Chapter 5: Setteling in
As Remy walked over to his bike, he constantly yawned. He hadn't slept enough or well enough. Today he was supposed to work a 9-3 shift at the bar as well. When he reached his bike, he saw that Sandra was already waiting for him there. There were also a few people gathered near his bike, everyone were speculating about it. To that he just shrugged his shoulders and walked to the bike.
When he started putting his helmet on, his phone rang. He looked at the number and when he saw that it was Alex's he frowned. He picked it up and said, “Hello, what's up?” “You and Sandra are relived from your shifts today. Help her settle in properly and get a good nights sleep as well. Since tomorrow is Saturday, you can work a 9-9 shift tomorrow.” Alex said in a calm tone and Remy just agreed.
It wasn't unusual to have his shift bounced around like that. Most likely the people who were supposed to work the shifts tomorrow wanted a free weekend so they asked if they could trade shifts. Or Alex asked them in regards of settling in Sandra, he didn't know and honestly he didn't care. He was just glad to get some sleep.
When the call ended Sandra asked, “Did something happen?” Remy just glanced at her and said in an uninterested tone, “Well, Alex just changed our shifts. We will be working the 9-9 tomorrow as the people who were supposed to do it are filling in for us today. Anyways, where is your stuff, we'll take as much as we can on the first trip then.” Sandra just looked down at the ground and said, “They are at the bar and I bet we can take them in one trip.”
When Remy heard that, his was startled. “She could not have so few things right...” That was the only thing that was going through his head. He shook his head and put his helmet on as he said, “Lets go.” Sandra also put her helmet on as Remy started the bike.
When Sandra had also sat on the bike, Remy started going towards the Sleeping Dragon. They picked up Sandra's things and confirmed a few things with Alex before heading towards the apartment. When Remy saw that a 15 year old girl actually had only 2 backpacks worth of things, he was baffled. He did not think that she had so few things. Just before Remy started going towards his bike, Alex pulled him back again and said, “Hey, Erica looked through her bags and prepared this list.”

Remy accepted the list and asked with puzzlement, “What the heck is this?” Alex just shook his head as he answered, “They are supposed to be some things that are definitely essential for women it seems. She told me that you had to take her shopping today and buy all these things or you are going to have to go visit her family with her.” When Remy heard that, he froze. That was the last thing in this world he wanted to do.
He grit his teeth and said, “Okey, we will go and buy these things. I would like to remind you that I am renting her a room. I am not taking her in out of charity or pity neither am I going to take her in as lover. Do not forget that.” As he reached the end of his sentence, his eyes had turned completely cold. When Alex saw that he just nodded.
With that Remy walked over to the bike and took one of the backpacks on his back and they rode off. As the two disappeared from sight, Alex was still there in thought. From behind the door Erica walked out and sighed, “He truly is stubborn. No matter how hard I try to melt that frost surrounding him, I always fail. Maybe she will be capable of that.”
She was concerned that Remy would end up with no one to trust after they two died. They understood very well that he only trusted them and it took them years to get where they are. Alex just said, “There is nothing worse in this world than aqcuiring a family just to lose it again.”
Erica looked at him in surprise and asked, “What is that supposed to mean?” Alex just gave her a faint smile and answered her, “I have no idea, Remy told me that when I asked him why he never trusted anyone.” After that silence started reigning there. After a few minutes they headed back in and continued their work.
Remy and Sandra arrived at the apartment complex, it was a quite new building with balconies for every apartment. The house was white in color and had 5 stories. Since the house looked like it cost a lot to even rent an apartment, she was wondering how Alex had managed to buy the apartment.
When Alex had parked his bike in a garage box that came with the apartment, he lead Sandra to the corridor. He gave her a magnetic key that was used to open the corridor door and went inside. Remy's apartment was on the 5 floor and Sandra was quiet all the way from the garage box to the apartment door.

When they got inside, Sandra was baffled. The walls of the apartment were white with black stripes running along the walls. At first glance they were random but if you looked closer you could understand that they drew a picture after a picture on the wall. At times it was a flower, at times a bird and so on.
The floor was wooden parquet floor and the entire apartment had floor heating. Remy showed Sandra where the bathroom and kitchen were, also where Remy's “off-limits” room was. After that he went over to Sandra's room and said, “This is your room and here is the key for it. If you want you can lock it, I honestly don't care as I have no business there. However, what I do want is that you keep the room clean, so no clothes all over the place or half eaten food rotting somewhere.”
Hearing that Sandra nodded. Remy wasn't a neat freak but he couldn't stand living like a pig. “Okey, settle yourself in and take a shower as well. In about an hour and half, we will go shopping.” Sandra looked at him in puzzlement as he asked, “Shopping for what? I do not have any money.” Remy felt irritation well up inside him as he said, “Erica looked through your stuff and made a list of “essential everyday items for women”. So we are going to go shopping for them and through a twist of fate, this is on me.”
Sandra looked at the list that Remy was given by Erica and her face turned slightly red as she asked in a quiet voice, “Did you read the items on it?” Remy just said in an uninterested face, “Yea, I did. We will go out at 4 PM, so make sure you are ready by then and also, if you want to grab something to eat just fix something up for yourself in the kitchen.”
With that Remy started walking towards the kitchen to make some more coffee. If you needed to describe Remy in a few words, the most accurate would be “Coffee Addict”. When the coffee was done, he headed to his room and went on his laptop. The room was different from the rest of the apartment. The walls were black with red lines running alongside them. The room had a bed, closet, desk and a chair. He also had a carpet on the floor so he wouldn't ruin the parquet under the chair.
As he logged into his online bank, he saw that the fee for his latest delivery had been wired over. Now his grand total was 600 thousand Krones. He was quite rich for someone who was only 15 but his job as a courier was a bit more dangerous than normal jobs as well so it was understandable. He glanced at the clock and saw that it was only 3.13PM. As he was feeling a bit hungry he decided to fix up a small snack before heading out.
When they would go shopping, the bike would be impractical judging by the list so he decided to take the bus instead. The commute would only take 10 minutes longer than with his bike so it wasn't that bad. Time slowly ticked by and it was 5 minutes until 4PM so he started changing clothes to go out. When he reached the front door, he was slightly surprised when Sandra was all dressed up and ready to go already. She was now wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie that was a few sizes too big for her.
Remy smiled and was happy as he thought to himself, “At least when you say we are leaving at 4 PM, she is ready to go by 4 PM, not that she starts getting ready to go at 4PM.”
After checking the fridge for what he needed from the food department he put his shoes on and they walked out of the door.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)
