reach Rank 5, they might destroy the world. That's ignoring Rank Special, most of which are Natural Rank 3s losing all their unique abilities absorbing other Demons. Rank Special; Abnormals; are feared by anyone even if it is a Rank Special 1 as they are heavily boosted by something making them faster, stronger, and a lot more cunning. There are four types of Rank Specials with Rank Special 1 to Rank Special 5 being enhanced Demons boosted by special, newly acquired abilities. Rank Special F; Fusions; that absorb other Demons to grow stronger. By the time they grow cocky enough to waltz into a city without a barrier flattening it under its might. Rank Special A; Ancients; that decide to rest feeding onto darkness within their area as they slumber reawakening a century or even a millennia later far stronger than before and unpredictable as Demons evolve to abandon certain traits to avoid nuances. Rank Special S; Sentience; are far more dangerous as they possess the intelligence of some of the smartest humans that ever lived or even greater. They possess great self-restraint and even can communicate with us. Four have been spotted on this planet and there may be more that may have made the decision to live away from humanity and Demons. They're a real mystery and gave us insight as to how Demons came into existence." Franky didn't expect to take in so many facts at once, but he wanted to know more and wondered what ANDE was. Prometheia hesitated but preceded to tell him about the event. "It was Christmas Eve 2013 when a Rank Special 5, that powers itself up on pure light magic, what humanity has been calling nuclear power, even though it's flawed and not completely pure making it a lot less destructive, was heading towards a Rank Special 3 across the other side of Abbotsford that possessed exactly what it needed. Had they come into contact, only their fusion would have created an outburst of light magic creating a nuke that would erase anything in a fifty-kilometer radius with radiation that spreads far faster than that of those weak and pathetic atomic bombs your species created killing the entire North American continent in a few weeks. Your light speed is a joke as it only reaches your 'universal constant'. It's pathetic how humanity thinks they've discovered something great when they barely can interact with all five fundamental elements, especially not spiritual power. If an extraterrestrial being decided to destroy you, hell even Zs and Demons could, you would die from something far faster than light, something you cannot comprehend yet as you're so out of touch with reality." Her condescending nature definitely got on Franky's nerves but the fact that what they consider a world-ending event is a joke to Zs scares him of what may happen if they ventured out into space and discovered the greatest weapon. "Then what about the Coordinator?", he inquired. "The Coordinator simply gathers Demons and enhances them. Creating even more somewhat intelligent Demons that are far more aggressive sounds like the military power and intellect of a government. His goals are a mystery, but it doesn't seem he's walking around aimlessly. We're suspecting that he may pass through this city in a few days, but Elena should be back by then." It seems uncertain whether or not The Coordinator is going to pass through this city. With only a few days left for his possible arrival, he's worried about what may happen. Would he use extreme measures to get what he wants? Or will Dream Catchers at least come to an understanding? It was then that he felt sudden, but also intense fear surge within Prometheia. "What's wrong?", he asked. "There's a reason as to why Elena has told you to refrain from using your ability or discussing it in public. Shitty governments with their unfair contracts that allow them to use Dream Catchers like a lab rat bind us down. If The Coordinator were to reveal to the world that Dream Catchers exist, they would be allowed to start raiding homes and take every Dream Catcher to experiment on. This contract came into existence in 1616 and would come to an end in 2016. It's exactly because of this that people like him arise to let them live on in freedom and fulfill their duty as Dream Catchers," she stated. Franky never thought politics would bind something as magical and wondrous as Dream Catchers and Demons, but it made sense as this isn't another comic where everyone gets a happy end, but instead has to face reality as people at some point do become aware of magic. It's unfortunate that he's so weak that he can't compete at all with political superpowers. If he had met Elena a year earlier, he at least could protect Alpha and himself. They kept talking for another hour and waited for Alpha to wake up as well. It's 10:30 am and he's finally awoken. Stretching himself and yawning his stomach grumbled. "How do you feel?", Franky asked. Alpha tried to articulate a few words as his throat felt dry, but mumbled, "Do you have something to drink?" Quickly, Franky walked into the kitchen trying to get Alpha something to drink. "Also... what were you two talking about? Something about government action and so on, right?", he asked. It seems he has picked up on a few things while asleep. To tease him, she claimed, "I'll let you know if you decide to live with Elena from now on!" "Sure, I don't mind," he said with a blank face. Prometheia was surprised by his reaction as she hadn't known how much he may hate living with his family. "That guy's hopeless. His parents are scumbags! Obviously, someone as socially inept as him, wouldn't get that joke," Franky claimed. "Hey! They're nice sometimes you know!", Alpha said, but even he doubted his words. "Don't care." Prometheia just looked at them as they held their conversation. The exchange was quite interesting in her eyes, but she snickered as they kept bickering like an old married couple or two siblings getting into a fight. It was a first as the only ones she really got to talk to were Elena, her only friend, and Aiden, someone who seems to hate her very existence. She only could watch Dream Catchers by looking out of the window. It filled her with joy knowing that Elena may have someone she could depend on in the future. "You two seem like a good match. I hope you can continue to be Dream Catchers that help out Elena!", she told them with genuine hope for their success. It was then that she snapped back into her snappy and annoying attitude. "Well... not that I expect-", Prometheia said only to be disrupted by Alpha. "Thank you, Prometheia! It means a lot!", he said. Franky sighed and told him while grinning, "You sure know how to win someone's heart, don't you." He couldn't grasp what Franky may have meant but brushed it off only accepting his cup of water. Prometheia got up and jumped onto Alpha's shoulder just like she does with Elena showing him how much she trusts him. After filling his cup one more time and eating a few sweet snacks Ben put away in a cupboard, he proudly announced, "Now for Round 2! This time I'll show you the greatest creation within my barrier!" Pulling at his necklace, he enlarged his rod and let light fill the room. Back in front of the lit-up megastructure, they transformed as Prometheia tugged at Alpha's vest. Trying to enter the southern entrance, an invisible barrier has sealed off the path the steel beams presented, but the entrances for vehicles remained open. They flew down the tunnel coming to the realization, that it's just a long tunnel with a few stations and elevators leading up. At the center, some of the steel beams converged and maneuvered around a huge elevator in the middle. To access it they have to stop a couple dozens of meters away from the stations that face the western exit. Alpha jumped off his rod and touched the floor with his palm. A secret entrance opened up and allowed them to pass beneath the stations to the elevator revealing the hidden pathway. Seeming like a parking lot, they neared the massive elevator with a width of a hundred meters. It retracts into the slits within the ground designed to contain them as they near the elevator, but as they get to the center to what would have been the elevator, the walls come back out of the slits they hid in. A clicking noise can be heard as they're fully trapped within the elevator. Only awkward silence awaited them as Franky had wondered why they weren't moving. Before he could utter a word his attempt to speak was disrupted by the walls turning invisible revealing that they're floating above the massive skyscraper. Rising even higher at great speeds they finally reached their destination as the walls regained color only to be met with a dull view lacking stars or any kind of natural light.
